Iti s quite instructive from the line of questioning by the interviewer, that she comes from a western inculcated mentality and perspective. Words like debt trap, expansionist, informs a worldview that is moulded by western propaganda. Also, there seems a lack of awareness of historical understanding and preparation ahead of the interview. This is not so much a criticism of the interviewer, but I believe it is a pervasive mindset of the majority of journalists in Singapore, be it Straits TImes, CNA, or LHZB. Perhaps it is time to reflect on what the principles of objective journalism is, and step-back from promugating western tropes and regurgitating them ad-nauseam.
George Yeo, is obviously a deep reader of history. There's much he can enlighten Singaporeans on.

Funny. If you had all the money in the world, would you send your precious kids to the west or China? These words like debt trap, expansionist are all valid. If the truth prevails, there is nothing to hide. Yours is an age old mindset that cannot handle differing opinions from yours and Singaporeans are intelligent enough to know the difference between International news versus China propaganda. That’s why we are successful as a country. If we had become a puppet of the CCP, we would have ended up as a failed state like Laos or Cambodia

aiyah i believe CNA & ST has been instructed to be more slanted towards the Western narrative. This seem to intensify after LHL tell US & China o stop bickering or Sgp will be forced to take side. Sgp already did through their press although officially the gov't says they'll stay neutral. The press in Sgp is not independent else it would not be ranked 150+ out of 190 countries in Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index. There's some kind of a PR game being played by SGP here.

    • @KQ0909
      @KQ0909 Рік тому +1

Precisely. Gov keeps telling us to stay neutral but you can see that in fact there are insinuations that many citizens are influenced into taking China's side. Such interview questions and also news presentations by presenters loaded with biasness are everywhere in both of SG's 2 mainstream news companies - the SPH Media and Mediacorp (CNA being its English medium news outlet). By telling us to remain neutral but keep insinuating that people should not be influenced into taking the China's side, then actually is the Gov really neutral or is it in fact taking the other side? I can only advise people to read up a lot and stay knowledgeable. Doesn't mean that just because USA has in the recent past denied promising Gorbachev that it will not expand NATO eastwards, then it is not true. This was reported everywhere even in US newspapers such as the NYT. Back in end 2021, it was also in our news that Russia has asked US not to add Ukraine to NATO but US refused. When the war started, US and its Western allies' media used the phrase " 'unprovoked' war / invasion". Is it really unprovoked? The Ukraine provocation started in 2014. Western MSM does not mention Stepan Andriyovych Bandera nowadays, but he is a well-known Ukrainian nationalist. And go read up on the history of Middle East and Northern Africa starting from post WWII Suez Canal crisis to see the deeds of the Anglo-American.

Indeed, you cannot claim neutrality until those ties are completely severed. Same goes for all the publications across ASEAN countries and greater Asia. Asian news publications must not be beholden to either the West or China or Russia. Especially in perilous times like these, remaining neutral is a matter of survival.

Mr George Yeo expressed his views very succintly, with the relevant historical references. During the NDP rally, PM Lee pointed out Singaporeans should be wary of online articles that sought to sway us in one way or the other. This is important. To build up this immunity from foreign influences, Singaporeans will need to establish our own perspective. To do so, ST, LHZB, BH could carry more articles (and free videos for social media) written by our own think-tanks or experts like Mr Yeo, instead of just reproducing articles from foreign media.
During the 2019 Hong Kong protest, our local media did a great job by covering the news in an unbiased perspective, unlike many top US and UK media which I also followed. It will be great if we continue to present international news esp US-China relations in this format, which ST did recently on the disagreement between US and China over China's definition of international waters in its region. This will be more efficient than mere Singaporeans scouring over different news sources to try to obtain a more balanced view.

I've been an avid reader of straits times paper on a daily basis and also felt that ST tends to be biased and often just narrating the dominant western views based on articles esp from reuters. I felt that the dominant western narrative and justifications of actions from US were sometimes incoherent and without strong basis. Even when dealing with Israel Palestinian issues, ST felt biased, often leaning towards the Israel (US ally and Western narrative) and failed to be objective and comprehensive when exploring the subject. US had vetoed for Israel at least a total of 54 times! To truly shine and emerge as the trusted broadcaster, CNA/ST should leverage on our cultural insights being with Singaporean chinese and malay Muslims to understand the complex chinese nuances and Israel Palestinian conflicts with much more critical thinking, instead of basing them off western narrative. Which even i felt this way just reading ST daily.

The 9 dash line actually started when China was ROC, i.e. even before CPC ruled China as PRC. Actually it was the 11 dash line in 1947 (ROC) but PRC subsequently dropped 2 of the dashed lines in 1953 (by Zhou Enlai). 1 more fact, the Diaoyu Islands (what Japan calls as Senkaku islands) is also actually claimed by the ROC government but because the DPP in TW does not want to face to the fact that it is ruling ROC not "Taiwan", the current DPP government does not care about the Diaoyu islands (Diaoyutai by ROC, Diaoyudao by PRC) at all, leaving PRC to defend China's boundaries. Many people who says that "oh PRC is autocratic and yeah Taiwan (which is ROC, constitutionally speaking) is democratic" but don't know that actually what PRC has stuck by, is in fact the same boundaries that the ROC has maintained in its own constitution.

