BGG Review list - boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/17... - Ігри
at 10:00 got the 7 points that you shouldn't. bonus is for completing all areas of one color.
Well blimey, that one is a booboo we made, but an interesting booboo at that. It's is less of a race I suppose.
No Pun Included still a bit of a race - those 7 put bonuses come into play towards the end of the game and you'll see people racing to get them at that point
No Pun Included Truthfully it's more of a race because you must think strategically the whole game what you are racing for at different points (and how that plays out).
I don't see this as a race at all. Castles of Burgundy is more of a mix between tactics and strategy, where while you still need to look for the long run, the best is always to go with the flow and adapt to what the game offers you during your turn and your roll.
Slander! Castles was bumped out of the top 10 by Terraforming Mars. I bumped out Puerto Rico.
Yet Castles is eleven now. Regardless of the sequence of events - YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.
I'M SORRY! I'M A MONSTER!
I can't believe you two still talk after Isaac caused Simon to get fired from his job.
It's back in the top ten now.
Your reviews are fantastic! Thank you for putting all this time into them!
Thank you so much!
Another excellent review. Love the insight into the gameplay value vs the cost!
I absolutely LOVE this game! This is one of my top 5!!
It's about Burgundy on account of the German title: "Die Burgen von Burgund". It's poetry.
Did that creepy stalker letter say "Wil Wheaton" at the bottom?? LOL! Great video. I adore this game.
It's always so much fun seeing people's shelves with games. I see NPI has Ora & Labora, which is a fantastic game! And Concordia I hope to pick up soon as I hear great things about it
the world needs more heroes like you, NPI
I've just bought this game and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna love it! Regarding the artwork vs. gameplay matter: me and my SO are quite new to modern board games and so far our favourite one is definitely 7 Wonders Duel, which aesthetically is much more curated and appealing than CoB for sure. But to be honest the game play in 7WD becomes so tense most of the times that we never really think about the artwork; all I see are icons, resources, points. And what drives the emotions are not the pretty images but the cuthroat strategies and the last second wins. As a consumer though, even if it costs "just" 20 quids, the idea of buying a poor quality phisical object made me hesitate quite a bit.
Duuuuuuude this review is fire. I am just starting getting into board games and doing a lot of research to spend my money wisely and gosh this game got me on the edge! Definitely making this a priority to buy
Burgundy was my gateway to medium-weight eurogames and point salads. My mind was blown by all the options and paths that diverge from each choice. After the first game, I immediately wanted to play again.....and again......and again. After the first few games, I looked up Trajan and got into that - which was my gateway into heavy eurogames. Both Burgundy and Trajan have held up over the years as the best feld games in my opinion
So now that the KS is out for Castles of Burgundy: Special Edition are you spending more than £50 on it? I am! Love your videos btw, keep doing what you guys do!
Loved the CAH review! 😂
*Not actually about castles* - brilliant!
I got this cheap as well. Great game! But man does it NEED an artistic/graphic facelift or re-theme. Something more exciting, but still grounded in a real world reality we all can relate to. The Kaiju of Burgundy perhaps...?
Aaron Natera definitely would rebuy if the game had an artistic facelift. As is it just looks so bland.....
I don't know what this box does to people that they all seem to say 'it's fine, it looks fine, it's a great thing'...
but it's a disgrace to have this production quality - and it's not a matter of production price - Fun Forge and iello make games with a similar price point but so, SO much better components and art!
Nice review. I'd love a deluxe version of CoB, myself.
Mitchlav Some sort of copyright issue is why we can't get a deluxe version.
5 years later, and your wish has come true!
Also at 10:00, not only do you not get the 5/6/7 tile, but you should score 1 more point for the size of the region completed according to the chart next to the goods section of the player board for a total of 11 points, not 17.
I did indeed although that was an omission by neglect rather than misinformation. Not that it makes it any better. Can I have a redo of that scene? I just want a redo.
To be fair, my wife and I played the bonus tiles exactly the same way for months before realizing we had it wrong.
Me and my wife's favourite game!
So did you manage to beat Uprising at Legendary? It's quite challenging.
One of my friends loves this game and says a lot of how we should play it some time.
I watched and read many, many reviews of this game.
I actually even bought the game, unpacked it and checked the rules a few months ago.
And I still have no finest idea what Castles of Burgundy is about.
Maybe I should just leave it here, collecting dust, till one day, long after I will be gone, somebody will unearth this elegant game of a more civilized age o.o
I play this game many times in TTS. Very good one.
For me, it's not theme that brings a game to life, it's the competition between players who like competition. As you say, Feld games and other "lifeless" Euros are for "people who like to meet each other on the battlefield of wits." It's very intense to either win or lose, when you've played a good game.
