I dont understand how many people were misunderstanding Ken in the movie.
Ken doesn't exist to cater to the anti-men audience, his whole arc is knowing that he is good enough, kenough.
Barbie represents the women and how they dont have to be under pressure to be a mother or housewife and can be anything.
Ken represents the men and how they dont have to be under pressure to be better to fit the society and they are good enough as they are

Every thing is fine and dandy, what put me off was climax, where "Ken" will be forced to live life as before, till sexism prevails in real world. That messaging made me uncomfy. Although if the end was like that Barbie and Ken both acknowledge their actions and have a pact to work together to create more equal Barbie land, I would have got behind the movie

I think the climax was perfect. Especially because of the scene where barbie meets the old lady. There are no old barbies in barbieland and thats why margot's barbie finds aging such a beautiful process and thats why she chooses to be a human and to life a meaningful life. Ik many wanted a romantic storyline between barbie and ken but im happy they didn't go in that direction (for the leads). The way ken has been marketed by mattel is like an accessory to barbie, having no personality of his own and barbie was never marketed to be in love with ken. I think its beautiful greta focused on showing its important to be our own selves and have our indentity before pursuing a romantic relationship. If not, one person is always going to feel insecure.

I'll have to disagree on the ken statement, Ken has has multiple dresses and jobs and a personality of his own. In fact his creation was due to the girls playing with the doll wanting Barbie to have a boyfriend, it might be me but I don't really like the new direction they took in the movie

    • @manasveechavan2005
      @manasveechavan2005 10 місяців тому +11

@@misfitrogue989 yes I agree ken had many jobs but you also gotta why he did that in the first place; it was all but to impress barbie. Like it said in the movie, Ken's best day is when barbie noticed him. That's why I said he has no personality of his own cause everything he says and does is to get barbie's validation. The sad thing is barbie dosent reciprocate the same feelings. That's why I feel it's for the best she didn't end up with him. She was stayed longer in the real world than ken and realised the she isn't the empowering icon she thought she is and the unrealistic standards she set up for young girls. And in my opinion that's another she wanted to be a human. But I respect your opinion and the climax is anyway open for interpretation :)

    SPOILER ALERT!
I actually liked the ending. It was uncertain, it was kinda left at a place where it left you wondering what's next for Barbie, but isn't that what growing up is all about. It's scary, it's uncertain, but that's the beauty of it. It gives you the opportunity to find yourself, find your purpose and ultimately be the best version of yourself. And this moment is perfectly paired with Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For?" When the lyrics go "I don't know how to feel, but I want to try", that basically translates to it can be tough being in the real world, but we can definitely try. Barbie realizes that she can no longer be a stereotype, an ideal which can result in a polarized world. The real world is much more complicated than that and she wants to experience it for herself so that she can be a better version of herself, someone that people can relate to.

Same with when barbie experiences emotions and choose to be human after witnessing how it feels to be woman, just living with other woman and without any expectations. i think America's monologue about women was necessary. yes, the movie already had running themes of feminism throughout, but understanding the reason why women feel persecuted and insecure was hugely necessary. most men (in my opinion) immediately think about political rights and gender roles when asked about women's plight. but its the little things that they don't think about that really weigh on us and make women feel tied and hopeless. its a remarkable message to all young girls as well so that they know the distinction between 'true beauty' and 'unrealistic beauty'. it ties the entire movie together and makes it more impactful.

This movie is actually so sympathetic towards men. Some guys have increased found themselves lost because society’s traditional expectations of them are less relevant as women are earning more and being more successful. However this doesn’t mean men aren’t important and are “lesser” in any way to the women in their lives even if their wives/ gfs are the breadwinner or are more successful than them. The struggles Ken go through to find an identity and be “not just Ken” is a perfect encapsulation of this struggle. It also puts men in the shoes of the women like our mothers and grandmothers who were often often expected to stand behind and support the man of the house and a toll the lack of self respect takes on a person. It’s a wonderful movie and well thought out.

