Sunday Breakfast time Been collecting drift wood since your previous Tanuki videos, I made a couple which I’m very happy with and this video has just set the creative juices flowing again.
Aussie Dave here Peter, nice work on the tanuki. 🤗. Since your first video on tanuki I have now 4, all junipers 😀😁. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 👍
Moving that branch from the right side to the left at the end of the video really opened it up to see that whole right side of the driftwood "trunk". Goes to show how one branch can change the whole feel of a tree.
I just searched for “bonsai,” and this is the first video I clicked on. This is excellent! Exactly what I was looking for. This explained so much, and now I can really imagine doing this some day.
Peter is not only a good bonsai master, he is also a great teacher. There are many bonsai experts on UA-cam but no one can simplify things like he does.
@@horanbenjamin I’ve binged like 5 of his videos now. He has such a nice presence, and seems to really want to share his knowledge and teach. I find his videos calming and super fascinating. I’m holding off on expanding my plant collection atm due to space and budgetary limits (I probably already have like 50 houseplants, but am always tempted to delve further into new kinds of plants, more plants). Some day I will start my own bonsai. In the meantime, I’ll keep learning from Peter
Isn't he wonderful? There's no other Bonsai instructor on youtube that's anything like him. He has such a lovely, calming presence, he's interesting, explains things in a matter of fact way and is just a joy to watch and learn from.
Sounds like it was raining when you were creating this video with Sheila. She seems to have a pretty good idea regarding what she would like to create and is just unsure of how to arrive at that destination.
I think after spending the time with you she will come away from the time with a better understanding how to be more creative in her bonsai care future.
Thanks for video, great, as usual. Maybe it would be interesting to know, that these tanuki animals, the racoon dogs, were brought to baltic in 1930s from far east and now are most common forest inhabitants. They used to come to gaedens in autumn to pick fallen apples
Your videos are very inspiring. I hope I get to your level of Love for bonsai. I do have a Question, can you start bonsai with Sycamore? I thought you may know of A great anecdote for the sycamore
Personally I think bonsai wire works much better for this than the cable tie, easier to adjust & better at blending in with the plant. I have a question, a wood will rot & disintegrate with time. Why dont you put a lime sulphur on the driftwood before styling? What do you think about Polyurethane coating as an alternative to lime sulphur for bonsai?
Hi Peter. I have a Frazer fir Christmas tree with roots. Can I plant it in a mesh pot and dig it up next year or must it go in the ground with no mesh pot
Great video. A little off topic but I've been really interested in these japanese maples that are variegated and reticulated and I was wondering why is it that barely any of the types of japanese maples are almost never used in bonsai? I've yet to see even 1 of them. These maples are soo exotic I'm wondering do u have any bonsai trees like this? If so I'd love to see the types and varieties that could be used for bonsai. Thanks !
Chris - I have often wondered about this too and can only think that the Japanese dont use variegated maples because there is no tradition for doing so. Japanese people are very much bound by tradition, so anything that deviates from tradition is not done. This is just my theory but could be wrong. I wonder if anybody reading this has any views on this interesting topic.
@@peterchan3100 well Peter my other maple buddy on UA-cam says it could be because they grow too slow and they are seen as too flashy. I was thinking maybe because the leaves are too big on some of these maples but can't u get smaller leaves if u defoliate? Either way I feel they deserve a chance and I'm going to start some of these maples on a bonsai journey! I'm currently looking at shigi no hoshi and amagi shigure. Thanks for the reply ,maybe we can see these in the future 😀 such beautiful trees
Morning all , coffee drunk , now going out to flush koi filter and work on one of my Bonsai , Thank you Peter, Can you make a tanuki with an acer , cant recall seeing any ,is it only evergreen trees?
Do whatever makes u happy try and if u like it keep if not oh well? Even though the point of bonsai is 2 recreat nature your the one who has 2 live with your creation. not I!!! lol even tho I so did some roots over hydrangea with a cedar tree I found and dug up. I had some 30 or 40 y.o. hydrangeas my neighbor needed dug up so I potted 1 and wired the cedar 2 it🤷🏽♂️ we shall c
@@DavidJones-ty1ht interesting that combination . I think I will have a go as I have some nice drift wood . might look horrible but as you say I have to live with it, I had an acer that was very old and it over the years had wrapped itself around and old climbing rose that had died .it was in our garden for 19 years, then we moved so it might not be there now, it looked ok .
@@timdady4660 these are both still living I have them n my cold frame 4 our mild winter. But I plan on training the hydrangea wide n low then the cedar will look like rising from the flowers....I'm excited even tho it probably won't flower till 2023
J'espère que le bois mort aura été préalablement traité avec le liquide à jin? Sinon il faudra le faire assez rapidement pour éviter le pourrissement !?😱
Terrible. I think Peter should have told the lady that this wouldn’t work with this type of dead wood the dead wood will rot within the next couple years and the poor lady will wonder what happened to her tree
? Tanuki don't last forever anyway. Since it has grown for a few years it won't really be a tanuki anymore. I'm not sure why this bothers you so much, though. Everything is transitory in the grand scheme of things and she wanted to try tanuki.

