My wife and I sleep in the back of our 5th gen 4runner also. It be tight but in cold weather it is nice and cozy. We have to move stuff from the back to the front seats but we have that down. In the last year and a half we have spent over 40 nights in the back of the 4runner.
Nice! 40 nights, that's impressive
I can totally relate to your set up Grumpy. I just bought a new Tacoma long bed and put a topper on it. I built a bed platform inside. I really like the idea of being out of the elements and the added security. A ground tent or roof top tent would need to air out and dry out after a rain or snow. And like you mentioned, less time setting up and taking down tents. Also sleeping in my topper, there's no worries of those pesky little critters (mice) who seemed to move right in not long after you set up your ground tent lol. I also have a roof rack/basket on top of my topper and plan utilize that area for gear. 👍
Good job! After many coupes and sedans I just got a 2021 4Runner and a whole new world has opened up to me. I am very interested in car-camping and your video gave me several ideas! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome Chris. Welcome to the car-camping club, I'm sure you'll enjoy it!
Really enjoying your channel and adventures, keep them coming and happy camping!
Thank you, glad you are enjoying my channel and thanks for taking the time to comment!
I love this practical approach and it's free!
I agree with all you said. I sleep in my Toyota FJ all the time. I also have a gazelle but a T3 as im a single person so its big enough for me. But I love to sleep in the FJ. Its no set up time and its cozy. I use the passenger side as my kitchen set up and sometimes will bring a small pop up bathroom tent if needed. Its perfect.
Totally agree. It’s so much convenient and saves you plenty of time. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for taking time to comment.
great vid my dude, very informative and I like your practicality
Thank you Cee.
All valid points! I actually like sleeping in the vehicle as well but now have an RTT. Best quote from the video is the "I'll respond to every comment unless you're a jackass." Love it!
Funny that you commented on my video today, I just watched your 5 snow driving tips video. All 5 tips are good ones (6 if including not listening to your brother).
You're not a jackass, so I responded :-)
Thanks for the video. You just reinforced what we were already thinking. We have a 2 person platform in our 4runner, and love it so far. Now I'm regretting not having the remote start as I'm wanting to camp in winter now. Hmmmm....maybe I'll get some sort of after market, but I'm scared to have people messing with the electrics.
My 4Runner didn't have remote start so I got this and installed it myself:
www.12volt.solutions/products/2010-2018-toyota-4runner-plug-play-remote-start-kit-g-key?_pos=2&_sid=1df66dc78&_ss=r
Was pretty painless to install and unlike the factory remote start, it doesn't turn off the engine when you open a door.
...and I want to get the remote start to fire up the AC at night during the AZ summers!
Best Buy does a great job installing these. They would cover anything that inadvertently went wrong.
I agree, I would most definitely sleep inside. I own a FJ Cruiser so I would be a bit more cramped, but it’s doable. Plus the roof top tent adds a bunch of weight up top. Your set is just perfect.
Thanks Nathan. I love FJ's, but agree it would be more cramped.
Thanks for the video! Coincidentally I have been considering an SUV tent for my Xterra…but since I’m kinda short anyway, I could probably just slide the drivers seat all the way forward and tilt the seat back towards the steering wheel and have plenty of room to comfortably stretch out. That definitely saves me the expense and added time of setting up and breaking down a tent. Thanks again!
I think you'll be happy with sleeping inside your Xterra. Every time I think of moving on to something else, I sleep inside my 4Runner and come to my senses.
Pretty sweet setup man! Might go this route for the first few overland trips just to make sure we're into it before spending a bunch of money on tents and things.
Sounds like a good plan. I'm glad I didn't buy a RTT like I was thinking about before sleeping inside my 4Runner.
Man. Love this setup. You’ve given me some great ideas.
Awesome! Thank you!
I concur 100%. I do this in my Lexus GX and I did it in a Toyota Highlander on a cross country trip.
I sleep inside my 4runner too with somewhat different sleeping configuration since I need to accommodate a dog crate next to my bed. I carry a rifle box with different gear and recovery ladders on a roof. I can still carry my kayak or SUP there. It wouldn't be possible with a roof tent unless something really short and light. Also, sleeping inside is quite stealthy. I can take a nap anywhere where setting up the rood tent would be suspicious.
