Why is it that you guys always cover the anime that I've watched growing up that nobody talks about anymore? We just innately have the same tastes I suppose. This is the channel for me.
Bruh I thought i was special for having seen yu yu Hakusho, GITS, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun...this is like learning calculus compared to the Algebra i just listed lol. I enjoyed this video
@@OtherL yeah I've watched some weird esoteric stuff growing up... mainly on obscure tv channels in which anime was airing. The really old shit. TMI: But, wicked city gave me my first awkward boner 🤣. The snake lady on the pool table having a bottle shoved down her throat as she gagged on it. I was so young I didn't know what the hell I was feeling lol.
Whoa! Yea I remember thinking the spider lady was pretty hot until she turned into a monster.
That ending was basically "I have to go now, my planet needs me."
At this point it is confirmed we will NEVER be able to recapture the aesthetic of mid 80's to 90's anime
Urusei Yatsura was recently revived. Something I could not believe. Even with a modern animation spin, it taps into that old school vibe we remember
I actually own a physical copy of this movie, long story. I'd completely forgotten what it was like, though, having only watched it like once over 10 years ago, so thanks.
I own an illegally downloaded flv file that I got from a torrent site like a decade ago lol
I was thinking, about the religious imagery during the sex scene, maybe it is meant to represent what the best of humanity CAN BE. This is what I mean: The Alien woman says that her people wanted to see if humanity was ready to join them in the stars. They took our memories and we failed the test. So why was she still on Earth? To find a suitable candidate to mate with so she could take a part of humanity with her, to her people. Perhaps the Mary and Jesus imagery is meant to represent the child that will be born from her union with Wateri.
I thought the same, besides my own personal take that maybe Jesus was also implanted here by an advanced civilization which would have had no problem impregnating a virgin with an advanced gene pool baby of their own
Watched this so many years ago and am a huge fan. It was weirdly pieced together but very intriguing nonetheless. Also, wth was up with that robot? It just couldn't leave well enough alone 🤣
I wish Bonsai Pop had Netflix's "choose something for me" feature so I could play a random movie and get my brain melted with complete surprise.
One of my favorite oldies! As an oldster… I miss the good old days of anime like this! Very nostalgic.
This looks like exactly the peak weird/classic anime I need in my life! Thanks for the rec guys
13:54 "watoru is unphased" that line made me laugh way harder than i should have😂😂😂
When i watched this decade ago.. I love it.. It had that perfect mix of weird and socio symbolisim it was so good..
I love this channel, y'all the best!
Back to the roots with this one. I love this crazy kind of movies. They always left you wondering. Great vídeo!
Back in the early 2000s when Cinemax ran weird anime movies at like 2 in the morning, I watched this. It was something different I'll give it that. I was still an anime caterpillar not yet exploring stuff beyond the standards of what was on Toonami, so it was quite the treat to see...still really freaking weird though. But a good weird like "Wow, anime can be like this? I want to see more."
Other stuff I saw on weird 2 AM Cinemax: Black Magic M-66, Eiken, X/1999, This weird combat anime where a guy's signature move was severing optical nerves, Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman, 3x3 Eyes and some other stuff I probably forgot.
This is one of those real forgotten gems. Might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I like the experimentation that they had going on there.
This was one of the first anime I watched as a kid and I remember loving it. Can't believe I haven't watched it since, gotta remedy that asap
Armitage III, wild old anime i saw on late late tv in like 1998. Its kinda like this where the plot is undecipherable but it oozes cool and violence
Mike: She realizes the old guy is her dad...
UA-cam: GO TO COMMERCIAL!! GO TO COMMERCIAL!!!
You've no idea how much I love the fact that my man here loves and respects Yoshiaki Kawajiri. I hope he one day covers his other films and OVAs.
And you're always using music from Dead or Alive Volleyball Xtreme 3! Truly, a man of culture. I salute you, sir!
@@BonsaiPop Same here. At least 700 hours of DOAX3 across Vita and Switch!
Hell yeah. I love movies/shows that leave you feeling the literal phrase “what the f***”. ❤
The VHS for this series was ALWAYS on the shelf when I went looking for new anime to check out, but I always passed it by for ... literally anything else (like re-watching Ninja Scroll for the 4th time).
But I finally checked it out this year and my experience was exactly the same as yours! The "concept" IS the anime, that's it. Even if there were deeper themes, it doesn't do much with it. But damn, it really is pure, concentrated 90s OVA aesthetics; being solidly entertaining in the process.