Also, can we just have this film without some men cribbing that it's anti-men !! I LOVE GRETA, as an aspiring filmmaker, it means so much to me. The behind the scenes of Greta laughing and having the time of her life while directing is inspiring. She is unapologetically herself and that reflects in the film.
I deeply resonated with the film, even though I never played with Barbies as a child, the feeling of being lost as a twenty something, trying to get in touch with inner child and escape the chaos of adulthood.
    SPOILER :

Exactly my view on Barbie. I absolutely loved Barbie. I had so much fun while watching this movie in a packed theatre. It was hilarious, crazy, weird and deeply thought provoking for me. In the hands of a lesser director this could have easily become one of the male-bashing female oriented movies. But herein lies the creative genius of Greta Gerwig. She makes sure to become a voice for both Barbies and Kens of the world. It also questions why even the Kens of the world are also somewhat brainwashed to behave in a certain way since childhood, similar to how the girls were, with the baby dolls.
In the end, I was shedding a tear or two as well. And I found the ending to be liberating with Ken finally finding his own identity and the quote that I loved towards the end, 'It is not Barbie and Ken, but It is Barbie and It is Ken'
And the songs were catchy and I was just enjoying those dances and colors. I would definitely recommend this movie.

The movie is a commentary on societal expectations of males and females, and how people get so caught up to meet those expectations. I think the movie shows both males and females as victims of it. @@Sunny-sc5vqIf you got sad seeing Ken happy about something trivial the point was that is how women feel all the time. Having the option to “be whoever you want” is just legally true for women but can’t be reality for most women due to social conditioning of how they are raised and what they are expected to be (not anyone, a wife and a mother only and grow up to be “likeable to men”). Maybe as a man you don’t know how women are raised but it’s very very deep conditioning that stops a lot of women from achieving things that they could if they weren’t stopped or denied. The only issue is physical weakness which is used against them over and over throughout life. So for you it maybe difficult to understand that women just started getting properly educated only 3 or so generations ago. Do you really think after centuries of not being educated or treated same as men - 30-40 years are enough for you to claim “there is no oppression of women?”. To me the ending meant that Barbie was now ready to be a woman, because through her journey in the film, she was now aware of how difficult it was to be a woman and yet how beautiful. It is the struggle that gives life its meaning and so she couldn’t continue living in her perfect world after having seen what womanhood is like. I think it’s a good ending for her character. Perfect, beautiful and pretty- she breaks down when she feels like those don’t define her anymore. But then she decides to become human, to explore what else she is and can become. Like every woman who has found a level of freedom, strength and agency to create her own life and make her own meaning and place in the world. Moving beyond being a stereotypical barbie. Almost like a teenager growing into an adult and facing the real world that is harsh and scary, and yet can be so empowering .

And I believe most women are talking about that when they try to express their grievances. It’s the inability to completely control your life (without judgement or pushback). Just wanting to be cared in the same way we do for others. It’s really not about hating men, we are just begging to please not hurt our feelings anymore. It is mentally and emotionally draining.

They had a fictional scenario were a man slaps a women from behind (which IRL would result in immediate life imprisonment) and near the end the Mexican goes on a rant about how the biggest issue women face is that it’s impossible to be viewed as perfect by every human on earth but this is true for any individual regardless of gender or status.

It's amazing how men complain how the movie doesn't do justice to Ken's arc, how all Kens are subservient to Barbies and live to be the love interest, how they wanna find an identity but it's hard within the constraints of society....but when throughout generations, when women have repeatedly been objectified not only throughout history of society but also in history of movies, it just shows that people are never uncomfortable about portrayal of characters unless they feel targeted. This movie is one of the most inventive satire on societal expectations, patriarchy, and self identity.

The problem in this movie is how they portrayed real life. As soon as Barbie gets to the real world she gets sexually harassed, give me a break. The whole messaging of the movie would have worked back in the day. There was no point in making this movie in 2023.

Something I think is important about the scope and earnings of this movie is that it shows that movies made by women and for women (not because the audience is only women, but because female characters are represented well), where the female lead earns equal pay, do have a significant market!!! So yeah...not much of an excuse to continue to show lack of depth for female characters and show less respect for women behind the scenes and in the scenes in film industries. I think that in Indian theaters, a lot of times even barring the female characterization, the show timings, and frankly the show atmosphere (lots of loud men), makes it uncomfortable for women to come to theaters. But imagine, if a few changes were made, then maybe another section of the audience could be tapped to a new level. I'm not saying it would be a perfect fix, because mindsets need to change too (and not just in India), but it's a place to start!

