Its the culture of people in those countries. They don't want to give away the secrets of their trade but, at the same time, they want to show off. That's why they seem to make critical mistakes or they avoid replacing things they should replace. Anyone can clean up an engine with 0 skill but not everyone knows how to replace rings, hone cylinders, compress rings, etc.
@@ryelor123 True. I've seen many "how to" videos from the US and UK that skip a lot of important steps that cause the viewers to end up in over their heads. I have had to bail out many of these people because of this. There are good presenters but there are plenty of terrible ones. "Scotty Kilmer" is terrible. He makes me want to reach through the internet and slap the crap out of him, lol. He's so ridiculous, he's funny to me but there are so many people who think he knows what he's doing, lol.
Yeah, most of the primitive technology ones are faked. Yeah, we completely dug this huge hole in the ground with sticks. Never mind the tread marks from a track hoe.
One of the reasons I and many others follow your channel is because we know enough about small engines to know that you know how to fix them! As an aside I have a Husqvarna 240 strimmer (brush cutter) hanging around in my garage with a blade on it I decided yesterday that after 4 years hanging there I might see if it would go NO new fuel just some discoloured something in the bottom of the tank 5 pulls and she's running! Added new fuel and she ran all day, the wee sweetie! 😊
Your restoration video was awesome! I never knew there were fake restorers out there. I guess the first clue was they just happened to have someone filming their "hunt" for something to restore. Keep up the good work!

this one was kinda fun. as a retired german car mechanic i play with small engines for a small side hustle. i want to say you,steve and donny are great sources. other tubers might spend way too much time on what should be way too obvious. i mean fresh gas and clean carb is mechanic 101. give me a break. good work. keep em coming.

They intentionally do things wrong so that DIYrs will fail at repairs and come to them. They know what they're doing and they fix the stuff correctly before sale but they don't want others to know how its done correctly. Its a common strategy for preventing competition. We in the west really don't understand how odd we are to the rest of the world for sharing accurate and honest information about our skills.

I have considered doing some parody videos of some of the fake stuff. Electronic and diy welder videos are ridiculous. My impression is that you can build anything with a crescent wrench, sheet metal shears, soldering iron, hot glue gun, 9v battery and zip ties. You do an excellent job with your content of real life experiences. Being a two stroke fan brought me to your channel but your professionalism and presentation keeps me watching. Thank you

40 years ago, while interviewing for a small engin shop mechanic, we set up a saw indical to your grandfather's saw with 5 defects and asked the candidates why doesn't this saw cut wood. I was astounded how many people missed the fact that the chain was backward . This was especially concerning when the job title said chainsaw experience required .
A customer brought a bare chain into my shop for sharpening, picked it up Friday. Monday he’s back, chainsaw in hand, reaming my axe out about my complete lack of skill in sharpening. I took the saw, asked him to follow me to the bench, while I turned the chain around on the bar. Sliced a couple of wafers from my test log and handed it back to him without a word. He slinked off like a beaten mutt, saying nothing. Never saw him again. Don’t need “customers” like that anyway.
I don't care if the video is longer as long as it has the same entertainment & educational value as your regular videos. I would watch an 1+ long video no issues.

i, for one, like your longer videos because you take the time to cover the finer details of what is needed to get things fixed. you have helped me get a few things done that i was not sure i should attempted. not to mention you look a lot better than any of the guys i have seen. your grandpas old chainsaw video was great. i think it is the first time i ever saw you do a restoration on anything up to and including paint. it looked great when you were done. keep making vids.

Bre, In the aviation world this kind of restoration is called a Krylon overhaul. You clean it up and spray paint it to look pretty. By the way, I stopped in to meet Chickanic at her shop and she was very friendly and kind. I even got some Chickanic stickers! She is the best.

A great video. Someone that has been working at what you do for years! well you get pretty dam good and what you do. My last 10 years doing the same job before retiring. I watch on youtube operators doing the same job and yes you can see right through some of their videos. I enjoy what you post thank you.
I've seen those fake videos and it's mostly people from other countries watching them! But I have to say a few times in the past as in 25 years ago I welded up holes in top of pistons on old snowmobiles and run them for years with no issues! So now your restoration vid on a 75 dollar saw makes sense lol. Good stuff as always!
3rd worlders don't like it when people fix things for free. They want business from their community and thus lie to people in their communities about how things are fixed so that people will have to rely on them. Its depressing since that's one of the things that contributes to those countries being so poor. However, they still want customers so at least we don't have to worry about surgeons making videos where they incorrectly do surgery.
I hope you know your videos are in a different league, your enjoyable to watch very informative and calm, no bravado or macho moves, I watch your videos more than TV itself, so you just keep on keepin on.
Now I’m going to have to restore my poulan super 25 vintage 70’s edition, it’s been on a shelf for a while and after watching your channel this year I think I can get it back to life!