Got a similar set up I my Lancruiser 200 series. I've got draws in the boot but when I fold the middle seats down and put a fordable ply platform over the top with tri fold mattress. It's great with so many different configurations. Can fold it all up and take middle row passengers. Just like you I love the insulation and security of sleeping I the truck. The twin turbo V8 Diesel will go anywhere in the bush with comfortable sleeping!
Thanks for taking the time to comment Leyland.
I thought about making a folding platform, but I just never have rear passengers and wanted the storage under the platform.
I also sleep in my 4 Runner using a 4 inch air pad. I do not need a platform at all. Thanks for sharing your set up!
You're welcome Rosco. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great video. I put a drawer system in my 4runner and sleep inside. It's a little cramped, but am ok with it. Only drawback is mattress pad. I have a cheapo folding plastic pad and an inflatable backpack mattress that I use. Not very comfortable, but it works.
Thank you, glad you liked the video.
Yes, certainly cramped. A better mattress pad will certainly help you. I love mine.
Great setup. I also sleep inside my 2004 4runner happily. Happy camping! Timmy C Arizona
Thanks for the comment Timmy. Happy camping to you as well.
dope video man thanks i love your 4runner
Thank you!
As a solo hiker/backpacker and love off grid campsites vs the frontline campgrounds, and after extensive research, I got a 2020 LC heritage edition because it has no 3rd row seats. Comfort of RV vs freedom, I think I made right choice. Since I can’t do it myself, I had guys put two platforms. One is for a bed and my solar battery fits under yet I have enough spaces for plastic ens under. Other half, they made a flat bed just to even out the floor and my ICECO refrigerator toward the back. I can sit up during the night if needed and I can use it as 2nd sleeping platform when my husband is with me. I carry an extra sleeping pad from Sea to Summit. Maybe later but I’m not ready to make any drilling or any other permanent work on my LC yet😅
The LC is a great choice! I've thought about going to something a bit bigger like the LC.
Happy Trails!
Nice setup. I always thought rooftop tents are cool but wasn’t sure about the sacrifice on giving up roof space and raising the CG. You settled it for me.
Since I published this video, my wife got a RTT on her truck and while I like it, I still like sleeping in my 4Runner better.
For me there were a few negatives of a RT that sat above giving up the roof space.
1. The weight. Lots tossed up on top gives a weird weight balance.
2. Taking it off when you need to just isn’t that easy.
3. Honestly the price VS practicality just isn’t worth it. Are you really willing to spend a few grand to sleep up on your vehicle compared to just a few hundred to pop up a tent on the ground?
Thinking about doing the same in a Grand Cherokee L. I would just keep my injected molded cooler (non-powered) outside under the awning. Would like to do something low profile to maximize headroom. Could keep other supples on a swing out storage box, or one on the roof of the SUV. Thanks for the video with your setup.
More headroom would be nice, that's the only thing I really struggle with.
Thanks for sharing TGG! What kind of wheel, tire, suspension, lift you got under? Can you make a video on that?
I was planning on doing that at some point. I'll do it soon.
nice setup, some inspiring things on here, thanks!
You're welcome Justin.
make a lot of sense, cool video, thank you for sharing
Great video, thanks for sharing. Tell me more about your window screens? DIY or purchased? I live in the buggy PNW and need some :)
These things are fantastic Pamela, here is the link:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NZSDB5M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My wife and I do the same! I use the leveling app on my iphone to level the 4runner and I have leveling ramps to adjust where needed. I love that the back of the 5th gen is flat with the sliding tray.
I have a Viper alarm remote start, didn’t even think about remote starting and heating the insidem of the cabin with the auto shutoff…great idea!
Remote start works like a charm for sure.
Wow! Great points! Thanks!
Awesome video. I do the same thing for the same reasons. I carry my kayak on the roof so a tent wouldn't work.. I need to build a drawer system yet. Love yours. I'm looking to do the back window switch mod next..
Glad you liked the video Ken. I have been thinking about the switch mod for a long time, but have just not gotten around to it.
Where does one buy the switch kit mod?
Nice video man .... The link in the comment below r some window guards that u could maybe find useful for airflow but protection.
