I agree with Christian. "What goes around, comes around" is what we say in English. Do the right thing by everyone you meet. Many years ago I sold a 3 year old car. It was a 4.2 litre petrol straight six and a young fellow rolled up with his father to take a look at it. I immediately said to the young man that this was not the right car for you, it is not fuel efficient and also it has a couple of small dents that I never got fixed. Later the father said to me that he valued my personal integrity and pulled out his police badge and thanked me for my honesty. They did purchase the car but I am still waiting for the karma to be returned.

I haven’t read all the comments, but just in case it hasn’t already been mentioned, we carry out compression tests on these by doing a relative compression test using an oscilloscope monitoring the current taken to turn the engine. I forgot to say a "HUGE" thank you. I'm in New Zealand, I drive a 4MOTION VR6. I had a problem with some of the steering/ABS sensors. Some of them are unavailable from the dealer. After watch a plethora of videos & going online over a 5year period to find the fault as I was getting ripped off because sensor after sensor with the braking system started to go. Every sensor starts at a few hundred dollars or euros then a pump alone is €2500+ The car is a 2001 model btw. I checked on eBay to find "reputable" 2nd hand dealer. I saw many suppliers in Latvia/?Lithuania. I bought one from the UK & Germany if I remember correctly. Last year I sent my car back to my mechanic who then sent it to his auto-electrician/tuning guy. 1 of the sensors were bad. 😂 After your more than informative video on the subject of "used car parts dealers" in Germany/Europe. I will never make that mistake again. I watch your videos every week as I used to drive a Landrover & find you videos to be among the best the world can produce. Thank you so very much for the heads up. Your honesty, integrity, ability, workmanship, ethics & wisdom are 2nd to none. It is important to pay tribute, where tribute is due. Cheers from Auckland 🇳🇿 🇩🇪
Looking on the bright side (😅), you’ve rebuilt enough SD6’s now that it should be a cakewalk for you… but the costs sure do mount up. And as for the engine mafia, there’s a UK breakers that proudly show off their helicopter purchased off the back of their business and they have a couldn’t care less attitude. On the flip side, there are some decent people out there too; we should all name and shame the bad ones!
I would be certain that Christian and Vera explored all avenues in their search for an engine - including all known contacts helping. So, no need to offer any other thoughts. This will have been a calculated risk for valuable and enjoyable content. Sadly this "supply" situation is worldwide for as long as there is a demand. As the saying goes - "Some days you are the dog and some days you are the fire hydrant" 😁 Great Sunday morning as ever C&V
As always Guys, another fascinating video showing how to approach sophisticated tasks on the LR 3.0 v6 diesel. Wishing you the very best of luck in the coming stages... Dave
Way back in the 80’s stationed in Sennelager, I had a BMW E21 (I loved that car) our local scrapyard could not be more helpful. I wanted a set of Alloy wheels as my E21 had steel wheels. On checking their stock, they had 3 in excellent condition but one poorly curbed and some wheel nut missing and would not sell me them. Taking my number they would get back to me when they had a complete set and would hold the 3 wheels until that happened. About 10 weeks later I got the call to come and get them. Was well happy with the result. Many more visits after that and always looked after very well. May be this free movement didn’t go down well after all 🤷 Super content as usual C&V
Thank you both for the great content. I do hope the engine works out. I bought a remanufactured BMW e90 engine about 7 years ago for about 6k and it worked out wonderful, but that was from a company that specialised in engine repair.
Well Im selling used parts in UK off land rovers and theres 100% honesty in my business, you always got 30days warranty on anything you buy, also sending lots parts to europe and dont have any problems 100% positive feedback from customers
5:40 It's not different in other countries. But that often goes for car mechanics also. At least the smaller behind-the-corner services. I'm lucky I finally found a OK place that I'm fairly happy. Still having trust issues towards all mechanics. "Do I really need to replace that part (yet)? And did it really take 4 hours to fix?"
I sold my RR gen2 V6 diesel. From oil dillution to EGR warnings…..the engine is smothered in gizmos to gwt it to euro6 standard. Only geniuses like Christian can keep these things running. Love the videos as wedrive a boring x3 diesel now but no amber warning lights
Used car part dealers have always got you by the short and curlies, because like Christian says, you want it, they got it. I do hope that it is not a complete lemon, and that you get it up and running soon. The new camera is a great improvement on the one you've retired 👍. Another interesting video from you two, look forward to next week 😉🇬🇧
My dad (who was a very good engineer) used to say that there are two ways to do things. The right way and the English way. I sat here watching Christian put 5,7lt of oil in an English V6 diesel and thought to myself but my German Mercedes V6 diesel OM642 takes about 9lt of oil and you never hear the horror stories about them that you do about the Lion V6. Now that you have all the bits bar the turbos you can let Robin weld that other block and build up a spare engine, just think of the content you'll get from that. You know you can do it!