The individual player boards are right at about A4 size. This is significant. There are four copies of one player board and one copy of seven other player boards included in the game. We don't like to play an unbalanced game with different boards. But you can just stick the things in your basic home scanner & color printer, use decently heavy paper, and you can make multiple correct-sized copies (the tiles fit) of the other boards, so that increases variability quite a bit. The other boards are fun, when done this way.
I really like your channel! Great Job. I noticed Kanban on your shelf. Do you think you guys will review Kanban?
We do on the Last Place podcast - here's a handy link ua-cam.com/video/_7s0l85FIAo/v-deo.html
My apologizes for not being specific. I meant a video review on it specifically, like this one on Castles. I heard the podcast that you mentioned. It was a great, and I totally agree with you one the rule book (that's probably why I play it online). I fell in love with the board. Some say it is really busy, but I found it fascinating. Keep up the great work!
We won't be covering Kanban in a video format unless something drastically changes (like a second edition).
No worries. Thanks for the quick replies! and again Keep up the great work!
You could also try his game _Rialto_, a Venice-based mixture of card drafting, majorities and engine building. I mean building building (tee-hee). Also, points.
I think I've hit peak Feld for the next few months.
TRAJAN.
No it has mancala and mancala hurts my brain.
Honestly, I played this game and loved it. I never once considered the theme. I must prefer gameplay the most, but now that I'm aware of the poor theming, I am a bit disappointed in myself for not noticing.
Why do you have the Terra Mystica board hanging on a wall?
Why not, I ask you? Why not?
Mostly cause I really like that board, the expansion came with the fixed version and it's no longer necessary. And besides, it's detachable.
I wouldn't say it's cutthroat. It's more like drafting. You have to set priorities and obviously people will want the same things you want so you'll fight over high priority tiles but that's what always happens with drafting. I also have to say that the amazing thing about this game is that even in this age of ridiculously overproduced kickstarter games, an ugly, themeless box of thin paper sheets remains of the most popular and highly regarded games of all time (and for good reason, it's a fantastic game).
I never minded the art work. I dub CoB 'An Instant Classic', and it looks the part.
Hey, i really enjoyed your video, but i can help my self that you are completely coping a review stile of SU&SD particularly Quintin. But you are doing it so good xD
I saw your subliminal message - Cards Against Humanity. Now I want to buy it.
fuck.
There's no better adjective than something being "pants" - love you guys and your reviews!
"This game looks pants" LMFAO
Why is this review hidden? :O
Efka, what have they done to you and your beautiful beard?!
Were they threatening to never release CO2 2nd edition or cancel new Gloomhaven KS and take your copy?
Or was it a fan of CAH keeping a knife next to your neck and you had to force your way out cutting things on the way?
Look, I'll say this once. I chose the wrong length on the beard trimmer. I am not perfect (despite appearances). It will grow back eventually.
oh dear... the inevitable threat of trimmers ^^' happened to me a few times... including the incident when it was easier just to shave head as well ><
stay strong! hair fairy will fix it eventually X)
Someone comes home @10:07 ?
Neighbour's cat jumped onto the window sill.
Points make pets? I don't get it :(
See I wasn't lying.
I'd happily pay $50 for a better quality version of this game. To me it's about the best two player euro out there. I've played my first copy to death as it packs small and goes on trips and have a 20th anniversary copy for home. And you are right, regardless of there being dice, the better player normally wins.
Are those the slimmest cardboard tokens of all time?
so, the beard? what happend?
let's not. it will grow back.
beards make prizes
@@coreymayo8321 I thought beards made points.
fast forward to 2022 and now the upgraded edition costs $150.
Ugh yeah, I guess I asked for this? Except I didn't. Except... I dunno I like that it's pretty now?
@@NoPunIncluded no, it wasn't meant as jab at you at all. just stating the irony of a game that's kind of famous for being good but ugly turning into a beautiful expensive one.
You WILL play this game.
haha youre awesome
If we must have a thematic and a nice design to enjoy a board game, then we truly lost the purpose of what a board game is.
This game is one of the best board games on the market still today. And no matter if I played twenty games, I still lose against people who are at their 1st 2nd or 3rd play.
Many other board games you reviewed before suffer of that problem (Scythe and probably all of Rosenberg's games), and yet you mention that issue with this one. I think it is unfair for you to do so.
I understand you wanted to be critical about the game though. But by pointing these issues instead of others, I feel that you are giving right to people to demand for better components or aesthetics, when we should just play a game for what matters, aka its mechanics and challenges it offers to our brains.
