    Thank you for your video it helped me on changing the oil. My late father did all the maintenance on the tractor so I’m now learning to do it all myself.

      Glad it helped you out! I have all the routine X500 maintenance on here too for the other stuff (fuel, air filter, and transaxle fluid)

      @@JoshsGreenGarage do you have one on how to change the blade on the mower deck?

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Рік тому

      I don’t believe I do, it isn’t hard though, you just take the deck off (I have a video on that) then flip it up, and take off either the nut or bolt that holds the blade to the spindle. I usually do it with the deck still attached and lifted all the way. You will need to put some wooden blocks in there though to stop the blades from turning. One of my first ever videos of my D105 might show something about blade removal as I probably took them off to sharpen before selling, so you might get an idea there. Otherwise, I am sure someone has done a video on it.

    After loosening the oil filter try slipping a ziploc sandwich bag over the filter. Slide the bag as close to the open end of the filter and keep it there while loosening it. When the filter is free from the threads slowly pull the filter away from the mower and at the same time tilt it so top of filter is lower keeping old oil in it till you move it away from mower. Still doesn't hurt to have a few disposable towels laid under the filter before loosening it because there will always be a little spillage.

    I just took my filter off for the first time today! I swear they welded it on. I bought a special adjustable oil filter wrench that worked great but like you I had a tough time getting it off.
    And also like you- I have oil everywhere!!!
    Thank you for the great video!!
    Merry Christmas!!

    Great "grown-up" video! Only thing different I do on oil changes is I fill the filter up before replacing it. My diesel Mechanic always recommended that procedure, so I just continued it with everything. The filter element prevents spillage and lubing up the gasket is quicker too.

      Yeah my only problem is spilling oil since the filter is sideways. Plus, oil flows from the outside to the inside of the filter, so I would try to fill it from the edge rather that just dump into the middle, you never know, there might be some small debris from manufacturing or impurities in the oil potentially. Really low chance, but these are things I worry about.

    The floorboard seems to be separate from the rear fenders on the X5 series.
    Are the fenders hinged for easy transmission maintenance?
    Why else would these 2 pieces be separate?
    !

      @JoshsGreenGarage  Рік тому

      Yes, having the fender deck and floorboards separate makes maintenance easier. They are not hinged though.

    Do you recommend changing the oil right after the end of mowing season or right before the beginning of mowing season? I'll put around 25 hours annually on my x590. Thanks.

      Depends in my opinion… is it getting any winter use? If it is getting winter use then just change it when due or I would say before the next mowing season. If it isn’t getting used and staying indoors where climate controlled, it probably doesn’t matter, but may be a good idea before it sets so that metal dust from normal wear doesn’t build up or any kind of deposited start to gunk anything up. If not used, not climate controlled or outside, it should be winterized. I always ran red storage Sta-Bil in mine, and I kept it in a heated garage, so I didn’t bother winterizing the engine. If winterizing is the case I would wait to change it after winter, after the first startup, that way any junk in it can be broken up once the engine warms and then everything can be drained. I’d also do air filter and spark plugs after that startup as well. So me personally, I would just wait til after winter in most cases. Biggest concern is fuel though, not oil. You don’t want to plug up the carb.

      I start it up monthly during the winter so I guess I’ll wait til Spring. Thanks for the information.

    My x590 calls for 2.1 qts. of oil. Do you think 2 qts. will do the job?

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Рік тому

      It would likely work, but I'd be safe and buy the extra quart... Worth it to have if you need to top it off ever.

    How much did the oil level drop once the oil was in the oil filter?

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Рік тому

      Not too much if I remember correctly, not a very big filter.

    What is the viscosity of the engine oil?

    • @JoshsGreenGarage
      @JoshsGreenGarage  Рік тому

      10W-30. Always check the temp range that you will be operating in though, as you can use other viscosities as well.
