  • In this video I learn how to paint a Jetski which is really a Yamaha GP1300R "WAVERUNNER". Im curious how it'll hold up for the season and will review longevity of the paint in a later episode. The ski had major fiberglass work done to the nose so it needed the paint anyways. This will be an ongoing series until the ski is complete so watch out for more videos.
    Please share any advice in the comment section to help me out.

    Painting can be finicky. Unless you have a really good setup it’s going to be unpredictable. I can spray one day and get almost zero orange peel. The next time I get some using the same paint out of the same gallon. Dry air is absolutely necessary. Clean surfaces as well. If the surface sets for any period of time it is going to need cleaning and possibly sanding. It is fun though once you get the hang of it. My question would be, why not use gel coat? Also Pete from DIY auto school recommends cleaning/prepping with nothing but water and maybe soap.

    The fish eyes is from moisture in your compressor and airlines also way to close with the gun

      It's also from dirty fiberglass. Fiberglass is tough. There is a special stuff you can put on fiberglass before painting. I don't remember what it was. Fiberglass fisheyes way more than metal.

    Just got a beat up ski and going to be doing a nice rattle can job with some epoxy paint hoping it comes out decent

    You need to get some fisheye additive to put in the paint, it will help cut down the chances of it happening next time, it could be contaminate in the airlines

      I am going to look into that. I appreciate the input. I did how ever notice my compressor shooting oil into the air while I was painting which was a lesson learned. Thank you

    I painted my waveblaster with ppg's sign paint. It is thicker then basecoat clear coat. It has lasted 10 years now and looks great. There is nothing wrong with painting the ski with urethane paint if you know how to do it amd take care of it. I am a painter by trade and used 1k sata jet guns to apply it. 200 a qt is cheap. I have seen pearl thats 700 for 6 ounces.

    That is called biting. You must do a light coat first then you can start doing heavier coats you are also getting too close with the paint gun. You must also only go Max 50% overlay I don't know who you're talking to but they're not very good what they're supposed to be doing

      This might be a long shot but wouldn’t you happen to have rear right bumper for 2015 vx and up in black? Can be used or damaged, I dont care at this point since season is about to begin here in CA and I have nowhere to find one. Lmk pal

    Dude I tried doing this shit like 4 months ago and it was a fucking nightmare. I consider myself halfway decent at painting but I will never ever try to paint anything that travels on water ever again.

      Its definitely takes patience. Ive been so busy at the shop this season that I still haven't finished it completely. Once shrink wrapping season is done, more videos on this ski will be coming out!

    How did you flip the JetSki upside down do you still have engine in it?

    • @JetEnvy_TV
      @JetEnvy_TV  2 роки тому +1

      Engine was still in it. I used engine hoist to get it flipped.
      Wouldn't recommend as I did have to touch up some paint after I corrected it back over.

    Did you check your spray pattern before you sprayed you put on a smaller box and spray it on the box and see how wide your fan is it's supposed to feeling like a straight line the fan

    I’m confused can someone explain so I want to paint my jet ski can I strip the paint down to the gel coat and then just apply primer and coat after sanding ect or do I have to remove the gel coat and then re apply gel coat and primer ect

    One thing you're probably using the wrong kind of paint I've used rattle cans on 4 diff jet skis it looked better than most car paint jobs. First of all what you said to be getting your right boats jet skis you need to use gel coat. Second of all if you use something different rattle can spray gun to paint need to sand first with 80 grit wipe down with cleaning acetone or wax and tire remover . First light coat of primer light sand 200 grit second coat good base coat let dry and light sand 400 grit third coat primer good solid coat let cure 24 hours even if it's fast drying. Repeat same thing except with on first top coat of paint color then 1,000 grit for the second and third coat let cure minimum 24 hours wet sand 2000 grit after cured very light coat 2K clear coat sand 2000 grit second coat of clear light sand and a third repeat more layers of clear coat and sanding the more of a mirror finish you will have. Need to send in between every coat till done clear coating when clear coat is done and cured for minimum 5 days again even if it's fast drying wait the 5 days then very light wet add compound and start buffing you will have a remarkable mirror finish even with Rust-Oleum paint cans

    That 75 % us to much 50 % it's your gun gasket or cleaning not good p.s. metallic is a bitch to paint I would need to be there to give you advice and really see what is going on. Or spray it for you go you clean out the air valve at the top of the cup? And take the needle all apart to clean properly? I would spray the whole side from front to back in one swipe don't paint in sections but looks descent

      How would oil from the compressor get all over your ski?

    • @JetEnvy_TV
      @JetEnvy_TV  2 роки тому +1

      Apparently there was a breather hole at the top of the compressor motor and i had just filled it with oil. The compressor sits in the same area I was painting. I realized once I saw the oil on some paper work