Also rooftop tent will weight down your car more. Sleeping inside you’re already safe from elements, and other things.
Easy to get up and drive in an emergency situation. I would add fuel to the rooftop instead.
I agree…with all your reasons. The only tent I thought about was one that attaches to the rear of the vehicle with the hatch open, possibly allowing for a quick exit to the 4Runner in the event of an emergency. I wonder if a motion detector could be calibrated….
I've looked at those tents, but just like the ease of sleeping inside.
Nice set up..I do the same. Not gonna give up good roof space on my Gobi for a tent. I generally solo camp so inside works for me for the same reasons you mentioned.
Thank you.
I did a rear seat delete, built storage on the passenger, and a vault on the drivers. Plenty of head room to sit up and move around.
I may reconfigure to give myself a bit more headroom, but I just really like the way the drawers are setup.
Thanks for the video, good information!
You're welcome, glad it was useful.
I've got a sleeping platform in my 2000 4Runner and it is way more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, and much dryer than sleeping in a tent in the rain. Rooftop tents also reduce fuel economy pretty drastically, due to the increased drag. The weight that high also raises your center of gravity and can get the vehicle "tippy"...kind of scary on vehicles that are usually already lifted.
I think rooftop tents are a necessity on short wheelbase vehicles like jeeps, and have been somewhat cargo culted onto other vehicles where they make less sense. The truly instant setup of an interior platform - just pull over and you're ready to go - and storm worthiness that outweighs any tent-based setup are really hard to ignore. It does require you to exercise some self-control in terms of what you bring, you can't just stuff the vehicle full to bursting with cargo, which is another reason I think some folks have struggled and ended up bolting on a rooftop tent. But for gas mileage, weight distribution, stealth, convenience, a well-built interior platform is hard to beat.
Totally agree with you. I do struggle with bringing too much stuff and have not found the "right" amount yet, but getting there.
I have anime on both sides. 2 gun rack boxes for storage on rhino racks. Mini vans have so much fun with 2 kids and wife. Weather tech did great on all window instillations
Personally have always driven a small car Subaru wrx park and just hike up hours in logging roads or trails to finally find a spot. Have finally reached a stage in life where I can buy an off road vehicle and start looking into that lifestyle.
Looking to get a 4runner 2021 trail edition.
Do you find that you use the a-trax feature and locking differentials? I live in canada and our logging roads in northern Ontario arent terrible to get up into and I'm not gonna be risking driving through really tough trails anyways. Do you think I can get by with just 4x4 and good tires? Or should I look into the off road trim for the added value.
Excellent setup sleeping in your car like that, the awning and platform bed combo looks like you're camping in style and comfort with very little setup. Is that a generator you use to power your fridge and if so, you mentioned leaving the fridge on all night does the generator noise not keep you up?
Thanks for an awesome video
Hello Kevin, you will certainly be happy with the trail edition 4Runner. I barely use the A-Trak or my locking differential in the summer, but do rely on both in the winter when I'm going through snow.
I power my fridge with a Jacker 500 or 1000. When the vehicle is running, the Jackery is being charged. This system works well for me. Because these are just power stations, they do not make noise at night.
Just came across this informative video. Question.... is the natural rake to a 5th Gen - front being lower than the rear - cause the sleeping area to be non-level? I was thinking of a leveling kit for my new '23, but having acid reflux the angle may actually be advantagous to me if I sleep head toward the rear as opposed to, or in addition to, a purpose built sleeping platform made with an integral angle. Keep up the interesting videos!
Yes, the natural rake is lower in the front. I level mine at camp with rocks to get it the way I like it.
I like your setup! I have the same color 4R.
Well with a name like grumpy gobbler I had to subscribe. I have always thought I would sleep inside my 4Runner. Only had it 3 weeks can't wait to get out and try it.
LOL, thanks for subscribing. Congrats on your 4Runner, hope you enjoy sleeping inside.
I'm at an hard choice. I really like the rtt but like you said having to set them up and ground tents having to set them up. I like that if I go with the inside I can use the roof for storrage. But on the same hand If I have a rtt I could have the entire inside of the car for storrage, but the inside camping is much cheaper and much less to replace if something does go bad.
There's certainly no perfect solution, I still go back and forth on getting a camper, RTT or just use my ground tent.
