A fantastic trip down memory lane and particularly great to end with Ray Hanna’s ‘ Valley dip’ at the Biggin Hill Air Fair. Many thanks for sharing this video 👍🏻
I am pleased to read that you enjoyed this video. I enjoyed videoing the sequences, but sadly, most of them were filmed using VHS. I wasn't able to afford a digital camcorder until 2001. I first used my digital camcorder to record my late mother's 90th birthday, something that I will always treasure!
Spitfire PL965 was a Mk PRXI. Its first test flight was on 23rd Dec 1992 - pilot Mark Hanna. In 1945 PL965 had been operated by 16 Sqn as a high altitude PR aircraft and the aileron problem was "connected" to this fact. The problem was subsequently resolved. The first flight was indeed videoed - BY ME! It may be seen on UA-cam, just look under RGNVideo. I hope you enjoy it,
You can easily say who of the two was flying, Ray had a more agressive way of flying and loved pulling Gs, Mark was definitely more sweet at controls, both of them enjoying low levels. There is a story behind this Bearcat-Fury duo flight I got from Steve Grey himself... it seems that after a while Ray found funny to give Steve a hard time to keep on formation, thanks to the Fury fantastic power, but Steve proudly told us something like: he didn't succeed ! Tks so much for posting your videos !
Regarding mwood18105's comment "the weather was rubbish". On the morning of 23rd Dec 1992, there was a severe frost and when Mark Hanna was about to conduct the first test flight, the cloud base had descended to about 500 feet above Rochester airfield and the visibilty had dramatically reduced. Despite this Mark managed a few circuits. On the 1st Feb 1993 Mark flew PL965 and conducted a full air test, before flying PL965 to Duxford. This flight may also be seen on UA-cam - see RGNVideo.
Wow, that last dive was insanely low. Amazing pilots, both of them. Didn't Ray (or was it Mark) do the "Spitfire under the bridge scene" in the excellent Piece of Cake?
I remember Ray Hanna disappearing into the valley at Biggin Hill and emerging from it seconds later. They were good days and years.

Ray Hanna did it! (Wonderful clip there, never to forget!)
I could think of many words to describe piece of cake, excellent isn't one of them.
