I wish reactors knew to actually watch Black Swan Chappell interviewed first and then go to White Swan Chappell singing, because more than with any other musical guest I can think of what she's done is build an extended piece of performance art. In the interview segment she's interesting and funny, you get a sense of her as a person, and there's nothing about it that spoils anything... and those costumes form a fascinating set.

I've been casting about in my mental archives for a good while for possible comparables, and I'm still sorting.
The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess IS the best debut album of original songs by any singer-songwriter, in any genre of popular music, at leaat that I've been able to think of.
So many of the greatest singer-songwriter debut albums have had at least one non-original song. Among those that have contained only original songs, every one I know of is been flawed by at least one weak track. Midwest Princess has zero weak tracks, only excellent to spectacular ones, and the range of musical accomplishment displayed in those songs is astonishing.
If we drop the "debut" part, but keep the requirement of all original songs, it opens up the possibility for there to maybe be a few equivalents. I've tried to keep some perspective while consumed with Chappellmania, so, as I say, I'm still trying to take fair measure of the greatness of Chappell Roan and Dan Nigro's 14-gem masterpiece.
What I will say is that I believe Midwest Princess does stand WITH the greatest albums of all time. That it will prove out over the coming decades to deserve its place with the other greatest works of this art form. I think it is likely to be enjoyed for however long humans still listen to recorded music in album form.

Chapelle is definitely a healthy singer. In this performance she actually sings the song in a lower key than it is on the official track, because the high parts were too high to perform consistently without straining her voice. And I think that's awesome that she knows her limits!

As you hear more Chappell Roan, you'll inevitably compare her to more and more artists (Gaga, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Taylor Swift, various classic Torch Singers...) then eventually you'll ditch the comparisons (except as context to explain what she's doing in a specific song) because she can AND does incorporate all of those sounds with ease in different songs. She's amazingly versatile.
Recommendations: her Tiny Desk. Its beyond amazing. "Epic" might still be underselling it. If you react, do it song by song with a lot of commentary to avoid copyright issues. A listen to her whole album, of course. And somewhere on UA-cam (although you probably will only be able to Patreon this) youll likely find her Lollapalioza hour long performance from just a week ago. Its a great contrast to her Tiny Desk and Tonight Show performance to see how she reacts to 80,000 fans (answer: very well).

For sure! I can’t explain what she’s doing (not a vocalist), but I can feel it in my body when she makes that sound. It’s a sound I can make, too. It’s almost akin to a slight laugh she’s inserting into the line, in sort of a mocking way because she’s feeling bitter. I don’t think it was digitized at all. I think it was a really smart emotional choice.

IIRC both Devon and Allie support a little with vocals in spots, I forget which song/s
Anything else has been backing tracks, is my impression.

    Great reaction
I have some context that may explain the background singer choices. It could be a creative choice but it could also be financial
Two years ago she was working in a doughnut shop and just a year ago could finally pay rent. I’ve noticed her touring band is a power trio. No keyboards, backup singers or dancers. Pretty sparce for pop. In this age of streaming where artists aren’t selling 10 million albums like Bon Jovi, this COULD be a financial decision, especially for an up and coming artist
I noticed for some one off shows like tiny desk, she adds more musicians. There’s zero tracks during her tiny desk concert. It’s already iconic

But thematically expect LOTS of Alanis Morisette.
In fact, it's inevitable that, like Jagged Little Pill, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess becomes a stage musical. All 14 songs are not just wonderful musically, they are powerfully and brilliantly narrative... bangers, bops, and ballads, all. I don't really have favorite Midwest Princess songs, that would feel disrespectful, like suggesting there are lesser sections to a masterwork of art that coheres as a whole.
If you do a whole-album reaction all at once, that probably would be best, and then edit them into individual vids if you want.
And fasten your seatbelt, you'll be in a rollercoaster ride of celebrstory anthemic peaks and depths of pathos... sometimes both in single peaks.

That vocal effect at around 10:42 I’ve only heard once other artist do intentionally, which was Julia Stone’s cover of “Feeding Line” by Boy and Bear for the Australian radio station Triple J’s “Like a Version” section.

i highly recommend reacting to her tiny desk concert! she has live backing vocals there and her band with her as well. and a little background before you go further - chappell roan is her stage/drag persona, not her real name, so you have a lot of over the top (and amazing) costuming to look forward to if you watch more of her stuff.

i was rushing to the comments to recommend her tiny desk concert but then you mentioned it! absolutely recommended. also just for fun i suggest checking out one of her festival sets bc she has some really fun dance-y pop songs that don’t necessarily lend themselves to npr but are worth seeing/hearing imo! or you can just listen to her album, i suppose. 😅

Absolutely loved this breakdown! You've got my sub✌️
Something cool to note if you've only heard the live version is how she quiets down, drops her pitch, and slows down at the end to mimic the vinyl slowing/pitch lowering effect present in the studio version. Slowing down and fading out is obviously not that unique in general, but I think it's used to great effect here. It seems like a difficult thing to mimic the original digital effect specifically too, and obviously it's still different, but I think it very much invokes the same feeling.

Thanks for doing this video! Two vocalists I often see her compared to are Kate Bush and Cyndi Lauper. If you're familiar with their voices, I'd be curious to hear your perspective as a vocal coach as to whether you think those comparisons are apt. I feel like I mostly hear Cyndi in some of the vowel choices and in the very forward-placed conversational tone (especially "when you wake up next to him in the middle of the night" from the bridge)
