    Great review with signature NPI style. I couldn't agree more with your comment about how satisfying it is to slot a worker into an exosuit and then smack it down in a worker placement location. Anachrony is the pinnacle of board gaming for me at the moment: brilliant theme which enriches every mechanism, great components which are satisfying to wield, huge game with optional modules for variability and replay value, and incredible game play with lots of ways to pursue victory. On a related note, I listened to this nice podcast where one of the hosts suggested Anachrony is more complex than Madeira. That guy is mad, Anachrony is far more accessible than Madeira. And finally, nice pin.

      Boy, if you like what the game offers so far, you may want to snag FoT or even the Infinity Box. I'm impatiently waiting for my late pledge to arrive, and I hope it's here before NY's uwu

    Thank you for reviewing this game! I've been waiting for a good review of it ever since my Kickstarter Leader edition (with all the exosuits and numerous expansion modules) arrived in February. It was worth the wait. Really pleased that you guys like this game as it's already a firm favourite of mine and I've not played it nearly enough times yet. I hope your enthusiasm encourages many more people to discover this game, and in particular to persist and overcome the hurdles of the high-level concepts and slightly complex rules to reach the elegant, immersively thematic and simply fun game underneath it all!

    Thanks Efka for sharing this video ! I am so jealous of all those who got the game on KS. It is frustrating that the retail version isn't as sexy. At the time, I hesitated to back This War Of Mine or Anachrony which were on at the same time, and decided to go for the former, which did sound like a good idea at the time. I hope TWOM will deliver too !

    First off. I like your videos a lot. It's obvious you put a lot of time and effort into them. I appreciate your in depth comments about Anachrony. Especially when you mentioned that it would benefit from some editing. I think that's how you put it. It looks to me that they added some features and/or mechanisms to make the game more grand. But, sometimes less is more. I was on the fence about getting the game, because it has a neat theme, different worker roles, and an interesting solo game. But, I don't like to just take an action for the sake of taking an action. A game can suffer from not having enough going on or from having too much going on. I don't think Anachrony is in the Goldilocks zone for me. Especially if the game is expensive, has a huge footprint, and takes a long time to set up.

    I played this at a meetup. From setup to putting it away was 4.5 hours. We also just had the retail game (no miniatures). By the end I quite enjoyed it. Would definitely play again.

      It was closer to 5.5 hours for us, but most of us didnt know how to play so explaining the game took about an hour.

    This latest video by NPI looks a bit different, but when it comes to Anachrony as a game I can certainly see where Efka is coming from. I love how the game looks on his table, but it's big and has a lot of parts to set up and the retail version doesn't have as nice of a table presence. Minis add one great thing to board games: tactility. It's just nice to hold them, touch them, put them down. Especially bigger and solid ones like Anachrony has. Very cool that they use slots inside of the minis for the workers, too! The components are just cleverly designed and I really respect that. But ultimately, this is a game I can't get a good idea of from just watching a review, playthrough or rules explanation. I'll want to play it myself. Most likely I won't be buying it even after that, but I might still enjoy it.

    Loved the editing! Seems pretty epic. What's been your experience with the play time? I went for it post-Kickstarter and picked up the miniatures as well, but now I have to sit down and learn the dang thing. I also have no room for the giant boxes on my shelf...

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  7 років тому

      I hesitate to comment on playtime because every time I had to teach it and it just takes a while. A really long while. I guess if you discount the teaching and setup it should fall within 2 hours.

    • @wyattfertig3026
      @wyattfertig3026 7 років тому

      Okay, I was a little worried based on the size and complexity that I was looking at a five hour experience haha 2+ hrs is pretty manageable

    • @adamfrench1914
      @adamfrench1914 6 років тому

      It depends on how many players. I have only played it 3 times with others and have found so far that it has taken an hour per player excluding the teaching time.

    Great review, as usual. One small caveat though, you ditch the variant where you get to draft the End Game Condition Cards but my group has found it to be the single best element to help mitigate the arguably unbalanced evac conditions (Salvation's Path A evac cond. + total sum of time travel ability, I'm looking at you). You should give it a try.
    Also, you mention a couple of the optional modules actually made the game even more satisfying to you... could you tell us which one(s)? Thanks!!!

