Yep, having watched 30 to 40 full-album reaction vids... apparently that's my hobby now!... that one-two ballad punch to the gut and lower that is Picture You + Kaleidoscope has highly empathetic reactors losing it. It's not about being brave for her. She makes those choices in part based upon her vast knowledge of popular music. This album references Patsy Cline, Rocky Horror, The Mammas and the Pappas, Lana, Madonna, Gaga, and on and on and on. Watch her sing her own songs when she was sixteen. She's scary. Who brings all those performers to Tiny Desk? On Pink Pony Club she replaces the guitar solo with violin. I could go on, but the point is there is intentionality, a self awareness, in what she does, every little thing. Love your vocal analysis.

Chappel is the only artist that sounds like an old recording (I mean it in a good way!). When she sings "down my chest, when I thiiink of you..." at the beginning (minute 1.37), I literally thought I was listening to a decades old recording. And I have never had that feeling/image with any other artist. She's incredible.

I don't know of one. But I discovered her only in February through her Colbert show perf. of Red Wine Supernova. In March I bought the cd and a ticket to her show here in Richmond. And have listened to relatively little else since. But she has dedicated fans that go back to 2017 and earlier. She was playing last fall, first leg of the Midwest Princess tour, to shows of still just 100s to 1.5k people (in Richmond in May we were 6.5k, but could have sold 4 or 5k more), and those early adopters may know of a name that I don't. Enjoy! Because song for song there hasn't been an album that approaches Midwest Princess in decades. I have trouble thinking of one that does, of original music/no covers, period.
