I'd be prepared to bet that the engine will probably be infinitely better than when it left the factory the first time. It's certainly being assembled with more care now than it would have been done originally in the LandRover factory. Love your work Christian, if my Toyota engine ever breaks I'll get you to rebuild it, but I guess by the time that happens I may be dead and you'd be retired. 😂

Great as ever 😀 When I used to rebuild engines at home decades ago, I was young and didn't have all the measuring tools. Mostly they worked just fine for years after, but I had one that would not rotate as I tightened the caps down ... took the crank back and found the re-grinder had not done all the journals correctly !!!! They were 4cyl Mini and Ford engines and nowhere near sophisticated at that time (1960s/70s) - but I paid my own way through college doing that and welding panels for MOT Tests. Salad days 😁

Truer than you might think, for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, factories rely on Quality ASSURANCE rather than Quality Control.
Quality Assurance implies that every component used IS in spec' so the worker doesn't need to verify it for themselves.
Secondly, the guy building the engine isn't going to be the one laying down their money to buy the car so they don't really care if something is a tiny bit loose/tight.

    • @Darklightbeam

Absolutely fascinating. When you bought this car you asked us to say what had exactly caused this engine failure. I suggested that it was the car’s spirit that knew about you both, and wanted you to be it’s new owners. It’s a spiritual thing and you have taken your repair to the ‘N’ degree. the car will be very happy now and last you a long long time. Very well done- I love my LR3 also.

I've heard that if you don't have old bearings to put in place as you did, you can swap shells across the biggest and smallest clearances in order to bring a tight or loose clearance into spec. Even the shells have some variance, so it is worth trying before running out and buying another set of bearings or machining/polishing a block/crank

Im guessing here, but is or would it be possible to check (X ray) the actual casting of the new crankshaft? There must be a reason why some of these crankshafts snap in exactly the same place early on and others can go on for 300k kilometres obviously the problem is not servicing or oil distribution or oil pressure, it must be the crank itself, I suggest.perhaps poor casting of some ie a tiny air bubble(s) perhaps ? We used to buy the spent scrap Ni Chrome foundry grids form Ford at Dagenham Plant and the percentage of the nickel assay content really varied in those although they all looked identical and were supposed to be the same and I mean really varied from 37/18 up to 60% Nickel assay content

Christian, now you have two mangled crankshafts it would be interesting if you could try to measure the radii on the crank pins and main journals at the webs and compare to published dimensions. There was a comment from a JLR mole I recall that there may be some grinding dimensional issues. An excessively small radius would give a stress raising effect and reduce fatigue resistance. It is a bit late however now to measure the new crank without yet another dismantle !

A truly remarkable video. It is beyond belief that a range of premium vehicles with such astonishingly high RRPs is so compromised by an engine likely to suffer malfunction so catastrophic it takes them beyond economic repair. Our shared difficulty is that we don’t really know what the root cause of the failure is. You can only hope that doing everything else really well will compensate for the design flaws. Maybe you should have a poll regarding what oil to install. Given how tight #1 bearing is relative to the others and the below spec end-float I’d be tempted to go with 5W Dumb-ass for 2000km and check the filter & oil-pan. I’d change this out for 5W 40 for the summer and then revert to 5W Dumb-ass in the winter until you were past 160,000km. Thanks for such superb entertainment on a wet Bank Holiday here in England!

While I won't agree with everything you do, at least you have a reason for it that does provide justification for your actions. I agree with your assessment re the front bearing having a smaller hole as it supplies only one connecting rod versus the middle ones supplying two each. I would love to say only time will tell, however it seems these engines can snap a crank anytime.

What a brilliant series of an engine rebuild.
I've been doing some research, as I'm going back home to the UK after working in Taiwan for 12ish years, and looking at buying a LR4.
My research has come to a point that typically, or at least, most of the crank problems have happened at the 60,000 mile (96,560km) point.
There are exceptions, like yours, but again the majority have happened at the mentioned mileage and Km distance. This would have an effect on the decision of 'at what mileage/Km would I buy my LR4 at?'
I know there are probably other factors to go by, such as how the vehicle has been used, looked after, etc, but I'm just using the above as a general rule.
Again, great series and more fun in the future to you both.
