I had the same problem with the fuel lines. It started to spill fuel and oil into the water when I took the engine out for a run in the river. I pulled the cover and found that the yellow fuel line was disconnected. I reconnected it with super glue and reinforced it with plasticine, only to have it melt off on a hot day out in the river. When I tried to reconnect it a second time the whole cork popped into the tank and I needed to get towed back to the marina. Listen to this man! Change the fuel lines. Great job with the vids, keep them coming.

Hello I have that motor no issues Gee no oil in lower unit and gas line got to go look. I had a raft like yours made a 1/4"plywood floor with hose around the out side of it to keep from making holes. Put the floor in then pump up the raft it works real good
Black line was off and NO oil in lower unit.Gee no oil in lower unit NO DAMAGE but will put oil in it PDQ. WoW little motor ran good the 7 times I used it. Just the last time out motor was cutting out and leaking gas. gas line must have been lose and came off when I pulled cover off?. My 14 foot John boat gets 6 mph at full speed with 2 of us and gear in it. Cant get it to go TROLLING speed just to fast for that. I really want to troll got a plan for that. Drift Sock Sea Anchor will slow it down. and have 2 Cannon Mini-Troll Down Riggers use MAGNUM Dipsy Diver for the lead ball. Down and out should get me fish. Next year
They ship them with no oil in the lower because it could leak out while sitting sideways and make a mess in the box... also US customs doesn’t allow hazardous materials in the box ie oil...
Thanks for the great series of in-depth videos. These motors have a bad reputation, but you have confirmed that they just need a little extra care from a mechanically-minded man. I imagine many of the bad reviews result from people running them full-out new out of the box without gear oil and full of ethanol...

Thanks for taking the time to comment. When considering this motor, I too saw the negative reviews but was able to read between the lines and in researching the product learned where people went wrong. So I gave it a try and have been very happy with it. I've got a couple of items to report on and hope to update the status of my adventure soon. Nothing major, just continuing the story of my adventure.
They are a pretty neat setup. The manufactures just fell a little short on R&D and QC.. For instance, I think they surge and jump because of 2 reasons and a big one is crap fuel lines. The other reason I think is the carburator gets hot and the fuel vaporizes. They are not really water cooled. The water cools the exhaust only which only pulls a little heat from the cylinder head which will keep it from seizing up. I think a modification using a copper tube stealing some of the cooling water touching or near the carb will keep it cool enough that it won't jump.. The clutch is a simple fix they used but the clutch they used is not rated for the duty they require of them. They are string trimmer clutches. designed to spin a plastic string with virtually no load on it. A prop is a very large load... The bad really is they are the ONLY 1.5hp ( really not 3.5/6 hp ) outboard available in current market, so with cheap inflatables, it's either Hangkai or electric

l'm debating with this option vs. a trolling motor for a 14' canoe ( w/ transom) . The noise is gonna be the main factor.
@@BlueOriginAire you would have a better time, with 2 batteries and a 30# trolling motor in a canoe. It won't take much to move it... I smoked the clutch on my Hangkai with about 4 hours run time and never bothered to fix it, although I still have and it still runs. They are too loud IMO, but it got me out on the water in my $100 inflatable last year.

Dan, the cool thing about you is, your point out what to do, like changing the fuel line firsthand, replace the spark plug, bee wax the pull cord, lubing the gearbox in the foot. With these cross tha pond engines, it's the little things that are over looked. People complain about these engines, saying they're junk and they're cheap, but lets be honest here, $300 for a gas outboard isn't gonna be top of the line.
With a 1.6 hp engine, it'll get you where you're going and back, but NOT in a hurry...

