    Speaking of good shovels for digging out trees, a great one is called the root slayer shovel. It's got a really sharp tip and a saw integrated into the spoon part. It slices right through roots like there not even there. Still will need a recip saw but it makes the digging part way easier

    My biggest takeaway from this video was to “keep what you like, and shed the rest”.
    And I’ll say it every video I watch, my garden trees are looking better and better thanks to you

      @@bonsaiheirloom I’m having fun! I’m having a hard time learning that my “bonsai” styled garden trees need to be trimmed so differently to get a thick trunk and small leaves, compared to my privacy trees that I just care about foliage and height. You’re helping me more than I can express.

    Many of the pictures I see of perfect bonsai I find a bit redundant. Having lived amongst mature forests my predilection is to best recreate an artistic version of those trees. I’m impressed with the craft of a refined bonsai but I guess I like “ugly” trees more. I think it’s obvious when someone’s influence is other bonsai as opposed to wild trees.

      Yes, I tend to like "ugly" trees too! I prefer my bonsai have a raw look, emulating the wild trees in nature.

    You make a good point about the age of bonsai. If I understand correctly, what matters is the age of the tree under bonsai care. I think bonsaists want a tree to look aged, but perhaps the botanical age or age under care doesn't matter.
    Do you know the bonsai of Dan Robinson at Elandan Garden in Bremerton WA? Some of his trees are botanically ancient. My impression is that the two of you would be simpatico in terms of the size and rough style of trees. Another element of appreciation is the setting in which bonsai are displayed. His garden and your lovely garden enhance the impression trees make.

    Would you ever bonsai a fruit tree to maintain size in a particular pot?
    I bonsai (ed) a Japanese Maple to maintain its size in a pot, and it did well.
    So would you agree bonsai isn’t just for esthetics? However you can attain both function and beauty.
    Love your show.

    You spoke about cutting the roots around a yamadori in order to push more feeder roots. When is this performed? When will I know it is effective and can dig out the entire tree?

    • @MiltonChang-ee6rq
      @MiltonChang-ee6rq 3 місяці тому +2

      You can cut a part of the root at any time...since there are enough rest of the roots to feed the tree. If you worry about it, wait more than 6 months and at cooler season....remember to cut back tht ope to match root loss.

    I will agree that bonsai is a craft but what really makes it art is when it takes the viewer it of the moment and the rest of the world disappears from that moment. That’s what made the difference between a decent grade and a solid A with my graduate student.

      I was definitely not a top student in graduate school. I am working on an artical on success...Hope we can exchange ideas.

    I just started in Bonsai and watched most of your videos. In most bonsai starterkits you have a Flametree, Plaisandertree or so. I also didn't see a Cherrytree or Wisteria. Are there any problems with these trees?
