Why did no other ancient society produce something like the Bible? That a tiny, out of the way community could have created a literary corpus so determinative for peoples across the globe seems improbable.
For Jacob Wright, the Bible is not only a testimony of survival, but also an unparalleled achievement in human history. Forged after Babylon's devastation of Jerusalem, it makes not victory but total humiliation the foundation of a new idea of belonging. Lamenting the destruction of their homeland, scribes who composed the Bible imagined a promise-filled past while reflecting deeply on abject failure. More than just religious scripture, the Bible began as a trailblazing blueprint for a new form of political community. Its response to catastrophe offers a powerful message of hope and restoration that is unique in the Ancient Near Eastern and Greco-Roman worlds.
Wright's Bible is thus a social, political, and even economic roadmap - one that enabled a small and obscure community located on the periphery of leading civilizations and empires not just to come back from the brink, but ultimately to shape the world's destiny. The Bible speaks ultimately of being a united yet diverse people, and its pages present a manual of pragmatic survival strategies for communities confronting societal collapse.

Not much has changed. The amount of times I have heard jews and non Jewish supporters of Israel's human rights violations complaining that those who oppose them are disregarding the bible is astonishing. I was particularly astonished to hear Ross K Nichols doing this in his video about who owns Israel.

It is difficult to determine when a story began, because humans have been sharing stories around a campfire as long as there have been humans and campfires, and the stories keep being elaborated and changed over the generations.

Some Australian Aboriginal oral traditions can be clearly traced back to events many thousands of years before. In Victoria there is a story of warring mountains throwing rocks at each other, these mountains were last active as volcanoes over 10,000 years previously. The inundation of the Victorian coastline about 5,000 years ago was described to early settlers to the colony, and they were told that Port Phillip Bay (Melbourne) was once dry ground; both facts were later confirmed by geological studies.
So yes the spoken word can carry essential facts and truth for many, many generations. Many details will be lost, extra elements may emerge and there might be all sorts of overlay, but the most essential and important parts can be preserved like a time capsule. Indeed it may be the extra elements are necessary to keep the story meaningful and thus keep being told.

What if we are actually living in the mind/brain of the one we all call God, and this is why the neurons in the human brain resemble the Milky Way and outer space. And that rather than humanity evolving, we have been led into devolving by religion. And that man’s religion is nothing more than calcified spirituality. And that the worship of Yahweh and his wife is actually the honoring of both the masculine and feminine brain hemispheres - leading to the activation of the pineal, and Christ consciousness. And yet most humans fear the 3rd eye awakening, as if it is “of evil” (d’evil). And that the Third Temple lies within the separated brain hemispheres. And the Sun/Son is a vital part of the awakening process: God’s Son/Sun. And that all of this might be a part of the biblical “Honor thy mother - and thy father.”

The truth is that the Bible is the only real evidence-supported explanation of our origin, science hasn't and will never shed any light on that. One thing I will admit is that there are many Christian denominations that don't follow Bible teachings, so if you left one of those that's for the best. The Ancient Israelites wrote the Tanak in order to give themselves a Cultural identity, just as all the other Nations around them had a Historical narrative from which they formed their Cultural identity. Egypt for example, had a very rich Cultural identity and had texts such as "The Pyramid Texts", "The Egyptian Book of the Dead", the "42 Laws of Maat Under Kemet Law", "The Book of the Opening of the Mouth" (a liturgy of Funerary Offerings), "The Burden of Isis" (Love Hymns to Isis), "The Story of the Book of Thoth", "The Wisdom of Hermes Trismegistus", just to name a few. So Israel needed something like this as well.