This is one I was aware of but never watched because my resources for finding and procuring anime was very limited in the 90's, after which I forgot about it. Interesting to hear your take on it. I'll have to check it out. Seeing you cover this also reminded me of another anime I had forgotten about but was extremely curious about which is "Mermaid's Scar" by Rumiko Takahashi. It looks unlike anything she has done before or since. I remember the trailer being incomprehensible and weird. It just shows a bunch of action only scenes with zero dialogue, explanation or context. It just seemed strange and dark and left a real impression on me even though I only saw the trailer. It gave me some serious David Lynch vibes. So maybe this is something you might also be curious about too.
Going through some of your old videos, I noticed your review for Astra Lost in Space. I know you didn't recommend the series, but I think you would like the 1999 series Infinite Ryvius. Without going into much detail, it's a similar idea but it goes more into Lord of the Flies territory as opposed to Astra's feel-good approach.
I am sure you have seen these but I gotta shout out some faves who happen to share similarities with this movie:
Cyber City Oedo 808 - Studio Madhouse - Directed by Yoshitaka Kawajiri
Drarkside Blues - Based on the Manga by Hideyuki Kikuchi
UTTERLY Unrelated to anime is this crazy movie I saw once and ended up bribing a Canadian anime shop into selling me their vhs copy of because I couldn't find it for a long ass time. It is called Six String Samurai. I think you'll dig it.
I’m sure you’ve already seen it but dead leaves is one of my favorite movies of all time for similar reasons!
Awesome video! Pre-2000's anime truly hits different, and it's so sick that you guys highlight all these obscure movies and OVAs that would otherwise go unnoticed
If Bonsai Pop hasn't had a chance to check out the Patlabor franchise (especially the first 2 movies), I'd highly recommend them. A beautiful mix of silliness meets deeply philosophical questions regarding humanity and the structures we inhabit... plus robots!
Keep doing what y'all do, best anime related channel on the platform. :)
A Tree of Palme. It’s a criminally under watched Japanese animated film and the moment I watched it, it was instantly instated as a film classic for me. It’s a reimagining of the famous Pinocchio tale set in absolutely gorgeously realized fantasy world that’s completely alien to anything else in the medium. Accompanied by it is a soundtrack that needs to be recognized for its moment to moment sombers to its moment to moment horrors. It’s animation is nothing less of a masterwork and the story lies in the uncanny valley somewhere between of a fantastical children’s film and a grossly uncomfortable tale of obsession. A must watch.
Also the animation director for Akira was the director for this film and it absolutely shows.
Truly the best quality “I’m not like other girls” anime nostalgia channel on the Tubes
man it is nice to hear anybody talk about this especially you guys since you guys do a great job every time
What great forgotten gem. Glad you enjoyed it. I sure liked it back in the day. I’m gonna have to rewatch to see if it still holds up
I watched this movie today so that I may engage with this video fully and my review is as follows:
This film was batsh1t and I loved every second of it. 🥳
🎵And they call the wind Amnesia…🎵
Never heard of this. Sounds like anime, I think you nailed it. Thanks for the best summary of what amounts to no further understanding possible.
First Patreon i've ever considered joining, i don't even know how to use it. But simply the gems it'll bring to my life...
I'm a huge fan of the concept for this movie. And as crazy as some of it was it added flavour to that world.
It's not a movie but it's a show from the late 90s early 2000s by sunrise its called infinite ryuis. It's basically lord of the flies in space
At this point I don't think any anime you show me will surprise me, like, I know most of the things you cover on the channel are going to be crazy and I LOVE IT
I have this VHS of old japanese stop motion movies for kids. I have no idea how we got a hold on that. It's all in japanese, no subtitles so I can't know for sure what it's all about but it's pretty neat ! And those movies are wild !
There's the one with the children playing hide and seek while their dad is running away from the family !
The The one where the little girl meets living crayons and go with them in the drawing world.
The one where two villages living on opposite cliffs build a bridge between them and when it's done they have a wedding on the bridge (Peek of romance if you ask me)
It's insane ! I have no names, no studios. nothing ! but I wanted poeple to know it exists !
Gantz was truly bizarre to me. It barely explains itself, and i still think about it years later and ask the same questions. Would love your take on it. It is Very graphic.
It actually showed up, in my notifications this time.
I remember watching this in my early teens, it played right after now and then, here and there. Similar vibes, have no idea why someone would make a movie like this or why we watch it but it’s profound. I feel like some art is suppose to leave you with subjective endings and personal feelings. Kinda like how FLCL did before they ruined it with some sequels that it didn’t need and only dropped the value of its worth imo. Not that they are bad but it kinda takes away from the what you’re feeling at the end besides just ending more lost.
