myarea51 maybe FJM just isn't for you if you associate when he does with "cringey and pseudo-deep". Like, listen to his albums and then ask yourself why interviewers would ask him questions that are framed as profound. If you want to watch some celeb be light hearted and jokey on a talk show about their new movie - congrats, there's a bagillion cases of that elsewhere. 100 bagillion. They're all ~so cringeyyy~ though.
JebaJebaJemeh Josh is a person first, a goof second and an artist third. In that order. He is a team player who adjusts to whatever interview style he's presented with in any given situation (which is a rare skill among artists) unless it gets super stupid so that not even he can work with what he's getting or the interviewer clearly has never heard a single song of his. Meyers gets it and just talks to him like he would to a casual friend he really likes, that's why the interview goes so well. Most interviewers talk to FJM from outer space and then he plays along. Seth was talking to Josh instead. And it shows in all the best ways. This is by no means a criticism ,or any kind of comment, really, on Josh Tillman, but a sincere compliment to Seth Meyers
myarea51 fair enough and admittedly I jumped the gun when I saw "cringey". That said, a talk show is fundamentally different in expectation to a run of the mill interview with whatever festival he's at or whatever, who have certain questions to ask, and want to give him the most attention. Whereas here, the attention is split. There, we get a check list of things to ask, here anecdotal, obvious tone to adhere to etc. also, I had in mind when I read your first comment that you were dismissing the longer, profound interviews like with Q or Zane Lowe or whatever -- but I suppose those are more conversational than rambling too.
The fact that Josh name drops Serge Gainsbourg blows my mind, Fleet Foxes and FJM are 2 of my favorite bands of all time and Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of my favorite actresses. I actually met Josh once when a FJM show in Phoenix AZ sold out, he put my brother and I on the guest list and we got in for free because I told him tickets sold out, he is a stand up dude. The party persona is cool but he is a very smart, passionate musician
I always thought he was a pretentious guy from like one interview I saw a while back. Going though these and a few other interviews he seems like a genuinely cool dude.
Matthew Snyder I think not being afraid of what others think can make someone seem pretentious at first. Not that I think that’s a bad thing, just something I noticed. Seth is also a great interviewer and can really bring out the best in his guests so that might have something to do with it as well.
I think you totally misconstrue the actual definition of "pretentious" or "pretentiousness": "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed" As I said, he--other than St. Vincent or Kendrick Lamar--is the finest music lyricist of his generation. He is incredibly smart and funny and his polish and wit rub people the wrong way, but that doesn't mean he's pretentious. Maybe arrogant or self-centered, but those are different qualities--and are pretty common among the Celebrity Set.
Totally. My bad. I see what you're saying. You were initially not seeing his intellectual depth at first but see that it's authentic after other interviews. I guess I was barking up the wrong tree. If you look at the thread below, you see a lot of people misusing the term. This is my favorite interview with him--it's astonishingly perceptive: ua-cam.com/video/Qqvb1m0YuPo/v-deo.html
"I finally got given a character that I was like 'okay, this is interesting, I can really do this.'" "It's a guy who gets his head blown off within, like, 30 seconds of the film."
“Father John Misty” is just as ridic as a name I made up back in the day, stoned af, while playing pretend with my little cousins (who had no idea I was stoned btw). The name being “Grandpa Randy Simmers”😂.
"...promoting my fifth Marvel X babies movie...staring into the middle distance..." Hahaha they really had to reel it in after that, too dark for late night
💥🔥💥 the ad attached to this is asserting to the factionist public that blue and silver/gold are out - but the black and white cat - " Ashley and James" - still have "c" in the tree - scorch earth black and white feeds Nao now and at 2 and 4
Finally someone who knows to interview FJM without it getting cringy and pseudo-deep

Everyone knows malaprops makes him want to fucking scream.
thing are only deep if you perceive them as such. Pseudo-deep is most often a term used by people who are ignorant of what they're watching.
Josh Tillman should've been casted in A Star is Born
But now with his action star cred, they can cast him in A Star is Bourne.
I'd rather die than see something like that happen
"I look like an actor who's going through a personal crisis. Right now." It's actually not a joke. He looks like Jim Carrey.
I think they were referring to Joaquin Phoenix.
@@wastagwaga yes, I'm still here
Finally! He has a personality that begs an interview. Freaking love that Josh Tillman.
If there were a live action version of BoJack Horseman he will be awesome as BoJack.
Alistair Wetherall or will arnet???
no, Will Arnett is BoJack, can't be other way, but Josh Tillman would be an awesome Judah
Diego Solis UGH YES PLEASE!
💯
Or any voice over job honestly!
Fleet Foxes, Saxon Shore, Demon Hunter and Father John Misty, everything he touches is gold
Julio Cezar Ugh, idk, those first 4 or 5 J Tillman albums 😴
Demon Hunter?
@@hurkamur1 he didn't say his solo stuff under Josh Tillman so
@@johnstamos75 He played drums for them.
@hurkamur1 Agree. But Fear fun is virtuosity
This man literally has it all. Love his new cut too with the short hair, looks really good!
This makes me very happy, him being interviewed by you. Thank you for having him xxx
To summarize, the keys to an authentic performance are:
1) Coughing
2) Tripping

