The tip with the dhal was shared by my great grand mother to my mom which I shared with you. Giving credit where credit is due is important ❤
Like You really had to let people know You shared that Dhal idea with her ... Lol ... Guess where I learnt about the Dhal Idea? From a Guy who is from Tobago ...
That trick with the dhal gives it the "doubles channa" taste. Tried it and loved it! No turning back from this recipe. Just saved it. It is the bess. Even smells like channa made for doubles. Yum. Delish! Thanks sooo much!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it hun! You're right the dhal makes all the difference! Hope you have a blessed day! ❤❤❤
@@ShesMakinDough same to you. My picky four year old son is loving your channa and bara recipe right now! 😁
@@Kalrenecarol aww that's awesome!!
I literally saw big people in this business did, their videos & it's the worst... Congratulations on a job well done my Dear & thank you kindly for sharing your recipe with us.. 🥰
I tried this last week and since then I've been sharing this recipe with all my family because it's so gooood..thnx for this
My first time making this and it came out so good and tasty. It cooked so fast too. I used a half cup of dried chick peas and I was surprised how quick they broke down with that baking soda trick. Nice lil pot of rice and my lil baby and me had a nice dinner. Thanks for sharing!
Nah man that's canadian 🤣 😂 or American not trini.
I've tried other recipes as well as this one. They are great. The one thing I love about yours is that it is fast and simple. It taste great and family approved! I have used this for over a year and will continue. Thanks 😊
I tried this recipe yesterday and let me tell you it came out perfect, the taste was amazing and everyone loved it. Thank you so much

Made this 3mnths ago following this recipe....going to make it again using this recipe again because it came out delicious....
Thanks for this recipe!! I've always wanted to taste doubles...I have friends that lived in Trinidad and they always spoke about how it was the best "street food". I'm from the Bahamas, so I'm not new to these flavours and spices. Thanks for this recipe...I made it today and the pot was empty in mins. It was awesome. I didn't have just cilantro, so I added a tbsp of homemade green seasoning I had in the fridge.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! it is a favorite in Trinidad, and the green seasoning is a perfect substitute for the cilantro! thanks for watching, love your youtube name as well!
Thank you much! :-) Definitely this recipe will be a keeper.
Walk
Darlin... Don't take on nobody... This is the way the older folks used to make doubles in Trinidad.. Well with the yellow dhal..but it's all good u go girrrrl

Yes exactly my grand father used to add dhal to his channa as well. He used to sell doubles in Trinidad when I was growing up. The younger generation don't know about this.

Just found your recipe, is the 1/2 cup of daal in the ingredients dried? I saw that you boiled a lot of it but only added a spoonful to the Chana. Is it a half cup of mushed daal to add or do you add all? Thanks!
1/2 half mashed up

Was looking for a simple channa recipe to use. Sometimes yuh go by the doubles vendor to get a cuppa channa- sauce, slight pepper and chadon beni. With SOE and pandemic it will be good to try…
Can the ground split peas powder be substituted in this?
@gracerampartap9676 I never tried it but I'm sure it would work perfectly
@@ShesMakinDough thank you very much, I will try it! 🤗
My goal in life is to marry a girl that knows how to make doubles. I am a Trini only by proxy but God damn I'm sure I love doubles more than most Trinis. Shout out to my fav double truck in Sangre Grande bus depot!
App how much cups is 2 tins of channa?
Whats the purpose of the baking soda? And if i dont have can i use baking powder?
The baking soda does a few things. With baking soda, the chick peas become nice and soft with less cooking time. It also releases a froth from the chick peas giving them a cleaner taste. Lastly the baking soda does give it a slightly different flavor.
With that being said, if you dont have any baking soda its ok. You may have to boil it a little longer to get the right softness but will still taste good.
I love all these special food that people are cooking it is great I would like to get some more tips on how to cook how to big and I would like to get to talk to some of those chef
I'm making this right now. Thanks for the recipe. Yum!

Fantastic recipe. Thank You
What is the purpose of the dhal and is it traditionally added to the chana?
Judith Legendre to me the dhal is necessary, it really gives the channa that distinct doubles channa flavor. I know that traditionally they did add it to the doubles
Love this recipe.Doubles vendors does put dhall in their channa
Karen Gadoo once my mom told me about it, I've never gone back. It's not the same without! ❤
MAGNIFICENT AWESOME TREMENDOUS DELICIOUS FROM A TRINIDADIAN AND PROUD US CITIZEN

