This is about her moving to California for her music career and her first label dropped her cause “she didn’t go far enough” and then she went home and then came back and now she’s literally your favorite artist’s favorite artist boy did they mess that one up
This timeline often gets messed up because the lyrics fit in too perfectly with her eventual story. “California” was released in May 2020, while she was still with Atlantic Records. She was dropped in August 2020. It ties in her general non-success up to that point, but it’s not a direct response to being dropped.
I mean, she’s a really good drummer and it’s the right thing to do in this situation, but Ringo Starr was recording with tea towels on his kit 60years ago
One of my favorite things about your reactions is that you allow the song to play thru once and your face says so much. Then your analysis is so skilled and specific. You are one of my faves
This song really hits for all the princesses from the midwest that have moved to the west coast. The culture here is lacking, the people are fake mostly, the landscapes are the best part. It’s hard for midwesterners in this place. I feel this song. I moved here for my career too and it’s been a struggle because my midwestern authenticity challenges the egos here. And the vibe I carry is so different from the gatekeeping privilege of many that were raised on the west coast
I can tell you this. Any of us fellow Missourians that have paid even the slightest attention to Chappell over the course of her career are incredibly proud of her. Especially when we hear this song. Even though I'm some almost 50 year old straight white dude from St. Louis, I believed in her for quite some time, and am so excited she's getting the recognition she deserves!❤
You're right about her emotional investment in her singing. She mentioned in an interview that she cries almost every time when she sings Kaleidoscope (beautiful song from the album)
This is one of my favorites of hers, and I love every one of her songs. The lyricism and storytelling is so beautifully done. “I trade amber clay roads for the sea foam and the endless sun rays” paints such a visual contrast of where she came from and where she went. Then “Come get me out of California, no leaves are brown” as a contrast to The Mamas and the Papas “California Dreamin’” lyric “All the leaves are brown”. The drums are definitely more prominent in the album version, but still softened, and it almost feels like it adds some urgency to the feeling of needing to get out. I’ll be interested to see your take on it if you react to the album version.
i absolutely love how she sings “no leaves are bro-hown” in the final chorus/outro. the “hown” part sounds like an exasperated sob. it definitely packs a punch in the studio version versus this one but they’re both still beautiful
I love that part too! It reminds me of Mariachi music. They always do that sobbing sound while singing sad songs and its a technique I really like lol.
This one and kaleidoscope make me cry. I remember this feeling when I was her age. Moved to California and things were so much harder than I realized. I feel every inch of this song
I was in orchestra and band in elementary, middle, and high school, then choir in high school and college. I took note of her hand count of the time signature in the first verse and really appreciated it. I've watched probably dozens of reactions to this Tiny Desk concert, and you're the only reactor I've seen mention that. With my instrumental and vocal musical background, I really appreciate the vocalists who work so well with their supporting instrumentalists.
I mean the vast majority of channels can't do it because they get slapped with a copyright strike... And if you get three copyright strikes your channel gets automatically deleted. So yeah, people try to avoid copyright strikes as much as they possibly can because they can be VERY detrimental... I only know of one other channel who does reactions the way that this guy does reactions... It's a really risky way to do it. 🤷♀️ Which is why most people don't do it this way.
Tim, such a great breakdown. This performance is a work of art. I don't think people understand what's going on with her. She's a transcendent artist. Gaga, Bowie, Winehouse, Roan.
Alanis. All uncanny and singular performers, and all with some great songs to their credit. But here's one big difference. Chappell and Dan Nigro's songwriting is consistently great in ways none of her legendary predecessors have ever gotten close to. "No skips" is such an understatement it's nearly an insult. And other difference is Chappell's special gift, of writing incredibly exuberant, FUN songs, partying songs, and slipping in to them, often unnoticed, powerful pathos and heartbreak.
