Such a beautiful aircraft the Spitfire. My old headmaster was a Spitfire pilot during WW2. If he took our class when our teacher was absent we would get him talking about the Spitfires as soon as we could. It always worked, math became a history lesson. A couple of our teachers were WW2 RAF pilots. RIP
l once delayed my take off in a little Cessna, so Ray Hannah could take off before me in a spitfire (so he wouldn't overheat). Oh was l rewarded! The tower instructed me to "line up and hold". Ray then did a beat up before pulling up, doing three rolls, leveling off at a thousand feet, and leaving the circuit. As he passed me his wing tip was six feet from mine, and his prop was less than a foot off the runway. l was then cleared for take off. Never has a cessna felt more like a moped, Un under powered moped.
I refuelled this Spitfire at the Biggin Hill RAF At Home day in 1972. I knew nothing about the aircraft, but Ray explained where and how much fuel he needed, showed me the little red crow bar inside the cockpit door. He was already famous but treated me with good manners and respect. I 'enjoyed' it so much, I refuelled the aircraft three times as he filled in for air show no-show aircraft. A really fond memory. RIP Ray and Mark.
Was lucky enough to see Ray’s last appearance at Flying Legends (2005) at Duxford. He did an awesome display in MH434 after being part of a tailchase with 7 other Spitfires (3 more Merlin’s and 4 Griffons - including a PRXIX with a Shackleton engine and contra-rotating prop). Best Airshow I have ever seen! Would love to revisit sometime, but it is a long way from Adelaide, South Australia!
Mark Hanna was my childhood hero. Unlike most kids of my era who liked pointless celebrity's Mark was mine, because he did something. Ex RAF pilot who kept history alive, and he was a bloody nice bloke too, I was absolutely gutted as a 13 year boy when I found out he was killed after the landing gear failed on his Buchon and it caught fire. Rest in Peace Mark, your a true inspiration, a gentleman, and a damn good pilot!!
I was lucky enough to fly with both of them. I had my first ever flying lesson from Mark in a Pilatus P2, and flew in the back seat of the P40E with Ray on a few occasions. I remember the summer evenings - they would wait until Duxford has closed and the car park had emptied, then they would grab one of the planes and go for a 20 min flight. The flying was jaw dropping!! Skimming the grass, low level aeros, mock airfield attacks...stuff you wouldn't get away with today - just amazing. Two of the nicest guys you could ever meet and very sadly missed.
THEY LEFT US A GREAT GIFT, THEY SHOWED US HOW'S IT'S DONE PROPERLY! R.I.P BOYS, TALLYHO !!!

I also, with my partner, happened across Ray Hanna, briefcase in hand entering a Duxford hut for a debrief after his display. Politely turning down most of the autograph hunters. Says it al about his unassuming manner. Was shocked only a few weeks later to hear new that he had died...
How did Ray Hanna die? Apparently he last flew MH434 16th Oct 2005 but died on 1st Dec 2005. So he never had to retire from flying but kept doing it until his passing. Legend:-)

Superlatives cannot convey the talent of Ray and Mark Hanna.

Thier home plate was at Duxford which is the Imperial War Museum for aviation. It is located South of Cambridge. I recognized the Concorde on some of their passes over the field. This should be on your bucket list. www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-duxford www.ofmc.co.uk/ I met them when I was stationed in the UK, we had the same last name. Great men & never to be forgotten. Ray Hanna once flew a spitfire under Winston bridge in Co Durham for a scene in the tv drama Piece of cake back in 1988
Ray had too .... Moggy couldn't manage it !

"less than a foot". Poor judgement from a Cessna driver.

Very smooth program. Wonderful piloting skills. Hearing a Merlin sing is always exciting.

Ray wasn't British....
@@MBCGRS No of course SA? My error, apologies.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab A Kiwi.
And now Paul Bonhomme is doing just as good a job of displaying MH434 as Ray and Mark Hanna did.
A beautiful aircraft, well flown, a delight to watch and listen.

Met Ray when he was Red Leader. I was ten i think!
thé post beautiful airplane never built, andi know what i'm speaking,i'm French!
People sometimes forget that Ray was a member of The Red Arrows for years, including a stint as "Red 1".
They both had the ability to make the Spitfire dance like a ballerina. Sadly, we'll not see their like again. 😢