My copy is arriving in Scotland tomorrow! Between this and books like “God: An Anatomy”, my deconversion from evangelicalism must really be messing with online algorithms 😂.
I still have these moments of wanting to both laugh and cry at the same time, when my brain sees the reality behind what I’d followed for decades as mystical truth that others couldn’t see. These texts as a way of dealing with economic/ military/ political defeat actually become more beautiful to me: I can put myself in that position. And it seriously helps me to hand them back to these contexts, thank the writers for the good stuff - we got great paintings & music from Bach, Handel, Palestrina etc and cool buildings that I love. They were gifted writers of poetry & story, and did the best they could in times of catastrophe: which Professor Wright helpfully points that we are in today on a cliff edge. With all the benefits we have, let’s together do better than this. I think this book will help me to do better in this world, and inwardly let some things go

      Revelation 15:3
Using the prophetic year of the Bible. Adam was created 4026 bce. 4026 bce + 6000 is 1974. But to enter into Jehovah's rest. Is 60 years. Jehovah said they would die in the wilderness from age 20 and up. So 40 years plus 20 is 60 years. 1974 plus 60 years is 2034 also. Jehovah then said to Moses and Aaron: 27 “How much longer will this evil assembly keep up this murmuring against me? I have heard what the Israelites are murmuring against me. 28 Say to them, ‘“As surely as I live,” declares Jehovah, “I will do to you just what I have heard you speak! 29 In this wilderness your corpses will fall, yes, the whole number of you from 20 years old and up who were registered, all of you who have murmured against me.
Hebrews 3:9 where your forefathers put me to the test and tried me, despite seeing my works for 40 years. 10 This is why I became disgusted with this generation and said: ‘They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not come to know my ways.’ 11 So I swore in my anger: ‘They will not enter into my rest.’”
Hebrews 4:2 For we who have exercised faith do enter into the rest, just as he has said: “So I swore in my anger, ‘They will not enter into my rest,’” although his works were finished from the founding of the world. 4 For in one place he has said of the seventh day as follows: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works,” 5 and here again he says: “They will not enter into my rest.” 6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter into it, and those to whom the good news was first declared did not enter in because of disobedience, 7 he again marks off a certain day by saying long afterward in David’s psalm, “Today”; just as it has been said above, “Today if you listen to his voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8 For if Joshua had led them into a place of rest, God would not afterward have spoken of another day. 9 So there remains a sabbath-rest for the people of God. 10 For the man who has entered into God’s rest has also rested from his own works, just as God did from his own. 11 Let us therefore do our utmost to enter into that rest, so that no one may fall into the same pattern of disobedience.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold on to our public declaration of him.

Then they were specifically interwoven into their final storyline forms. By incorporating other emotionally manipulative myths, legends, beliefs. By the higher educated religious, and political leaderships for the purpose of engineering their societies. By using peoples emotions against them.

I’m at 19’50”, and the point about the Hebrew Bible being “a survival manual for a community that no longer has a kingdom” reminds me of how the trauma of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE led to both the development both of rabbinic tradition (including the Mishnah and ultimately the Talmud), and the development of the New Testament texts (esp the gospels) among proto-Christian groups. The same pattern of creating texts to survive after traumatic disruption to your community

@@louhortonsculpture The US south was an interesting business. I've always been kind of the opinion that the South was probably right "legally" - I can't see anything in the Constitution that said a state couldn't opt out of the country. States rights, etc. - I think they had a point. But practically speaking I suspect that if the North had "let them go" the further unfolding of history wouldn't have gone nearly as well, and on top of that the South was entirely in the wrong morally on the core causal issue. Ultimately the North didn't need to approach it something they were legally entitled to do - the war could be regarded as one nation invading another to put a stop to institutionalized human rights violations.
Anyway, I'm certainly no lawyer, so... probably just shouldn't open my mouth. That's the way it's always seemed to me, though. Practically speaking, I think we needed to remain one nation in order to meet the coming future as successfully as we managed. And slavery needed to be brought to an end.

I feel like people NOT understanding how a body of media/texts about characters can grow in this snowball way haven't interacted heavily with franchises, fandom and fan fiction. Like Star Wars is not quite 50 years old. It draws on ancient themes but those characters have already changes to 'canon' and various arguable retcons in the time of a generation or two of real life time.but the creators do try to unify and develop a unified version where they can. Transformers is about 40 years old now and has many separate continuities featuring the same characters. Some creators do try to create a unified canon but in the same time many others are not. And that's just official licensed works! That's before all the fan-created works. And this happens with many characters and stories.