This is also one of my favorite songs by her because of that Tiny Desk performance putting it in a new light for me. It's so refreshing to see someone appreciate the technical ability like you do. The part where you mention loving seeing people doing innovative stuff with their singing - it reminded me of how I felt watching the new video of Raye singing 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World' live at the Montreux Jazz Festival. You've got to give it a watch for your own amusement, even if you don't react! The stuff she does with her voice is so unique especially for her generation.
Could tell immediately that you were super moved by this song😊 thanks for your reactions, i genuinely find your 'vocal coach breakdowns' to be the best of all the many I've seen on yt. Would love to see you react to 'the subway' (Chappell's outsidelands performance) if you get the chance:) thanks again!
I’ve watched your reactions to Chappell a few times because I just started listening to her like 2 weeks ago, and I love how you break it all down and get so excited for other singers! 😊🫶 Somehow I hadn’t seen this performance for “California” yet, so it was my first listen as well! All her songs remind me of different artists, and she has such variety in her songs, I just love it! I still think her Tiny Desk performance of “Picture You” is my fave, but this may be my second now. ❤
One of my favorite songs from here. Appreciated your insights on this one, I learn something each time I watch one of your videos. I think you mentioned possibly taking a look at her newest one, The Subway, and if so I'm curious about the structure of that one - it feels like another example where the bridge is also the outro.
Thank you for these beautiful breakdowns of her songs! They’re a blast and it’s so interesting learning more about the technicality of her vocals and how her artistry impacts the listener’s experience. Each song’s a mesmerizing tapestry of colour and texture. I love looking at them up close and as a whole with your commentary.
id love to see your reaction to guilty pleasure! its one of my favorite songs from this album, its so fun and has lots of interesting vocal stuff that i think youll love
I said "In the heights" at the same time you did... The kind of pain you feel when you hear "Breathe" kinda comes back with this song. I very much agree with that comparison
@@TimWelchVocalStudio My favorite musical moment in this song is the last time she sings “no leaves are brown” after the bridge (at 19.00 in your video). It’s different than all the other times she sings it because she doesn’t go up on “brown”, she stays low. It sounds like the chords behind her would be different, creating a suspended note, but the musicians stop playing. She makes that change entirely with her a cappella voice and then the band comes back in when she resolves the note. It’s amazing arranging and musicianship.
I immediately subscribed, you pointed out all of the beautiful work that blew me away the first time I watched this performance. I feel like this performance of this song particularly is the perfect showcase of why Chappell is now known as "your favorite artist's favorite artist". As an artist myself, I can't help but feel immensely inspired by her. She does *such* an amazing job of taking her audience on a journey - even with her more upbeat tracks on this album, like Naked In Manhattan and HOT TO GO. I love that you also appreciate the orchestra music in her work. This song as well as Picture You, Kaleidoscope and Coffee all have that beautiful movie soundtrack-quality orchestra music. I would love to write a musical with her, or to see her write a movie soundtrack! She is a true vocalist and performance artist - through and through. I really feel that she may be one of the greatest artists of our generation, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. I've thought about posting covers of some of her songs from this album because the vocal choices that she makes are very similar to the ones that I love to implement in my vocal work. I'm hesitant though because I haven't really worked on my voice in 3 years, and I feel so out of practice. But it would be so much fun too, so idk!
I'd like to add something to your observation on how Chappell was counting the beat to help the band come in at the start of the song. I feel that my be true, but I think there is another reason for it. In some of her early work when she is playing piano and singing she does the same thing, even with no band. So to me it seems she is doing it for her own use. As a totally self taught singer I think she self metronomes when she is a cappella, or moving through a very non-standard beat, to keep herself on mark. You can see that she even seems to be keeping a sub-beat count with her fingers while metering the major. beat with her whole hand. It's an interesting artifact I feel from how she learned to so what she does with her voice, and as a comfortable tool, and one that is a decade old, she still uses it without a second thought. As soon as the instruments started to carry the beat she stopped, but NOT right when they came in but a notable measure after. Probably when she felt comfortable in leaning back into the musics beat guide. But I'll also agree that this is a beautiful gutting song that is delivered so well by her as to pack a much bigger punch. It's very lovely, and in my opinion there are some other cuts on the album (Kaleidoscope) that punch the old feels harder. The Tiny desk arrangement is very very close to the albums, differing in the strings only. And I consider the Desk version superior. The muted Tom-Tom's appear in both, and really add a dynamic element that pulls the listener even deeper. But there you'll discover this eventually when you work your way to the album cuts. I wager you'll also be surprised at how damned close she comes to hitting almost exactly the same when live to her recorded versions. Great review. Thanks for putting the time in.
