England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, each known as countries in their own right and all tiny places compared to the states of America or the countries across Europe. But what they lack in size they make up for in history, mystery and legends. Without exception all four countries boast hundreds of creepy tales, some relatively new and others dating back centuries, in this video we look at just five of the many spine chilling British myths and legends.

I’m Scottish and I can tell you that Skara Brae is not an island, nor is it an abandoned 12th century village, it’s the remains of a Neolithic settlement, which is over 5000 years old.
He didnt say it was an Island
But a Neolithic settlement on the Isle of Orkney!
The story of the Ravens of the Tower is very interesting. Ravens, like crows, are extremely intelligent birds and may even understand their role better than you may suppose.

I live in Falmouth but have never heard of the owl man! Cool to hear some Cornish history from my favourite channel 😊
The story of the Lantern Men bears an eerie resemblance to the Hawaiian legend of the Nightmarchers or the 'huaka'i po'. They're a vanguard of ancient warrior ghosts who were cursed to forever wander through the night, sometimes accompanied by Hawaiian gods and goddesses, floating in the air fully armored in warrior garb. The first published account of them was in 1883, but sightings are believed to go back centuries and even persist today. Ethereal glowing lanterns, oli chants and the pounding of pahu drums heralded their approach. Unlike their English counterparts, the Nightmarchers aren't limited to one location. They've been reported all over Hawaii, from Nu’uanu Pali State Wayside to the island of Molokai. They appear during adverse weather conditions, bringing with them an eerie fog. Just one glimpse of them would meant that you would die and your spirit would join their ranks in eternal marching. To survive, you had to lie with your eyes closed, face on the ground and pretend to be dead until they passed you by.

Irdk what sounds no more terrifying, a 5ft “owl man” or a 5.5ft legitimate freaking *owl.* I just hope to see neither. Dude, owls are creepy as sh⟟⟊!!

This one was great!
🇬🇧 In the mid 1970s, my friend & I planned a 4/5 week trekking holiday, Island hopping, up in the
Outer Hebrides off Scotlands west coast.
We had a brilliant stay in hostels, pubs & B&Bs & the Island people were very welcoming & friendly
Especially as my friend & I lived very near the Scottish/English borders, we have affinity with the Scots.
I fell in love with the Isle of
Benbecula, a tiny island with alot of sheep & a small Army base.
One night we went for stroll along an isolated, desolate, wind swept beach.
The Atlantic in front of us.
It was so beautiful with the full moon shining a pathway over the
Ocean & it was so quiet
Then, very oddly we heard this plaintive sad music, rising & falling.
We knew we were no where near a pub or a house, there was nothing that could account for this sad refrain.
Then as we walked nearer to the shoreline, we saw some rocks or dark boulders & the music/ humming, was coming from there.
We stood stock still & saw what we thought we two people behind the rocks looking out to the waves & all we could see were the backs of their heads.
Then the music took on the sound of ethereal singing or humming
We grasped each other in fear as there was something very wierd about this.
We tentatively took a few steps towards the rocks when both the heads turned rapidly towards us.
We couldnt make out any features only dark hair with white ovals showing.
I mean, you could see suggestions of eyes & mouth but it was blurred.
Then to our utter horror, the heads took off!!! 😨
Two large birds with wide wingspan lifted off the rocks & the worst part was that we could still see the human sized heads
They were like Heads with wings attached!
We were too shocked to scream & turned & ran back the way we'd come, then hiked inland to the little pub we were boarded at.
When we burst through the pub doors, exhausted, white faced &
In shock, the landlord sat us down & poured us this mixture of
Port & Brandy ( in the one glass)
Said it was good for shock!
Well it steadied us until we could speak again & we told of what we'd seen.
The landlord & a couple of guests granted " lock in" privileges
Nodded sagely & said they were Sirens or Sea Harpies & against popular belief that they were bad omens, the Islanders said we'd been honoured to hear & see them & our lives would be blessed.
Well, im 70yrs now, ive had a charmed life, with children & grandchildren, successful career
& very happy with no misfortune.
My friend also did well in life
Izzy moved to America & worked in fashion design, had a good business & had a good marriage, kids, grandkids, the full whack.
We kept in touch over the years & often talked of that night on Benbecula.
Neither of us were drunk or on any substances, just good broth & bread for supper & bracing sea air.
The landlord told us, the only stipulation on seeing the Sea Harpies was that we never return to the island again.
We left the next day,
Despite often wondering if we should go back to the Isle or any of the Outer Hebrides... we have not!
We never wanted to chance it.
The Outer Hebrides are truely wonderful & unspoilt & make a marvellous holiday! Just be careful about midnight strolling on deserted beaches.

