Hi. Good video on DIY. I just bought a used an E39 driver door handle bracket like yours but i need to swop out just the lock with my original one so i can still use my own keys. Any suggestions how to change it without breaking the bracket?

yes, you can swap out the lock cylinders, you will need a small punch and a small hammer to push the pin out, then the lock falls out the bracket.

Artistry Photography Thanks for your reply. After knocking the pins out how do you secure it? Can those pins be reused?

yes you can re use them if you didn't damage them during removal.

Artistry Photography Ok thanks. I will be working on this project in the next few days and I am hoping it is only a broken cable which will be easy to replace not even worry about Swopping out locks.

Is it possible to remove the entire assembly without unhooking the interior and exterior cables, take it out as a unit after removing the door pull to access the two #20 torx screws underneath the exterior door handle. Just take it out as one unit. don't detach any of the cables?

I din't try. I had to replace the lock cylinder on my '99 E39 wagon. The most aggravating part was removing the door panel from the center clip on the door; very stubborn clip but it finally gave in without damage. I followed the directions in the Bentley manual, they recommend removing the door latch first then the lock cylinder and installing in reverse order. It goes fairly well. I had trouble getting the door handle out of it's opening because of folded over insulation on it.
Also, the tip on the end of the Bowden cable has a 2.5 mm hex hole in it, it facilitates removal and installation.

Hi. After removing my old door handle bracket it was what I expected, it was a only a broken cable so I never needed to swap out the locks and I was able to just use my old bracket. But the weirdest thing is now happening. Not sure if I had to disconnect the battery before unplugging and replugging the lock actuator but now when I close the doors all the windows randomly (open) roll down for no reason. I tried to disconnect the battery hoping it would reset itself but no luck. Is there something I did wrong?

Sounds like the lock is in the open position, If you hold the key in the unlock position after the doors have unlocked, it will open the windows and sunroof. Likewise if you hold in lock position the windows will close and the sun roof. check the wire connections and the positioning of the lock cylinder

Artistry Photography I understand the key positions and that also works that same way with the remote key but this issue is happening on it's own. Randomly when I just close the drivers door without locking it the windows all of a sudden decide to roll down for no reason. I will have take a look at the actuator again and see if all the wires are all plugged in. All the plugs should go in only one way so i don't think i could of messed that up. Thanks for your reply.
