I love that this song hasn’t been released anywhere, we only had a couple bad quality live clips before this, and yet everyone still knew every word. She said it might never come out, it’s just fun to sing. You have to watch some of her upbeat live performances! She runs, jumps, and dances and doesn’t miss a beat.
On one hand its such a good song that I hope it will be her next major hit after GLB, but on the other I'd love if it was all for us "real fans" and maybe only gets a real proper release on her next album
And not everybody picks that up on first hearing, so good on ya, Tim. Good appreciation for the story being told in the lyrics. Chappell absolutely excels at narrative... along with everything else she excels at! Our already knowing how well she does that, and how one of her trademarks is cleverly changing meaning with just very subtle changes of lyrics, helps us all be alert for these. Of course, when were actively neing swrpt away in just the gorgeousness of her voice and music, it's still possible for some of the meaning change-ups to get by us on the first hearing.
My favorite band ever is Pearl Jam so I know of several songs where Eddie does this as well. "Daughter" he sings "A young girl...violins(violence)". He sings it in such a way where you hear both words which obviously have very different meanings and foreshadows what the song's theme is about. Another example is from "I Am Mine." He toggles between the following: "All the innocents lost at one time" and "All the innocence lost at one time." Means two slightly different things. One refers to the people lost at the Rokskilde festival and the other the band's loss of innocence after this tragic event. Love it when artists do this with their lyrics.
@bartlebyscrivener2980 Also, idk if it's just for me, but I like how the song was about her trying to move on right? But then came the bridge where it was actually her ex that got away first😢
I know she's a Lana fan, so I'm wondering if she was inspired by her after hearing White Mustang because it sounds like Lana is saying, "Why am I staying?"
Chappell is bringing back belting that 90's divas did a lot back when music was exciting and diverse. It's so amazing that she's not another singer from the same cookie cutter mould who sounds bored and relies on autotune. She's very talented with her vocal range, singing technique, songwriting and she's just a fantastic entertainer.
Thank God, singers this big need to be vocal beasts imo. They don't deserve it just for "songwriting" especially with access to the best coaches around
Not to trauma dump, but I recently lost my cat of 15 years, and this song crushes my soul with lines like "till I don't look for you on the staircase" "she's got a way, she got away." (She was in foster care and escaped / never came back) Thanks again for another Chapell video! *wipes tears* lol
Her theme for this set of Lollapalooza is wrestling/bodybuilding so she hired some male and female bodybuilders on stage and they were working out and posting on stage it was fun. Plus she initially came out in a luchador mask as her wresting attire then took it off after a few songs to show her amazing make up ❤❤
One of the interesting things about Subway is that with each festival appearance, Chappell seems to hold that last money note longer and longer, seemingly playing a self challenge game with herself. Also Subway is a song she's performed at least twice in recent shows after being fairly openly emotional on stage, and still delivered a perfect performance. I find the song giving me 1970's feels in many ways in its opening parts, with its dreamy drifty sound that feels so appropriate to the longing nature of the piece. The end with the flip between "She's got a way" and "She got away" is in my eyes a brilliant bit of lyrical design, that not only allows her to deliver that belt note, but also to build up to it using each subtle verbal switch as a ladder up to it. Subway seems to be a piece that is clearly part of the Good Luck Babe songwriting era of her work. If you play it right after GLB the slow down ending of GLB and the slow dreamy build of Subway fit together well, almost as if designed to be paired on an album in that order. I suspect it was going to be her second single, but with GLB's huge success she didn't feel it was strong enough to be the follow up which is going to be the focus os a lot of "Does she really have it?" sorta eyeballing. To me it's a piece that shows continuing evolution to her skills on many fronts. As to the next piece to review, hands down it should be Kaleidoscope, and this specific live performance recorded for the video: ua-cam.com/video/imHkz5nD6gs/v-deo.html Given your pure joy in artists being emotional conduits for the work, this one will hit you hard. It's also one that she wrote totally solo And though the live stuff fits your style of reaction so perfectly, I feel you should work your way through the album tracks in order from 1 to 14 and provide your reactions to the studio versions and how they compare in your mind to the live ones you have seen.Or, even better, you could even find a concert performance of the track then play the studio version and contrast in each video That would give you a 14 video series (15 if you include GLB) to work on which would be a distinctive addition to your channel. And if you really wanted to start to show the evolution of Chappell as an artist this piece "Sugar High" ua-cam.com/video/O4RARnYN7Sw/v-deo.html was part of her work at the end of what I think of her first era, where she was doing moody cursive style gothic pieces that had gotten her signed to her first label. Eventually she'd write Pink Pony Club and the label balked at releasing it as "It was so different and would alienate her fans" and eventually she was dropped. But Sugar High in my eyes is a piece that really shows to me the moment when she was starting to change styles from the Cursive work, to the modern Rise and Fall era. You can hear the beginnings of things that are all over the current work starting in there. I feel it would be a good piece to consider for reaction knowing its context. Great review as always. Thank you.
