It’s good practice, and most manufacturers require it. You can do without it but it’s not recommended at all and can allow wind to pull the shingles up on the gables.
When nailing a shingle at the edge of the roof, do you need to nail a certain distance away from the edge of the shingle to avoid water wicking under the edge and following the nail down?

ive done idk a hundred or so roof jobs. mostly new construction. that was like 15 years ago. started helping a friend reroof his house. it had a split roof in the back. 2 seperate pitches that meet. Never had that before. roofing buddy said to step downwards to the eave, then work left to edge normally. worked great. Too bad every other aspect of this roofing job was a shitshow from the start. my fault for forgetting a few things at the start. but i have a question. If a house is not actually square, peak and gables are not perfectly 90°, do chalk lines fail by default? not 1 chalk line stayed true. starter strip lines were off. split peak line was not parallel with the roof peak despite careful measuring/marking. the 3 tab shingles we used, often times 1 bundle was cut slightly taller or shorter than other bundles, and none of the shingles had the precuts at the ends, so easy placement was not a thing. had to use a tape to line up EVERY DAMNED shingle. (not a small roof to be sure). so yea, can a house thats not square, completely screw with ...everything? i have never been so frustrated with a job in my life. 1 storey bungalow with a small addition about 1 square in size. 55 bundles, plus all the prep, 1 nailer gun, and 2 helpers with zero experience, we started LAST FRIDAY lol. short by like 5 shingles, and hardware store closed just before we arrived to buy more. last row of shingles on Slope A, step flashing around chimney, and tar the lead flashing after, is all thats left, but this is probably the most embarrasing job ive ever done. None if the tabs line up straight from bottom to top, on the side facing the street. the back was perfect for a while. and it just veered up or down, all attempts to fix it by placing the next shingle down in a compensating way didnt work. chasing the rain away forced us to not undo half a roof. lol. ugh. anyhoo...carry on. ur better than i at this stuff
killwalker 2019 thanks for commenting! So if the problem you were having was the roof being out of square, especially with 3 tabs that can be a tricky thing to fix especially if you want the roof to actually look good. Architectural shingles are very forgiving and easy to adjust. Always measure from the ridge down to eaves and in the worst case scenario start your first course by dropping lower on one end of the eaves to ensure squareness from the start. The gutters should hide this little blemish and the rest of the 3 tabs will look great!
@@YourAverageRoofer Thanks for replying so quickly. i wish that i could send photos to the comment section. would be nice to know ahead of time if the roof will be at the very least, Functional and sealed
@@YourAverageRoofer sent some pics for critiquing. include any into ur vids if you like. You can do a "what happens if you start a roof incorrectly" video 😂😂. quick question. Eavestrough. water gets behind and under then drips down across the bottom of the front of the gutter the whole way during heavy rain. Home owner thinks drip edge should stop that altogether. I have explained that the edge of the metal at the back of the gutter is not snug up against the eaves. water dripsdown the drip edge. follows the path of least resistance and goes into the back of the gutter. drip edge has to overhang the edge. shingles overlap that. water travels over and under the shingles onto and/or past the drip edge, which is a few inches back from the outside lip of the gutter. aside from nailing the gutter to the eaves and caulking it, what can be done to make "ALL rain flow into and never outside of the gutters. basically they want the water to not drip over the patio entryway. Thanks a bunch. im really hoping this roof is functional. we just got doused in 11 minutes of heavy rain and winds, just before exposing the peak for the ridge vent. gutters in the back were practically useless. but apparently no water got into the attic, and the felt was exposed, 2 inches+ wide, and 34 feet long. lined up....not really no. functional...seems so. minus the gutters. Sorry for my long speak. ima geek. take care. loving this discourse.
It would be really great if you could make a video on how to properly stagger architectural style shingles on the side of a cottage style roof. It seems that staggering them in 3 equals causes a lot of ends to align since the side sort of causes for lack of better term..a moving target.
@@YourAverageRoofer oh okay..ill give it a try tomorrow. Couldnt get up there 2day. It seems the weather knows im off so its raining here in Sudbury constantly. Snows a comin soon...gotta get her done up.
Not all shingles lay that way. Theirs a 3 part step a 5 inch step or three tabs a 6 inch rack. Presedentual 3 part shingles have to lay out from left to rite and have to be laid exactly to the dimensions

@@mikeclark5421 gd to know. Thanks. I guess i got lucky with these cuz cuttin them in thirds worked great for not having seams one on top of the other or nails too close to edge.
Good job man! When i get to the end i'll flip a shingle around and put it flush to the rake starter and then cut it from the inside and flip it back around, i personally think it's a little easier then cutting at the rake shingle by shingle or snapping a line down it and then cutting, if it's a little short the rake will still be straight because of the starter and if it's a tad long just grab a cut off and sand paper it lol, nonetheless either way works.. keep up the good quality work bro!
Ryan Annear stilletto is a good hammer due to low vibrations in the shaft and very light weight. I personally don’t like them as I like using the weight of my hammer to drive mails, the stilletto forces you to use more of your own strength.