The Nuckalavee is my favorite monster from British folklore. I remember reading about it as a kid and found it morbidly interesting
We have a local Lanternman legend here is the US. It is very well known in the community that he wanders around by. The videos we have uploaded of people seeing our local lanternman are our most popular videos. Maybe lanternman legends are more of a global phenomena
One of my parents lives in the Fens. Even they're a bit superstitious about whistling at night when walking the dog!

The reason the Ravens don't leave the Tower of London is because their wings are clipped...

Per the current Ravenmaster they are no longer clipped, so individuals can (and have) left. Not for very long though.
I think the owl drawing resembles that more of a Harpy Owl. 🦉 That creature is absolutely monstrous in size.. comparable to a bald eagle.

Only thing more fun for me to learn about then creepy urban legends is creepy internet legends or websites and maybe "cursed" pictures and videos.
Though i have to say that, in my opinion, the old legends are the scariest. They just dont make them like that anymore.

My granny and I (both Scottish) always told/tell people not to whistle as night as it calls willow of the whisps to you. I also know of Aborignal and Native American tribes and cultures throughout Asia and Africa that also believe whistling at night calls in dark spirits. So if this legend spans all over Britain, and over each continent!! Surely there’s something behind it and better safe than sorry? 🤪

Yeah.. I've heard that whistling at night is no good. In the US, supposedly has to do with skin walkerers too. I'm not sure what would happen if I did that where I'm from, because I haven't heard of something that might happen if you whistle.
My Dad was from Sheffield and used to always say you shouldn’t whistle when you’re walking in the dark (especially outside the cities).
My Mum was from a mining village in the West Midlands and she told me that the miners wouldn’t whistle in the mines.
The only legend Australia has is, you gotta buy a snag with onions at any home hardware shop you go to...( Its usually to raise money for something local like fire brigade or a school or a kindergarten)

@@zombiechicken7114 First, Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom, it is NOT a part of Great Britain, so the title and desciption contradict each other.
Second, he lists encounters from counties that are in the Republic of Ireland, nothing to do with either the UK or Britain.
In short, including Dobhar-chú in a "British" legends video is simply wrong, it should be a British and Irish legends video at the very least.

"THE RAVEN MASTER"
The story of the lantern men was terrifying. However, I have a story that relates to the bird man in Cornwall.
In 1996, I was 11, and my family went on holiday to South devon. we stayed in a chalet in a small village, I believe was called Shaldon near Teignmouth.
Right, so our chalet was on a on top of a cliff face . And I was taking in the view which from memory was of large red rocks obviously the sea , and a skeleton of what I thought was just a small boat like a dinghy.
One day, whilst looking through my binoculars, I saw a rather large bird that looked like a crow spread its wings whilst standing on one of these rocks and to be honest it was huge, I tried taking a photo but it came out blurry on a particularly awful camera.
I thought not much to it and just ignored it and went back indoors for no particular reason I didn't even witness it fly away.
It was only a few days later when I saw people walking on the boat skeleton I realised how high up we really was and infact that boat skeleton was not a small dinghy it was a very large ship as the people looked like ants .
After that, it bothered me about this bird I saw , I was like, how big was it ?
Or what was it , it must have been huge .
Well, that's my story, nothing really, probably, but i do wonder if anyone else has been there .
As of March 2024 Chris Skaife is still Ravenmaster of the Tower of London. Personally I think Ravenmaster is probably the best job title on the planet.

"However, some ravens have gone absent without leave in the past and others have even been sacked. Raven Muninn flew off to Greenwich and was eventually returned by a vigilant member of the public after seven days. Raven George was dismissed for eating television aerials and Raven Grog was last seen outside an East End pub."

Sorry, as an Irish woman, Galway (Gaul-way), Leitrim (Lee-trim) and Mayo (as written) are all in the Republic of Ireland not Northern Ireland, so it isn’t just British tales here. There obviously a massive cross over between the two given history, proximity etc, and especially between Scotland and ROI. But please don’t include us in Britain. I know you said “Ireland” but I’m the intro you said British urban legends and creatures.
Firstly, Dobhar chú is Irish NOT British. Yes, Northern Ireland is currently part of the United Kingdom but Northern Ireland is only 101 years old. This legend goes back thousands of years. 😡 Secondly, it's pronounced 'Dow-v- eir Khoo'.
Thirdly, you could do an hour long video about mythical creatures from both Ireland and Britain so no need to lump us together. 😊