2012, OM642 was an absolute dogs breakfast for Mercedes. Oil cooler seals fail even after they were changed to the viton rubber. The swirl flap linkage arms are plastic and the connector holes become oval through use. Timing chain stretches needing replacement. Timing chain guides are made from cheap plastic and fail early, water pump housing castings warp, DEF tank heaters fail when its below zero. You must have a good one, mine put me off Mercedes forever.
@@davidsanderson6044 My Vito has done nearly 300,000 miles with none of those issues except for the oil cooler seals. My brother has a similar vehicle and his is also extremely reliable. I don't hold a candle for Merc, I think their customer care sucks but I can only speak as I find it.
Another great video, cant wait for the tear vdown and rebuild. I,m in the uk and fear that used parts dealers here are the same as you describe. Ebay sellers will have a 'Manke Me an Offer' facility but then reject every offer below their stated proce🙄. Scrap Yards as they used to be known in the UK were intimidating places to visit, a friend visited such a place near Colchester for a VW Beatle rear light unit and when he pointed out that the price the guy was asking was actually more than a new one he snatched it back, called him a Saturday morning Tiddly Winks Player and told to f*ck Off🤣 My own experience has generally been beter though. The first place I visited was in Ipswich when I was only 17, the owner was an ex boxer, baldhead, brocken nose and coveredin tatoos (it was unusual back then). He wanted £15 for the Mini engine I needed and I asked if he'd take an offer. He asked me how much and when I said £7 he called me a cheeky c..t and then asked asked me why I thought my offer would be enough and I told him thats all I had! He thought for a moment and then re-affirmed than I was a cheeky c... but that he admired my nerve took my money and then helped me load it in my car. 👍
It happens everywhere I once had to explain to a wrecker that had sold me a bad engine that no this is not just business it is infact very personal to me. He got the message in the end and reluctantly took it back. it was a small town and he avoided me for years after 😂
Its a Holiday here in the UK today! Thanks guys for another entertaining and informative video I don’t think dodgy parts dealers are unique to Germany we have them in the uk very dishonest profession!!!
It's a shame that engine numbers aren't simply recorded at every MOT or TÜV so they can be tied with the chassis and add some traceability without having a VRM. Still a brilliant video Christian and Vera. Maybe it's time to set up your own breakers yard
I think that >beep< gene is a requirement in the UK automotive world as well. There’s a scale, the better they can hide the >beep< gene, the closer they are to selling in the ‘new car dealerships’, then as the scale drops, the >beeper< goes down, first through ‘used car dealer’ then eventually to ‘used parts dealer’.
Christen and Vera, another great video and great informative information, I have bought a second-hand engine in the UK had the same problem not running correctly. Look forward to the next video, new camera much better.🤕 ..
Love the use of “debacle”. I know the word and its usage. Examples ..brexit, migrant processes, uk economy. Never heard it used in connection with second hand engines. Good luck with the strip down.
Christian, I feel your pain. I bought a Range Rover TDv8 recently sight unseen and immediately shoved it back into an auction once I looked it over! It was dreadful! I wish I could've found you an engine here in the UK and shipped it to you
OMG. Looking forward to the strip down. At least you have the 'bones' of a good engine and once you have rebuilt it, then it will be better than new. 👍As for content, I am sure your followers will also be happy watching DIY stuff too😁
I had a similar compression tester that also gave unfeasibly low readings (when i tried it on a vw petol engine that was in reasonable health). I reached the conclusion that because the schrader valve was located at the gauge end of the 'plumbing', the rubber hoses not only effectively increased the combusion chamber volume, but also flexed slightly under pressure. I consigned it to the 'what was I thinking' shelf, and bought a 'Laser Tools #2516', which has the valve at the sparkplug end of the hose, and which has (I suspect) a schrader valve core of the correct specification, rather than a standard tyre valve.
You guys can do any video about anything, and we will love it. You Vera, and You Christian the real reason we all love what you guys doing. / just one idea ; how about your son working with iron ? I would be love to see. / God Bless You guys.

I love your video's, very entertaining and I can learn something while watching! I also had the problen with the Chinese enginehoist and the engine stand. I did put pacer blocks (welded) between the castor wheels of the engine hoist so thelegs can go over the legs of the engine stand. It is not perfect, but better than it was before. I hope this tip can help you, keep up the good work, Martin from the Netherlands.
When I got a used engine for my broken D2 (gas) I did the compression test cold and warm as well as "wet" (added a few drops of oil into the cylinder). From the differences in pressure readings of the same cylinder you can draw some conclusions. Luckily my used engine was OK.