I've just got a quick question. Do we need baking soda for the channa?
Kayy it adds flavor to the channa, like the channa you get from doubles is different from channa and aloo, also it helps tenderize it
What's a good substitute for the geera powder?
If you can find ground cumin..they're pretty much the same except this is roasted
.cumin is much easier to find
Do anyone knows how do you call Dhal in Spanish? I really want to make it but can't find it by the right name 😢
It's yellow split peas, chicharos amarillos paratidos
thanks for sharing a must try
Roxanne Beckles no problem hun I hope you enjoy!
Where do I find the recipe? She said the description box but I don’t know where that is. Thanks!
Melissa Lento all the amounts were said while making but I will place the amount below the video
I'm gonna try this for sure
I hope you enjoy hun!
+Home Cooking I think I will. lol
+Anesha Alexis lol, thanks hun! 💜
How am I preparing the dhal
Karissa Jaimungal just boil in some water with a couple small cloves of garlic, no saffron needed for it.
It's hard to find shadow Beni or culantro in NYC.
You can use cilantro
Did you say you used 2 cans of Chick peas? If so, did you remove the hull/skin before using them?
MzJill0329 I used two cans I don't remove them ☺
Home Cooking ok thanks
Trying this recipe right now...
I hope you enjoy it! Let me know how it goes! ❤
I love this recipe so trying this
Karfeisha Olyia I hope you enjoy hun!
Where was this doubles recipe hiding?
Do you have to add the dhal..
Yes it's necessary to get that doubles Channa flavor.
@@ShesMakinDough ok thank will try this friday please the lord....i have a son who loves doubles...he can eat 3 double & he is just 7 so you know i have to make plenty...

FineartAndBeaut
Hi, Can you type up the recipe? Like you did for the Bara?
Jen Halpin I'll try and do that for as soon as I can ❤
Looks amazing
What is Gira and where can I find it usually?
LadyJ717 geera is basically roasted cumin. you can find cumin at regular grocery stores in a powder form and toast for a little bit on the stove top. it won't be exactly the same but it will work ☺
Try on Amazon for Chief brand roasted ground geera
Geera is also called cumin. The whole grains are roasted in any of your small pots on the stove within a few minutes to a dark brown colour giving off a strong aroma. You can use your coffee grinder to make it into the powdered form or use a heavy rolling pin on your pastry or cutting board to crush it to a powdered form. Better yet, you can purchase it as "roasted cumin seeds" in the spice section or check Amazon.
What kind of curry powder are you using?
Darshan Dixit I used whichever is have on hand, usually chief brand
And why do you use baking soda? Thanks
Jake Searell the baking soda adds flavor to the channa as well as tenderize it
Jake Searell it’s to take out the impurities from the chickpeas while boiling skim off the frout
I tried this..total perfection..😍
Onike Cauldero so glad you enjoyed it!
Home Cooking yup..ill be doing this again this weekend..lol..will b boycotting vendors, cuz this recipe u posted is golden!!!!
Onike Cauldero really I have been watching TV video n scared to make it but it looks so good I was tried everything besides the dhal cause other videos didn't use dhal but didn't like it should of tried your way I feel these vendors in Trini tried this method cause no way my method look like this her method looks like them real doubles people in Trinidad am gonna try this dhal
@@shaniajones4923 i tried it using dhal jus as thus recipe said. I had no idea that was used. Im thinking its the secret ingredient that the vendors use as it is the right consistency. I made it previously without dhal..( it wasnt as good..lol)
Onike Cauldero lol so true I feel it's there secret ingredient also am gonna try it this week n see I did it today also without the dhal n I was like but something wrong it needed a kick feel that kick is really the dhal lolzzz
good job looks. yummy
thanks hun!
Hey I just makin the doubles already made the Chana and I'm out of yeast can I use baking powder instead
Karissa Jaimungal I've never tried it, the recipe does include yeast and baking powder. I wouldn't add too much baking powder because it can easily fall apart, the yeast helps the dough rise and to make the bara to be soft it may still come out well without the yeast but it just may not be as soft
Karissa Jaimungal I hope it comes out well for you let me know how it goes
Home Cooking or k cool I'm scared next thing they laugh at me
Karissa Jaimungal don't worry about that every good cook makes mistakes, when I first made doubles it was not good at all! I just kept trying, and at least you're trying which is incredible!
Home Cooking lol one thing I found a small packet of yeast lol #glad
Finally a Trini cooking vid where the person can actually speak intelligently and uses the correct words to describe the ingredients. 🙌🏼🙌🏼
When sodium bicarbonate is added to water, it transforms into carbonic acid, and the carbonic acid then breaks down immediately into carbon dioxide and water. All you're left with is sodium ions, which doesn't change the pH at all. I'm struggling to figure out how the addition of baking soda does anything at all. (I can see that it does, but I'm wondering what the actual mechanism is...)
Flavor and helps break down the channa a little bit...mostly the flavor of the channa
Believe it or not you need it for the flavor. Without it there is a huge difference. Atleast to me
nice will try this soon
n lallge hope you enjoy!
Whats Jira powder?
Jake Searell geera powder is just basically roasted and ground cumin, if you can't find it you can use cumin powder, it will work you can toast for a couple mins on your stovetop
Where do I find your bara recipe
The link should be below in the description box but this is it here ua-cam.com/video/IrJNr2v6YsY/v-deo.html
Not a Trinidadian accent. Are you?
she sounds like my cousin who lives in NYC. ...my cousin was born in Trinidad but grew up in NYC but still follows her Trinidadian tradition. so maybe it's the same with this girl.