Nice job!
Do you recall where you purchased mat/mattress? Looks like just what I need this fall!
Thx!

What kind of awning is that? You have a great setup! I just ordered my 2022 4Runner and am super stoked.
Hi Taylor, congrats on your new 4Runner. Hopefully it won't too long to take delivery.
My awning is an OVS 180 (Overland Vehicle Systems)

Good Stuff soo many people are doing the car camping thing now and for so long i thought i needed an rv but now .......i am sooooo onboard! Trying to figure sleeping arrangment with husband 6'4" and me 5'10" and our toddler ....we are gonna look like a clown car in our sie na minivan but Im determined to go (non tent) camping this year on a budget! Subscribed thx for the great video!
Your "clown car' comment actually made me laugh out loud. Glad you're going to give it a go, will be worth it! Thanks for subscribing.
Hey Noah, thanks for the video. When you bought your Weathertech window liners, were they made specifically for the 4Runners? I checked out the website and didn't see anything specific to the 4Runner. Thanks partner!
Hi Kirk, Here is the link, I got the full vehicle kit:

@@TheGrumpyGobbler Thanks, I got them!
nice, what are the dimensions with the second row down?
Awesome vid. What model jackery do you have? And what fridge is that?
Thank you!
I have both the 500 and 1000 Jackery's. I tend to use the 500 in winter and the 1000 in summer.
The fridge is a Aspenora (think it's a Chinese knock-off). It actually works really well, but they are not available anymore. I am now trying out the RV45D by SetPower because it has a freezer. I only have 1 trip on it so far.
4Runners are probably my favorite vehicle but the low payload numbers will keep me from buying another one in the future. Probably going with a used Frontier with a bed topper. Great video and I had the slide deck in my old 4Runner and would just throw a mat in the back and grab my sleeping bag when I went camping.
Thanks for sharing. I’m getting ready for my first night in my 4Runner. I just have a sleeping bag. Not planning on a full bed platform for now, just the bare minimum to be able to sleep in the truck. Do you know if there are custom made plate to level the trunk flooring?
Hello. Goose Gear makes a platform for the 4Runner, but it's not cheap. Wouldn't be hard to make a simple small platform just for the lower part of the floor.
Enjoy your first night, hope it works well for you.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler thanks. It requires removal of some parts off the truck for install. I’m looking for a simple pre made plate, just don’t want to do it myself.
Where did you get your window screens?
My decades if backpacking snd sleep tenting ate over!
Im considering a 4runner to downsize from my Pleasureway RV. Wondering how low you bed platform is and if that’s a pull out? I want only about a 4” drawer to slide.
The only thing that pulls out is the fridge slide. The platform is about 7 or 8 inches high, I'm thinking about redoing it again because I want more headroom.
thanks for the video. i checked your list of links to things you use (very helpful btw), but i didn't see a link for what kind of refrigerator/cooler that you use. i like the one you use because it looks like a good size and isn't too tall. thanks in advance :-)
Hello, the refrigerator I have is not available anymore, but here is the link to it so you can get the dimensions:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085VV4C9W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The reason I got this one was exactly because it wasn't too tall.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler thank you so much for the info
Hi there. Great video, thanks for posting. Can you please let me know what awning you are using? It really looks like it creates a big shady spot. Thanks. -Bill
I am using the OVS 180. It's fantastic!
About to join the 4runner gang with a 2017 TRD! Was wondering if you remember how much money you spent on your setup, (excluding purchase price of the vehicle.) Would be helpful to know, thanks!
For everything besides the vehicle itself, I would guess a little over 10K. I don't know for sure because I don't want to know (ignorance is bliss they say).
I like your setup. I have something similar in a 2 door jeep.
Thank you Joe.
Can you send the link for the weather tech sun reflectors in the rear window, Or the model number and where I can get them? Thanks!
Here they are:
www.weathertech.com/toyota/2016/4runner/sunshade/
I got the full kit.
I do a lot of car camping too! Where did you get those mesh window covers?