Crazy to see an engine from Ripon North Yorkshire. Literally where I’m from. I’m going to Paderborn this month and can’t wait to floor it on the Auto Bahn
I guess not having any holes in the block is at least a better starting point! Here's hoping between all the parts you have from both engines you can build a decent one 🫰
Having the oil cooler at the bottom of the Vee was a brilliant idea like having a starter in the Vee burred under the manifold. Great for passing emissions and fast warm ups, bad for oil longevity.

After your more than informative video on the subject of "used car parts dealers" in Germany/Europe.
We looked around for two weeks and then we bit the bullet and spend 8k. Christian
Great episode. New camera is definitely an improvement - much better contrast in low light.
Oh my god. You guys bought an engine at Wiens. That one is a gangster
May be this free movement didn’t go down well after all 🤷
Super content as usual C&V
Thank you both for the great content. I do hope the engine works out. I bought a remanufactured BMW e90 engine about 7 years ago for about 6k and it worked out wonderful, but that was from a company that specialised in engine repair.
Well Im selling used parts in UK off land rovers and theres 100% honesty in my business, you always got 30days warranty on anything you buy, also sending lots parts to europe and dont have any problems 100% positive feedback from customers
👍👌🙋♀️
They wouldn't have a channel if they had an OM642 vehicle . Nothing to fix .
@@stewatparkpark2933 Yep except for the oil cooler on the earlier engines. Otherwise a very boring subject.
@@davidsanderson6044 The earlier ones were better . Heavier timing chain , no DPF , no DEF .
@@davidsanderson6044 My Vito has done nearly 300,000 miles with none of those issues except for the oil cooler seals. My brother has a similar vehicle and his is also extremely reliable. I don't hold a candle for Merc, I think their customer care sucks but I can only speak as I find it.
I'm glad it's not only me, they treat you with so much contempt.
Sound like nice guys! I always arrive unannounced even with used car dealers so they can't have prepped anything before I get there
Thank you for another enthralling video, you two always make my Sunday complete. Kind regards from Perth Western Australia.
The audio on the new camera is so much better
I do like the DJI cameras as they are my choice over GoPro
Many car parts in UK come from stolen cars that are stripped for parts. And any low mileages quoted for parts are never true!
Hi both, your new camera is very good, it makes you sound German. LOL. Love you both guys, don't stop..
Another great video, cant wait for the tear vdown and rebuild. I,m in the uk and fear that used parts dealers here are the same as you describe. Ebay sellers will have a 'Manke Me an Offer' facility but then reject every offer below their stated proce🙄. Scrap Yards as they used to be known in the UK were intimidating places to visit, a friend visited such a place near Colchester for a VW Beatle rear light unit and when he pointed out that the price the guy was asking was actually more than a new one he snatched it back, called him a Saturday morning Tiddly Winks Player and told to f*ck Off🤣
My own experience has generally been beter though.
We do things like check our wormeries, make sure the car has not been stolen, kick litter out the way when walking the dog, read a newspaper designed for an 8 year old , drink lots of cheap fizzy alcoholic drinks, eat low value food and wash our rusty old cars with love!! ❤
@@simonmusgrovewethey Hi Simon this is merely a comical sketch, not ment to be offensive, but a fictional perspective of what a lifestyle might look like from Europe! Tally Ho
@@simonmusgrovewethey No worries Simon!
10:35 Vera's favorite word, again
Im paused at 4:12. Christian, Vera, you guys can talk about home renovations, or why you think the sky is blue. I'm telling you, I will watch.
😅👍🙏🙋♀️
Good morning Vera & Christian 😊 Another perfect viewing on a Sunday morning with a cup of tea 🫖 How the used car part companies suck 😫 But on the upside your videos show how things really are and that make your UA-cam videos the very best 👍🏻 Someone mention Rob & Chris about getting an engine as there channel is really good 👍🏻 Have a fantastic week and see you both next Sunday 😊 hug for Vera 🤗 xx Auf Wiedersehen
Try Gentlemen of Salvage, Axminster, England. I ahve always found them to be exceptionally helpful and honest.
another great video, love the new camera. good luck with the engine.
Viewers we need to do our bit for Christian and Vera as their channel is awesome. Subscribe but like and share as much as possible to push them out into the wider community. ❤ LR Time
This channel is so entertaining I need you guys to produce more content maybe allow other people to bring their land rover....... however it's a full time thing with 3 of them ❤❤
Thanks guys for another entertaining and informative video I don’t think dodgy parts dealers are unique to Germany we have them in the uk very dishonest profession!!!
Another great video guys . Looking forward to the rebuild of that engine. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼
It's a shame that engine numbers aren't simply recorded at every MOT or TÜV so they can be tied with the chassis and add some traceability without having a VRM. Still a brilliant video Christian and Vera. Maybe it's time to set up your own breakers yard
Great video guys. We call them wreckers in Australia. I think ours are friendlier, it depends on their demographics. Good luck guys.
