I have been designing a canopy the last few years, and finally, on 4wd number 7, am about to get started building. Surprisingly similar to yours, but somewhat more 'complicated'. I just started welding and came across your site just yesterday. Interestingly, your site has been great, actually showing I managed to foresee most of the issues that you have shown, which gives me some confidence I am on the right lines. My design also has a vertical lift, and to control the alignment of the roof as it lifts, it is easiest to use some 'scissor-lift' mechanism, with two fixed points, two dynamic on rollers. These can be acquired from caravan outlets (with springs to provide lifting force), although I will make my own, just from two joined bits of aluminium, with the gas-struts doing the lifting rather than the springs, which means they can be lighter weight aluminium. Thanks for your site. Great job... Cass.
Thanks for watching. I hope you have learnt a thing or two. If you have any thoughts or opinion about the gas struts and the canopy, feel free to comment down below. If you enjoy this video, subscribe, press like and notification.
I am not aware of your plans to enclose the top, But, if you use a sturdy fabric, you may only need 4 gas struts of appropriate strength in the corners to raise the top. As long as you are able to find sufficient length, the canvas which will be taut when the roof is up, should provide some stability. The front struts should point opposite to the rear ones as you mentioned , what are your thoughts on this?....Gerry
I think there is a potential to put four struts as you mentioned but the tricky part is the fitting process. To fit it safely, you need something to lift the roof to the desired height before you fit the struts.

Your workshop is noice. Do you run your own business there?
Thx. Currently I do not own a business but looking at having one in the future.