I got them on Amazon, here's the link:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07NZSDB5M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I saw some pictures last summer taken by a Ranger of an SUV parked outside in Steamboat. The back windows had been 'grabbed' by a bear and popped right open (shattered). There was some kind of food that the bear really wanted - ignored the dog food. I have a similar set up for inside sleeping but don't have remote start on my ORP- I will look in to remote start. Great videos- thanks-
That is why I am always armed when I camp...you never know.
I got my remote start from 12 Volt Solutions. Works perfectly and easy to install.
Did you cut the window shades for the rear quarter windows or are they a purchasable product?
I bought a kit from WeatherTech that has shades for every window.

Does that shovel scratch the paint with the way it's mounted? Looks like the tip is very close to the roof panel.
It does not, the shovel does not move at all and is about an inch from the paint. I was concerned about it, but the mount it totally sturdy.
what would be your setup for a family of 4 (2 + 2) ? appreciate your thoughts into this matter. I do not like RTTs.
Hello Anil, If I had to do something for a family of 4, I would build out a van. You could make cabinets that convert to beds.
I've thought about building a van so my wife, dog and myself could sleep inside a vehicle (I don't like RTT's either). I would rather build something than purchase something pre-made, so I could make it the way I wanted.
Makes sense to me. I like the screens for the windows. Love the awning too. If I was setting my 4RUNNER for camping I would have the bed on the passenger side with my fridge on the driver's side. I think then a person could recline the drivers seat for sleeping and a spouse could use the bed. I haven't proven that concept but that is my idea.
Valid point. I could go the other way and sleep in the passenger seat and my wife could sleep in the bed...this way, the steering wheel is not in the way.
Thank you for posting this. Looking at the new 2023 4Runner or the TRD Off Road Rav4 and like that you can sleep inside this vehicle. Might be pretty cramped in the Rav4.. HAve you seen the Rav4 TRD? What are your thoughts? Now following 884!
Hello and thank you for taking the time to comment.
I have not seen the Rav4 TRD. Having seen a regular Rav4, I do think it would be a bit cramped inside. Even the 4Runner is a bit small and I have been thinking about getting something bigger.
Thanks for subscribing
@@TheGrumpyGobbler Anytime my friend! Always looking to support others that love the outdoors. I am just concerned with fuel economy and gas prices. The new 2023 4Runner prototypes are very tempting. @@MetroOnTheMove I'll take a look at your channel this evening. Always looking for new channels to follow
I’m considering a 2024 4-Runner and would also like the simplicity of sleeping inside. What is the benefit of a sleeping platform? Is the 4-runner bed not flat enough for an inflatable mattress pad and sleeping bag?
In my 4Runner there is a hump, so a mattress would be uncomfortable. I also wanted storage and drawers.
What's ur set up at the trunk and inside ur suv? I want to know what gears u got. What's ur set up for the top? I like it and I want to do that to mine. Also, what mattress is that? What if I want to travel with someone else? Thanks in advance.
Here is a link to the mattress:

At this point, I couldn't have anyone else sleep inside with me. If the platform was all on one level, I could remove the fridge and then someone else could.
I have a full walk around of my 4Runner here:
ua-cam.com/video/UnvdUGlh_Bg/v-deo.html
All sounds good to me!
Nice video man ! I totally agree with your opinions. I have a question. How warm is 4runner during the winter times without heating ? How does it keeps its warmth ? For instance german cars like audi or benz keeps its warmth really good. What about 4runners ? Your answer will be my decision so please answer me. Thank you :)
The 4Runner does OK keeping the heat in, but I do use reflective shades on all the windows when it's really cold. Also, the heat from the fridge helps. It will get below freezing, but I have a -20 degree sleeping bag and am comfortable.
Hope this helps
Can also add reflected shield around when going to bed. Some on the inside roof to reflect heat back.
How cold can it be for the fridge to heat the inside of 4runner?
Would you consider it worth it to set up remote switches for your windows so you can activate them while sleeping?
Don't think I would need remote switches. I remote start the 4Runner, and then I can access all the back windows easily.
I’m currently sleeping in the back of my 4Runner. I cannot open the back hatch so I struggle to get out a side door. I’m about to solve that with a switch kit mod. I’ve also found it extremely difficult to get into the front seat from the back. Perhaps impossible if the front passenger seat is full of gear, which it usually is. I’m going to have to check out more of your videos to see how you’ve addressed these issues. Thank you for an interesting video.
