Forbiden Siren was actually the first game that made me loose sleep. I was watching my parents playing it. There was a school level if i remember correctly. And in it you have to save a kid from the school. And what specially terrified me was that if the "monsters" caught the child. Instead of showing what they're gonna do. It just showed them staring at him.
omg same i was only young and this was a level in a demo so i played it and was too scared to even move out of the classroom that you begun in, literally had no context for what it was about either and it comes up with a hint to press a certain button to tell the boy to hide but didnt know what from and it was sooo dark, after i mustered the coursge to leave the classroom i soon learned that you see things from the enemies perspective and they literally do stare at the boy and try taking you out, i could never play it i thought it was literally the scariest thing i had ever come across in my life it really did affect me as a child but also grew on me that it created fear and horror soo well

SIREN is the peak of survival horror. No other game comes close to capturing the feel of utter desolation & dread. There is simply nothing else like it ever made-before or since.
My favorite thing about Cry of fear is that it takes place in Stockholm. Not enough games do that. There are beautiful and haunting places to explore in Stockholm. More games should do it.
Man Siren is such an experience. Honestly, it really is one of those games that’s best experienced through watching someone else play it. Because something about the story and characters is pure lightning in a bottle, and I don’t think the second game or the reimagined Blood Curse could capture that same feeling. Nothing beats our last three guys meeting up near the end and discussing all the insanity before splitting back up to take care of different issues around the village. It’s the whole range of uplifting and inspiring to horrific and depressing. A true diamond in the rough

Thank you so much for doing Amnesia: The Bunker. It is my favorite horror game of all time, that’s because I’m also biased because I love WWI and especially France. If you ever replay it someday I suggest playing it on the hardest difficulty at night while alone. I remember I threw a grenade and hid under a table and then the monster broke down the wooden door to my room and almost broke that table I was underneath. There’s also times where I threw a flare and down the hallway you could see the monsters silhouette, not to mention the absolute stunning fire physics where you can use gas cans to make a trail a fuel and light it with a Molotov, especially good from such a small studio. The plot twist at the end was absolutely insane, the story was good, the 4 sentences of voice acting were good lmao, the graphics were good, it had a badass protagonist and a cool monster, and the soundtrack and atmosphere were amazing.
I still haven't completed Amnesia The Bunker. It is easily one of tye GREATEST Horror games of All Time. I've never played a Horror game that made me feel unsafe and unnerved damn near at all times. Tye Atmosphere, environment and Monster itself are a 10. Ot truly is a Horror Master piece. This cowardly bitch would recommend it to anyone that's got the nerve 👍

I think the thing that makes amnesia the bunker so effective is how it uses a realistic world war setting to really make you believe the suffering that the main threat inflicts. Our brain has been trained by viewing war media to start to empathize with the people involved, and the moment that really got to me was the german prisoner. Imagine being a prisoner stuck underground with people you cant understand, and then suddenly they all disappear and the thing that imprisoned you kept you alive to wait in silence. Such a genius horror concept.
My absolute favourite horror game is "Lost in vivo". Its a psychological linear horror game where we loose our service dog in a storm and go down the sewers to find and save her. It gives silent hill vibes and is about 3/4 hours long. I can really only recommend it to anyone who likes horror, for me personally its an absolute masterpiece. Id love to hear your take on it! (its by akuma kira, the same guy who made spookys house of jumpscares)
One of the scariest and best horror games I've ever played is Darkwood. Every video about Darkwood you can find is about how good the game is and how scary it can be while being a top-down view game. Definitely try it out
A game that got me and my brother was Voyager-19,It takes my fear of massive things and space horror to a Vhs analog horror/ Iron lung type style. It was something that my younger brother who knows a lot about space and planets, scared him badly cause he felt so disturbed about the concept and the fact that it doesn't go the normal "Scary alien on my ship Aaa!" type story.