Anyway... I enjoyed your review as always; I just disagreed with it.
Thanks for doing this and keep up the good work :)
Hey Vincent,
Thanks for your comment. There are a few things going on here that I feel I need to address.
I am not sure if I am reading this right, but I assume that your issue is with me mentioning that experienced players are more likely to win Castles of Burgundy. If I read that wrong, I apologise for bringing it up in this comment. But if I didn't, I invite you to watch our review of Scythe again, where we talk about it at length as an issue. But more importantly, I did not talk about that as an issue with Castles of Burgundy at all, merely an observation and a statement. I don't see where the unfairness comes from.
I would also like to invite you to not get upset about criticisms of artwork in games. I understand where you are coming from. There's a lot of tension and friction in board game communities as the hobby grows and it evolves into something new. Artwork is often used to market games (and for good reason) , and it might feel superfluous, but whilst it doesn't necessarily subtract or add to the gameplay itself, it does serve a very important function. It gets people excited to play games. If nothing else, the current Kickstarter for the re-implementation of Brass proves that good artwork and good gameplay can co-exist together. And just think about how many people this new artwork will get to play Brass, a heavy game that they wouldn't have touched otherwise. In short, what I am trying to say is that there's no reason to be snobbish and elitist, just enjoy the fact that more people are getting into games, and more people will enjoy playing the same games you do.
TL;DR: "Your old road is rapidly agin'. Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand for the times they are a-changin'." - Bob Dylan
NPI - you are right that artwork matters. It can make the difference between being drawn to or put off from a game. Theme works the same way. However, both are subjective. I don't find the CoB artwork that bad. It's not beautiful or elegant, but it is functional and gives the game a lighthearted feel. If CoB looked like the new Brass, it would feel heavy, dark and depressing (to me). For example, I would probably like the gameplay of Scythe better if the artwork did not look so heavy and gothic. But, of course, most people disagree with me on that. The impact of art is subjective, and that is okay. Better themes and artwork are major contributors to the rise in boardgame popularity. Abstract games like chess are not driving the hobby. I'll play Rococo or Grand Austria Hotel rather than chess any day of the week. In fact, I do.
BTW, Grand Austria Hotel would make a great NPI review!
Very well said. Re: GAH, the ship has sailed on that one sadly.
Hi again! Thanks for the reply by the way and I apologize if I sounded upset or mad. This wasn't the case nor my intention.
I would say firstly that what brings me into a game is much more related to mechanics than minis. The thematics are only present so that we get an incentive to play the game.
Have you played The Others? Great minis and impressive artwork! BUT the gameplay was so weak that I realized I was just moving plastic figures on cardboard only after 30 minutes of gaming!
No matter what the theme is, I never feel I am the head of a Celtics tribe, or I'm in a dystopian sci-fi cyberpunk world War 1, or I'm a dude who's running for his life against zombies. However what brings me into a game is the mental challenge, the discussions and the puzzles a game offers.
The reason why there is a revival towards board game is because of the new and innovative mechanics, not because of an aesthetics lift up of old games.
I work in a boardgame pub where I teach boardgame to customers. More often than not, people are coming back because they enjoyed the intellectual challenge games bring, not because they are excited about the look.
And while it's true that gamers are more and more demanding of aesthetics games, we should not fall into the trap neither. A game should be appreciated for what's inside the box and not for what it looks from the outside.
If we let ourselves judge a game by what it looks, then we're no better than people judging books by their cover.
As for CoB, it surely is a more or less nice-looking game. It would be probably a good idea to even revamp it so people could be drawn to it! However, it shouldn't be a prerequisite to judge about the financial value of a game.
Once again, I apologize if I look harsh and this is not my intention. I just feel that this needed to be addressed. Even though there are plenty of games out there, I've never found a game as elegant and fluid, and yet, overly so simple for its depth like CoB. And that's what for me shined the most in your review :)
I really enjoy what you do and I'm very sorry to have been troublesome. I'm very lucky to have the chance discussing with you!
RADIOHEAD!!!
I rather liked the aesthetic of Castles of Burgundy :(
How dare you talk about my grandmother like that.
It is not your grandmother per se, it is everyone's communal concept of "grandmother."
How dare you refer to my grandmother as communal.
And you put her in quotes! She didn't raise my Mom just to end up surrounded by quotes.
Haha and people paying 100+ now for the Deluxe Version :)
Of course I want to watch a whole video about this; experience has told me NEVER to listen to top lists.
What do you mean, everything is good, there is no poverty and everything is OK ??? WTF?There are other people outside of USA and UK...
Sarcasm mate, sarcasm.
