After a series of complicated and risky surgeries, China’s “folded man” is finally able to stand upright for the first time in 28 years. Li Hua suffers from ankylosing spondylitis which can cause bones to fuse and the spine curve forward. In the case of 47-year-old Li, his upper body folded forward completely. After enduring four surgeries which involved breaking and reconstructing some of his bones, he is gradually adjusting to a far more normal life than he had before.

Her saying it wasn't his fault that he got sick is so important to me. She refused to abandon him, stayed by his side through it all and got to see him heal and get better. And even after all this time, he worries about being a burden...
I hope she and Li get to do and have the things they want. They deserve it, and much more.

I have been following this story for some time. His mom is an extraordinary lady. She literally went to the ends of China to find a solution for her son to get better because she was genuinely worried about what would happen to him after she died. She didn't want him to have a horrible life after her. Thanks to the Doctor and Li for taking the risk and moving forward with the operation so that he can walk now and be able to support himself with things he wasn't able to do at all before. I love that he plays the song for his mom and how she says it brings her tears each time. It is a beautiful song and she has a beautiful voice.

I have this disease and it affects everyone differently. Some have it harder than others. What Ive learned so far which has helped me a lot is that you have to believe and help yourself first. Trust in yourself and dont give up. This disease maybe scary but the only way you get defeated is when you give up and stop trying. Try out something new everyday and soon I hope youll find yourself in a better place than you were before.
Hope you all get healed and my prayers to everyone suffering the same disease.

Same with my paternal grandfather, when he was dying of lung cancer at 85. He was such a serious, dignified man and I’m not sure he’d even mentioned his mother (long gone of course, I believe she passed away young in their native India) for decades. When the end was fairly close and the pain escalated at a pace at which it briefly outran his pain-relieving medication, he suddenly started crying out for his mother. My father was very very shaken up.

I don’t know exactly, but i think they would have put a metal rod in his neck and back to hold him up straight and so all the spine bones heal together into one long solid bone as opposed to separate vertebrate pieces like a regular spine (I think that’s what a spinal fusion is). So he can’t move his neck or back like a regular person, but at least he has a much better quality of life than before.