That’s what my goal was. I just documented what I was going through. I had watched videos and tried to learn from them. A good example was the cords breaking. I recalled as a child my Grandad (Grandpa in today’s lingo) showed me how a cord will last longer with a little bees wax! He was a great guy who to me pond fishing every summer. Only used cain poles 😂

The air filter with the motor is fine. I never replaced it. Being on the water there’s less dust. So you are good the way it is. 👍👍

Thanks for the well thought out and informative video. I'm buying one of these for the same reasons you did and for the exact same boat. I will upgrade the fuel lines and prop before the first run thanks to this video. Have fun and keep up the post. Did the aluminum prop make a difference other than durability?
I'm not sure if the prop made any difference... Just stronger feeling. I have touched bottom a couple of times in a sandy gritty area and it did fine. I went out this morning with a nephew and the motor continues to run smoother with age. I will mention that I think I might have liked the excursion 5 better for a little more room.... Just a thought to consider. In one video I show a bag that I purchased via Amazon. It has worked out great, and it might hold the larger raft aw well. It has plenty of extra room. I just fold the raft in half, then roll it up and it fits with plenty of room to spare! Have fun with your experience.
super review videos on this motor..the one thing they have convinced me to do is to never buy this piece of junk..i will just save up my money and get me a yamaha or suzuki 2.5 or 3.5..thanks again...

No offense was taken… I’m glad to hear that it helped in your decision making. I just hit 70 and switched to wooden model ship building! Lugging the raft and motor became too much!

dear sir you already have the wood floor bolt down a steel transom to the floor it will go a lot better the motor mount is not solid enough , you have overcome some complications but push down on the boat when inflated it will bounce back your motor is doing the same thing , you can buy steel shelving brackets the rest will fall into place. good luck to you mine moves pretty good

I did find these to fit, but they were tight. I also purchased line at a local Lawnmower repair shop by taking a piece of the old one with me. But it also was a tighter fit. But all worked ok.

I have a seahorse 3.5 which looks to be very similar to your motor (aside from the top cap). The engine seems to be running fine but 2 minutes or so into running, the prop will stop spinning and I get only bubbles being discharged from the lower unit. I need some help troubleshooting please
The motor I have has a clutch that controls the propeller. It is a spring loaded mechanism that as the motor accelerates it spins, it opens creating a seal that then catches the propeller system making it turn. That's how at an idle, the spring pulls it back in so it free wheels and the prop stops turning. The material used wears out over time and has to be replaced. Yep Dan's right I think its your clutch. If you here a higher pitch whirring sound at full throttle its starting to wear.

But I ended up going to a lawnmower repair place and took the original fuel line with me. They seem to hold up better however the Amazon ones worked too, just replace them each season (or once a year).
I also purchased the spark plug from Amazon and here’s a link to that as well. The gap is pre-set so it’s an easy switch out!

Also sorry to bother you but did you get a chance to test the fish finder? Would be interesting to. Compare to mine. LOL. As not even the depth is Accurate. But that is what you get from a cheap one though.
Not yet. I was going to a small lake but got rained out. Using it in a strong current didn't seem like the best way to test it.
I will definitely get out and try it at some point.

I’d recommend measuring across where the floor is inflated, but leave room for the foam pipe insulation to protect the raft. As I recall flipping the raft over allowed a good pattern for the floor, but I ended trimming some off for the foam protectors.

I think it would work much better on the fiberglass boat! I lost a lot of thrust because of the sponginess of the inflatable boat. One area to mention is that the exhaust is at the bottom of the shaft below the waterline. So it’s not very good for trolling! But it’ll get you from point A to point B!
I think if I had it to do ever again I’d give more consideration to the 4 stroke as it has a muffler!😂

I think you would get more speed if you raised the motor up (see jackplate). when I run my boat full throttle just the lower part of the outboard is in the water (prop & water intake for cooling).
Totally agree, but with the raft being air filled it tends to flex when the motor is accelerated. Best I can think of is making something that absorbs the thrust onto the plywood floor.... But that adds more stuff to set up... I'm resolved to just going slow... Thanks for your input.
Where would a person find parts for repair? Especially the spark plug and Carburetor.
I’ve found clutch. Others have said it matches up with other similar motors. I think the carb would be easy. It’s a standard spark plug. But it’s something to consider in buying one or not. Thanks for watching!