Look forward to the next video, new camera much better.🤕
..
I wish I could've found you an engine here in the UK and shipped it to you
I've got my cup of tea ready❤ here we go for dodgy engines😮
When I was young my father always said never by a Landrover .over the years I grew to understand why.
We have a couple of amazing vehicle recycling companies in the UK, they stand out in a sea of sh1t!
I don’t own any LR product but have watched nearly all your videos 😂.
Keep it up you two, you have a huge following and it’s only going to get bigger ❤
Hey Christian and Vera,
I just saw a video on gapless second ring and dimpled pistons...you gotta check it out it's fascinating if you don't already know it.
Dave's auto shop....Monster engines.
Steve.
(not Steve from the plant.)
I cannot understand why you bought it without a comp test, given what you were saying they are theives .
surely there was someone else to deal with, love your content love the comments Just love your sarcasm WRT Land Rover , good luck with the re build🇦🇺
Brilliant video again from you both, I am slowly getting through all your films I find them so interesting and you keep the interest all the time with Christian's funny quirky comments. I am running a Disco 4 at the moment and every film gives me more to look at for future maintenance, I am all ready looking forward to seeing your next film, Many Thanks I love your films keep them coming
,
Wow. The video quality seems much better. Was gonna ask then the end you mentioned it. Kudos
I now want to see a video of Christian giving Vera some lessons in reversing the trailer, next time you go for your firewood forest run, please plan some lessons...
I could recommend Bowy from Yellow trading company in the Netherlands he does have specific Landrover parts and Engines .
Hi christian and vera.even if you put up content of sweeping the floor of your garage it would be still entertaining😊 this discovery 4 will be the best on the road.looking forward to the fitment of the engine😊😊😊
I stopped again at 6:39… my wife and I watch and talk about you both … I just put another comment to tell you that you’re not alone in this world to be what we call “normal humans”. Obviously you both know that but you need to hear, read 😅❤
I love watching this channel from Australia
I’ve been lucky so far with my 2013 d4 and I love it for towing my caravan
I feel your pain dealing with the used parts guys, it seems like a very unethical industry.
Absolutely correct, in Germany at least, as Christian says. German Ebay is full of them selling crap.
Just as bad in the UK. Strip thieves mostly. Only worse are the engine ‘rebuilders’ selling engines….
That was one of the reasons why i bought genuine shortblock for my 2010 SDV6 ... it was expensive but in long term much better choice than buying used engine with unknown history.
Argh! What a debacle. Vera you do a great job with the camera.
great video and content, 7k for a used engine seems like a high price , looking forward to next sunday.
Hopefully you bought a good one in my experience from 40 years of having to buy a second hand motor be it a motorcycle or car unless you actually have test driven it prior you are basically buying in good faith I have had good luck with my dealings with dark side lol 😂
It’s generally bought and fingers crossed 🤞 no arguments because the seller will say you installed incorrectly
Always a pleasure watching your endeavours ❤
Good Sunday to yeah 👍 tank yeah for making video buying another motor for a range Rover is not easy❤
Christian and very all i can say it is a good job you know what you are doing on a land rover and the best of luck with it in the past i have been robed in buying a gearbox ,thanks for the video
We do get around 2 weeks warranty on a engine from a car breakers over here just about time to get it in and started lol👍
Yes and they don’t pay the labour to fit and remove it, I say don’t touch used engines.
Absolutely correct Christian it's the same in the UK, second hand car part dealers from my experience know very little if anything at all about engines or transmissions they are just in it to make an easy buck
Thank you. Very informative.
Good vid. New camera is better. If the engine came from the UK it must be a good one 😉
Once again another fantastic video! You could really do a video about anything and it would still be great content. Can't wait to see this engine rebuild though.
Hi mate I understand how you feel I seen this so many times over the years I really hope
the engine is ok, take my advice just carm take a deep breath if anyone can sort it out can take care ❤👍 Barry
It’s a bit exciting a project like this.
Im sure you researched damaged cars with good engines. Im toying with putting an om606 engine in my Defender, as i can, as live in the UK, but i will be looking for an MOTd Mercedes so i can drive it for a few months to make sure all is good.
New camera is an improvement to your already excellent channel ❤
such a clever family i love you guys
Very clever and full of knowledge you both make a good team
Great video as always, as for ever getting your money back you’ve more chance of finding a landrover without a problem
DJ i action 4 great upgrade!
Hi, what ever you do do not give up your real job , as one day you will run out of Land rover running gear . In the mean time make more videos until the parts run out . 😉👍💅Another interesting video . 🤩
Hmm, what could possibly go wrong? Just the engine for me to tackle the Madigan Line.