His comments on the South China Sea is also simplistic. China's claims from Ming and Qing Dynasty time is simply a dream. Both of these dynasty do not put much value on having a naval power. It was during Ming dynasty, which downsized the navy after Zheng He excursion. This is because China's concern is land-based threats, not sea. Secondly China's concept of sovereignty during the imperial dynasty is incompatible with the Western world at that time. China's concept of "sovereignty" is based on sphere of influence though diplomacy, which fades as it goes further out. The western world concept is based on land masses and fixed delineation based on maps. Which is why cartographers are so important to the western world at that time. Anyhow, without a strong naval force, the south china sea was plagued with pirates and became lawless until the arrival of the western powers which tamed the sea.

Mr. Yeo was not standing on the moral principle in the ownership dispute. Even if the South China Sea were owned by China historically, he should stand on a moral ground to say that the Chinese ownership was immoral and he supports the idea that the sea should be shared with others.
Instead, he still used the same historical claim (11 dashes) to support China's immoral ownership. How could such an immoral man be so honoured by society?
Or at least, he should support the UNCLOS which has given a moral delimitation of the sea. However, he missed again.

George Yeo restates China's claims that the South China Sea is as Chinese as Taiwan and yet does not reference the 2016 Arbitral Tribunal in the South China Sea Arbitration finding unanimously against China's claims. Instead, the former Singaporean Foreign Minister by his speech and actions has chosen to undermine and dismiss international conflict resolution mechanisms and the sovereignty of our fellow ASEAN Nations. George Yeo is clearly an agent and advocate for China. His actions and speech are not aligned with Singapore's foreign policy. A foreign policy he is well acquainted with.
In its 2016 judgment, the UN Tribunal on the Law of the Sea made important findings regarding China's claims in the South China Sea. The Tribunal found that China's "nine-dash line" claim exceeded the geographic limits imposed by UNCLOS, and that any historic rights that might have existed for China in the area were superseded by UNCLOS. As a result, the Tribunal concluded that China's claims were contrary to UNCLOS and violated the international law of the sea. These findings are significant because they reaffirm the importance of UNCLOS as the cornerstone of maritime law, and they underscore the need for all countries to respect UNCLOS and respect conflict resolution mechanisms to protect the international commons and avoid wars.
Following the ruling, ASEAN members issued a joint communiqué reaffirming the need to avoid actions that might escalate tensions in the South China Sea and to seek the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law.
George Yeo is sowing seeds of discord and division in Singapore, with our security partners and ASEAN nations during these possibly pre-war years. He seems happy to sacrifice the international commons of international law in support of Xi's CCP master plan. Why?
China has stated it will return the South China Sea to China to obtain fisheries, energy and other materials necessary to protect itself against deep sanctions by the international community possibly in the same time-tabled operation as the return of Taiwan. Xi's CCP has been observed progressively undertaking more preparations for war. The life-and-death struggle for appointments and to survive the gladiatorial combat of elite power politics of China generates unfortunate incentives for brinkmanship. The forces of geography on China mirror 1940s Japan. The chess positions on the board are fundamentally unchanged upon the invasion of Taiwan. China will be faced with the same fundamental strategic problems and may land on the same strategic errors.
The cutthroat elite power politics of 1930s Japan produced an epic tragedy for many people. Not least in South East Asia. Prof Wang Gungwu calls fact-free ultra-nationalistic histories a "terrible trap for the Chinese People". These apex Gladiators have manufactured "once-in-a-100-year" conflicts to catalyse unity in service of their own supremacy and their stated intent to "free" the human race.

For reference, Pedra Branca which is much smaller is classified as an "island", which then gives Singapore rights to the 200 miles EEZ around it.

hmm his explanation of debt trap is simplistic. I can somewhat agree that a debt trap scenario may not have been intentional. But most of the B&R infrastructure in Asia that is failing economically can be traced back to funding from China's bank. Now why would these banks fund such projects, which are so obvious will fail? The Western, Asia Bank and World Bank refuse such funding cos they are frivolous, without a clear and practical business plan to profitability. And when these series of China's funded projects fail, they drag the entire country down, as other other banks are unlikely to fund other developments as the country is struggling.
It may have started out as unintentional, but China's bank, being flushed with cash, certainly did not do their due diligence and started loaning vast sum at high interest rates.

    • @ktan8
      @ktan8 2 роки тому

Even if China doesn't get money from the loan back, many of these projects were conducted by Chinese companies (as a requirement for these loans). So essentially, China was just passing money from the left hand to the right hand, while the host country is taking up debt. So, even if China is unable to reclaim the loans, they aren't actually losing much money and these deals do make business sense for China.