Things like that that are sold on the international market are way more expensive in 3rd world countries due to PPP. 1 USD may buy a lot of food there but it has the same - or less - purchasing power for things that are sold on the international market. Those name-brand saws were well used and they probably did fix them properly afterwards. In those countries, professionals don't want to share the secrets of their trade. One way is to be secretive about things and another way is to lie to the audience so that if other people in their community try to fix things themselves, they'll never get it right. Its a common tactic in 3rd world countries and one of the reasons why they're so poor.

I exclusively buy cars from the Volkswagen group, because the shared hive knowledge on the internet about the cars is much better than other brands. I tried to help my neighbour with his BMW, and it was soon clear that knowledge about them is worth real money and kept in closed circles. All forum threads about his problem ended in one of three disappointing ways: crickets, the shop fixed it, I sold the car with the problem unsolved

Another great video Bre. I consider a lot of those rusty restorations as 'Bait and Switch' Videos. They show how they take apart a rusty item then in the end show you a replica item that is painted the same color and make you believe that is the same saw!!Those of us mechanically inclined know that a scored piston and cylinder put back together is NOT going to run!! Ok for real. True story. I went down to the titanic site with a mini sub I made from a 55 gal barrel, a sheet of plexiglass and 3/4” pvc pipe, oh and some JB weld. Anywho, I found a Husqvarna chainsaw (early model) that was completely covered in ocean stuff. I flush it out, added some gas and it cranked before I could completely pull the cord. True story 😉

I’ve never seen a “restoration” video - at least for chain saws. With your intelligence and integrity, I don’t feel I’ve missed anything - though not seeing them I’m sure is dumb luck. Keep up the good work.
Its professionals in foreign countries who don't want do-it-yourselfers to fix things. They're only honest about repairs when its something that's no-skill(like cleaning) or when it requires machinery(like engine boring). However, when it comes to critical assembly stuff, they always make "unintentional" mistakes that would render the entire repair pointless at best. Professionals in those countries want business and they don't want their customers knowing how to fix things correctly. In fact, they want to punish customers who try. This is one reason why they insist on putting the chains on backwards or re-using burned up pistons/cylinders.

It's now apparently common for watches as well. Which is even more unbelievable, as a corroded watch has so little metal to start and no chance of working with the corroded parts.
Greetings from Finland! I fixed similar Poulan that i got for free. Just cleaned the gastank, carb and installed new fuel line. Only the tuning of the thing was little weard because the cover over carb didn't have any holes, but i got it working still.👌 Strong little saw.
If you made a week long video, I'd watch it, because I learn so much about small engine repair from you. I might have to pause it to have meals and sleep, but I'd watch it...
Love your videos. I learn a lot from them. Those fake videos play on the stupidity of people. No way you are going to make rusty iron and pitted aluminum look "new" .They are an insult to my intelligence. Also the guy that found the saw in the tree is, I think, the same person that is in many other questionable DIY videos on YT.
I thought I was filing my chain wrong until my father-in-law showed me I had the chain on backwards. I still suck at sharpening, but the chain is going the right way!
I think they are doing it for humor. I can't believe for a second that he somehow found muddy pieces in trees(did it fall out of the mud, into the tree?) and cleaned the bar so well that the rust turned into paint.
what about you totally flumaxed by briggs 2hp where you thought recoil freewheel was a broken clutch? and you never retensioned or lubed recoil spring?? and ignored totally reliable points and condenser and cut off good coil?? what about getting crankcase gasket when it was a low hour engine. you forced plastic pickup tube when all you needed was carb loose to clear wheel. you never checked or adjusted valve gap but you lapped valves that makes valve gap tighter. you need to clean valves in a drill, not with a wire head in drill. you have clearly copied what you have seen people do but don't actually understand engineering.
We knew the rewind clutch wasn't broken, but a new one was much faster. Points and condenser? Really? The electronic coils are much more available and reliable. The fuel tube has to be forcefully pushed into the pickup. The "gap" is called "lash" and was checked. Valves need to be lapped about every 200-300 hours, check your owners manual. We were at home not at the shop, so like most people at home who don't own a shop we cleaned the valves with what was available and this works great. This isn't "engineering" its repair, at home away from specialize tools.
Those fake videos are a right laugh. They find alsorts from motorbikes to kitchen equipment to iPhones lol. As you said most know they are faking it and say so but some don’t