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  7 років тому +3

      I suppose it's nice that you can patch potential imbalances with these minor addons but I kinda wish the design was tighter to begin with, rather than relying on extraneous solutions.
      We enjoyed the alternate timeline module because it adds just as much to the base game as it subtracts. The Guardians of the Council was interesting too. Doomsday module can go burn in a fiery hell.

    I wanted to play Anachrony in the U.K. but I was away out of the country in New York having my holidays in the sun, despite the game having no problems, I have no feelings about the game and it's left me feeling somewhat pretty vacant. You may call me a liar but I give this game a seventeen out of twenty, the minis have nice features and fine bodies but I'm not going to E.M.Igrate from the UK to the U.S., I will always return to England, god save the queen everyone.

  • @bgm-1961

    Another great video. But to say that the game is rules heavy is like saying that the operating manual for your car is too heavy. Despite the number of pages, there's not a whole lot to learn in order to be able to play (drive).

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  7 років тому +6

      Well, we try to make our videos in a way that it wouldn't mislead people who are newer to the hobby. No matter how light or heavy the car manual is, I wouldn't put a person without a driving license behind the wheel of a light freighter truck, at least without a fair warning first.

    • @bgm-1961
      @bgm-1961 7 років тому

      Yeah, I guess the point is that this is NOT a "gateway" game! There are some brainiacs in my MeetUp group that relish heavy games such as The Gallerist, Le Havre, Hans Tuetonica, etc. But they run when I pull out Anachrony! They say it looks too heavy. So there's something to be said for needing a driver's license first, before driving this game.

    At 4:50... I've played this game about 10-12 times and I've never noticed whether or not the Genius was a man or a women. When we no longer care whether it's a man or a women who has the job, or IOW, when we're equally minded over either possibility, then by definition that's when we stop noticing. So that people find it necessary to notice is NOT genius.

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  5 років тому +5

      Cool. And maybe if we elevate those underrepresented we can get to this utopian dream you are describing. Until then you'll have to put up with it.

    • @bgm-1961
      @bgm-1961 5 років тому

      Fair enough. I guess my point is that if we (all) stop making a *point* of noticing, we'll get to the end goal sooner. End results always take hold more effectively when they occur organically rather than through harping or force. I appreciate the position you're expressing and sadly have to agree with it. I'm upset that such a position even exists in our society, is all.
      Sorry... Didn't mean to go off the topic of your video, except you did throw that quick social comment in there. And I went down the rabbit hole by commenting on your comment! Regardless, it's a great video and this is the 2nd time I've watched it. I watched it about a year ago and didn't even notice your comment that time. I guess I'm more sensitive to the issue now.

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  5 років тому +8

      @@bgm-1961 if we all stop talking about it then surely we maintain the status quo. Nothing changes. The world doesn't magically get better. Also, there is no 'force' here or harping. This is a nice thing in a nice game that got noticed.

    My mate bought it on KS and now is molesting us with it, because - I dare to say - he's enjoying it even more than your past Efka. Meanwhile, I would love to love this game, but... I cannot. I kinda feel like some blonde queen wanting to make with her oldest companion, but then having a crash on some mindless hotbed.
    I do find Anachrony and its designers "commendable" (to borrow your words) for their effort to combine so many various bits and tricks. But then I find it being... hmm, lacking in each segment. As engine builder it's not as good as, lets say, Scythe. It is nowhere near as elegant as Vinhos in its 2016 version; and sometimes it gets frustrating with the decision making, which gets wasted anyway because f.e. the game has just drafted wrong kind of resources this round. In terms of "satisfactory mind-boggling" it falls flat compared to Gallerist, just to name one.
    To sum up, to me Anachrony feels like super extra deluxe supreme pizza, stuffed with every ingredient the kitchen had; with so many flavours, it then leaves none particular one in your mouth. I'll keep eating this pizza, even if only for sheer joy of sliding my workers into those gargoyle-suits... but simple pizza Caprese or Parma will remain my favourite.

    I have complete collections both their games and my biggest complaint is that they are complex for the sake of complexity. They are the exact opposite of elegant games. They truly need an editor to trim the game down to a complex game that is elegant. Make the rule book 100% understandable in

    Really? I found it to be very shallow and themeless, practically all numbers and symbols. Doesnt help the board is fairly ugly as well
