The pacific northwestern coast from Alaska to northern california redwoods is filled with towns like this. I live in one. #emeraldtriangle #humboldtcountycalifornia #giantredwoods.
Yay, I feel so lucky! If all on the list, the only one I’ve been to is number one, Bar Harbor Maine. It really is everything he says. When I was there in the early 2000’s, McDonalds had lobster wraps on their menu. LOBSTER! that blew my mind.
Remember guys, it is most often the case that any property on or close to water is going to be more expensive. There are exceptions of course around inland lakes, etc.
If you have Google Earth with street view you can go around all these Villages and look at the houses and stores and things just like you're driving down the street.
The islands you saw in North Carolina are the Outer Banks. If you look at a map of North Carolina, there's the Outer Banks Sound, which is the first body of water you come to when driving to the ocean.. After you cross the Sound, you come to the Outer Banks, a group of islands connected by bridges to the mainland. The Sound is fed by both tributaries and the ocean, so is both fresh water and salt water. And $408,000 is pretty high for most of NC, but the coastal areas are where rich folks live. The closer you get to the ocean, the more expensive it is to live.
Do you live in NC? The Outer Banks are north of Southport and they basically stop before you get to New Bern, where the land takes a sharp curve in. There are still islands, but its not part of the Outer Banks. The main island off Southport is Bald Head. The median home price in the entire state of NC is just under 400K, so for a house in a nice beach town, this is not a bad price. Houses in Raleigh and Charlotte are going for much more than this, on average, and no beach. Its also much easier to get to places like Southport and Wrightsville Beach than the Outer Banks. It is such a pain to get to the Outer Banks, but it is beautiful. Even if you're coming from up north, the Outer Banks is such a pain to get to. If you've never been to Wilmington and you'd like a little more fun on your vacay, maybe look into that one year (its right there with Wrightsville Beach). I went to college there and it is such a great place. There is tons of nightlife, tons of beaches because you also have Carolina Beach there. You can take a trip to Carolina Beach, hit the aquarium and then take the ferry down to Southport.
The south has the best seaside towns because you can be in the water most of the year. If you are going to live near the water but don't have the temperature conducive to bring in the water for more months than not, then what is the point?
Waterfront property is pretty expensive no matter where it is here, except for swamps. If it's even slightly pretty or picturesque, it's going to be more expensive than other houses that aren't by water. Generally, oceanfront is more expensive than lakefront, but there are plenty of exceptions to that rule too - see Lake Tahoe for example, and areas around the Great Lakes. I saved over a hundred grand on my house just by buying one that was fifteen minutes away from the ocean instead of one that was in one of the coast towns. I can still be at the ocean in just a few minutes, but it's worth it to me to save the money - plus I live in a rainforest area with creeks and waterfalls, so it's not like I'm suffering for a nice view.
Idaho here, it was nice to see you pause on the views of our nature. It goes overlooked by most Americans so it was cool to see you enjoy it all the way in Algeria :)
I live in South Port, NC - the waterfront is the inter coastal waterway- in which is part of the ocean. Would love to have you guys over for a visit. God Bless. 🙏🏼
You should check out Astoria, oregon that's where they filmed the movie The goonies. Also near to Atoria is long beach ( beautiful beach town) & seaside (also cute little beach town)
Critical to today's local population in so many small tourist-driven waters-edge towns is creating affordable housing for local workers and keeping properties for year-round residents.
Many States have beautiful lakes (I live in Colorado) and the homes are more affordable. Homes are always more expensive right on the oceanfront and closer to employment and ammenities. Vacation or retirement homes on a lake (people working from home) can cost less! Salaries are decent enough to buy a $400-500,000 home for the average (not rich) people I know.
About that 20K calorie hamburger. In a lot of touristy towns some restaurants will have a stunt option on the menu It's an eating challenge. Sometimes it's a huge steak or burger or some large quantity of something. If you can finish it it's free a lot of times
Gig Harbor, Washington is really an expensive area. Sandpoint, Idaho is a pretty place. That whole upper part of Idaho is beautiful. It's also growing, rapidly. Some of the most enchanting towns are in Nova Scotia, Canada. Amazing seaside towns.
To correct him. Cadillac Mountain is not the highest point on the east coast. But, while at the top during sunrise, it is high enough and far east enough, that it's the first point on the eastern seaboard that sees the sun rise.
The prices they list are usually historical homes near the water. The prices drop rapidly the farther our you go. We bought 300 acres in rural Maine for about the same price as we paid for a townhouse in Raleigh, North Carolina. Our property is 15 Minutes away from Moosehead Lake in the central highlands area. That is the largest lake on the east coast.
I have actually been to beautiful waterside towns. Wonderful places. Not something I'd ever say in a public space but: I prefer the colors of those waterside towns over the drab desert.
I live in a very small town with only 3,000 residents, we have six connecting lakes and surrounded by several others, a campground, festivals every year. About 30 minutes from a city to do shopping on a greater scale. Here you can get a lake front home for around 50 tp 75 thousand dollars. Usually large lots with lots of water frontage. Laid back and peaceful. All I ever see on youtube are channels that show you mostly some of the most expensive properties that the average working class could never afford.. So don't be fooled by these videos, this is NOT what I would consider average water front homes for blue color working Americans.. Far from It.
People usually say Port Townsend is on the Olympic peninsula, rather than the smaller Quimper peninsula off of Olympic Peninsula. Yes people often get a bank loan to buy a boat, they’re for recreation, not transportation. The road is that black because it’s paved with asphalt, not concrete and it looks like they recently refinished it. Cars are shiny because most people take care of them as well as their houses because both are significant investments. Houses with a water view or easy water access are generally more expensive than those without, in the same area. I drive over the Narrows Bridges all the time, the speed limit is 60 mph and usually people are going a little faster, so I have no idea what he’s talking about. What’s in the background of the picture of Sand Point Idaho are mountains with snow on the upper elevations.
Beaufort, SC is where they filmed the Vietnam Scenes in Forest Gump. The majority of the movie was filmed in Savannah, Ga where I was living at the time and Beaufort is only about 45 minutes away from Savannah
I absolutely never heard this, but it makes sense. Did you know they filmed Cold Mountain in Transylvania? Modern NC wouldn't allow for the isolation needed for that time period.
Southport, NC is absolutely beautiful. I went to college very close by and I have friends there. One of my best friends got married at a country club on the beach in Southport, you've never seen such a beautiful spot! Of course, most of the south eastern coastline is beautiful. I haven't seen much of the north east coastline, but I really like the idea of warm beaches and not cold ones. You can almost always swim in Miami, you can not always swim in Maine. Southport's average home price isn't that high, especially because its the beach. Average home prices in most of the nicer cities in NC are around that much. It's also not just on the Atlantic, it's also on the mouth of the Cape Fear river. They didn't get the shipping commerce because that all ended up in Wilmington, which is on the north side of the river. But not all the water will look beachside like you're used to seeing. All along the east coast there are tributaries running out, swampy bits, canals, intercoastal waterways and so on. Its pretty cool to live off the canals and waterways. When I was a kid in FL, we lived near Cape Canaveral and I remember a couple of friends living along a waterway and we would just use a little row boat to go back and forth between houses.
That really black road in Beaufort, SC is just freshly laid asphalt. Asphalt is what the Brits call Tarmack. It's essentially thick crude oil, aka Tar mixed with an agragate rock of some sort. Over time, the tar settles and whatever color the agragate is will come thru on the surface. That road will probably turn gray in a matter of a year or so.
I grew up in Tacoma which is on 1 side of the Narrows bridge and Gig Harbor is on the other side.
