As a huge Clapton fan, this is really good! Especially considering Sheeran’s forte is singer/songwriter pop, his voice fits surprisingly well. Amazing cover!
Really, really nice to see Ed performing with a live band again. While I love seeing him with the loop pedal, some of the songs start to feel redundant and make it easy to forget how good he can sound with a few more instruments behind him. Also very nice seeing him return to the rock/blues sound that influenced many songs on his older albums. Divide was really lacking in the darker, bluesy songs like Make It Rain, The Man, Don't etc
This is what happens when everyone enjoys their part to play. Probably the best cover ever created. Shout outs to the Background Singers and Drummer in Red who sold it hard.
Andrew Power sorry my mind was a bit weird and I thought you were thinking that he quit playing or something which confused but i get what you mean. I suppose he wanted to focus more on his songwriting and voice once he got as good as he is at guitar. He has definitely improved over the years, if you hear how much he stumbled and all at Shepherd’s Bush and then hear him play now he has definitely gotten better, but I guess he didn’t think he needed to go and overtake Clapton or any of the legends
first riff I remember in my head when I was 5 years old. I could hear the tune in my head, but it took me over 10 - 15 years to find out what the actual song was!!
I'm young now and I love Clapton and Layla so much that I might name my future daughter(if I'll ever fortunately have one) Layla. As of now, my guitar is named Layla[winked].
The Man Called Toyan Ed performed Layla when he was 11 yrs old at some charity event. Ed saw Eric.C performing at the Queens Jubilee, which inspired him to want to learn play the guitar, plus Ed was already playing other musical instruments, so he could have known some chords but fully learnt Layla as his first proper song.
these comments are full of bollocks who think saying great old singers are always better than pops makes them look they have good tastes in song. Ed is a great singer and these fools don't know how much he respects Eric Clapton
And how much Clapton respects him! They're friends afaik and have collaborated twice on records and a couple of times on stage. If Clapton likes him, why would his fans still try to defend him from Ed?
Ermm...he's just strumming chords. It requires no talent at all. Sheeran is busker standard & happens to live in an era where talentlessness is adored.
Karl Anders This wasn't too complicated, true. But he is not "busker standard"... Assuming you know how he uses the loop pedal, watch any of these two and tell me again he's talentless ua-cam.com/video/DV0TJZ7Kp40/v-deo.html www.dailymotion.com/video/x2iynl2_ed-sheeran-performs-bloodstream-brit-awards-2015_music
love Ed's music, very talented & great cover but Clapton lived, drank, was addicted, and lost a lover to 'Layla', it's his song--and to me I like everyone's versions of it but Clapton's are the ones I love best
Lol why? I do like the original better but this is a cover, it's not meant to be better, it's meant to be different. And as far as covering songs goes this is ok, not bad at all (but nowhere near the original).
I’m all for decent covers, but ed Sheeran is seriously misjudged. I’m pretty sure he’s a nice guy and that. But I don’t see any great talent in him at all. As a performer he is quite bland and doesn’t exhibit any particular great skill. And is his songwriting is abysmal. Don’t get me wrong, if I turned up to a jam night at my local pub, and ed was covering this, I’d think it would be a good effort and give an applause. But for god sake. On national television in New Years. Don’t know why anyone would wanna see that.
Quite bland huh? I'm pretty sure that you didn't listen to any of his albums or his live performance. Yes u may say that I'm a fanboy but his song definitely stand out from what nowaday mainstream artist song, and before you wanna say him as a "typical pub singer" U probably should should learn about what he been thought to archive nowaday success.
kang dante, first off, yes he is bland. I am aware of his music and performances. I’ve been aware of his music from the sbtv days and yes I have listened to plus and divide, both over hyped albums. I don’t make my criticisms lightly. I am informed when it comes to his music, to make unbiased honest comments. Also you’re last comment about success does not make sense. I’m not too sure on the point you’re trying to make. Please be more constructive with your writing...

