Just stumbled across this video! The nostalgia and memories this brought up were mega and somewhat emotional! I had this exact kit in 88, I was 14! One of the uprights broke within first week! Parts were easy to get though! I'd love another one now for my retro room, but would need to be an original 80s one and I've seen the prices! I've spent more on one vintage electronic item though so I don't rule one out if can drop on the right one. Great vid BTW, loved it.
Hi Glenn, after watching this I went up in the loft to check my Avante. Can’t remember exactly when I got it but it was probably just on the switch from the first edition to the second. I say that because I found the first edition manual but the later front uprights on the car and in the box... 2 first edition uprights completely unused that I never installed. Both sets must have come with the kit as I didn’t buy any extras and knew nothing of the weakness of the first edition until watching your vids. Hope that’s of interest. Loved seeing the Avante packaging in this vid, brought back some special memories!
I LOVE that tamiya model. Purchased one in mint condition about 5 years ago on ebay (kit, untouched, first release) keeping it as one of my most preciated treasures. Another one when they re-released it, to bash it regularly. For me it's the coolest rc buggy out there. Nice vid, sir, keep them up!
Glenn, I’m so very jealous. What an incredible and truly astonishing find. I hope you plan to keep it NIB. It’s nice to show the kids today how the companies used to package their products and make the unboxing a real unique experience for the consumer. Seeing all those old pamphlets and advertisements brings back many childhood memories and makes me want to go out and acquire another model. (Hopefully the Mrs. will allow it)
This is it Glenn. This is how I dearly remember the kits back in the day. The way the packing was done. Such detail. It was such a buzz opening the boxes. I was never a facts and stats man... but I believe this model was made to see if tamiya could provide a proper race buggy that would appeal to the lads racing The kyosho‘s and the like. I believe this was launched as almost a base of a car to which you would set up an tweak to what you as individual wanted for the track. I suppose it was almost an experiment to see if there was a future in the area of racing. TRF followed but in my very humble opinion I don’t believe racing hooked tamiya in a way the it did the other manufactures. Very cool thing though Glenn👍👍
That is the kit I had! There was no motor included. UK bought, Dec '88 in Edinburgh. Love the mega rare uprights. Is that because I've seen tougher hot butter!
i’m confused by your video , I can remember these when they came out, my auntie‘s brothers owned a chain of model shops in the 1980s called The Model Shop, they had branches in Worcester Bristol Gloucester etc they were one of the main buyers from RIKO Ltd They still trade in models to this day under the banner antics online. I can vividly remember the one with out the motor came after the launch of the ones that had the motor, I can remember it like yesterday, as soon as that Avante came out I had it to race , it had the technicagold and the trigger RC ASpec unit, it was the first one I race with the trigger set up and I hated it because I preferred the sticks etc I don’t know about any other parts of the world but in the UK those cars came with a technic gold from launch .
Did they have one in Leeds/ crossgates as I used to live in that store ha ha it's still there now. My friend had one without the motor I gave him your dynatech
My friend had this kit, I thought they all came this way, I ended up giving my mate a dynatech motor from my 8.4 boomerang I'd had enougth by then and now roll on 30 years I have boomerang, hornet and neo scorcher lol. Although I'm sure his chassis plate was carbon fibre or black fibre glass. He definitely bought it later than the first release maybe 1990
From what I recall, the Avante was always available in 2 versions, kits with or without the Technigold motor. I believe the reason kits were sold without motors was simply because the Technigold was not a very good race motor, and Tamiya probably knew that. It may have been Tamiya's best at the time, but it couldn't compare to the hand-wound modifieds of Reedy, Trinity, Twister, Losi, etc. Also, true racing buggies pretty much never came with motors since racers always installed whichever motor was best suited for the track they raced on.
Great find mate. I have a first release avante too. I also had one bitd, with regards the motor I think it was simply some markets came with the technigold others didn't. I'm in UK and we got the motor. Us didn't I don't know about other markets. Keep up the good work.
Glenn I agree with your opinion about this being a bit more valuable. It makes sense that if this was an afterthought/ more affordable kit, we would see many more on the market. I personally have seen plenty of NIB with the motor, but this is a first seeing one without. Along with the early coded manual, and parts, all points to it being one of the first. Plus Im planning on winning it in the drawing, so of course its the more rare version! :)
Hi Glenn, I hope you're doing ok? No videos for a while now😢 I've just got my second 2011 Avante. The new re re re😅 and this one is going to be built and run. Will the re re egress carbon steering upgrades work on the Avante as the hop up kits are impossible to find?
I didn't even know that a motorless version of this kit was even available...never seen one. here are my thoughts. I believe that you indeed have a very rare version of this kit...like I said I have never seen one ever and I have been a Tamiya collector since I was 13...33 years now, and as far as the idea of it being offered as a cheaper version due to lackluster sales...that doesn't work for me because any savings realized on the purchase of the kit would have been lost once you had to buy a motor from another manufacturer. I believe this version was planned and offered to people who were serious about racing and were going to use other motors. My only question is how people seem to know so much about first editions versus 2nd 3rd etc...I have never understood where this info comes from...I always here MK1 this and Mk1 that...but when I check my kits the info I read or see never seems to match up to what I have...The only thing I know for sure is my kits are all originals...the rest of their history is mostly a mystery to me. great video!!
I brought my avante in 1990 at otley models UK and its exactly same as the one you have (no motor). I still have the box but sadly sold the car to a friend in 1993

I think it was made to compete with losi and kyosho and the rc10 . it was a very nice kit though was real advanced for a tamiya kit
👍😎Avante awesome!
Thank you for sharing this video with us 👍👍👍
The blister packs were so much more sexy looking when you opened a box. But to find one of these was cool with being rare.
Thanks for sharing this with us 👌
What a great find !!!

How on earth does a kit like that remain unused and not binned for 30 odd years!!!! What a really rare find.

You should get the tamtec stuff to.
Great video..
The springs looks a bit dark to me
I brought my avante in 1990 at otley models UK and its exactly same as the one you have (no motor). I still have the box but sadly sold the car to a friend in 1993
Are you going to make the kit. And put the hotes brushless motor you can buy today for it.
Must of cost a fair bit!? Great kit👌
What a great find, I dread to think what it cost you... I'm assuming you got it for spares for your Avante runner. 😜
Gary Rawlins one just sold in the box on eBay last week- less than $400
Hi glen. I think the rothmans changed on the 959 due to tobacco advertising bring no longer acceptable on toys
Oh No you opend the Box ! Now its 100 Euro , Dollar or Pounds less worth :))
Is the motor blister sealed with that note inside from the factory, or was the motor etc removed and replaced?
Tim Toolman
It’s all sealed buddy 👊🏻
First edition is sure to be more valuable as are all collectible products
What happened to this, you still got it?
Nice, must have cost a bomb?
Get it built
How much did you pay for it?
Your gonna kick yourself giving this away mate in a few yrs 😬😬