The true God made the heavens and the earth and revealed himself in a special way to the Jews, a nation that he created for himself to be a blessing to all the families of the earth (see Isaiah 45:18, Genesis 12:1-3). To the Jews he gave the scriptures which instructs mankind to find salvation through faith in Jesus Christ (see Romans 3:2, 2 Timothy 3:15). Of the Jews, the Savior of men Jesus Christ was born of a virgin (see Galatians 4:4, Isaiah 7:14). Through the shedding of his blood, Jesus atoned for the sins of all mankind (see Colossians 1:14). He died, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the scriptures (see 1 Corinthians15:3-4). All people are called to repent and believe on Christ for the forgiveness of their sins or they will perish (see Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16). Through the Jews, the land of Israel, God's promises and dealings with them, the holy scriptures, and the coming of Christ the Messiah as promised by God, God has made himself known to us. It is not his will that any perish, but that all come to repentance (see 2 Peter 3:9).

Till our ship crossed the Suez Canal in June 1956 luckily I had not once heard any mythology regarding the so-called bible. Unfortunately, my cousins who had arrived before us went to Catholic schools and I was brought up a so-called Catholic. I rejected it when I turned 14 and have spent my last 59 years comfortable with my rational objection. I do, however, correspond with one of my teachers, an eighty year old priest who is a biblical scholar and has had 50 or so books published. He is a wonderful human being and I totally respect him. However, I cannot come to terms with his acceptance of the validity, even the existence, of a man some beings called Christ, and I sometimes forward programs like this to him. He knows Bart Ehrman, and, of course disagrees with him. All I can say for sure is that I love this program, and this program with Herr Wright has been one of the best episodes of my life as a human being attempting to come to terms with why the Western world is so fucked and focused on nothing but war.

Last night (in Europe), as I watched the video, I had a weird feeling; that I have heard a story - a mythology based on a defeat induced trauma, very, very similar to this - before. When I woke up, I knew exactly what story it was, and the irony is as sinister as it is black:
Without futher deliberation, I can come up with five clear similarities (I have to dig into the subject again, as I think there are many more):
Heinrich Himmlers "Ahnenerbe" (ancestral heritage) project, which was a core part of the thought-dna behind the pretext for "die Endlösung", was:
    1) Spawned by the trauma of Germany loosing WW I.
    2) Himmlers mythology had the ancient King Heinrich I in the role of King David.
    3) The goal was not to restore the lost Kingdom itself, but to use the myth surrounding it as a rally point, from which a new (political/religious: same, same, when it gets fanatical) common identity could be forged.
    4) It was centered around a figure of absolute, distant (Hitler´s private life was kept a secret exactly to create that effect) authority - Führer as a substitute to a classic deity.
    5) Those who opposed (in reality or were claimed to do so) were regarded as subhumans ("enemies of God" is the term in Iran presently) to be delt with accordingly.