ive done idk a hundred or so roof jobs. mostly new construction.
that was like 15 years ago.
started helping a friend reroof his house.
it had a split roof in the back.
@@YourAverageRoofer Thanks for replying so quickly. i wish that i could send photos to the comment section. would be nice to know ahead of time if the roof will be at the very least, Functional and sealed
killwalker 2019 you can email me at YourAverageRoofer@gmail.com
Super useful video man, great job
It would be really great if you could make a video on how to properly stagger architectural style shingles on the side of a cottage style roof. It seems that staggering them in 3 equals causes a lot of ends to align since the side sort of causes for lack of better term..a moving target.
I can definitely do a video on that. The best method is one full shingle, 2/3 of a shingle, 1/3 of a shingle and repeat
@@YourAverageRoofer did it in thirds like u suggested...worked mint! Thank you. Did my garage right afterward which was a regular roof and followed the manufacturers instructions.. and it wiorked great too. U really helped me out man! Thanks. Btw..i find way less waste on these new shingles. U can cut them any length and not notice it from the road. The old ones had to be cut in a specific spot. Anyhow.. thanks again from sudbury. (No leaks yet) 🤟🤟
Jeffery Demoss that’s how I normally do it myself as well
How do you like the stiletto, thinking of buying one but want someone else's input that has used one.
Ryan Annear stilletto is a good hammer due to low vibrations in the shaft and very light weight. I personally don’t like them as I like using the weight of my hammer to drive mails, the stilletto forces you to use more of your own strength.
@@YourAverageRoofer thanks for such a quick response buddy! I'm a roofer myself and am currently using a steel hatchet that I love. For the price it doesn't seem worth it, plus I cant seem to be able to order a stiletto from anywhere reliable lol. Thanks again man
Ryan Annear no problem, the only thing nice about the stilletto is the weight. Easy to carry in a pouch all day. In my opinion that’s about it 😂
I have a problem with the 6 inch shingle in windy regions, cant it be replaced for a better cut by removing the second last shingle to fit the last so its bigger... they always fly off and i like them big and it only takes extra time that everyone doesnt seem to have....
Great videos but I’m adding a garage to the house, how do I tie into the existing roof to match?
1" in from the edge .
12" in and 12" again then 1" in from the end
FOUR NAILS.
6 NAILS FOR STEEP ROOFS OR IF YOUR HOUSE IN ON THE WATER.
Eamon Augustine
I actually show my nailers/workers that the hammer their using measures about 12 to 13 inches long.
Lay that down from the edge of the shingle and that’s where you nail in the centre of the shingle .
Thank you so much for sharing this information I learned how to apply roof shingles to my dog house for the very first time. 🐕 💜🙌🏾
Great, simple and to the point. Thanks
Good video but what about shiners on the ends if u dont want them visible from underneath
Great video. What nail size do you recommend if I use 7/16 OSB ? Thank you
You may use one use 1 inch, however 1-1/4 is highly recommended for most roofing applications
Thank you for your fast replay. I have some 11/2. Do you think that they will stick out to much? Thank you
For the ridge cap do I need longer nails? Thank you
Doing the roof on my chicken coop. No experience roofing. This was a perfect video to watch. I didn’t need anything complicated, and you got straight to the point. 👍
Agree totally. First time roofer of a new shed. Just needed the straight dope. Strong work!
You explain it so good great job
So what do you put after that small little shingle at the top if you still have a long way until you get to the ridge cap?
You start your staircase again with a full shingle and repeat the pattern
Well done looking for a refresher .Great video
You have the best videos! Thanks for all of the info! Do you have any pipe replacement vids?
Great Video! Question: Why do you have to stagger the shingles instead of going across in rows?
Don’t want your seams to line up.
Hey I think I'm lost on why you have 5 different starter lengths for each row. I would have thought it would just alternate like bricks. Can you help me out here, I'm doing my garage this weekend.
This is called a pyramid stagger and all architectural shingles call for this pattern as to fulfill manufacture specifications.
The block like pattern is used for 3 tab shingles only! Hope this helps
@@YourAverageRoofer Thank you!
What nail are you using? How do you prevent it from poking down under the sheathing?
All nails poke through the sheathing. That’s intended to happen to insure you have a 3/4 inch penetration on your substrate.
Do you ever cut a bunch of starters on the ground and then set them on the roof and go for it?
Great videos - very helpful!
Great video, thank you for the helpful information.
Just to make sure I understand correctly, you only do the 5 step one time and the rest is full length shingles that you install?
Hi wondering can I use the nails with the red tabs on them
So my roofing gun is crap! I also have gone to using a hammer for now as I do roof repairs again. Any advice if I were to buy new pneumatic air gun? or should I buy electric if they exist?