@@erinhohman Agreed the track order of the album matters a ton. Like most of Chappell's choices it's very very intentional, and serves to build a bigger whole then it's parts.
Random compliment: you're literally the only UA-camr i dont mind listening to the promo/commercial part because you're literally so authentic of a person, and your passion shines through THAT much. I hope u get everything u want out of life. 🎉
Aww that means a lot thanks. I am blessed to be doing well with all of this and am so grateful that this platform can become something helpful for many others! A rising tide lifts all boats.
I was there!!! It was our third Lolla and the crowd was unlike anything we’d ever seen before! Truly took us an hour to get out after the performance was over. Worth every second though 😊
@@TimWelchVocalStudio Absolutely! If you can believe it, the venue didn’t realize how big she was so they had to switch her stage and time THE NIGHT BEFORE so she could be on one of the big stages the closers use. Great move on their part; I could not imagine her at a smaller stage.
I was at her concert last Monday here in Berlin, and oh my goddess... Witnessing her live live is incomparable! It seems like there's no video that do her live experience justice. She was just perfect! Her vocals are absurd and she was moving a lot! She's not human
I'd love to see a reaction to this whole Lallapalooza performance, haven't seen a performance that good and a crowd that big, sing along that well in a while.
Tim... Bob the dummy is there because it's part of the wrestling, training gym theme of her set. She had local LGBTQ+ body builders working out onstage for a bunch of songs in the background. You should do festival journey review of her starting this year with Coachella to Bonnaroo to Lolapolooza to Outside Lands. It's an amazing progression of the stage/audience size and her evolution of performing the songs. She has a unique theme for each performance as well. TinyDesk is still the best because it's stripped down and really showcases his vocals. Her Bonnaroo set is still my favorite festival performance because it has the lingering feeling that a paradigm shift is about to happen in the music industry. It would not surprise me that someday Chappell will have some type of concert film or a musical that will be played at midnight in movie theaters like Rocky Horror, but with a Pink Pony storyline. AMC, are you listening? You're welcome!
This is an excellent idea. The festival progression is worth seeing. And she made fun of her top falling down also, and made it off like it wouldn't be a big deal if it did.
ahhhh you’re the only person who’s reacted to this I’m so excited!!! ❤❤ I’m so glad I found your channel, your videos are just so sweet and kind and you are so genuine and seem like you really enjoy doing this. thanks for doing what you do!!
This is the song of hers other than kaleidoscope that truly makes me break down. She understands me. She’s the truest Pisces and I just can’t express how pure her understanding of love is. I needed her music and she shows up time and time again.
