DIY Swing Tyre Carrier - Overland Tyre Carrier
Переглядів 1,3 тис.2 роки тому
Building a swing tyre carrier, a heavy duty hinge is needed. The carrier needs to be strong enough to hold the spare tyre. This build involves an aluminium tyre carrier arm to keep the weight. However, the major challenge is being a weaker metal, aluminium is more prone to flex by the tyre. The carrier arm will need to be engineered to minimise flex and metal fatigue. Great video thanks. Any idea if these can be bolted on to any cross bar or are they only compatible with Rola cross bars? I was looking for something to attach to my HSP Rolla cover cross bars but they don't make a platform yet.

    • @customcraftnadventure
      @customcraftnadventure Рік тому

      I'd say the platform can be bolted onto any surface (the bracket is just a hole really). That will also depend on your fabrication skills. Tho I'd much prefer mounting it on something like a unistrut or anything with a channel that holds a t bolt or channel nut. You can get them from rhino rack as roof rack accessories.

    Hi mate, that's a nice tray build and cool channel. Can you tell me did you do much sanding / degreasing on the duragal steel frame before using the adhesion primer? And how the raptor coating is holding up ?

    • @customcraftnadventure
      @customcraftnadventure Рік тому

      I did light sanding and wipe the surface. Tho I do recommend (by experience) sanding the surface using a coarser sanding disc/paper. This gives better grip to raptor products. Glad you enjoyed the contents.

    Very good video mate, but I am not sure why you would want a swing are on that back panel. Swing arms are used to swing the tyre away from tailgates/doors or things that open. It looks like this tyre is just against a flat side or you canopy. Am i missing something?

    Hi there again, congratulations on finishing the build. You should both be proud of the result. Yes, there are some issues that you have openly identified, and some areas that you could refine, but that is life, right. Those that never start a project for fear of failing, lose out on the benefits of what can be learned. I am sure your next version will be even better. I'm on my 7th 4wd build, but this is my first canopy build (just started last week), same as you, new to welding, always having fabricated using wood, carpet and aluminium, so this will be a challenge, as was yours. I thank you for the insight that has helped me know I am on the right track. Looking forward to more of your content... Go well, Cass.

  • @Easycass
    @Easycass Рік тому

    I have been designing a canopy the last few years, and finally, on 4wd number 7, am about to get started building. Surprisingly similar to yours, but somewhat more 'complicated'. I just started welding and came across your site just yesterday. Interestingly, your site has been great, actually showing I managed to foresee most of the issues that you have shown, which gives me some confidence I am on the right lines. My design also has a vertical lift, and to control the alignment of the roof as it lifts, it is easiest to use some 'scissor-lift' mechanism, with two fixed points, two dynamic on rollers. These can be acquired from caravan outlets (with springs to provide lifting force), although I will make my own, just from two joined bits of aluminium, with the gas-struts doing the lifting rather than the springs, which means they can be lighter weight aluminium. Thanks for your site. Great job... Cass.

  • @geryquinn8005
    @geryquinn8005 Рік тому

    I am not aware of your plans to enclose the top, But, if you use a sturdy fabric, you may only need 4 gas struts of appropriate strength in the corners to raise the top. As long as you are able to find sufficient length, the canvas which will be taut when the roof is up, should provide some stability. The front struts should point opposite to the rear ones as you mentioned , what are your thoughts on this?....Gerry

    • @customcraftnadventure
      @customcraftnadventure Рік тому

      I think there is a potential to put four struts as you mentioned but the tricky part is the fitting process. To fit it safely, you need something to lift the roof to the desired height before you fit the struts.

  • @jonathanneethling
    @jonathanneethling Рік тому

    This is very clever. Great idea. If I may add my 10c…. My concern would be the metal on rubber wear. Maybe glue a plastic cap cover on top of the bolt and thread. As I say, very clever. I was actually UA-caming ideas when I saw your blog. I was thinking about using epoxy and football boot studs on a cheap set of tracks. I just can’t justify the cost of Maxtrax.

    This is the first video I have seen that shows the channel on the ostrich wing 270 degree awning. And what you found with the bolts eating out the channel is my major concern as I have been looking at buying this awning. Second of all the aluminium spacers that comes with the awning are they also mounted to the channel at the hinge end with what size screw bolts I can't find anything about the size. To me this bears the most load and it seems to have to small the hardware for this point. Does these screw bolts bolt into the channel or the handle bracket ?

    • @customcraftnadventure
      @customcraftnadventure Рік тому

      Yeh I'm not too sure what size bolt it actually came in because from the start I did not fit it myself. But after I took it off and see how it was fitted, I decided to modify it with the bolt size i think suitable. Overall the channel is really quite too weak for m6 bolts, therefore I changed them to m13. The hinge end does not seem to be the problem as I remember. I think the ppl who fit it used either m8 or m10. The black bracket there I used m13 as well. Overall good awning but I needs to fit properly👍

    • @regkershaw
      @regkershaw Рік тому

      @Custom Craft & Adventure thxs for your reply. That channel is the only thing I'm worried about. They say the brackets are important to carry the weight but that channel to me is the problem. That will go before a bracket

Obviously under-engineered. The bolt wings actually bent for my application (in any case they do not hold much weight). Also you can only use their channel nut for the platform. The nuts clearly says M8 but it seems only certain M8 bolt fit in OK... I'll make a review with this tray. Stay tuned.
