He was the best rock drummer ever. But not because of the solos. It was his POWER speed groove and subtlety behind the brutality that made him the best!
Lot of roadies back in the day said they had never seen broken drum skins, other than the bass drum or due to an accident while loading or unloading them. Apparently Bonham hit the skins so hard he often would rip a skin on the snare or a tom drum.
Geez..... 🤦♀️ You have to watch this one live. You can’t appreciate the talent of John Bonham on this track unless you see it.....you just won’t believe it! No doubt.... he was The GOAT. We need a do over please
"It's the drums you beat with your hands." You are correct, sir. Bonham's entire kit was "drums (he) beat with (his) hands." As others have said, you gotta see this live to appreciate it.
During this solo, he would play with his hands on the drums, sometimes the drum rims would cut his fingers but he'd keep going. Here's the link for a live performance from the Royal Albert Hall. Sometimes, in later years, the drum solo could last a half hour. ua-cam.com/video/r9-42mu1D9Y/v-deo.html
I have know idea how much of this is truth or legend, but I used to work part time at a sound studio in the 90's, and I've heard from different sources over the years, that Bonham is, at least in part, responsible for the creation of the double foot peddle for the bass drum. Not that he developed it for himself, but that he was so fast with all his drumming but especially his feet, that other drummers just couldn't get that double bass sound Bonham achieved, without a bass drum peddle that hit twice for every time you stepped on it.
Bonzos live drum solos were legendary.moby dick was 19 mins of pure genius.14 mins of bonzo alone.he does use sticks & hands at the same time.his foot pedals were awesome. As ur reaction was sick, the live version will blow ur mind..
Yeah normally that would be an additional percussionist in a band and I've played in bands with that situation. But now that was fucking Bonzo just playing the drums with his hands and of course he did bring that kick in at the end and you have to understand back then man the kick was a bit more difficult to operate than it is nowadays like everything else the technology has evolved a lot. The guy was just a fucking beast.
If you think Bonham was sick there....listen to the LIVE version of Moby Dick from THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME 1976. And he WAS INDEED using his hands...not the sticks...in the beginning and middle section of the solo.
You are slowly becoming a Led Head, haha. John Bonham may not be the most technical drummer. But he did pave the way for all to follow. His masterful musicianship and his abilities to allow Jimmy Page to go off in any direction then be right there to pick up whenever need be. With his single bass drum triplets, his power and thunder. It could only be duplicated using a duel bass drum by all others to follow. Just another reason that Led Zeppelin is the greatest band to ever grace the stage. Doing things that have never been done before. To try and copy greatness was the level that zeppelin set. Being the first band to innovate such a radical change in music.well just another reason why they were then and will always be the greatest band ever. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery!!!!
If I'm not mistaken, John dropped his sticks during this song and he did play a little with his hands till he got his sticks back. Professional didn't miss a beat lol.
While this was pretty good there are many excellent drummers in many styles. Gene Krupa was an excellent drummer from a generation before John that you should give a listen too.
John Bonham liked and learned from Krupa and Art Blake, we all stand on their shoulders... anyone want to see some aggressive drum playing, check out those guys, legends.
It's so subjective to claim a "BEST" ... Bonham is my favorite but there were way more technical guys, but his composition and attitude add to his appeal too.
Fact zeppelin songs sound better with a drummer lol. I started with guitar and now play drums they sound soooo much better with bass and especially drums they add so much to the sound
Godsmack does a Drum Battle where the lead singer, Sully goes against the band’s drummer in a battle. Moby Dick is one of the songs in the drum battle. It’s awesome. If you haven’t heard it, you should do yourself a favor and watch and listen. Great reaction.
He didn't "drop his sticks", he plays with his hands just as a different technique during the solo.
You're gonna LOVE the Live version of this! 🤘🔥
Agreed Live is a must hear and see.
Don’t think ever dropped a thing when it came to his kit
Guarantee baby Bonzo can do this exact...
"drop his sticks" might be an expression for switching to playing by hand.
I believe so...I was responding to a specific post cheers!

Brutality, indeed.
Oh no 🤦♀️, this is one you have to see live version. One of the most epic drum solos ever. Please, we wouldn’t lie...
Geez..... 🤦♀️ You have to watch this one live. You can’t appreciate the talent of John Bonham on this track unless you see it.....you just won’t believe it! No doubt.... he was The GOAT. We need a do over please
He presses on the drum skins to change the pitch too... you'll see that in the live video... 🥁
watch the live Moby Dick version and you'll see him playing without sticks! not the whole song but you'll get the point.
Bonzo was a monster with grace... my biggest influence on the drums, a fan since I was either 4 or 5 years old.

I think he was going for an epic and classic drum solo. It was one man fighting and beating the drums while the others stood back. I think he won.
Oh yeah some Led for Our Heads, Thanks. Enjoy this masterpiece.

The last 5 seconds of that song was the set up for 'Bring It On Home'!
When they name the absolute coolest muppet after you, that's when you know you are the cream of the crop.
A drumming virtuoso!

The only drum solo I really enjoy.
He's doing it with his hands
You definitely need to watch the live video and you’ll see him play with his hands
If you think Bonham was sick there....listen to the LIVE version of Moby Dick from THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME 1976. And he WAS INDEED using his hands...not the sticks...in the beginning and middle section of the solo.
John Bonham is absolutely the best drummer of all times just as Led Zeppelin is the best band of all times.
Two hands,two feet.
5:55 well God damn......sounds like a TRIPLE machine gun......Oh yes

That’s his standard drumset, he’s playing with hands and fingers
You should listen to Toad by Cream from the album Fresh Cream another drum solo just as good
Playing his drum kit with his hands...
If I'm not mistaken, John dropped his sticks during this song and he did play a little with his hands till he got his sticks back. Professional didn't miss a beat lol.

He is playing with his hands
btw he was playing with his hands
And to think he was 20 years old doing this....
He's using his hands on the drum set at times instead of sticks. Not bongos..
Fact zeppelin songs sound better with a drummer lol. I started with guitar and now play drums they sound soooo much better with bass and especially drums they add so much to the sound
Regular drums, no sticks.
Why did your mom name you bizmatic?
😃 good question!
Her plan worked, her baby boy is famous now, so the name worked!

Your wrong. He's playing with his hands.
Nope your wrong it's all hands 😂
Another reaction to THE WRONG VERSION! Ya gotta do the video. . . . . This has to be SEEN to be believed. Also, it's a longer performance.
Lousy non drummer picks the least impressive drumming from a much longer solo