She really went for it that day! Chappell held that note like a true pro! Blown away by this performance!! She's just incredible!!❤ So fortunate to have seen her twice now and they were nights I'll never forget. Proud of my fellow Missourian Chappell Roan 💓
In a lot of her performances, I've noticed she will forego the right note to just yell to the crowd. I think it is just adding an emotional rawness in these live shows. Also, great analysis. Best I've seen, really. Good video formatting as well :)
I had not heard of Chapel until one of your video reactions and she blew me away as much as she did you. Sadly on my drive home from work yesterday I heard on the radio that she has put out a statement saying that she has been diagnosed with clinical depression. Due in large to her sudden rise in fame and with so many changes in her life both big and small that she had not previously given much thought to therefore was not prepared for, eg how she can no longer do the simple things that used to bring her joy, such as going thrift shopping, without having to organise security. Apparently it has even got so bad that some fans had found her father’s phone number and were calling him at all hours wanting to know all about her and where she was etc. Part of her statement said (and of I’m paraphrasing all of this of course) that Being my fan does not mean that you have the right to have access to me 24/7. I was impressed with her stating that. I might be wrong and perhaps you could speak to this whole topic in an appropriate video at some point? I feel in the past Stars just had to put up with all of the fans, whacko ones and all, for fear of losing popularity or their place on the charts. If so most likely they were pressured by the record companies to not speak up for themselves? I think in this day and age of the need for instant gratification and of entitlement sadly if the big Stars don’t start laying down the ground rules more and more are going to suffer with similar mental health issues. Although it was for slightly different reasons, when Ren said that any fans he finds behaving in a way that doesn’t align with his morals and mindset that he would block them without hesitation. I actually physically applauded him, like a mad woman applauding madly at my iPad screen. I have despaired for quite some time now that the concept of boundaries (and numerous other aspects of considerations required for living somewhat cohesively in society) was becoming extinct in this modern world. I hope that more and more stars get on board with setting and maintaining boundaries for themselves. For their own benefit but it would be nice if the trickle down effect was that having consideration for others might return to the collective consciousness.
It's not surprising that she's depressed, because I have bipolar too and falling down a depression spiral is so common, even with nothing significant happening
I was aware of this and I appreciate your thoughtful comment about it. I’m happy to mention some thing about it in one of my videos of hers moving forward. 💛✨🙏🏼
Well, Christmas came early this year because I was really hoping you’d do this song for a while and here it is! Love the teaching aspects of all of your videos and the adorable “Awww” at the beginning of this one. You were feeling it.
i’d be really interested in your reaction to her performing this song at outside lands. it seems like she sang an even higher note than here. her performances of this song just keep improving
This is currently my favorite song, maybe because it's so hard to get. That being said, I don't think I can ever listen to Picture You without crying. Her emotions are raw.
This song makes me cry so hard!!! Thank you for your videos I am obsessed with listening to you break down her vocals. I have learned so much! And it has somehow given me an even DEEPER appreciation for her as an artist. Her talent is truly unmatched.❤
You've got a good review format, it's working very well on the incomparable midwest princess (btw, for fun find and listen to her spoken word intro to this and her other festival entire sets... it's IDK, half a minute, and SO awesome), and you're crushing these. I'm here for everything Chappell you review. Next, maybe her Kaleidoscope live studio official video. Night before last I heard live Wes Leavins fronting the band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. You'd love their music, Wes's incredible voice, the things he does with it, and the emotion he delivers. At some point you should check the guy out. Baz Luhrman (sp?) recruited him to help create Elvis' sound in Luhrman's Elvis biopic (which I enjoyed the hell out of).
Love your Chappell reactions, please keep them coming! I hope you eventually get around to "Guilty Pleasure," it's my favorite on the album. On another note, I would love it if you'd react to Renee Rapp (particularly her performance of "Snow Angel" from SNL 2024). She's an insanely talented vocalist and released her debut album last year!
I just can’t believe it took so long for her to find her niche that brought her to the masses. I am so glad people finally get to hear her sing. I caught her a few years back but at the time She felt more like indie or folk pop to me. This was one of my fav songs, so check it out for her vocals. ua-cam.com/video/_wGZNB4GGAU/v-deo.htmlsi=buWSa-528SpQZ_6E
Honestly, I'd love to see you react to some of her live performances where she runs and sings at the same time. I'm curious to hear your opinions on that 😊
Great video! She can’t turn off the emotionality. It’s who she is. And - she vs she’s got away. I caught that first time through. Very very clever. And re riffs - maybe she just doesn’t like to do it or isn’t comfy with it or doesn’t like the sound of it or it isn’t her sound or vibe. She’s a master. So gifted. Has worked hard on her craft. Legend.