I think it is universally human wanting to find some kind of explaination to one´s defeat, regardless if as a group or as an individual. The parallel is so effective in that respect, because it goes to show that the Nazis did exactly what they themselves blaimed the Jews for; assuming to be so special, that everybody else would deliberately conspire against them (the Nazis viewed themselves as the true Germans, who´s "place in the sun" ("Platz an der Sonne" - Kaiser Wilhelm II) was "robbed" during WWI). Therefore their hate for the Jews was in ways based on seing the Jews as usurpers to the throne of exceptionality, they (the Nazis) wanted to reserve for themselves - a zero-sum game.
The claim to being exceptional is normally either connected to a narrative of victimhood or one of grandeur (in the sense of being chosen - Hitler viewed himself as just that, and as his surroundings confirmed that notion on a daily basis, he became more and more convinced), and not so rarely of being both simultaneously, which is a major driving mechanism behind conspiracy theories (hence why the Nazis in many ways regarded the Jews as sub- and superhuman at the same time).
Conspiracy theories serve two main purposes - probably both in the nature of reassurance to comfort a battered self-image:
1)To reassure the believers that they are indeed special ("At the core of every sect one will find the wish for belonging to an elite!", Max Weber - translation and phrasing is according to my recollection, so it might be unorthodox, but the essense is acurate).
      2) To reassure the believers that there is an absolute purpose in life, and hence "things happen for a reason", instead of the chilling notion, that bad luck is probably more down to a combination of sheer, bloody chance and one´s own ineptness.
So no, I am not out to get Judaism anymore than any other -ism. I don´t care much for any of them, as they all tend to freeze into dogmatism as soon as they are born. That due to the fact, that they are depending on the relative level of knowledge in the era in which they, respectively, were spawned, why their followers will always incline towards levels of obscurantism in order to maintain the philosophy upon which their self-image rests.

Totally. Jesus was abducted by Saul/Paul a Roman Citizen and Herodian Temple Priest. He twisted the teachings of Jesus and James into a Greek mishmash with authoritarian structure to nullify the original Jewish Messiah beliefs. Then realizing that it could be used as major population control adapted it for the Roman Empire. And so called Jews who were Roman Citizens were actually members of Herod’s Arabic Idumaean Tribe who all were granted Roman Citizenship and spoke and wrote Greek and Latin. Josephus and Saul/Paul along with the High Priests of the Temple were not actually Jewish.

I wonder who benefit from religion ? Does it help with a religion and a book with to eatch religion with laws nobody even follow? No I would think. Those in power is the only one who benefit religion. Why? Becorse religion is control. And people are i a timetrap. To be controled by a 2000 year ols book is clealy sign that naivitet. Move on, its 2024 now and what is best do you think. To belive a thing is ther. Or know that ther is a thing.

Years and years ago, I read or heard from someone that for many years, the ancient Israelites had only stories told over campfires of past events, that lasted maybe over ages. And the original stories started with Abraham. Anything before that was irrelevant to a people on the move and trying to keep some semblance of order. The stories were passed down verbally (or probably in some type of song, etc) from generation to generation. Finally when the two kingdoms were conquered and subjugated by ‘whoever’ and many sent into exile in Babylon (or wherever), the children being born into these different cultures began asking questions about what happened before Abraham. And they started adapting Babylonian (or whatever) culture.
So, those in charge decided it was time to write down the stories that had been told by centuries over campfires (and changed slightly in each retelling), AND!!! Add in stories from the other cultures but reordered and/or rewritten (or retold) from a Israelite/Jewish religious perspective. The hope was to keep a separate culture and history so that future generations had something to counter what they were hearing from other cultures.
So, the ‘Bible’ started to be written down during the Babylonian captivities and the world origin stories were added at this time but changed from the Babylonian, Sumarian, Assyrian, whatever myths to match what happens later.
I heard this possibility maybe 40-50 years ago.

I'm a mere 57 years old and have witnessed, in my time, human beings turning other human beings into Gods, or demi Gods, many times. None of which seem to pan out or end well. The number of times this has happened throughout history, prehistoric included, must be enormous. I've even heard of several returned Jesus's living right now. There's one not too far from from my home town. He has longish hair, a beard, biblical robes, and he's white. Logic says it must be him. 🙄🙄
I'm so disenchanted with organised religion. All of them. Not ancient sacred and helpful knowledge of self, and how to be a good person and more content and whatnot, but the BS associated with them, especially the geopolitical nonsense it's still going on with. Even atheism is not immune to this sort of controlling behaviour. Just let people find a way to be better, do as little harm as possible to others and our universal environment, and and let's focus on that. Honestly, I'm more interested in Bigfoot these days.