My front passenger seat is usually full of gear as well. I am not that flexible, but I get out of the side door ok. I have thought about getting the switch kit mod, but have not done it yet.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler Where does one buy the switch kit mod?
@@bluenetmarketing There are several places to get one. I have not installed one yet, so I can't recommend one. Do a search for 4Runner hatch switch mod and you'll see some pre-made kits.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler Thank you!
Hi! At 5:50 in the video.. I see a good visual of your 180 awning set up with your rear hatch open. Is your rear hatch opened up all the way there before/or while touching the support bar of the awning? How is that? It looks fin, I'm wondering if it bothers you at all. I ask because I have a 270 and can't open up my rear hatch all the way when the awning is fully deployed. Thanks!
Hello! The awning support does stop the hatch from opening completely, but not by much. It does not bother me. When mounting the awning, it should be mounted as high up as possible. Because of my Gobi rack, I can mount the awning higher than some other rack options.
Hope this helps.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler it sure does! Love it. Thanks so much!
Can you show us how your awning opens and closes, and where you bought it from? I like that it covers more than the average awning. Thanks!
Hello Julie, you can see me deploying the awning at about 4:35 into this video: ua-cam.com/video/RFsvufx5pcU/v-deo.html
Hello, nice set up! Do you have a factory toyota remote start? Thanks
I do not have the factory remote start, I have a plug and play system from 12volt Solutions. With the factory one, the vehicle turns off when you open a door, mine does not.

@@TheGrumpyGobbler Thanks for the video, very informative, liked & subbed! I miss the Colorado mountains. Did you get the medium screens? Yes, I got the medium screens.
My mattress is a little tight, but not too bad. I had no real choice as that was the biggest one that would fit. I removed my entire 2nd row seats to build a sleeping platform. Video on what I did here: ua-cam.com/video/v7xVu8BDXo0/v-deo.html
If you decide to camp inside your 4Runner, you may find it a bit tight at first, but you'll get used to it. I love it.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler Thanks Noah for your response and the link to your drawer/platform build. Very nice!
How would I block hatch release so dash light isnt on?
I have a 2020 ORP.
I do not know as I just let the light stay on.
Hey sir, did you DIY your platform and drawers or did you buy it or have it commissioned
Hi James, I built it myself without any plans besides what was in my head.
@thegrumpygobbler which trash bag do you have mounted on the ladder?
It's this bag that I got on Amazon. Be aware that it is only less than 6 months old and it was black when I got it, so it fades really quickly.

I used to camp out a lot as a kid. The army changed that for me though. Too many nights on the ground and no tent. Just started throwing the sleeping bag in the back of a truck. So let get this straight with the car doors locked and windows up all the way a bear (black is all we have in the east) could rip the door open?
I am aware that a bear could possibly get in, but I am always armed and prepared to defend myself.
I heard about the bicyclist and bear too. I just got a 2022 T4R OR-P (45th b-day present to myself) and have always wanted to sleep inside. Couldn’t tell so far if you pulled the lower seat cushion. Not sure if there is enough space for me 5’10”.
How was it starting a YT channel?
Hello Justin, Yes, I removed the lower seat cushions. Even when I had them in, I fit pretty well (I'm 5'9"). You will need to move the front seats up.
I actually started my UA-cam channel several years ago, but didn't do anything with it. It's really only the last year or so that I have taken it more seriously. It is certainly easy to start a YT channel, the hardest part is editing (maybe not hard, but certainly time consuming). I do enjoy it and if nothing else, I have a video record of my camping trips.
Happy Birthday bye the way.
I've got a smaller suv... tucson... any tip for a 2 person setup?
Do you think you could fit an inflatable mattress in the back?
If I didn't have the fridge in the back and made the platform all flat, my wife and I could be pretty comfortable.
Noah, did you produce a detailed video of your platform build? Did you do a rear seat delete? It would be nice to see all of the details. I know this video is a couple of years old now. I did the full rear seat delete in my 2019 4R TRD O.R. and have a 72" cargo bed platform. There is also 84" of space when the front seats are moved forward. Long time subscriber. Thanks for sharing! 😁👍
I see you found the build video. Thanks for being a long time subscriber Daniel.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler Noah, sorry I missed it earlier. When I found it I immediately remembered it and saw that I had already given it a thumbs up. Maybe something to do with old age and memory. All is well... Thanks! 😁👍
@@danielstover3029 Believe me, I understand old age/memory issues 😃
@@TheGrumpyGobbler Noah, what is your email address?