So it's 30.1 on the 2 stroke oil for break it in, because I've only been able to find 32.1 oil?
The actual manufacturer website says break in is listed as:

After the run-in fuel and oil volume ratio of 50: 1 .
If you’re buying pre-mixed fuel you won’t find it.
You’ll need to buy the oil separate from the fuel and mix it yourself.

I am new owner of 10.5 ft inflatable dingy. I will buy one outboard 3-4 hp with limited budget. Which will be preferable-- 2 stroke or 4 stroke ? Some people says that 2 stroke a bit noisy. May I have your suggestion?

Is this out boar actually a 3.6hp or is it a bit smaller engine because I know with the strimmer ones they they they are a certion size but they are smaller I was wondering if it is the same with this
I’m not sure. I tried to look it up using a formula I found online…. But several viewers explained that the formula wasn’t accurate…. It’s definitely a small simple design motor…. But for the price, I was happy with it…. It’s not without issues, but keeping an eye out and doing simple maintenance stuff, I think the engine block itself is fine… the add on stuff needs regular attention!

Have you figured out where the cooling water pump impeller goes?
Yes, it’s at the bottom of the shaft going to the propeller. It’s just a simple paddle wheel. Not much to it. Only thing that could go wrong is if the paddle broke off. No internal moving parts.

It would probably do a lot better on something like a small Jon boat, about a 12 ft size would be a good size, those inflatable boats have a lot of drag in the water.

I would give serious consideration for the 4 stroke! At the time, I learned that if you lay the 4 stroke on it’s side, oil can flow into the cylinder and fowl the spark plug. Two stoke that won’t happen. But I’ve since learned that laying it one the other side would be okay..... So I’m actually considering getting a 4 stroke and trying it out! Maybe next season? So the short answer is yes, if you have the little extra cash, I’d get the 4 stroke. If I ever get one I’ll document it on video too.😉

I recently went to a lawn mower repair shop and took in the original equipment lines. They suggested the return line to buy is 3mm X 6mm. I put it on, it fit fine but the outer diameter 6mm was pretty tight getting it into the fuel tank through the rubber grommet. But it did fit and is thicker than the original. The incoming fuel supply line is 3mm X 5mm. I purchased it too but have not installed it as the original equipment (black hose) is in good shape.

Hi, I made my first exit with the new engine today, I followed all your advice even from the previous videos, I encountered a problem with the engine: in its first ignition, as a new engine, I could not keep it on idling, it always turns off, what should I do? The engine does not stay in neutral, it turns off and I have always been forced to keep it slightly accelerated otherwise it turns off !! Thank you
I’m not completely sure? But here’s a couple of thoughts. It could be that the oil rich fuel mixture is causing it somewhat? So maybe after you have finished the break in it’ll improve?
However, you can adjust the engine with the screws at the carburetor.
Sorry, I can’t explain how, but if you google or search idle adjustment for small motors I think you’ll find something on UA-cam.
The carburetor on this is used on trimmers too.
Here’s a sample video that explains how to adjust the carburetor….
You only need to adjust the low setting, but watch the entire video. Then start your motor and just turn that adjusting screw a little bit to bring your idle speed up a bit.

Choke is only needed when engine is cold, or not been run for a long time.
All it does is cover the air intake so the fuel is pulled into the carburetor with very little air. You can see it if you remove the engine cover and move the clutch lever.

Thank you! But I still didn’t understand, if I put the lever on off the engine suddenly turns off, the only way not to turn off the engine is to constantly keep the choke lever on. I have another question, but is it normal that the engine is so slow? My inflatable boat goes very slowly, I’m in break-in it’s true, but sometimes and then I pushed to the maximum to see what the maximum speed is like and honestly people in kayaks go faster than me, but is it normal?
Sounds like you need to adjust the carburetor. If you know someone that works on small engines like a weed wacker, they might adjust it for you.
Unfortunately on a raft it’s a little slow. I think it’s because you lose thrust because it’s soft allowing it to tilt… sorry.