Unfortunately most people didn't get the overall message. We have to remember it is a satire and both the Barbie Land and Real World are extreme representations of polarity which is not what we need. I think it does well to deliver the message of why individuality is more important.
Also I support how at the end how they didn't just give the Kens the equal status in the councils or whatever because at the end of the day at that very moment, in that fictional world the Barbies were more qualified (by design) to hold those positions and all the Kens have just been are side characters with no "real" talents other than being the eye candys to the Barbies. Upliftment on basis of gender and not merit/talent is never a sign of a healthy society . But from now onwards it will not be "Barbie...and Ken" but "it's Barbie and it's Ken". I think this was the first step towards that balanced and independent world.
The movie definitely has a lot of flaws but just bashing it without taking a moment to think about what it really wants to say is sad for a cinema lover.

It's intriguing to me how Barbie, often criticized as a representation of the very attributes that modern feminism challenges, is being used to portray the message of female empowerment, while often depicting men as the problematic figures in society. In my view, the current fascination of Hollywood in shifting the narrative through productions like Ghostbusters 2016, She-Hulk, and Ray in Star Wars, among others, detracts significantly from audience engagement and quality filmmaking. We've seen plenty of well-developed and powerful female characters in films such as Terminator, Kill Bill, MI series and Edge of Tomorrow, which manage to avoid the caricaturisation of any gender. I believe we need more female _characters_ instead of _female_ characters

They will have to work their ways up as women have to in the real world". NOW, could they have shown equality right there? Yes. Ummm... BUT IT IS A SATIRE. THE MOVIE IS A SATIRE THAT'S there to disrupt you. It challenges you by making you uncomfortable that it is not EASY to achieve instant equality for Kens because they represent the women struggles. In that way, Kens actually represent Women, as opposed to men!
If they had shown the hunky-dory equality, you wouldn't experience the discomfort that it's still in many ways not a solved issue. Women go out of that theatre and still experience catcalling. The point is satire, a genre known for its discomfort.

I'm sorry but barbie movie might have good intentions about their message but the way they portrayed was wrong. It came out to be anti-men, woke, sexist. I was literally enjoying the movie until the monologue came and my friend shouted 'stop complaining'. My Message to all the people is, if you want something, you have to earn it. Blaming the society and calling it patriarchal is just a p*ssy move

I don’t understand how some people are saying that this movie was anti-men when they literally had Barbie admit that she was at wrong for ignoring Ken’s feelings and operating Barbie land, ignoring the Kens. Had it been another woke movie, they would’ve shown Barbie as an arrogant feminazi who never admits her mistake. And Kens are roughly supposed to be this world’s women and Barbies are supposed to this world’s men (in some context).

Oh yeah in the real world all we have to do is say sorry to women also and you wouldn’t consider the system sexist, you fucking radicalized idiots man, the system is still there to ostracize the men, if it was satire to show how it’s the same for women we would see the criticism of Barbie world also but nah it’s wholesome and a great sisterhood 😂smh

What i loved about the movie was that the first sequences in the movie in barbieland was shot in way smiliar to how i played with dolls in the barbie house. And the whole kens being treated in barbieland - existing only for barbies eyes , doing only beach echoes how women are treated in some male led films where women are just eye candy, existing to look hot in skimpy clothes, have a dance sequence then fight each other for the man's attention. A male singing about his empowerment. The line about how after barbies took over govt. The narrator says ken will enjoy the same equality in barbieland as women do in politics in real life was hilarious. Youve covered most of this in your matlab kuch bhi series. The barbie movie takes the stuff women are protrayed in some movies and gave it all to ken here. I loved the monologues. The ending was wierd for me too. But i think about how they told ideas dont end. So this was probably a no ending end.

first half cracking. second half very mid. felt like two different people directed these. and some of the stuff did not make sense.
How do women who have lived in Barbieland in woman dominated world, get so easily convinced by patriarchy, that too, by Ken, who is not shown as anything super smart. weakest plot point IMHO.

Margot Robbie's movies always have some material to look forward to. They aren't just plain entertainment. She's smart and more so as a Producer. In my mind, she's like Anushka Sharma. Hardworking, smart, works with talented people, and sniffs out a good story.

I actually loved the ending because there was no specific ending. I think Greta wanted us to have our own individual endings, or maybe we don't need endings at all. Imagination is something that lives forever, and maybe Greta wanted us to imagine the different scenarios, and that is something really smart, I must say. I don't think you can really compare Barbie and Oppenheimer because they are very different from each other. And yes, I felt, for the first time I felt I was heard, my mother was heard, and every other mother and individual like me was heard. LOUD AND CLEAR. I loved Gloria's speech. I felt a kind of relief that, now I won't have to explain again and again how I feel when I am belittled as a woman. This was a great movie. And I would definitely like to see Barbie again.