Loved this! I especially enjoyed your pointing out the subtle nuances in her vocals. I had a little difficulty hearing her words, so it was great that you pointed out specific lyrics. I need better headphones! Thanks Tim!🙋♀️💖
If you wanna hear more of her really deep vocals you should listen to her School Nights EP! There is at least a video of her singing Die Young acoustic. The sound is completely different from what she’s doing now.
Another young artist to check out is Faouzia! Not only can she play multiple instruments, she has a Moroccan background and uses those traditional style scales systems blended into her music. She's great live, acoustic, or fully produced and pop sounding.
I had no interest in singing. I only found your videos because I love Chappell Roan and I don't know anyone in my life that is a super fan so I love watching videos of people talking about how fantastic she is. However, thanks to your videos, and the way you talk about the technical side of singing, I really am starting to appreciate the talent and effort it takes to voice train. You also give off such a positive and warm aura. It's refreshing. I appreciate your videos, and you've gained a new subscriber 🤗
the thumbnail put me in defensive mode at first 😂 thank you for the explanation. just found out you are a Renegade, too. Looking forward to your reactions , especially from Sleep Token and Ren
Thank youuuu! Thank you😅i have been one of your viewers nagging you for this one😅 Also, I just came from a video of Kelly Clarkson and Miranda Lambert covering goodluck babe. Kelly was (as you are) talking about the head to chest voice flipping that Chappell does.
@@TimWelchVocalStudio It was kind of just a snippet so I feel like they didn't get a chance to 'go there'. Would love to hear either of them try it out individually- on their own. It's a hard song and even Kelly who is an absolute power house was tussling with it a bit. I would love to hear Adele sing one of Chappell's songs. Her voice is really different from Chappell's but she has that same raw emotive quality and uses her voice very interestingly to maximize that.
Howdy! Big fan of your videos; I particularly like the physiological breakdowns! If you're looking for a next song, I suggest either Kaleidescope or Good Hurt. In the former there is some interesting voice quality jumping around, and in the latter she sounds like a completely different person. Regardless of what you do, I'll be watching!
Thank you for another great one! Please think about reacting to Emily Armstrong both in Linkin Park and Dead Sara. I honestly can't wrap my mind around the power, range, and versatility of her voice. 😊
It's both she's got away and she got away--she's dressed in a luchador-like outfit. The mannikin was left over from various athletes working out behind her during her opening songs. Don't know why they left it there.
I just started listening to vocal analysis' ... and I really appreciate your approach to it. You're obviously passionate about your work! I tried a few other vocal coaches' videos and found them .... annoying. Thanks for being rad. Gonna go look for your Taylor content!
Hi, Tim. Can you do My Kink Is Karma? I'll find a better audio for you from one of the Festival's she performed. We are truly learning from your exquisite thoughts Edit: There you go. I know you're going to enjoy this ua-cam.com/video/fdh4ZQuOAfY/v-deo.htmlsi=QU-oyZFka4Au8rFA
"She's got a way"........ remove the apostrophe "s" and a space, you get "She got away". Phonetically almost identical but totally different meaning. This is a testament not only to Chappell's talent as a lyricist, but also to the expressive efficiency and genius of English, the greatest language ever devised.
I'm ngl, the first time I heard it in her Bangaroo(?) Performance I couldn't make out the lyrics I legit thought she was saying either "she's gotta wait" or "su-u-b way" 🫣😭

i’d be really interested in your reaction to her performing this song at outside lands. it seems like she sang an even higher note than here. her performances of this song just keep improving
Oh wow! Good to know.
I was there ! It was sooo fucking good ! Life changing tbh, need to see her again !
just heard u saying "brazilian jiu-jitsu" and now i have to say hi, hello 😂👋 brazilian viewer here. love your reactions and analysis of chappell
Oh awesome! Hello! 👋
just came back home from her concert in berlin! the most amazing experience ever :)
Oh I'd *love* your reaction to "My Kink is Karma" from this concert
Yes! I haven’t reacted to that one yet.
