How to remove a headlight in a 2015 Ford Cmax Hybrid

  • A semi detailed semi professional video on how I removed the headlight from my 2015 Ford Cmax Hybrid. Please don't smash it with a hammer. Just follow these handy instructions and you'll be golden. Can be used to assist with LED upgrade as well. The other tool I forgot to mention is a standard large blade straight slot (flat blade) screwdriver. I believe a T-25 or 30 will also fit but I don't have one.

Glad to be of service to another Cmax owner. I can't even change a bulb without removing the housing unless you use stock bulbs. But if you want LEDs just can't get a good angle to get them in.

Thanks for the tips on the headlight assembly removal. I came from a 2010 Prius to my 2014 C-Max Energi here, great car, lot of things I like about it but there is some maintenance that is so time-consuming that I will be going back to another Prius for my next trade. Just this headlight bulb replacement is so complicated compared to the Prius, reach behind the light and quarter turn and the bulb is out, no removing the whole light assembly. Oil changes, open the access door and change the oil and filter as opposed to removing the whole undercover on the C-Max. Engine air filter replacement on the Prius is two clips and hinged lid, C-Max requires a lot of disassembly. Cabin air filter is almost impossible to change on the C-Max. Still like my C-Max though, just hate the difficult maintenance.

They used a design that originated from Europe. They tend to make them more complicated than needed. I still love my Cmax. Just had to change my first set of brake pads after 105k miles.

    *Thankyou, thankyou Mr. McDill!*
That was a really sweet and simple guide and you saved me hours of cussing. Its all about that tiny little black plastic square peg that slots into the square hole. I couldn't see it, but once I lifted it free the headlight came out with no trouble. Why in the World is it that a guy on UA-cam can explain how to do it and the Ford Motor Company can't?
To anyone else reading this, I'd recommend using a plastic spudger to free the peg loose.

Man, thnx for the video ! I have Forc C-MAX 2015 SEL. Today I had to replace a low light bulbs. I have read a manual and tried to do it as it was written in the manual. And it was impossible. I spent 3 hours on the cold street trying to do it. The issue was this little "piggy that makes it moves together". And of course it is not mentioned in the manual ("pull the headlamp toward fron as much as you can"). I have replaced right ward bulb without removing the whole headlight, but it was impossible for the left side. So I pulled as hard as I could and looks like I have broke this piggy (cause manual said: "pull !"). The I could easily remove the headlight and change the bulb. Fortunately, the headlight without the piggy fits its place good with only screws, so I hope this won't cause any troubles in the future.

This was so helpful. That peg drove me crazy. I used a one inch chisel end to pry it out. And those t10 screws holding bulb in are a pain. I had the same civic for 12 years. I don’t remember bulbs being this hard to change. But it seems like under the hoods keep getting tighter. This was a big pain but doable. I would recommend taking it to the dealer to be done unless you have a good set of tools, time to kill, and tight budget.
And can someone reply to the message about how to disconnect the main electrical connector to the headlight housing. I got it but not even sure how and might have broken it.😏

It is. But the stock bulbs don't care how hot they get. The leds live MUCH longer when they can shed their heat quickly. If you leave them on the heat builds up really bad. I tried it. Also have had mine this way since I had the car. Zero issues. I deliver pizza in this car at night so I use my headlights a lot. I would rather clean them out then fry bulbs.