Father John Misty, Dr. Fun. He is really very good at coming up with great stage names.
My gosh he is attractive. In many ways
he's right, time travelling hobo seems interesting
i mean it does, except for he plays that every day in real life
I always thought he was a pretentious guy from like one interview I saw a while back. Going though these and a few other interviews he seems like a genuinely cool dude.
He's genuinely too smart to ever be pretentious, but he does seem like more centered and less fearful of not being liked.
Matthew Snyder I think not being afraid of what others think can make someone seem pretentious at first. Not that I think that’s a bad thing, just something I noticed. Matthew Snyder I think you misunderstood *my* point lol. I was agreeing with you.

this must have been the first interview with fjm where he didn't look totally stoned
Saw his name in the credits of Hotel Artemis last night and I was STUNNED! He did such a good job, and his songs are amazing
All beard and no brow (I love him so much)
"I finally got given a character that I was like 'okay, this is interesting, I can really do this.'"
"It's a guy who gets his head blown off within, like, 30 seconds of the film."
"How did you come up with the nam..."
"Pot."
"Ohhhhhhhh...."
In real life he was up in a tree naked and tripping on mushrooms... True story look it up!
sorry dude my keyboard is being a dick - that was meant for Helen Ripley. But - yay, Josh...
I love this man.
Same, I was reading like the 100th interview of his when it hit me that I actually love this man!
That sarcasm is good material for stand up
Check out his lyrics. The songs are like stand-up music version, at least some of them, part of them.
*sighs* Yet another stranger I am in love with
What a dude to to have a dinner party with, great stories man.
😎 ✌️
Father John Mister entered in the wu tang name generator= "Insane Contender"
more of Josh on talk shows!!
That was a real funny interview, never really heard of this guy!
“Father John Misty” is just as ridic as a name I made up back in the day, stoned af, while playing pretend with my little cousins (who had no idea I was stoned btw). The name being “Grandpa Randy Simmers”😂.
If you close your eyes... doesn't he sound like Robert Downey Jr.?
*GASP*
catbeara yeah.
nope x)
He has a similar vocal cadence to RDJ but the actual sound (pitch) of his voice is different.
Good catch. I'll give it to ya.
Dr. Fun, MAN. What a cool name. He missed out on that.
You are awesome, Father John!
This man has no bad interviews
someone could write a study of humanity based on talk show host laughs
his face when he asks about the name kills me
I love this man
Man I wish he went by Doctor Fun
Father john awesome
late 2015 i was so happy
I want to be Emma Tilman
they broke up
Adam Morina oh no for real?
yea sadly
Adam Morina wtf he made some amazing love songs about her... smh that's sad. Now the songs don't feel the same anymore
Adam Morina she just directed his new video so they’re still working together. I haven’t heard they broke up.
"You didn't put a lot of thought into it."
His entire career.
This is too damn funny
Going to watch Hotel Artemis tonight, that one has a FJM song in the credits!😇
What's the movie he's in?
1johniq22 Hotel Artemis
The movie he's in is "Hotel Artemis," BTW. It should be interesting.
No. Father John Misty fits him.
love this show
The only thing I got from this clip is that the name Dr. Fun is still there for the taking
He should host SNL! He’s a comedy genius…
i didnt know he was that funny
His lyrics are too damn funny for him not to be funny in conversation.
"...promoting my fifth Marvel X babies movie...staring into the middle distance..."
Hahaha they really had to reel it in after that, too dark for late night
1:58 fakest laugh I've ever heard
He sounds just like Peter Sarsgaard
our father, who Art.
If he'd chosen Doctor Fun he could be Trump's physician.
Dude i saw you live i was right there

love the guy to pieces but is no one going to talk about his shoes
His dorky shoes work as hipster counterbalance.
Time travelling hobo, words out of my mouth
Nice
What movie was he in?
He funny
gabbi3 was thinking the same thing he is a funny guy and he is a great singer 😃🎼
Seth is like Jimmy Fallon, if Fallon wasn’t terrible.
whats the name of the movie?
What was the movie?
I gotta man crush on him
Gaga introduced me to him , seems like a cool guy !
He sounds a bit like the actor Ryan Hurst from Sons of Anarchy.
he thicc
i was in the crowd
Seth john mayer myers
at the tivoli =]
Josh? See you there
Am i the only one who father John misty reminds me of Casey Affleck?

sipping vanilla chai in Hong Kong at the time this interview was filmed, thank you for asking. they are doing quite well.
Indie Folk's John Mayer.
Nope nope not at all awful example just terrible
Big fan of FJM and John Mayer here
What about father guido sarduccie?
Who’s here in 2024…
this dude is just blindingly white in the thumbnail
It’s white Jesus himself
When i heard he's artistic name, it take's me back to the classic: Dr John - ua-cam.com/video/S_UYPu5RFXI/v-deo.html
You saved me from so much
its a me orsen wells
I came here to listen to Father John Misty talk. not to hear seth cackle over him talking
He gives me this cult leader vibe
Love FJM
Wow this host is absolutely obnoxious I’ve never seen the show and I’m pretty jazzed about that
seth stop talking over the guest
Funny because Josh Groban's birth name is Joshua Groban.
That's the joke idiot
where’s his eyebrows