Furthermore no words on those man-made islets and the claims on the surrounding territorial waters. Even we accept historical grounds, the legal status of those man-made islands are at best tenuous. One forgets that in the 1430s the Ming Emperor decreed an end to foreign trade and sailing expeditions. Zheng Ho's great expeditions were ceased, records were expunged from Official history, and the Chinese retreated from these seas for 500 years - NO they have not "always traded in these seas" they did, 500 years ago, then they left, closed their empire to the world and banned their merchants from overseas trading. When the Ming fell, the Qing who replaced them fought the remnants of the Ming Dynasty who holed up in Taiwan under the leadership of Koxinga(国姓爷,ie, Zheng Chengong). IT WAS Koxinga who dominated these waters with the largest fleet so that the Dutch and Spaniards paid him tribute for passage - but he was a pirate, a rebel, and basically not a branch of the Ming or Qing Dynasty. The Qing Dynasty banned sea travel, even devastated their coastal regions to prevent coastal towns from being used by Japanese Wako (pirates) and Koxinga's brigands. After Koxinga died the Qing absorbed Taiwan and ruled it for a few generations before the Japanese conquered it ....in all that time from the Ming dynasty till 1980s the Chinese had no significant naval or commercial influence in the region. They left for 500 years. So the South China Sea had NOT been China's lake at all.

@@matthews1082 very well thought. Appreciate this.
Yes they did retreat in large scale expeditions but they were still touch in the region at least as the central plain lead. Their retreat is NOT equal to losing their rights to the south china seas.
Even if officially they had reduced their influence, there were still many traders risking their lives travelling and trading with Southeast asian kingdoms then. Many became peranakans.
I agree with George that post WW2 the world indeed recognised south china seas as Chinese lake when KMT/ROC was in control of the mainland. The cold war had changed that and with CPC coming to power and winning the Korean war.
The US and the west starts playing up the SCS issue for political and economic reasons to subjugate China’s growth and influence as well as the potential oil and gas reserves found. They want a continuity of their power to exploit weaknesses they so jealously guarded… the seas as their last hold to their imperialist power they had held for over 500 years. Who wouldn’t want precious and valuable resources… hence pulling all in the region into a fight with China. Unfortunately they failed!
As of now I guess China’s wisdom and the wisdom of the region is working towards a solution. George’s last words in this video is a good one and I think is the best way forward for everyone endearing peace while enjoying the resources the region can enjoy without Western influences and interference (who has nothing in SCS other than self serving exploratory purposes).

@@alfredyap14 They traded but did not police, or assert a naval presence in the region, NOR did any of their maps at the time reflect any claims of ownership of the seas. Many nations traded in these seas at the time, many produced maps of these seas, and some, like the Spanish and Portuguese even produced maps that claim half of the world as theirs - if only trade and production of maps equals legitimate claims, then the British should own 3/4 of the seas! Therefore historical claims like those tendered by the Chinese, have to be invalid! KMT didn't have a naval presence in these seas either - basically what happened was, before the surrender of the Japanese, ie around 1945, Roosevelt asked Chiang Kaisek what he wanted to claim against the Japanese, and Chiang, taking a crayon, marked the infamous 9-dashed line on the map - that's the first time those lines appeared in history. Prior to that The KMT China Republic certainly never sought to claim anything other than the seas along their coast! Within a few years Chiang was Ousted, and the CCP took over the country. At the time, Chiang, the ousted dictator hailing from Taiwan, still insisted on those 9 dashed lines, but the Mainlanders soon assumed the claim as their own. There was NO legitimacy in Chiang's random lines AND even less legitimacy in CCP-China's claims to these seas. If a country which had minimal seaborne trade, zero naval power, and made no administrative in the region, but because they were pals with the US President, they were allowed to draw an arbitrary line on a map and lay a credible and substantive claim of a region, then the world is going to go up in flames.

Claiming an open sea and uninhabitable coral reef as national territory was never legal, let alone without surveyed boundaries. Even if it was true that the claim was made by Qing Dynasty, it was illegal then as it is illegal now. If at all, it is the countries whose fishermen had been fishing around these waters for millennia that have the rights. The fallacy in such claim cannot be glossed over as "historical claim". George Yeo should speak with some common sense instead of regurgitating the CCP line, as he has been doing for years like a communist propagandist.

India's claims are not without merit either. Allegedly making claims before another nation is entirely different to substantiation of those claims. Vietnam's 11 year conflict with China in which they routed the Chinese is not easily forgotten.

Manchuria ??? Manchurians invaded and caused the collapse of a Han Chinese empire, Ming dynasty.. And when they gradually took over China, they declare themselves to be ruler of all China as the Qing Dynasty. Over time they sinicized themselves i.e. adopt Han culture & language for reasons only known to themselves.
You shamelessly blabber off without any idea or understanding of history, do you ? I can see you want to side with India in the border dispute do so with more credible facts & reasons, else it only make you look like an idiot.

You go back as far as history proves. I believe the claim was before the 19th century, though Mr. Yeo mentions mainly the 19th Century Ching Dynasty, with continuation of claim to the 20th century, then 21st century? Why is it called the South China Sea?
