Very very helpful. Very clear, well shot and good audio. Way better than the official Deere videos. Really appreciate you taking the time to make and share this info.
I've reviewed this twice and followed the directions this man gave to the letter. I was so easy and it worked to include the motorcraft filter. So here's my question to the 53 who didn't like this highly instructional video... what was it you didn't like? where are your reviews? Where is your video that is better and more instructional? Perhaps there is nothing that would please you? I'd really like to know!
A trick from when they first invented oil filters, put a film of oil on the rubber gasket of the filter. It snugs tightly, doesn't allow the rubber gasket to deform, prevents rubber decomp and burn in on the block, and the filter comes off easier in the next change.
Briggs and Stratton branded oil filters and SAE 30 oil will also work for this mower. Briggs and Stratton engines always recommends SAE 30. However, since John Deere equipment is known to be used in various temperatures, that is why they recommend 10W-30 on all of their mowers. Both oil grades will work on this engine.
Before removing the oil filter, I slide a homemade flat ‘trough’ under the oil filter. I fashioned the trough from a ‘flat’ plastic syrup bottle carefully cut down with a utility knife to half height horizontally, with the bottle laid down on a table, not vertically. I kept a little of the bottom of the syrup bottle so when oil drains, it doesn’t flow back against the engine. The neck of the bottle directs the oil down into the container holding the used oil. Works pretty slick, no mess. That prevents the oil running all over the frame and pulley under the engine. After cutting down the syrup bottle, you actually have two troughs to use, should one break, or a ‘buddy’ borrows it. Also, a chocolate syrup bottle would probably work just as well. Been using my troughs for years now. 🤓
Nice job turn your quart of oil over it pours a lot better. I know you did that on purpose though so you can keep the flow slow but. I got a 2002 F150 lightning with spark plug issues I wish you could help me with.
FYI: The oil container neck should be at the top when pouring the oil to keep the flow smooth and not stutter, that is the purpose of the container design. Take an empty juice container or milk bottle cut off the top and use that piece to fit under the filter with enough length to clear the chassis and cabling and a straight shot down to the drain pan, by cutting and shaping it as you try to install it, then loosen the filter and slip the "half-funnel-half trough" you designed underneath it and then continue unscrewing and removing the filter, or let the excess oil drain before trying to remove the filter, then you can remove it and the modified trough-funnel together.
As a professional mechanic for the past 20 years I have done it that way. It feels unnatural and will still gurgle if you pour too fast. I have found pouring on the side is a happy medium.
I have an older John Deere riding mower LA 100 I have looked and looked and looked both on the engine and every website and UA-cam I can find There must be some mowers made without filters WISH somebody would talk about it
I never liked doing it that was especially on autos. It is very awkward to hold and you will still have the glugging factor if you pour too fast same as when pouring it any other way so I see no benefit to spout up pouring at all.
I have the same exact mower JD 125, I'm wondering what the little square box is just above the oil filter, it has two wires, a red and a yellow. it has a bolt in the middle holding it in place. ..ANYONE KNOW? Thanks.
Hey Makuloco, you saved me a ton of misery on my '07 F150, thanks! Could you tell me if the FL-910S filter will sub out for the John Deere 125424? I have a D160 and this filter looks like it could work, but I want to make certain. There's some skeeze factor on JD's new versions of their filter and I can't tell if it's disinformation or legit information. Much appreciated!
Just have 9 hours on a D125 and changed to full Mobil1 5-30. Should I take it out and put conventional oil in until 50 hours runtime? If so, why? Thanks!
I just purchased a used John Deere Automatic 125 and searched for JD Info and this video popped up. I was very surprised that you had a video about changing the oil on a JD Mower. I have followed you on FordTechMakuloco for years. Later in the day, I went to the other site to look for more JD Videos. I couldn’t even find this video! I was completely confused and had to go back to the viewing history to find it again. Congratulation on the new site! I just hit subscribe and look forward to viewing all these videos. Any other Makuloco channels we should know about?? Makuloco quilting and sewing? LOL
Is the motorcraft oil filter's internal bypass valve rated the same as the JD filter. Though the diameter and threads may be compatible, the internal workings of the filter may not.
Can you please do a video on deck adjustments on this tractor!? I found the front adjustment but can't get the rear of the deck higher than 2" even when set up to 4"
I use straight 30 weight oil. The blended oils show more degradation with time. 30 weight is great for summer and smokes less. During changes I noticed the Oil is not as black.
@@MakulocosHowTos When the oil flow slows down then pull out the dipstick and see what happens! It will drain much faster and completely. Also coat the oil filter O-ring with oil. That will allow you to remove the filter by hand next change. It also prevents the O-ring from baking onto the flange!

Very helpful! Thank you! This saved a widow (me) from paying someone to do it.
You couldn't have explained it any better. Great job. I'm go to go now. You saved me $$ rather paying someone else to do it for me. Thanks!!!!

No need, the sealing surface already has oil on it guaranteed, it will never be dry.
I like your suggestion of using a Motorcraft filter instead of the JD filter. Thanks for the video!
Fold a piece of aluminum foil under the filter and down the frame , no mess .
smarter than him lol
Cardboard work also
Thank you, you do a very good job explaining the process.

Very educational and thorough! THANK YOU!
Nice job on this video , very helpful as a new owner !

I've used plastic cling wrap under the filter to route the oil over the top of the frame.