I noted that a number of people are mentioning Kaleidoscope in the comments below as being very strong to them also. This is the best one out there for it ua-cam.com/video/imHkz5nD6gs/v-deo.html that was a live cut filmed for the video she released if you are looking for other things to move forward with reviewing.
@@bartlebyscrivener2980 This one was hiding on her own page so you probably just overlooked it. But so much of her stuff, and all her earlier stuff is scattered to the winds. There are a few people that have started to collect it, but seeing her full development as an artist is still tricky. I'm glad that you enjoyed the clip, it's superior to the album cut of Kaleidoscope in my opinion. Beautiful showcase of her ability. I do hope that at the end of Rise and Fall's cycle they try to push one of her ballads.
Thanks Tim, great reaction vid to Chappell at her most heartfelt and heartwrenching. I'll be watching all things Chappell you cover... and maybe some more Olivia, too, IDK. @@TimWelchVocalStudio there’s currently a (very dumb) conversation going on about gen z having no great vocalists like lady gaga or Adele for millennials. Not being on twitter is the right move.
Tim, at 19:00 you said something meaningful about great singing being "emotional expression" and "being a conduit for what the song is about; what you want people to feel...coming through you and just getting out of the way." True of all great artists, including the best actors. Often it seems like it's the other way around, where a singer doesn't so much respect the song (melody, form, intent) but is determined to make the song all about vocal acrobatics. Great video and love how plugged in you are at each moment; clearly your passion. Anyway, terrific Chappell Roan reaction videos -- keep them coming!
In The Heights!!!! I'm so proud I was able to guess it from the brief description you gave before you said it 😂 Great musical and I LOVE the song Breathe. I had never made the connection between California and Breathe!!
9:43 Well, Southern California does have a Mediterranean climate and we do have Beach lolol. Just goes to show how fitting the music is for the lyrical content~
I just subbed because I eventually wanna get back into music even though I can't sing a tune but also because I've finally after months of hearing about her are obsessed with Chappel Roan. You should react to the Kaleidoscope Official Life Performance on her UA-cam channel. It's left me stunned.
Video 2 of asking for a Renee Rapp reaction 🤩 I think you’ll love her! Snow Angel on SNL is an amazing performance… or World Burn from the Mean Girls musical is also 🤯
I'd love to hear your thoughts on her performance of "The Subway" at Outside Lands. (The full set is one youtuube video but someone posted the time stamps for the songs in the comments)
I'm here because I wanted to hear someone describe the "yodel step down" in the chorus. I could tell it was related to flipping between chest and head but it's SO FAST that my ear doesn't even register what's actually happening!
I’m no vocal coach so I can’t speak to how good she is there, but I feel like you would appreciate Olivia Rodrigo’s Tiny Desk(s). The most recent one has an orchestration of Vampire that I think is really smart and cool, plus she also has a band that seems all female and/or queer. Even if you don’t react to it, I just think you would like it!
Have you been introduced to Morrisette Amon yet? She's an INCREDIBLE Filipina singer/songwriter. Start with Rise Up or Never Enough performances on the wish bus. It is a radio studio on a bus that drives around while they are singing live. I would be really interested in seeing you break down her singing. ❤

normally i dislike slow songs like this (i listen to a lot of mindnumbing pop i guess you could call it normally lol) but every single slower song/ballad on her album i absolutely adore and they're actually some of my favs from the entire album. there's so much emotion in her vocals and it's so unique that, even though i don't relate to what the song is about, i still tear up almost every time i listen to it because you can hear the emotion there and her vocals are so beautiful. i've watched every reaction that you've done to chappell and tbh they're some of my favourites when it comes to watching vocal coach people react to her! i would love to see you react to her song kaleidoscope, it's one of my all time favourites from her album ❤❤

Great video and love how plugged in you are at each moment; clearly your passion. Anyway, terrific Chappell Roan reaction videos -- keep them coming!
