Steve Lillywhite! Can't say I'm a huge fan of his massive & impressive body of work (apart from Peter Gabriel 3 which is mindblowing), but he does love a chat which is always fantastic to listen to - even if there is a slight revisionist edge to the tales! Excellent stuff, much appreciated!

46:50 - Geddy's vocals do sound amazing on those mid-Eighdies Rush albums, though. That's when his voice had been at its peak, and he'd also stopped singing in said screechy ultra-high style.
That album, 'Grace Under Pressure', was my very first impression of Rush's music (albeit only in '89), and it got me instantly hooked to them, despite Steve's absence 😁
Whose work with bands like U2, XTC, Big Country, etc I do love too, though 😊
But it also was meant to go that way, seeing that the Simple Minds gig was where he'd met Kirsty 🙂

49:29 - Yeah, I'd seen those same photos on social media of Shane MacGowan in hospital, too. So this podcast was recorded only days before his sad passing
    😌🙏

Great episode. The dumping of Rush situation sounded pretty unprofessional from this interview. No wonder it’s still talked about 40 years on.

Yeah, not great, but he must've also followed his heart, I assume.
I wonder if that Rush album would've had an even bigger impact on me, with _him_ as the producer?! I'd already loved a lot of the stuff he'd done, especially with U2 and Big Country. And the album in question, 'Grace Under Pressure', was actually my very first impression of Rush's music, after a good friend had given me his LP in '89 to check out, and I instantly became a fan (and also for life, as it would turn out) 🙂

@@mightyV444I guess it's all water under the bridge now (or at least it should be!). Rush were an incredible band and also became a huge part of my music life since ATWAS came to my attention as a teenager. How lucky we were....

@@philwestwater5020 - Oh yes, absolutely! 😀 'All The World's A Stage' is the oldest Rush album in my collection, by the way; I have pretty much every album up to and including 'Vapor Trails', with 'Exit...Stage Left' being my favourite 🙂

Steve Lillywhite produced some amazing bands and his work with U2 is awesome but he let himself down with his account of almost producing Rush. I read Geddy Lee's autobiography and he mentioned the dumping situation which left Rush in an awkward spot. The album that Steve was due to produce became the brilliant Grace Under Pressure and was produced by Peter Henderson (not Collins who who Steve said on the podcast, Collins did a few subsequent albums). Rush don't get the recognition they deserve. for being amazing musicians especially live. Guy talks about difficulty level for singing bassists - Lee has to be the best ever and he throws keyboards and foot pedals in for good measure...

Yup, Steve's 'Got to follow your heart' bullshit doesn't excuse dumping a band 2 weeks before recording starts!!! Very fun guy, but obviously not very trustworthy.... Hey ho that's the music biz!