Good Coffee morning to you! Hello Peter, so, Tanuki! Excellent, what a beautiful morning for so many reasons.
You on drugs.
I am a young lawyer and your videos bring me so much joy and peace after work. You are my favorite channel!
Thank you - that's nice to know.
Very awesome video TY for sharing
This is exactly what i need to see, i just discovered a dead rose bush that has decayed into basically deadwood that would be perfect for this!
Thank You again for sharing your experience with us, great videos. Thank You
Best and beautiful tanuki bonsai

Wonderful to see! Very inspiring.
🌿Nice trickery Pete! 🌳✌..
In 700 years that will be one beautiful tree
So so sweet and adorable
Thank you for your comment 👍

Hello Sunday Morning Bonsai Breakfast Club. ☕️
Nearly first.
Maybe next week I will slow down a little for you my fellow breakfast club member 👍
Can you make tanuki like that without treating the dead wood with the jin liquid? Also in time could you reduce the root ball so it is less "proud" ?
So interesting. Cannot wait to try this. Thank you for the video.
Another very nice tree sir!
waaaaw😲😲😲😲😲

The insufficient hands problem - maybe hold the driftwood steady in a vice or table clamp?
Lovely...😘😘😘👌👍
Peter should upload a video of just rain hitting his greenhouse
Your ears are very sensitive
Really beautiful. It is artistry with living plants you do and I love every second of watching you do it! Thank you for sharing!

Wow 🤩 Beautiful
What a talented man
I’m attempting to make a tanuki using false cypress drift wood and a silver maple.
interesting using a maple, have you any pictures as I was thinking of trying using maple/acer but i have never seen a picture of one

What do you think about Polyurethane coating as an alternative to lime sulphur for bonsai?
I will try both lime sulphur and epoxy coating in spring, to see what becomes
When will you be doing the video on the beech trees ?
Very soon,
@@peterchan3100 thank you Peter can’t wait
2 hands plus teeth =3 hands Mr. Chan!!! Lol
Can you use crushed natural stones for bonsaisoil
No
@@peterchan3100 ok thank you
so the wood for tanuki doesnt have to be the same as type of tree?
Will the ’deadwood’ not ultimately rot or do u treat it with something to prevent that happening ?
.
It will after many years.
Thanks for your programming. Have you ever done anything with Banyan trees?
Difficult tree to use as leaves are too large - yes, I have done a few in India.
🔥💕👍
Hi Peter.
I have a Frazer fir Christmas tree with roots. Can I plant it in a mesh pot and dig it up next year or must it go in the ground with no mesh pot
No need for the mesh but you may need to leave it in the ground for a couple of years to have any benefit of the trunk thickening

you mentioned the driftwood could rot, which type of wood will make the best driftwood and not rot? Thanks for the video :)
Juniper, Box, and many of the tropical hardwoods are good.
Nice Video!! Are you planning to make a Video about jades?
No - I keep telling you folks that we cannot get Jades here, so I dont have the material to demonstrate on.
Tanuki, trickery, being very much alive while surrounded by death
Nice way of putting it - I will use this analogy the next time I talk about Tanuki
When.can.you foliage a holly bush
Nice video but i have one question. do you have a chestnut bonsai?
I have done several, just trawl through my old videos

All bonsais evolve over time. That's part of the beauty of this hobby.