Thanks have wondered about using a car filter before , there just to high on those short specialty filters .
I have an older John Deere riding mower LA 100 I have looked and looked and looked both on the engine and every website and UA-cam I can find
There must be some mowers made without filters WISH somebody would talk about it
I put shiny side of aluminum foil under filter and bend it so oil from filter runs to pan below!!
Thanks good idea.
Oh no! I use the dull side.😉
Great tip on the replacement oil filter
You can use a piece of cardboard to put under the filter get it to flow into your drain pan works like a charm and easily disposable
My LT 155 calls out for 1.9 quarts (60 oz) with a filter. Will adding a full 2 quarts overfill the engine and cause problems?
I have 2qt of Toro 10w30 but it’s BLUE?!? Is this ok for the kohler 12.5??!
Yep that's what I use and it's the same oil filter my 2011 Crown Vic uses as well.
Great video. Just got a D130. Thanks for making.
Also pre loading the filter we oil is recommended
Will this filter fit my John Deere D140 riding lawn tractor?
I use Walmart`s Super tech 3614 oil filter. Works great.
i dont mow in 50 degree in the dallas ft worth area, so stay with 30 in my riders ??
Great video... I think even I can do this now after watching your video... Thanks for the tips, I think I have a funnel like yous.
Thx for the every day oil change for us newbies . 🇺🇸
Very helpful, really appreciate the special tips. thanks!
If you pour with the spout at the top, you dont get glugging of the oil out of the top. Oil 101.
I never liked doing it that was especially on autos. It is very awkward to hold and you will still have the glugging factor if you pour too fast same as when pouring it any other way so I see no benefit to spout up pouring at all.

I found it, It's a Voltage Regulator.
Excellent presentation
Love the funnel trick!!!
Where can we get that VERY AWESOME funnel from?
Excellent presentation and information.
I run the off side wheels up on a 2x6 in order to cant the engine and drain the oil.
Thank you, that was incredibly helpful.
I was surprised to see you let the oil from the filter run down on the belts.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks!
Trick i did was put a bike pump thing were the dip stick would be than pump air through the system and that gets rid of any sitting oil

what model is this deere, mine is a d110 i think ...
Only thing about using the oil filter , other than the John Deere filter is if something in the engine goes wrong, Your Warranty may be void.
Flat WRONG
Thank you... very good info.

He made these 3 years ago.
Great vid! Thanks for doing it!
Who else knew this guy would use Motorcraft Motor Oil and Filter.....
Is the motorcraft oil filter's internal bypass valve rated the same as the JD filter. Though the diameter and threads may be compatible, the internal workings of the filter may not.
I dont think it matters if the bypass spring rate is higher since the oil should be changed way before it ever plugs up and activates.
where did you find the yellow oil drain funnel???
Great Video!
turn the can so that it doesn't .... glug, glug and then turn the can around.
You had put in more than 2 qts because the filter is bigger
Its always been just a little over 2qts
Can you please do a video on deck adjustments on this tractor!? I found the front adjustment but can't get the rear of the deck higher than 2" even when set up to 4"
I can’t get my oil filter off what do I do
Drive Screw Drive thru oil filter out other side. Use screw driver to turn off filter.
Price was right and shipped quick
I believe my La-115 comes with a extension hose for oil changes.
Thank you
Fashion a piece of cardboard under the filter to direct the oil into the bucket
Punch a hole in the top of the oil filter in the fluted area and when you loosen the filter the oil drains into the drain pan .
It makes a mess no need.
Put a cookie sheet under the oil filter before you remove the filter = no mess!
Cool funnel trick.
thank you so much.helped me alot
been changing oil for 50 years, ALWAYS put a film of oil on the gasket in all engines. otherwise have fun getting the filter off.
I use straight 30 weight oil. The blended oils show more degradation with time. 30 weight is great for summer and smokes less. During changes I noticed the Oil is not as black.
Never a problem here
I don’t agree with not lubing the filter casket
Great video
Maybe a larger funnel ?? D'ya think ?
No
You should put oil on the filter sealing ring, also I think you put the filter on too tight
You say plug on bottom - the drain plug is on the lower left side of the engine, not the bottom.
9:00 OIL FILTER FL910S
Oil got underneath the engine on the electric clutch and drive belt, better wipe that off too next time.
Thank You really well done very helpful !
Helpful...Thxs
Excellent video! Thanks for the tips. I use Fleetguard FL3339 on my Briggs garden tractors.
Put rags down before taking off filter is the way to go.
thank you good jub
Valvoline is the best oil imo
New owner ...thx
I use a paper plate under mine .
It looks like that oil is diluted with gasoline.
Tip ....Remove the oil filter BEFORE you cap the oil drain!
No need
@@MakulocosHowTos When the oil flow slows down then pull out the dipstick and see what happens! It will drain much faster and completely. Also coat the oil filter O-ring with oil. That will allow you to remove the filter by hand next change. It also prevents the O-ring from baking onto the flange!
Good video, but you don't need to tighten the oil filter that extreme. Damn! You almost dented the housing with your hand. No need.
Same as I have been doing for 20 years as a mechanic. Never trust the snug enough attitude especially on a high vibration engine like this.
Wdym dude went hand tight and a little more.
Motorcrap filter and oil? Just awful
Do your research before making such a comment, it makes you look foolish.
Your a tad OCD. Kent
thought i pulled up my f150 videos. thought i was loosing it.
