I ran into Jeff Parker at the Book Fair in L.A. this past spring. He was walking around with his daughter and it was packed. I was walking toward him and because of the crowds almost ran into him, which is how I recognized him. I just blurted out "are you Jeff Parker from Tortoise?" and he said he was. He stopped and chatted for a minute as I told him what a fan I was, and he introduced his daughter and signed a fair brochure for me. He said Tortoise was indeed working on new music and he hoped it would be out "soon". Super cool and accommodating guy. Hope we get us some new Tortoise in the new year...
+Douglas Stephens Cool story. . They have no other equal musically or creatively. They just don't seek out any fame or fortune so they are very modest guys in person.
I left a comment on this same video roughly 2.5 years ago praising Tortoise and this performance. I had only been listening to them for a few months, but I fell in love with them hard. 2.5 years later I know every Tortoise song like the back of my hand, and they can still give me goosebumps. Remarkable group of musicians.
Tortoise is pretty much the only band that I would literally kill to see live. They replicate their songs so wonderfully. I've proudly been a Tortoise fan for years, and have no intention to stop, ever.
Amen, brother! I've been a fan for a long time as well. Post rock, in general. You listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Isotope 217? or Mogwai?
wow, i cant believe ive only just found this band this very second. this music is so beautiful. really beautiful melodies(i think thats how you spell it anyway).
Such great drummers, they sound so smooth. Even the parts where they are both soloing sound great, it doesn't sound aggressive, it sounds like a collage of sound, like they're painting a texture over the music.
"Swung from the Gutters" is sweepingly gorgeous! I've been lucky enough to catch these guys live about 5 times, including Lounge Ax in Chicago. This is really a stand-out set. So much space. Thank you, Tortoise!
Stunning set, really consumate pros. My main criticism of Tortoise is still that there's no 'hit' for easy access for the casual listener; with a set like this, who cares?
Holy fuck they murdered Swung From The Gutters in the middle of it, but it was interesting in its own way, I definitely didn't expect that free jazz blow-out and it made my heart race
We just saw Tortoise in Vancouver Last week, We were tired from work and had work the nxt day,Tortoise picked us up and dropped us in our beds. I woke up with Tortoise playing in my head that morn. Truly great simple music. Thanks Tortoise.
listening to tortoise changed many things... seeing them live changed everything... Thanks Theorem, for reminding me one of the best moments my ears and eyes have ever lived!!! (if you guys haven't seen "reach the rock" GO RENT IT YESTERDAY)
Stretch (you are alright), The Lithium Stiffs, and Crest are from "It's All Around You". They are the 1st, 4th, and 5th songs, respectively. The 2nd and 3rd songs are Ten Day Interval, and Swung From The Gutters. They are off "TNT", which is my favorite album by them. The last song is Seneca, which is off of "Standards".
When I worked as a cashier at Borders in Chicago, I was fortunate enough to have Jeff Parker in my line. We chatted briefly, but it was super busy. very cool guy!
Well, from Portugal, i can only say, that i met, TORTOISE, just a few days ago, and...what a great band! Refreshing sound, with the guitars in their place...good sound!
Didn't know them, but they got a BIG fan now! After listening the second tune I felt like hearing Steve Reich on a Rock band! Great! I'm a fan now! Great band!!!
Wow. This is really great. I used to see Jeff Parker with the New Horizons Ensemble in Chicago in the early 90's. Always loved his playing. I had lost track of that Chicago scene for a while after I moved away. This group is really amazing.
"Stretch" - It's All Around You "Ten Day Interval" - TNT "Swung from the Gutters" - TNT "The Lithium Stiffs" - It's All Around You "Crest" - It's All Around You "Seneca" - Standards
the first unknown was "Stretch (You Are All Right)" the 2nd unknown was "The Lithium Shifts" and "Crest" (joined together), all from the album "It's All Around You". Amazing.
When you look up "Real Deal", Tortoise is listed for music. Live it's like they reach into your heart and brain at the same time and flip the Tortoise switches on and you'll never be the same musically. Never.
Agreed, I have to see them live. This is another band I discovered by accident and totally love!! P.S The Grateful Dead was never this dynamic, talented, or even interesting.
Was zekerst fijn! Mooie set. Deze long version riekt naar averageness, maar redt het met briljantie van de musici in kwestie. Watching this as I type. En R maakt op dit moment zijn schatten open (Japanse persing plus triple album) Soon to be heard. SIE!
It's crazy how Tortoise sounds like the most technical band but also the most chillin band at the exact same time
10 years after it was recorded and still cant get past this set :D
I just remembered it!

thats one of the things i like about them! that they're very down to earth individuals and their music reflects that!

Binging Tortoise tonight and found this set!! So wild this post is from 15 years ago in 2006 youtube was not even a year old yet.. trails blazed

Just realised I’ve been coming back to this clip for the last 18 years. Tortoise was the soundtrack to my twenties. Magic happened in that live set
If I could choose any band to be a member of, Tortoise would be it.
wow, i cant believe ive only just found this band this very second. this music is so beautiful.
really beautiful melodies(i think thats how you spell it anyway).
Swung from the gutters is the best song in the world!! Thanks for this vid! I love the scene with the drummers at 12:01 Its fantastic!
Such great drummers, they sound so smooth. Even the parts where they are both soloing sound great, it doesn't sound aggressive, it sounds like a collage of sound, like they're painting a texture over the music.

Best version of Swung From The Gutters ever. If you make music and are not influenced by this band you suck.
Stunning set, really consumate pros. My main criticism of Tortoise is still that there's no 'hit' for easy access for the casual listener; with a set like this, who cares?

So glad this has been on here for so long (7 years now). This is one of the first videos I made playlist for. I think I called it "amazing."
@JinjaB123 Tortoise is a melodic and beautiful ambient musical group. Slipknot sounds good for metal. Different color horse.

The show they've played here in Brazil is in my top 10 list, for sure!
Tortoise are awesome! Apparently they're working on a new album that might come at the end of the year. Can't wait.
I watched 20 minutes of this, this was really good music.
So cool. I love David Pajo, he's really left his mark on music.