Thanks! 🙏🏼 appreciate the comment.
Your reaction and analysis was beautiful. Subscribed!!
Thanks so much! Welcome. 🙏🏼
you're my new favorite reactor!
Aww thanks! 💛✨🙏🏼
In The Heights!!!! I'm so proud I was able to guess it from the brief description you gave before you said it 😂 Great musical and I LOVE the song Breathe. I had never made the connection between California and Breathe!!
Ahh, you got it! Nice job. 🙌🏼✨🔥
Just take baby steps towards getting back to music!
Video 2 of asking for a Renee Rapp reaction 🤩 I think you’ll love her! Snow Angel on SNL is an amazing performance… or World Burn from the Mean Girls musical is also 🤯
Thanks!
I second this!!
re: studios - My Kink is Karma pleeeease!!!
this song hits me right in the chest every single time. love your reactions! can't wait for more
💛✨🙏🏼
i love chappell roan, id love for you to react to Aurora, i think her and aurora would make a good song together as well
I'd love to hear your thoughts on her performance of "The Subway" at Outside Lands. (The full set is one youtuube video but someone posted the time stamps for the songs in the comments)
Coming soon!
I was there and it made me cry
I'm here because I wanted to hear someone describe the "yodel step down" in the chorus. I could tell it was related to flipping between chest and head but it's SO FAST that my ear doesn't even register what's actually happening!
Yes, very astute! It’s crazy fast.
Do react to casual on tiny desk, fantastic performance
I’m no vocal coach so I can’t speak to how good she is there, but I feel like you would appreciate Olivia Rodrigo’s Tiny Desk(s). The most recent one has an orchestration of Vampire that I think is really smart and cool, plus she also has a band that seems all female and/or queer. Even if you don’t react to it, I just think you would like it!
Great idea! 💛✨🙏🏼
I wanna see that too!!
My student Camille just performed on the wishbus!!
I would love to see you react to guilty pleasure by Chappell, so much. yodeling it is incredible
Coming!
No one mentions the nod to the song California Dreamin
You've got to review Love Me Anyway by Chappell. It's slept on, but SO good!
Adding it to the list thank you!
I hear you, I was going to setup a studio in LA but I dislike LA so much I ultimately shut the idea down. Everything you said. 💛✨🙏🏼
@@TimWelchVocalStudio i moved from growing up in Ohio to Alaska and then Oregon.
All over the west coast there is this toxic positivity
I'm not a student but I can do this song pretty well and would love to work with you on it!
Reach out! My schedule is pretty tight but maybe there’s a window that lines up. 💛✨🙏🏼
can you react to sabrina carpenter performing "please please please" and "good luck babe" at the bbc live lounge?
I love your Chappell reactions!!!can you do naked in manhattan!!!
On the list!
@@TimWelchVocalStudio yay!!!
Not me listening to this on a medeteranean beach...
lol!
normally i dislike slow songs like this (i listen to a lot of mindnumbing pop i guess you could call it normally lol) but every single slower song/ballad on her album i absolutely adore and they're actually some of my favs from the entire album. there's so much emotion in her vocals and it's so unique that, even though i don't relate to what the song is about, i still tear up almost every time i listen to it because you can hear the emotion there and her vocals are so beautiful.
i've watched every reaction that you've done to chappell and tbh they're some of my favourites when it comes to watching vocal coach people react to her! i would love to see you react to her song kaleidoscope, it's one of my all time favourites from her album ❤❤
On the list, thanks! 💛✨🙏🏼