I just recently finished Silent Hill 2, and it's the only horror game I've ever finished because I'm such a wuss when it comes to horror games. The characters, narrative, and overall vibe were so good that they made me face my fears and push forward. I know the series is popular as hell, but if yall havent played it, its so good! You gotta try this roguelike horror game called Monstrum. I don’t know whether it falls into the “backtracking” aspect you don’t like (you have to collect items to repair one of three escape routes) and if you die you start a new run over again. But man the first time I played this game way back in 2018 it terrified me. You should definitely give it a shot
Siren Blood Curse always creeped me out. I only ever had the demo on PS3 as a teen but it generally disturbed me how eerie it was, and how scary the enemies were.
Eternal darkness is my favorite horror game of all time. I was very young when I played it and had no idea who H.P.Lovecraft was prior to playing it,Cosmic horror is very difficult to pull off and they absolutely nailed it. The tone of how people completely lose all semblance of sanity after trying to comprehend the unknown gives me chills.
Recommend Silent Hill 3 for scares. Silent Hill 2 has the better story, but I'd be a liar if I said SH3 didn't terrify me when I played it as a teenager.

Cry of Fear holds up so well. The dark and uncanny nature still messes with me all these years later. I love horror, but I’m pretty desensitized to most things in the genre. Outlast Trials is probably the modern equivalent of truly dark and messed up. Both games at some point give me that “oh no…..” feel lol

I've finally accepted that Cry of Fear has become "popular," I remember that day I watched a youtube video, "The best horror game you've never played," and it only had 1'000 views. Went on for a year being obsessed with said game, and every time I brought it up to my friends, they said "yeah I played it. It's ok." But I think I'm finally able to accept it's a popular game and not some niche treasure I have as my own to share

have you played system shock 2? despite being an old game, the sound design is amazing and terrifying. shodan taunts you throughout the game, infected crew members talk to themselves, and shodan's experiments are nightmare fuel such as the birth mother. "babies must rest... babies must feed"

I'm very curious about Devour, it looks like a fun game, and very up my alley! As for Amnesia: The Bunker, I personally loved it. It truly truly scared me, the Beast is so scary to me. The atmosphere was just so oppressive. Have you played all the other Amnesia games btw? I honestly think they are really good (Dark Descent is definitely the scariest and best for me though). Also 8:12 made me sad :(

Man you really should give GTFO a try , find a team of really determined dudes, and go give it a try. The overall ambiance + the monsters and tactics revolving around the fact that you should avoid them A LOT, even with guns, is what makes this game terrifying to me Also, beautiful graphics and nice setup, a really enjoyable original fps, even with the backtracking that the gameplay involve sometimes, i really think you could enjoy it!
Haven't played any of them, but when it comes to "asian horror games" I remember being really scared when playing the "Fatal frame"-games. Highly recommend, at least my 14 year old me.😆
Cry of Fear is definitely up there for scariest horror games. The soundtrack, sound design and environments all combine to make the game terrifying. I feel like if it wasn't for those and the good use of limited light the game really wouldn't be as scary. A few enemies like Crazyrunners, Crazy Women, Babies and Faceless are pretty freaky but I feel like the majority of enemy designs aren't all that scary on their own. Fasters' death animations are kind of funny after you get used to them and Slowers and Sewmo are basically just bloody people, barely anything more than basic zombies. Another excellent horror game I have to recommend is Darkwood. Despite having an overhead view it manages to be incredibly scary thanks to some of the best sound design in any game I've played and giving you a limited cone of vision. The game's setting and story get incredibly disturbing and the way the game messes with you at night while you're forced to hole up in relatively small hideouts at night and enemies make their way in trying to find you is incredibly dread inducing. I had to quit the first time I played it. And it manages to do this while not having any jumpscares.
Devour is such a goated game, I play it with my friends every now and then and each time we end up shitting ourselves. Especially on the asylum map, by far the scariest one in the game.