You might check something like this that says it can be used with ethanol blended fuels up to 10% ethanol.....

Can you troll with it? And is it to loud for trout fishing in small lakes?
The exhaust does exit below the water line, so that might spook trout? The boat and motor would be well suited for small lakes, but if noise is an issue, you could use it to get to a spot, then have an electric trolling motor. I wanted to be able to get to a spot, then shut it off to fish. You can run at slower speed to troll but the sound may still be an issue. It is good to run full speed to get to your favorite spot!

Not as loud as a chain saw. People joke that it sounds like a weed eater.... It's not really as loud as a weed eater, but it is not near as quiet as a regular boat motor. If your concerned about noise much at all, I'd look into a used regular outboard motor. Sorry I can't be more specific on noise level....

If gas stations have a single tank that is split up in tbe ground and you pump ethanol free fuel from it and someone gets reg gas before you there is reg fuel in the pump line still, its a valve that switches tanks but you always get some of what the person before you bought, find a gas station with separate fuel tanks for the ethanol

Well, 2020 in Indiana is mid-winter..... I haven’t tried 😂.

Storage space. The raft folds up into a 3'X3' carry case and no need for a trailer. Everything fits on or in my Subaru Forester... :0)
Electric outboard seems better. No noise, no hassle.
I tend to agree with you. A lot less to potentially go wrong. But at the time I didn’t want to lug around a heavy battery plus I didn’t want the limitations on distance. But for using on a small body of water your point is well advised.👍

Sorry to hear that. Mine seems to be doing okay. Others might like to know more of your experience, such as did you add gear oil down at the propeller? Did you slowly do the break in procedures? Was it is fresh or salt water? But if you've had it with the motor, no need to detail the experience any more.
@@BoilerDan1 all the screws were loose, the tube to adjust, then check the oil of the propeller shaft and it was all right, I started it in a tank with plenty of water and in less than 3 minutes it was reheated and I burned all the thread of the starter, turn off and when removing the top cover it looked all right, the mixture of gasoline and oil outboard was everything perfect, it should not have any damage if it is new but I am never good and neither the amazon nor the probidor were not responsible for the expenses of I sent it, I bought it from Panama, I did not buy more online, I lost a lot of money, better to buy one of proven quality

I purchased mine directly from the importer and it shipped from the factory new. There was no gear oil in the shaft, so I added it in. I did have one pull cord get caught and break but that was an easy fix. Sorry your experience was bad.

Possibly? I ordered a multi size packet from Amazon and found some that worked. Under $10.

are the bad fuel lines just on the 3.6hp or does the 3.5hp use the same fuel lines??
I think they are both the same. It’s not so much the fuel lines as it is the ethanol in fuels. In time I would hope that they will replace them with something that isn’t as quickly damaged by the current fuels available in the US.
@@BoilerDan1 in the uk were i am its the same script here i always use the ethanol free or very low ethanol fuels if am forced to. Definitely thinking about getting this outboard thanks for the knowledge Dan.
If you don’t mind keeping an eye on things, and figure on replacing the clutch every season….. that clutch would last longer if you were to replace the tension spring as it’s way too tight for this motor….. then you can enjoy the motor. I’d encourage you to watch the series as I did work out some issues.
A couple of things to know:
1. Break in should be done on your boat. If you use a bucket or barrel be sure to run cool water in it the entire time. (Off camera I kept adding in snow)
2. Don’t put any insulation under the cover…. I did and ended up removing it as it held heat inside.

Thanks for following along on my journey. I recently turned 71 and realized that maybe taking it out on an air filled raft on a river with submerged trees wasn’t really a smart thing to do…. No nearby lakes or ponds, so my boating adventures have come to an end….
Ah, but now I’m building tall ships ie…. HMS Victory, several versions of The Black Pearl, and several smaller fishing boats that I have for sale at a shop on the South Carolina coastline at Port Royal….. So the little boy in me still lives! 😂👍🏴☠️
