I was also at the barrier for Father John Misty's set and it was fucking brilliant - probably my favourite performance I've seen to date ! The guy is a genius

    Im so confused, is the album they are talking about Pure Comedy? Was this interview from 2016? Or does Father John Misty have plans for a new album coming out already?

    • @jaydestone54
      @jaydestone54 6 років тому +5

      Hillsdale That's what I was wondering. But he said the new album has 10 tracks; 'Pure Comedy' has 13. Also he said he produced it himself, not with Jonathan Wilson, but 'Pure Comedy' was. So, I'm assuming its a new album.

    • @1porter

      LP4 (Pure Comedy was LP3) is almost finished and will be released in 2018. Pretty amazing considering that most artists take 3-4 years per album cycle. Tillman works harder...

      tbh i think he’s joking and being sarcastic, he just released pure comedy so there’s no real new album until like a couple years.

    Father John Misty, why did Fleet Foxes have to go on without you? Didn’t he write some of the songs? Idk. He added to the band. Robin’s voice was and is amazing, they just needed more masterpieces like “Mykonos.” Seriously. I know it may sound like a typical criticism. It is. But, Fleet Foxes should have been the next thing to go really big. They just needed less songs appealing to the hippies around campfires and more heart tearing songs like “Mykonos.” Father John Misty is fun to watch and his lyrics are wisely comical and intelligent. But, it happens too much. Great bands ending. The Cardinals, The original Fleet Foxes, Jonathan Singleton and The Grove, Michael King & The Grounders. :) Ryan is is getting those wise and heart humbled tunes out now. And what happened to Rufus Wainwright? C’mon, Rufus.

    I loved Honeybear, hated this last record. Hope the new one is good. And as much as I enjoy FJM's music, Ryan Adams is certainly right about his pretentiousness but again, that pretentiousness can be somehow endearing (like on Honeybear).

    • @natanaru
      @natanaru 6 років тому +2

      Hearsticles I think he kinda basks in his pretentiousness. Its kinda what I like abour him.

    • @CipherSerpico
      @CipherSerpico 6 років тому +23

      Hearsticles Stop calling music “pretentious”. There is no such thing. ALL art involves some form of ego, or “pretension”. If you wanna call jazz or fusion pretentious, I would understand that because it’s just guys taking turns soloing over each other.
      Pretension implies arrogance in that the artist is trying show how “clever or sophisticated” they are. Writing pop songs and philosophical lyrics does not mean you are trying to show the world how “clever” you are. There is absolutely nothing wrong with writing philosophical or political lyrics. The greatest lyricists of all time: Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Lennon ... all wrote philosophically and politically.
      The people that call someone like Father John Misty “pretentious”, are the same people that say Kanye West is a genius, and give his albums perfect scores in their reviews. So, someone who literally says “I am a genius, I am a God”, and who constantly talks about how brilliant he is ... is not pretentious... But writing a well thought out lyric, the way FJM does - *is* pretentious? That’s absolutely ridiculous. This generation just likes to say the word “pretentious” because they think that makes them sound intelligent-which actually is the very definition of pretension.
      Music is either good or bad. You either like it, or don’t like it. Saying that you don’t like music because it is “too pretentious”, is ridiculous - AND pretentious, in and of itself.

    • @thegerams
      @thegerams 6 років тому +1

      No, he didn't bash him. He actually liked the idea so much that he covered a few of the RA-Taylor Swift covers.

    • @jadagreen4550
      @jadagreen4550 6 років тому +6

      T. Just checked. Apparently he did. That wasnt actually a hommage to Ryan but it was criticism and it was done to kind of mock Ryan. He also called Ryan's cover album a grotesque stunt. It explains Ryan's twitter rant. I doubt Ryan would attack him for no reason. Whatever it is though I dont even care all that much. Just make good music.
