Why I No Longer Work on Onan Generators
Over the years, I've worked on a variety of generators, but I've come to a point where I've decided to no longer work on Onan generators. Here are the reasons behind my decision:
Reliability Issues: In my experience, Onan generators often face recurring issues that can be quite frustrating. Despite regular maintenance, they tend to develop problems that aren't as common with other brands.
Parts Availability: Finding parts for Onan generators can be a hassle. Even when parts are available, they are often more expensive compared to other brands. This not only affects the repair process but also increases the cost for customers.
Complexity in Repairs: Onan generators are notoriously complex to repair. Their design and engineering can make even simple repairs a time-consuming and difficult process. This complexity often leads to longer repair times and higher labor costs.
Customer Dissatisfaction: Because of the frequent issues and high repair costs, customers who own Onan generators are often dissatisfied. This dissatisfaction reflects poorly on my business, even though the problems are inherent to the product.
Better Alternatives: There are many other generator brands that offer better reliability, easier repairs, and more readily available parts. By focusing on these brands, I can provide better service to my customers and ensure their satisfaction.
Given these factors, I have decided to stop working on Onan generators. My goal is to provide the best possible service, and this decision allows me to do that by focusing on brands that offer greater reliability and ease of maintenance.

I own an RV Repair business and I absolutely love Onan generators. They are a cash cow for my business. I have been in business for 41 years and are set up to make the repairs easier than for most repair technicians. We keep a number of reconditioned Onan's in inventory and offer to swap the customers problem gen set for one of our reconditioned units for s set price. This way we can bench their unit and repair it at our leisure. Love your vids :)

I tried to work on one years ago.... No more. I do have a Jackson Vibrators Generator from the 60's that works very well.

Sorry you have had so many problems. I have a camper with an Onan generator. It is a 2015 model and knock on wood I have had no problems. I change oil every year and it works every time I crank it.

I worked in the film industry and all the Teamster drivers had trailers with Onan generators and they hated them they were always breaking down.

I worked on generators for many years, primarily on marine diesels, but also did quite a few r/v and gas units. The problem, prmaily with Onan and Kohler, is the absolute stupid overengineered control systems, and like you said, the cost of their proprietary parts. One of the best generators was a small name brand that used a brushless alternator and had a Kubota diesel that only would shut off with either high coolant temp or low oil pressure. I saw one in a boat with over 50K hours on it. Simple system, no headaches.

I'm a motorbike mechanic and some of the bikes I work on are a total pain. Some bikes you have to strip down to just get to the spark plugs. Then the customer doesn't want to pay the labor charges to do the job. It's getting hard to find mechanics now-a-days because of the low industry wages, complexity of servicing, plus customer attitudes and wanting everything done in half an hour.

I have a 2005 microlite 30 amp 2800watt, 120 volt . Only the carb and governor arms,, springs needed service. Governor still forces throttle wide open on cold start, due to it's old school exhaust heat adjusted. I modified it from rv use, mount to a wheeled cart, standing 3 gal gas can for the 12v fuel pump. I have to close throttle half, and auto choke cycles during cranking..unit starts but governor wants to open throttle too far on load app., then engine (5.5hp) staggers to stay running, It runs, makes power..just hard startup. No pull recoil, relies on 12vdc 7ahr sla battery..one thing I never checked was valve lash..old L style, not ohv .

Parts for them are at the highest level possible and no aftermarket parts eather
I just tell the customer to locate and buy the parts and I will put it on
I’m not wasting 4/6 trying to get parts and get approval from customer

So, if someone is working with pharma, he/she is pharmacist, if is capable of contorting herself, she is contortionist, that "ist" appears. Now if dealing with Onan...

As for why those things are still being produced is beyond reality, someone needs to come up with a smaller lighter inverter generator that fits in the same place for much less money, then you just drop the onan and bolt in a much better replacemnt in the same spot.