Another great video Bre. I consider a lot of those rusty restorations as 'Bait and Switch' Videos. They show how they take apart a rusty item then in the end show you a replica item that is painted the same color and make you believe that is the same saw!!Those of us mechanically inclined know that a scored piston and cylinder put back together is NOT going to run!! Keep up the great work!!

Ok for real. True story. I went down to the titanic site with a mini sub I made from a 55 gal barrel, a sheet of plexiglass and 3/4” pvc pipe, oh and some JB weld. Anywho, I found a Husqvarna chainsaw (early model) that was completely covered in ocean stuff. I flush it out, added some gas and it cranked before I could completely pull the cord. True story 😉
@grumpyoldvet2304....Wow...that is amazing that you found a Husqvarna chainsaw down there. But...I hope you brought it up to the surface very slowly so it wouldn't get the "bends"...lol..!!

It's important to be cautious when watching such content online and not fall for deceptive practices. Kudos to the creator for shedding light on these scams and providing viewers with an authentic perspective.
I’ve never seen a “restoration” video - at least for chain saws. With your intelligence and integrity, I don’t feel I’ve missed anything - though not seeing them I’m sure is dumb luck. Keep up the good work.
Its professionals in foreign countries who don't want do-it-yourselfers to fix things. They're only honest about repairs when its something that's no-skill(like cleaning) or when it requires machinery(like engine boring). However, when it comes to critical assembly stuff, they always make "unintentional" mistakes that would render the entire repair pointless at best.
Professionals in those countries want business and they don't want their customers knowing how to fix things correctly. In fact, they want to punish customers who try. This is one reason why they insist on putting the chains on backwards or re-using burned up pistons/cylinders.

It's now apparently common for watches as well. Which is even more unbelievable, as a corroded watch has so little metal to start and no chance of working with the corroded parts.
Greetings from Finland! I fixed similar Poulan that i got for free. Just cleaned the gastank, carb and installed new fuel line. Only the tuning of the thing was little weard because the cover over carb didn't have any holes, but i got it working still.👌 Strong little saw.
If you made a week long video, I'd watch it, because I learn so much about small engine repair from you. I might have to pause it to have meals and sleep, but I'd watch it...
Love your videos. I learn a lot from them. Those fake videos play on the stupidity of people. No way you are going to make rusty iron and pitted aluminum look "new" .They are an insult to my intelligence. Also the guy that found the saw in the tree is, I think, the same person that is in many other questionable DIY videos on YT.
I thought I was filing my chain wrong until my father-in-law showed me I had the chain on backwards.
I still suck at sharpening, but the chain is going the right way!

I think they are doing it for humor. I can't believe for a second that he somehow found muddy pieces in trees(did it fall out of the mud, into the tree?) and cleaned the bar so well that the rust turned into paint.

what about you totally flumaxed by briggs 2hp where you thought recoil freewheel was a broken clutch? and you never retensioned or lubed recoil spring?? and ignored totally reliable points and condenser and cut off good coil?? what about getting crankcase gasket when it was a low hour engine. you forced plastic pickup tube when all you needed was carb loose to clear wheel. you never checked or adjusted valve gap but you lapped valves that makes valve gap tighter. you need to clean valves in a drill, not with a wire head in drill. you have clearly copied what you have seen people do but don't actually understand engineering.
We knew the rewind clutch wasn't broken, but a new one was much faster. Points and condenser? Really? The electronic coils are much more available and reliable. The fuel tube has to be forcefully pushed into the pickup. The "gap" is called "lash" and was checked. Valves need to be lapped about every 200-300 hours, check your owners manual. We were at home not at the shop, so like most people at home who don't own a shop we cleaned the valves with what was available and this works great. This isn't "engineering" its repair, at home away from specialize tools.
