How to Double Crochet Stitch - Beginner Course: Lesson #9

  • Опубліковано 22 жов 2012
  • The double crochet stitch is the second most popular stitch. That is why it is so important to learn and understand how it works.
I start this tutorial by explaining where to place the first double crochet stitch in the foundation chain. This is helpful because if the placement is not correct the crochet project will not form correctly, or look right in the end.

Your videos and view from the camera have literally taught me how to crochet. I bought a book to teach myself; however, I couldn't get it correct to save my life. I then tried UA-cam and came across you! Thank you so much for your great videos. They're perfect. You talk the perfect amount of time, have the perfect view for me to see the stitches, and are so good at explaining and being able to show the stitches vs. going to fast or being behind your fingers where I can't really tell. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Keep up the good work!!!

You speak slowly, have slow deliberate hand movements which are easy to follow, and explanations that include the reasoning behind the stitches or in this case the chains. I have been crocheting for about a month now and was having the worst time figuring out what I was doing wrong in everything that required a double crochet so I decided to backtrack and learn this stitch all by itself. I tried a few other videos that weren’t very clear and then I stumbled upon yours. Not only did I figure out what I was doing wrong but you cleared up another question. Now I have confidence with myself and am excited to dive into and finish some real projects. Thank you so much for going slowly and for making each little movement made easy to see. You rock.

Okay I hope I explain this in a way that makes sense. When you chain 3 in the double crochet to start the next row you are creating a turning chain. The turning chain brings your yarn and hook up to the same level as your next stitch and all of this stitches that follow. So in each stitch the turning chain is different because each stitch is a different height. I hope that helps!

I would like to tell you that you are a very good teacher! This is the first time I actually understood how to double-crochet.

So glad I found this video! I picked up single crochet from a book but bought a couple more books trying to learn double crochet and watched a couple videos before I finally figured it out with your help!

Fabulous video, probably the best tutorial I've found on UA-cam, it's slow and not fast so good thankyou!!

This video is SO helpful, and so thorough. I definitely need to practice it, but this video has demystified the double crochet stitch for me. Thank you so much!

I have watched a lot of crochet videos and yours stands out above the rest! The speed is perfect for someone just learning how to do these stitches. I also appreciate you clearing up the confusion (where to put the stitch and if it is considered a dc) about the beginning and then end of the rows. Again the speed of the video and your stich work is perfect. It was nice not to have keep rewinding to see what to do. Thank you so much 🙂

OH MY GOSH! I can't even believe how much I've been messing up. I wondered why things have been looking so weird. It's been WORKING, but so weirdly. And I don't know WHAT I've been doing that I THOUGHT was a dc/ds, but it is NOT what you just demonstrated, NOR has it been producing what I remembered doing so many years ago. Thank you so very much. I have to REPROGRAM this brain now to do it correctly. I am very grateful for having caught this video before digging through any others. :D
In fact, I just chose to remove an entire row of what *I* WAS doing so I can redo it correctly. Yeh, I'm not about to take apart the entire blanket. I don't undo rows for ANYthing - that's a lot of work. But for THIS, I am actually doing it. :P

My Grandma tried teaching me crochet when i was a little kid (didn't happen:) well I'm 27 now and for last Christmas my aunt got me a book on how to and it helps but i learn better by watching videos. I learned to single stitch yesterday and now can double stitch. My grandma is pretty much blind now but when i told here I learned how she couldn't have been happier not a lot of people crochet in my family anymore :)

I love this video. I love how you slow it down and turn the yarn so that I can actually see what you're doing. It's oddly hard to find someone who actually does that in a tutorial video, so thank you! I am going to try a double crochet!

Thank you for the kind comment Lovelife...and I am glad my crochet videos are working for you!
I agree that the double crochet on the end of a scarf would look great. That is why I like crochet...you can be creative and come up with great ideas on your own!