Great video,.
Thank you!
Do you use the power outlet in the back of the 4Runner? How do you prevent the car battery from running to low? Thanks!
I have a Jackery that I plug into the power outlet that charges as I drive. My fridge it plugged into the Jackery, so my battery does not drain.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler Thank you, I appreciate it!
Don’t know if anyone has mentioned it yet but have you thought about installing a drawer system and sleeping on top of that?
Already built my own:

Roof top tents are expensive and heavy. I go overlanding in my Mazda CX-5. I just put the backseats down and put sleeping pads. Me and my wife fit pretty good. I got a roof box and hitch bike rack. We're good to go.
I am looking at options and the one piece that no one shows is getting in/out of their vehicle. I assume everyone crawls out the side doors.
Another item is window control. Windows can only be operated while the key is in an ON position.
I do crawl in through the side, guess I could have shown that.
I have remote start, so I can control the windows if I start it.
Question. Lets say you would sleep in the south or somewhere where is extreme humid and hot. Can you run your car all night or does it cut off. Im looking for a 4Runner tk purchase because i have work to do and travel for 3 weeks at a time and was wondering if the car can run all night with AC on. The winter is ok because i can put more blankets and etc. Just wanted to hear your take on it. Do you have solar? How do you keep refrigerator working, is it plugged in to the inverter or to the car 12 volt cigarette lighter socket? The hotels hit crazy expensive so looking for alternatives. Any input is appreciated sir
I probably wouldn't run a motor idling all night, not good for the motor (I don't know why). I don't know what would be a solution for dealing with heat as it does not get that hot where I camp. I do have bug screens and can keep all the windows down all night. Sorry I can't help with a solution.
I keep the refrigerator running with a Jackery 500 or 1000.
@@TheGrumpyGobbler how do charge the jackery ? Do you have solar? Interesting take on the idling on night, I will have to look into why it's not good for motor to be idling. Thanks for your input!
@@1laimmiss I do have solar that I use on multi-day trips, but for the most part I charge the Jackery at home before going out.
Can you point me the direction where I can find those insulated window panel covers please

@@TheGrumpyGobbler thanks!!
If you don’t mind me asking, how tall are you? I’m wanting to convert a 4Runner into a full time camper, but wasn’t sure if I would have enough space to sleep in the back. Thanks!
I'm 5'9"
Just need space for two I’m sold nice thx sharing
That's my kinda set-up! 👍
When camping alone, do you get any bad folks steeling or bothering you? I don't carry yet but will soon and have not done any camping alone. BYW. TY for all of your responses on comments. I think I may just do what you did and start exploring.
I have never had any bad encounters with anyone while out camping, not even any strange encounters.
That being said, there's always a first time and that is mostly why I carry when I camp.
I'd say go for getting out there and start exploring and have a blast!
For protection, sleeping inside the vehicle is the only option. Critters that can get you on the ground can climb ladders. Then there's the whole thing about needing to take a leak in the middle of the night. At least from the vehicle, if you stumble out, it's not that far. :))
4runner or Tacoma DCSB with a topper for a dude who likes camping, fly fishing, and rolls with a large dog? I want to downsize from my tundra and I can't decide on how to go. I like trucks because I can keep wet/fishy/trash big/etc in the bed. However, I can resolve a lot of those issues with bags and stuff but it will ultimately trash the inside of an suv in the long term. However, I can sleep in the 4runner. It's a tough choice. I love the tundra but it is so damn big and even though you're "king of the road" it doesn't give me any confidence in tight trails and city streets and garages.
I still, to this day, think about getting a truck with a topper, but I just like being able to remote start to get heat in the winter as well as the security of having most of my stuff inside. You could do a Trasharoo or some sort of trash bag on the outside for the fishy stuff.
Did you take out the second row seats or just the bottoms of the seats?
Yes, I took out the entire second row.