Cry of Fear holds up so well. The dark and uncanny nature still messes with me all these years later. I love horror, but I’m pretty desensitized to most things in the genre. Outlast Trials is probably the modern equivalent of truly dark and messed up. Both games at some point give me that “oh no…..” feel lol
If you ever get the chance, PT is probably the scariest game I’ve ever played. Looked great for the time, sound design, hearing foot steps after you’ve moved and the general unease it made you feel. Wish it’d got a full game
The way you spoke about the Gmod and Source having this sorta creepy vibe reminds me of how Super Mario 64 has been the subject of more than one video regarding the negative/creepy aura around it.
Cry of Fear is actually a game that gives me a feeling in my chest that I can't explain whenever I do the first missions and especially the camera one. (that jumpscare traumatised me for 10 minutes straight)

I've finally accepted that Cry of Fear has become "popular," I remember that day I watched a youtube video, "The best horror game you've never played," and it only had 1'000 views. Went on for a year being obsessed with said game, and every time I brought it up to my friends, they said "yeah I played it. It's ok."
But I think I'm finally able to accept it's a popular game and not some niche treasure I have as my own to share

Great video! I don't know if you've covered Darkwood yet, but that is undeniably the scariest game I've played. It's a pretty challenging game. The top-down view is very different, and it doesn't look very scary at a glance, but the sound design, monsters and atmosphere is absolutely horrifying.

Oh btw, I have a lil psychological horror game recommendation, its called Mothered. (made by Enigma Studio) Its around 2 hours of gameplay.
It became one of my top fav small indie games because of its story and feel it gives. Look of the environment/character and every glitch are intentional, but yea I'm not 100% sure it will be your thing, but it is a lil recommendation!
have you played system shock 2? despite being an old game, the sound design is amazing and terrifying. shodan taunts you throughout the game, infected crew members talk to themselves, and shodan's experiments are nightmare fuel such as the birth mother.

Man this list is so good! Cry of Fear is definitely the scariest video game I've ever played along with Condemned: Criminal Origins. I'm very curious about Devour, it looks like a fun game, and very up my alley! As for Amnesia: The Bunker, I personally loved it. It truly truly scared me, the Beast is so scary to me. The atmosphere was just so oppressive. Have you played all the other Amnesia games btw? I honestly think they are really good (Dark Descent is definitely the scariest and best for me though).
Also 8:12 made me sad :(
the bunker section is really cool because amneisa the bunker is objectively an amazing and terrifying horror game, but obviously not every game is universally loved. i like that as opposed to being like "this game sucks! its overhyped!", zeark is like "no its great i just didnt enjoy it"

Zeark if you played cry of fear i recommend you to play afraid of monsters, its a early game that the creator of cry of fear made when he was just a teenager
Man you really should give GTFO a try , find a team of really determined dudes, and go give it a try. The overall ambiance + the monsters and tactics revolving around the fact that you should avoid them A LOT, even with guns, is what makes this game terrifying to me
Also, beautiful graphics and nice setup, a really enjoyable original fps, even with the backtracking that the gameplay involve sometimes, i really think you could enjoy it!
Haven't played any of them, but when it comes to "asian horror games" I remember being really scared when playing the "Fatal frame"-games. Highly recommend, at least my 14 year old me.😆

My favorite horror game ever is the original layers of fear. If you haven’t played it I HIGHLY recommend.
Cry of Fear is definitely up there for scariest horror games. The soundtrack, sound design and environments all combine to make the game terrifying. I feel like if it wasn't for those and the good use of limited light the game really wouldn't be as scary.
A few enemies like Crazyrunners, Crazy Women, Babies and Faceless are pretty freaky but I feel like the majority of enemy designs aren't all that scary on their own. Fasters' death animations are kind of funny after you get used to them and Slowers and Sewmo are basically just bloody people, barely anything more than basic zombies.
Another excellent horror game I have to recommend is Darkwood. Despite having an overhead view it manages to be incredibly scary thanks to some of the best sound design in any game I've played and giving you a limited cone of vision. The game's setting and story get incredibly disturbing and the way the game messes with you at night while you're forced to hole up in relatively small hideouts at night and enemies make their way in trying to find you is incredibly dread inducing. I had to quit the first time I played it. And it manages to do this while not having any jumpscares.
