    Just the fact that you knew Carol King (and knew she wrote it) gives me a lot of respect for you guys. 👍
    This brought tears to my eyes, man. She’s one of the few that can do it consistently.
    Aretha is the truth.

    This performance was beautiful and Queen Franklin killed it. If I recall Carol was shock to see her because Aretha was sick for a few weeks and almost didn’t make the performance. But I love this type of music that I grew up on.

      That was what struck me when I first saw this and when I watched it again today, this is a black singer singing in front of a black President at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts. This country has never not been a work in progress, but you can never say progress isn't made. How far we've come, and how far we have to go.

    Very necessary. Had to be done. Beyond iconic. I am a middle-aged white guy that grew up in the deep South, and Aretha was just as big a part of my childhood as country and rock. She crossed all barriers and transcended genres. I am convinced that Aretha, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder paved the way for me to eventually love the music of Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Michael Jackson, Prince, etc. I like your plan to share your personal passion and use it to educate. I will be along for the ride.

    Aretha Franklin was a diva in the best, most glorious and powerful sense of the word. She never lost it. She could do it on a dime if she was called at the last moment. Yes, I'm thinking of the time she filled in for an opera great and just KILLED it. A performer, a diva, a goddess of song. There will never be another like her. I saw the Kennedy Center Honors online that night and cried from how amazing she was.

    This was a tribute concert for Carole King and she was so touched by Aretha playing the piano, not many know that she was an excellent piano player going back to when she was 15. Aretha and Carole were close from the old days of Motown and it really showed in this performance.
    I'll take the performance at the Kennedy Center and the difference is the love that was pouring out of her soul for Carole King, it brings tears to me eyes every time I watch it

    I just wanted to make sure people know that Carol King wrote the music. Words written by Gerry Goffin. And it was never theirs again after Miss Aretha. Ms King was astounded by the fact she was performing at all. Miss Aretha had been ill by then and not performing much. She was excited and amazed. Love her reaction. And Miss Aretha showed the world her immense and powerful talent. A stunning performance.

      Pandora Fox Carol is excellent, but Aretha was a prolific songwriter and pianist in addition to her singing. Yes, Carol and Gerry wrote a beautiful song, but like you said it was never truly theirs after Aretha sang it.

      Kind of you to say :) I wish we put more effort into acknowledging and honoring the pioneers. Blind Willie Johnson brought us the growl. Sister Rosetta Tharpe was The Original Guitar Hero. There would be no metal without these legends.

    • @saschaschneider6355
      @saschaschneider6355 5 років тому

      +lamech006 +Ramon I've found that most metal heads are like that. We recognise and appreciate good music and it doesn't matter which genre it is. What matters is quality. Good song writing, great instrumentalists and especially vocalists. It's just that metal has it plenty, which is why we gravitate towards that, but give us great music of any kind and we're happy. Scott Bradlee of Postmodern Jukebox was wondering about why so many metal heads like PMJ. The responses he got were basically "We love good music and you give us that".

    I love me some Motown!!!! Marvin Gaye, Al Green, the Temptations. Ain’t nothing like a good old fashioned soul.
    I think the biggest difference is the amount of blues in their voice. It seems pretty rare that we get a good bluesy soul artist nowadays. The young guys all got the range of the older guys, but they don’t have the same soul.
    I would love to see you guys react to some newer soul music like Miguel, SIR and Frank Ocean.

    @stevemartin7013 5 років тому +22

    Oh, man. I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for you guys to start doing some reviews on songs and artists that have played a role in your lives. With such a large portion of your audience being primarily metal and country fans who have been helping you explore some of the history and influences in those genres, I assumed that at some point you guys would return the favor and try to spread some awareness of and appreciation for some of the pioneers and greats in R&B, soul, and hip hop. And Aretha is a great place to start doing that.
    I hope y'all get the chance to touch on some of my personal favorites like Sly and the Family Stone ("If You Want Me To Stay"), Curtis Mayfield ("Right On For The Darkness"), Bill Withers ("Ain't No Sunshine"), Marvin Gaye ("What's Going On"), etc, etc, etc. But even if they don't make the cut, I'm looking forward to more of these old-school videos. Thanks for doing them, guys! :)

The disconnect between the generations when it comes to R&B because of the way we listen to music. there are multiple generations that don't share music with there kids, they put on their head phone and keep it to themselves. Ipod, mp3's beats headphones bumping, keeping all the emotions and reactions to themselves. Not like our parents or myself, couldnt wait to do my house cleaning with the speaker in the window, #freddiejackson, #anitabaker,#melissamorgan, I'm a new sub, and i enjoy what you Brothers do, but I am here for the R&B ALL DAY!!! When I met the man who was to become my husband, I introduced him to Luther Vandross, Teena Marie, Sade, Alexander O’Neal, Phyllis Hyman, etc. He grew up knowing & loving Aretha, Ray Charles, The Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Earth Wind & Fire, etc., but didn’t know any of the following generations of R&B.
      I could be totally off the mark, but I think the disconnect started in the 80’s, and has only become greater over the decades.

    R&B is one of the best genres and Franklin was an unbelievable artist. You guys should do a video about bittersweet symphony by the Verve , one of the most defining British songs of the 90s

    Y’all need to look at the video for when Aretha pinch hit for the opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti last minute . Arguably one of the most famous, beautiful laments in opera Nessun Dorma from Turandot.
    I had the pleasure of seeing her multiple times. A true diva-never sang something the same way twice-always interpreting.
    Vocally incredible. A fine musician-her work, impact and influence in civil rights in America she shone even brighter.
    All hail the Queen

    Yes! She's a legend, and I get emotional every time I watch this. When she loses her coat, there go the tears. Standing ovation to Aretha, a true queen, giving tribute to another queen, but Aretha's performance here is still more moving than Carole King in her prime.... the feeling she puts into this, even if it's not 'textbook'..that delivery at her age was astonishing and she's a true gift to music. her talent will never be forgotten

    This brought tears thinking about such a huge loss to music when we lost Aretha. What an overwhelming performance! Thanks for doing this and it is awesome that you're revisiting R&B and the Gospel that will naturally be included. I hope you'll put Mahalia on here💕

    One of the many things I loved about The Queen of Soul's music is how it reached so many people from all walks of life. No matter what race you were born into,when you heard Aretha sing "I never loved a Man" you wanted a gal to love you the way Aretha loved whoever she was singing about. Her music truly brought people people together.

    Amazing performance. I know I say this every time but you guys should really use your position to shine some light on the diamonds in the rough. A band that I fell in love with that really needs some more attention is Toehider and a great intro song to them would be Whatever Makes You Feel Superior. Seriously GOOD, Seriously UNDER-RATED.
    It's proggy, poppy, emotional, impactful, unique, impressive and quite tongue-in-cheek. I think you guys would really love it.

    Should be required viewing for all music lovers. She transcends genres, space, time and defies age. Very few people know she sang opera as well but should because listening to her is a gift. Aretha not only caresses notes - she creates space where the notes marinate in your ears as she hangs on to one then jumps to another. Think tarzan swinging on vines at different heights defying gravity - that’s what I hear when I listen to the Queen! Beautiful.