@@TimWelchVocalStudio the physicality and ENERGY of the live performance *plus* the vocals of that song?! it's WILD
@@kathleenlittlefield8849 that's my favorite song of hers!!!! she's unreal.
I didn’t pick up her sounding similar to Jewel yet. I’ll listen for that. I saw Jewel a couple times live in the ‘90s. Epic. Was obsessed.
That’s my goal. Help you love her more!
Thanks for the recommendation. I think that is definitely next on the list!
I was here! I was there when she debuted the song at Gov Ball. This song is perfect.
Wow amazing! 🙌🏼✨
Thank you for reacting to my favorite CR song! I’m glad you love it too. ❤
💛✨🙏🏼
Love your Chappell reactions, please keep them coming! I hope you eventually get around to "Guilty Pleasure," it's my favorite on the album.
On another note, I would love it if you'd react to Renee Rapp (particularly her performance of "Snow Angel" from SNL 2024). She's an insanely talented vocalist and released her debut album last year!
AWW THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS! 💛✨🙏🏼 Yes go Guilty Pleasure and yes to Renee Rapp!
I was there in that crowd! It was absolutely incredible to witness and hear live
Ahh!!! Second comment saying they were there! ✨🙌🏼
I am obsessed with this song!! ❤
Interesting factoid about the minimal air useage during long belts
Yes!
self harmonizes with backing track.. wonderful
I hear the nod to the song It Must Have Been Love ❤
Yesssssss!
Interesting to hear her quoting Yogi Berra! It works great...
It's not over til it's over
It's never over
Yes!
I just can’t believe it took so long for her to find her niche that brought her to the masses. I am so glad people finally get to hear her sing. I caught her a few years back but at the time She felt more like indie or folk pop to me. This was one of my fav songs, so check it out for her vocals.

Honestly, I'd love to see you react to some of her live performances where she runs and sings at the same time. I'm curious to hear your opinions on that 😊
Love her music and this is my favourite so far
Great video!
She can’t turn off the emotionality. It’s who she is.
And - she vs she’s got away. I caught that first time through. Very very clever.
And re riffs - maybe she just doesn’t like to do it or isn’t comfy with it or doesn’t like the sound of it or it isn’t her sound or vibe.
She’s a master. So gifted. Has worked hard on her craft. Legend.
“Is that you?” Made me laugh out loud. 😅
Turns out someone in the comments already was there! lol
As much as I love this song and want it to get an official release, I also kinda love the novelty of it being a live-only track! 💖
Yes!
Loved this!
I especially enjoyed your pointing out the subtle nuances in her vocals. I had a little difficulty hearing her words, so it was great that you pointed out specific lyrics. I need better headphones!
Thanks Tim!🙋♀️💖
Yes, Barbara! We need to get you some good headphones for all this listening. 😁
Thanks for your videos. I'd love to see more Chappell Roan content from you! So great to find someone who appreciates Chappell's art the way you do ❤
Awww THANKS SO MUCH FOR THiS! Request heard. More Chappell to come for sure. 💛✨🙏🏼
@20:30 When she went deeper right there, she sounded like Madonna. She can sound like whoever she wants. I've never seen anything like it.
Please please react to Kaleidoscope! She has a live version that is just incredible. I think you'll really appreciate her vocals.
On it!
Love your initial reaction lol
OMG I DIDN'T REALIZE SHE WAS SAYING "she's got a way/ she got away" I THOUGHT SHE WAS SAYING IT AS IN "she's got away" like "SHE HAS GOT AWAY" 😭😭😭
I think you'd really enjoy some Renee Rapp performances, especially 'Snow Angel' on SNL.
If you wanna hear more of her really deep vocals you should listen to her School Nights EP! There is at least a video of her singing Die Young acoustic. The sound is completely different from what she’s doing now.
Oo! I’ll have to check that out.
I agree! I think “Sugar High” really demonstrates her versatility and has a pretty different sound than her latest album
I am here to see the goosebumps you were always doing 😆
i was here and it was amazing!