John 20:31, NASB …these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name. Some Jewish leaders (vs. 16) were opposing Jesus. He replied to them that they were indeed studying the Scriptures seeking the key(s) to eternal life. That is certainly a good thing to do. However, they entirely missed the whole point of seeking the Scriptures’ truths about eternal life. The Jewish leaders failed to grasp the central point, and Jesus made it very clear to them: “These [Jesus said] are the very Scriptures that testify about me.”

We don't really know much of what was in the original Torah, since that was stolen by Josephus when Titus Flavius raided the temple of Jerusalem in 70ad. Josephus sent the temple book to Alexandria to have it re-written so as to paint the jews as having largely always been a diaspora and not really having a homeland to speak of in the same way other Roman provinces did. That when they did have a homeland, they themselves screwed it up and almost forced outsiders to conquer them as part of "God's will". This was all to contain the very large jewish population in Rome itself as well as across the empire. Many of these jews were also prominent persons, whether free-men or not, so the Flavians couldn't just sweep the jewish revolt under the rug. It is from this re-telling of the Old testament that you begin to see other Alexandrian scribes, who many happened to be extended family to the Flavians, pen the New Testament. It was all to tell a narrative and weaken the only people that could conceivably topple Rome at the time, if they chose to. Jesus (as we know him now) himself was written as an allegory to Titus.

Jacob Wright's most important book is his first book: “Rebuilding Identity: The Nehemiah-Memoir and its Earliest Readers.” His theory of what portions of the book of Nehemiah constitute the first compositional layer of the book helped me to reconstruct the Memoirs of Nehemiah.
He is correct that the Maccabees are the ones who brought the Torah to the centre of the community, but I believe it was also the Maccabees and their supporters who created the Mosaic religion and wrote the original version of the Torah. The Torah continued to be redacted even into the late first century CE. It is paradigms surrounding the palaeographic and contextual dating of certain texts that prevent most critical scholars from recognizing this.

As I've said for decades, the Old Testament is a collection of stories from all over the Middle East Levant gathered from the Babylonian libraries. It was written to establish a history and identity for a people who have been in exile generations and on returning to the region needed a way to establish a Religious community and a reason to re-establish the Jerusalem temple, the priesthood, the community et al.
It was the discovery of the historic origins of the beliefs and traditions, along with the dating of those written works that began my de-conversion. Biblical studies are what undid my false belief through educating myself on the way to becoming a teacher.

"Egypt will become lower than the other kingdoms and will no longer dominate the other nations, and I will make them so small that they will not be able to subdue other nations" (Ezekiel 29:15). Which man (without the help of a higher Being) after knowing Egypt to be a great and mighty nation could have boldly prophesied that Egypt would become this way and would remain so forever? We are now 2,500+ years after that prophecy and Egypt is still a lowly kingdom.

@@thelyrebird1310 Actually, the countries that most ancient civilizations resided in did rise at different times. Take for example Babylon the great resided where Iraq is today... Egypt on the other hand just plain and simply could never rise again.
How do you explain the prophecy that Nebuchadnezzar would destroy Tyre?
A 19th-century traveler commented on what was left of ancient Tyre in his day, saying: “Of the original Tyre known to Solomon and the prophets of Israel, not a vestige remains except in its rock-cut sepulchres on the mountain sides, and in foundation walls . . . Even the island, which Alexander the Great, in his siege of the city, converted into a cape by filling up the water between it and the mainland, contains no distinguishable relics of an earlier period than that of the Crusades. The modern town, all of which is comparatively new, occupies the northern half of what was once the island, while nearly all the remainder of the surface is covered with undistinguishable ruins.” So basically a new town was rebuilt some time later called Tyre, but not in the same location and it is no where near as prosperous as the original Tyre... that great city can never be rebuilt.

When the Jewish elite returned to Israel they found that the "peasantry" who had been left behind had a variety of different texts, beliefs, and practices. It was decided that an "official" Holy Book, etc. was needed. So a scheme was concocted to convince the people that Moses had written it 500 years earlier and buried it in the Temple.
