    Obviously this is a Short video, so they might’ve delved into this, but it feels like an incomplete thought. Addiction stems from a need for escapism. That ties into your emotional state/awareness, sure, but it’s *caused* by external factors, not internal. That’s why you can get addicted to anything, and it doesn’t help that blatantly addictive consumables are super accessible and even advertised in the name of profits, foregoing human care. If we look at what makes escapism such a necessity in our world (our economic and labor structures, our lack of community and fostering on hyper-individualist mindsets, discrimination and lack of inclusion, etc.) and tackled those root issues, that’d be biggest thing we could do in the fight against addiction. It is not people’s intrinsic characteristics that make them susceptible to addiction; there wouldn’t be such intense escapism if we didn’t live in a world that caused the *need* for it. It’s better to channel energy in changing a bad system then to simply navigate it.
    That said, meditation is great lol

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese Рік тому

      Ehh, maybe we have somewhat different connotations for the idea of "escapism", but I really wouldn't agree that addiction consistently boils down to that motivation. I think that's often a major piece of it, but that the drive toward substance use/dependency comes from a wide variety of complex and dynamic motivations that interplay on each other. Escapism is probably a major part of the cycle especially as someone's life becomes more and more affected by addicted behavioral patterns, but I don't think it's universally causal of the process for everyone.
      But again, maybe you mean the term in a broader/more abstract way than the way I'm interpreting it. I guess I could see the idea of self-medicating-to-become-more-mindful-and-comfortable-with-confronting-reality being argued to be a kind of "escape" from the experience of preexisting illness, for instance.
      Totally agree with everything else you said, though, about addiction NEVER being a function of inherent character traits or true deliberate will, and about societal-scale chronic trauma being what we need to examine in order to heal society's addiction problems at the root-iest of root causes. Amen af to all that