Yesss I’m so happy you are reacting to this one ❤
So gooood
Love your videos! Chappell covered Barracuda INCREDIBLY last night in Council Bluffs. Please add to your Chappell queue 🙏
Oh thanks! Added.
@@TimWelchVocalStudio Here is the best audio of the Barracuda performance. ua-cam.com/video/CVG0Z6Nqrzs/v-deo.html
Another young artist to check out is Faouzia! Not only can she play multiple instruments, she has a Moroccan background and uses those traditional style scales systems blended into her music. She's great live, acoustic, or fully produced and pop sounding.
Oo!
i think she usually uses a backing track
I had no interest in singing. I only found your videos because I love Chappell Roan and I don't know anyone in my life that is a super fan so I love watching videos of people talking about how fantastic she is.
However, thanks to your videos, and the way you talk about the technical side of singing, I really am starting to appreciate the talent and effort it takes to voice train.
You also give off such a positive and warm aura. It's refreshing. I appreciate your videos, and you've gained a new subscriber 🤗
Great to have you here with me!💛✨🙏🏼
the thumbnail put me in defensive mode at first 😂 thank you for the explanation. just found out you are a Renegade, too. Looking forward to your reactions , especially from Sleep Token and Ren
I love your reaction videos! still need you to react to jade's angel of my dreams (S.A.D version) live performance xx
Got it! 🙏🏼
Oh wow, I have to check it out! How did they do at staying expressively connected to the text?
@@TimWelchVocalStudio The golden question, lmao.
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Thank you for another great one! Please think about reacting to Emily Armstrong both in Linkin Park and Dead Sara. I honestly can't wrap my mind around the power, range, and versatility of her voice. 😊
I already reacted to her, doing the emptiness machine! A few days ago.

I was there in the middle, it was 95 hot and sweaty that day
you should do casual!
My Kink is Karma - whilst viewing the official music video at the same time, pls? (if possible)
On it!
14 second belt in this performance Jesus Christ
You need to listen to her old stuff. It’s VERY different from her sound now.
Specifically “Die Young”. The acoustic version is 💯
It's both she's got away and she got away--she's dressed in a luchador-like outfit. The mannikin was left over from various athletes working out behind her during her opening songs. Don't know why they left it there.
Thanks!
you should react to casual!
Can you react to the ballad of Sara berry
Thank you for your video Tim, great job 👏Real question though, can anyone learn how to sing properly?
What do you mean by properly? But yes!
I just started listening to vocal analysis' ... and I really appreciate your approach to it. You're obviously passionate about your work! I tried a few other vocal coaches' videos and found them .... annoying. Thanks for being rad. Gonna go look for your Taylor content!
Thanks! ✨🙏🏼💛
Tori Amos vibes in the beginning and pre-chorus of this one.
This song Calls Tori Amos to mind with the melody
I agree!
Hi, can you do a reaction to naked in manhattan in lollapalooza. She has something good in the end part vocally:)
Yes!
Can you please give an example of someone riffing like you’d like to hear Chappell try?
like Yebba, ‘My Mind’ Jessie J ‘Big White Room’…
Can someone define "riffing" in this context?
Riffing is adding extra notes to the melody for expressive effect.
Hi, Tim. Can you do My Kink Is Karma? I'll find a better audio for you from one of the Festival's she performed. We are truly learning from your exquisite thoughts
Edit:
There you go. I know you're going to enjoy this
ua-cam.com/video/fdh4ZQuOAfY/v-deo.htmlsi=QU-oyZFka4Au8rFA
Thanks!
Omg I’m so early
Not at all lol!
first!!
Yes!🙌🏼
"She's got a way"........ remove the apostrophe "s" and a space, you get "She got away". Phonetically almost identical but totally different meaning. This is a testament not only to Chappell's talent as a lyricist, but also to the expressive efficiency and genius of English, the greatest language ever devised.
I'm ngl, the first time I heard it in her Bangaroo(?) Performance I couldn't make out the lyrics I legit thought she was saying either "she's gotta wait" or "su-u-b way" 🫣😭
🤣🙏🏼
Bonnaroo
It took me a minute to understand the lyrics too. This video helped.
