The hype from the community around these knives or their persistent staying power made me think that they’d be great EDC/field knives. Of the list I gave, my favorites were the PM2 and Spydiechef. That said, I opted for the Kapara from Spyderco instead, because I felt it had the best of those two designs.

I’ll add one to this list. Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight. I’d overlooked it for a while but when I saw the S110V version in stock I had to snag it. It has dominated my rotation since it came in. Hair popping sharp out of the box and fits my giant hands nicely. Smooth action out of the box, perfect centering, zero blade play, solid lockup. Breaking down boxes yesterday it went through them like butter. Still hair popping sharp. I just strop it at the end of the day.

The Carter feels great in-hand, has a sturdy and sharp blade, and it completely took the place of the Bugout that was in my pocket before.

Great vid! Some hidden treasures there! My favorite underrated knife is the Kizer Catshark. Detent style “lock” with flipper (like the Small Archaeo) AND it spidie-flicks like a dream, so the fidget factor is off the charts. The large finger choil makes this tiny guy a full 4-finger grip for the average hand. The full belly goes thru cardboard like butter. The M690 steel holds a very respectable edge and and it’s easy (fun almost) to sharpen. Great looking black micarta handle with an orange pivot ring. And only $79! I think I just talked myself into buying another one.

Brisa/Enzo (I knew them as Enzo when I was last active in knife space circa 2010) make great knives and they were, at the time, really responsive to criticism and would change ergonomic and other issues fairly quickly. For instance, at one point the deep-carry clip on the Birk was mounted near the middle of handle making it a serious hotspot and rather defeating the point of the deep-carry clip.
Enzo/Brisa made fixed blades (including blanks for aspiring knifemakers), a two-hand opening slipjoint and a linerlock, then added in a lockback, etc in both Scandi and full-flat blade geometries and a couple of knife steels.
On the budget end there were EKA of Sweden and Mora of Sweden (now Morakniv) and Martinni (sp?), while the high-end fixed and occasionally folding were Karesuando, Helle, etc.

I own multiple James Brand knives and they are really well designed, but they price them like premium products only without premium materials. The Carter originally had 9Cr steel but they upgraded to VG-10 a few years ago after customer complaints, and raised the price a small amount. I've just realized that they are essentially taking a page out of Apple's marketing book, so I guess I can cut them some slack, but I still take issue with selling a $400 knife for $600 (The Barnes)

Well, purely because of your efforts, guys, I am now officially an admirer of the James Brand Carter and Carter XL. I've been having a strangely hard time buying a seriously premium folder. I figured it was time to pick and enjoy one but have had more than one disappointment with uncentered blades, dirty scales, rough action, just bad quality control generally. That Carter caught my eye with that gentle Loveless arc from the tip to the back end of the handle and the subtle handsomeness generally. No more expensive than any pretty nice knife, I suppose not the high-end steel du jour, but such a premium vibe. If you don't get approving nods from your buds when you pull this out to open a bag of jerky, get buds with better taste. 😅

I think the Badlands was extremely easy to pass over, it had VERY similar lines to several previous models…just kind of a cookie cutter knife in their line up. It’s not a bad knife at all and the materials are perfect for the price, just sort of mundane in their lineup. Staying with Civivi though, I think the Pintail is definitely underrated! Really great materials and action, spot on price point…remove the flipper and it has even better ergonomics! Runner up would be the Real Steel H6 Blue Sheep edition…highly underrated hard use knife!

I just bought a Kubey Knife (KU219)with Aus 10 Japanese steel with stainless steel liners and G10 scales for $60. This knife has some impressive workmanship with ball bearing flipper system. Great video... but no bloopers? 😁

I really like the look and blade shape of the Hogue rescue. Might need to save up and pick it up since it's above my standard purchase amount.

The Rambler is the super-sweet-spot between the Classic and the Mini Champ (original)!!! I have one with Warhawk scales that I EDC.

The taiga was the knife I bought when I traveled and needed a knife at my new location. It worked great. I have it to a family member before heading back on the plane

The Watu is a very interesting piece. I have it's older brother, the Chokwe, and really enjoy the blade shape. My only wish was for a more contoured wooden handle like the fix blade that it was inspired by.

    I _love_ my Badlands Vagabond.
ETA: OMG I love the Taiga too. Bought a second, I love it so much, and probably going to get another BV too.

The Real Steel Terra is super underrated in my opinion. Great blade shape that comes to a super thin edge. Awesome design from Poltergeist Works, more knows for the Luna, that I’d love to see a mini version come down the line.