Ed should do a bit of rock music.
My heart just burst. So much talent
hahah are you serious??
Andy McCallum... don’t be so negative jealous guy.
yet how little it takes for your heart to burst
This guy here destroying Clapton's classic and you call it talent?
There's few men in the world with the unspoken bond that Ed and Eric have. And that strat! I will own that strat one day! Music will live on!
Of course nothing can touch Clapton's original but I didn't mind this at all, Ed respects the classics. Horn section was a nice touch too
Clapton didn’t make it originally lol, derek and the dominos did
Even clapton covered it.
@@abrasivegamer3675 Clapton was the lead of Derek and the dominos
@@abrasivegamer3675 Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon wrote it, Clapton and Duane Allman make the chrods, its not a cover.
@@xl1kz Eric wrote it (lyrics and chords), Jim added the piano part and Duane made the main riff
glad to see a modern artist respecting the classics
Timeless
@EdSheeran where has this been hiding??? Love your voice!!
That boy can sing anything and make it sound good. But when you give him gold . He can really show his talent.
One of the best ever songs, regardless of who covers it. I named my daughter after this epic song
Love Jools but this is my favourite song, the band, backers and of course Ed along with the audience absolutely smashed it 👏👏👏
Anything Ed touches turns to gold!!
First time I've seen this vid, amazing..thanks. Ed started playing when he first heard of Clapton and Layla
Solid cover, really added his own spin to it
In every Layla video there’s someone saying that they or they’re daughter was named after the song
my father was named after this song
Interesting... So you where named after the other woman?
I have to own up to that ...it's me
@@Nicky89_ 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
i was named after this song
This sounds like Clapton's 1983 performances of the song. Sheeran did a brilliant job covering this song.
Really, really nice to see Ed performing with a live band again. Also very nice seeing him return to the rock/blues sound that influenced many songs on his older albums. Divide was really lacking in the darker, bluesy songs like Make It Rain, The Man, Don't etc
Brilliant! Best cover of this song that I've ever heard
Not lying ed sheeran's vocals dont fit the song the guitarist is off in many parts and would've been better without the acoustic
OMG yes, why have I not seen this until now
This is what happens when everyone enjoys their part to play. Probably the best cover ever created. Shout outs to the Background Singers and Drummer in Red who sold it hard.
One of the best things I’ve ever seen at 3am, mid sesh! X
He will always be incredible !!
No he won't. In an earlier time he would have been considered sub-average.
One of the greatest songs ever, performed by one of the greatest singers of our time
My wish came true. I was waiting him to sing this song. This song was the reason he started to play the guitar.
Ksenija Jemensek 0
Holy shit same for me!
Then why is he on the rythm guitar, then ?
Andrew Power ....what?

So terrific
I was waiting him to sing this song so long
What a talent
what about you love it!
I mean, he's just playing the rythm. I'm sure anyone could do that.
@@onemakerstudios5854I can't

Just stumbled across this little gem 😀 my day just gotva whole lot better, thanks Ed and Jools for this wonderful cover 😀
Love it!!! Terrific singing!! His voice fits this song perfectly.
wow. love it.
Such a great song to cover
I LOVE THIS SONG
great vocal Ed , you rocked so hard you broke a string at the end , anybody else notice
Ed's outfit is so perfect *-*
Can never beat Eric Clapton, but definitely a fucking good cover
The lady shaking the pineapple at 0.55-57 seconds is my favourite part.
かっこいい、、、
what an amazing drummer there, woww🔥👏🏽
ED singing a clapton song. ❤️🙌 A perfect start to the new year.
bogen broom What?
Hussain Rangadi n. ্তে
this song was written and produced by the band Derek and the Domino's in 1970....
J4CKLIVE The band WAS Eric Clapton
bogen broom haha yeah you Clapton was in that band right?
Wow nice cover ed sheeran 💯👏👏👏👏 amazing voice!!!!!
Left out the best part of the song!
omg... i love this song and i love Ed... it must be a dream! love u Ed, thank you!

Of course..why not? Consummate performer....gotta love Ed!
Oh Boy ! The guy with the guitar.............. LAYLA ! Well done ED . ✨⭐️✨
Mark Flanagan.
#Fact: Its the first song that Ed learned on guitar.
Eugene Crab there's no fucking way lol
Eric Clapton was the inspiration for Ed learning to play the guitar as young boy. They are now good friends and featured on each other latest albums:)
Rafael Garcia He said it straight after this performance
Eugene Crab anyone who knows anything about guitar knows Layla is never the first song you learn on guitar
The Man Called Toyan Ed performed Layla when he was 11 yrs old at some charity event. FINALLY. Now do the Re: Stacks cover. You own us!
A shout out to Mark Flanagan for absolutely nailing that guitar solo- a brilliant bluesman....
That guitar solo was awesome
Literal chills 😍 he’d be living his own dream performing a Clapton song too. Wow
Un crack este pibe, cada vez anda mejor, y de hecho se rodea de los mejores.
I see why this song inspired ed ! ❤️❤️❤️
Saw Glen Tillbrook do this live .awesome doesn’t begin to deceive it
Someone listen to Larry Carlton 's version of Layla : Ed and Jools can shine Larry's shoes.
very very Amazimg cover beautiful💕Ed Sheeran looove😢💕

Very good that.
Awesome version! Ed Sheehan and the Band Rocks!

Picking up a Eric Clapton's song is ain't just tough, it needs real master skill and Ed made it through so nicely. A real musical genius man.

Not a Clapton song, Derek and the domino original
oliver wright You do realize that Clapton wrote that while he was in Derek and the Dominos.
Drummer was feeling it!
Thanx Ed! my life is complete :D
Ed neva fails to deliver...he is fuckin awesome

This is the best thing that has ever happened.

I’m not a fan of Ed but mega respect
The drummer here is awesome 👌
That's Gilson Lavis, Jools' resident drummer. He was 66 when this was performed!