If you’re looking for a mildly obscure anime to check out, my friend and I watched Gangsta (2015) last year and had a fun time with it, it had some great action and violence, but the studio shuttered after the first season, and the author’s on an extended hiatus, so there’s a lot more to theorize on and extrapolate from what’s there
Green Legend Ran
Yotoden: Wrath of the Ninja
I love the VHS era of anime. There were so many peculiarities that came to America and went overlooked.
Yotoden! I always think about the creepy little girl singing while she bounces her ball.
Tbh movies of this style are generally not my cuppa but the bonsai boys always make them sound interesting and fun, despite myself. Another hell mouth in the bag CANT WAIT FOR SHONEMBER!
As always, great content, I'll need to check out this OVA. One thing though, "unlocking the potential of the human mind" was not the purpose of MK Ultra, quite the opposite, it was meant to try and gain control of the subjects mind, which resulted in merely destroying the person's psyche, it was also used as a tool for interrogation, and psychological torture, it wasn't an AKIRA type thing.
1. Love the variety of character designs. We have people old, young, short, fat, different races, etc. So rare for anime.
2. The real terror here is the disgusting actions of the aliens who manhandled an entire species out of flippant bullshit. This was mirrored in the MK Ultra stuff in the opening.
Nah this OVA is way smarter that we give it credit for. The aliens are in the wrong, and no one is moral.
I can tell you this: It's only making art inspired by the things we love and put them outside their original mediums, that we can give them new life.
I utilize my admiration for 90's anime as inspiration for my amateur music and a miniature skirmish game I'm working on.
craziest anime movie I've ever seen: Doomed Megalopolis. I saw it as a kid, made no sense to me and I can't even really remember the plot, just that it was so utterly crazy and was about the great earthquake that destroyed Tokyo.
Not sure if it counts as weird/obscure, but as a child I *loved* the Enoki Entertainment version of Thumbelina. Its art is old af and the voice acting for the movie-length dub cut is so questionable, but kid me thought it was the best. Yeah it jams in a morality tale but at the end it goes off the rails with all sorts of eleventh hour characters and randomness.
There is an anime which very much reminds me of this one and I am fairly sure not many people have seen it. I have got it as an exta on a rewritten VHS back in the childhood.
It was called Black Magic M66 and it was about a pair of runaway androids on a rampage. It was gory, it was action packed, it was great.
I'd seen this title before I'd seen this video thumbnail. Figured that may be a recommendation so I watched it. Now, I'm going to watch your vid... I should probably keep doing this
"Then she goes back to space... The End," That is a great line. You guys fuckin rock
I thought about this anime today after decades, and found your channel. Subbed, sir. I dig your tastes, going to have to see what's fallen through the cracks for me. I think respecting something for it's ambition even if it doesn't work completely is how I usually operate and why this movie worked for me back in the day. The original Spriggan also had that kinda vibe, batshit stuff happening while the world building fills in the cracks enough for the story to at least make some semblance of sense.
How about the 1974 Jack and the Beanstalk? I know that he-who-shall-not-be-named covered this movie some years ago, but it was my very first exposure to anime as a lass and I just thought it was from Canada or New York or some other far away land of strangeness, so it has a special place in my heart and it IS a weird and wonderful little kids' movie. I feel like 70s anime tends to get passed up in favor of 80s and 90s stuff when it comes to retrospective views, but this movie was made smack in the middle of the phenomenon's early days, and it's on films like this that the first great giants of that golden age started to cut their teeth. The director later directed Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, and the princess is animated by Tsuneo Maeda of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Metropolis, and Belladonna of Sadness.
Going by the clips I'd guess the film is about, if everyone was separated from the habits and environment they take for granted, what would they choose to do to find value in life? Some turn to rite and religion (the sacrifice), some would say it;s their relationships and lived experiences (the incest couple). The main guy chooses philosophy, knowledge and morality; he becomes a lover of Sophia (philosophy= phil + sophia == love + wisdom). The way these three paths are portrayed, religion is the most communal but also destructive and hysterical, while relationships even if they look strange and perverse can be fulfilling. Philosophy is sublime, it puts you on the same level as the aliens/angels but at the same time it's a more elusive, lonely, and bittersweet path than relationships. I don't think the painting means anything except to make it look like a spiritual act.
Very interesting premise. I could imagine that the most common immediate phenomena would be incest and cannibalism.
Mad I missed this watch party but I do love movies or shows that are wild and crazy for the sake of being wild and crazy. Sometimes you just want to turn your brain off and go along for the ride the creators made to see where it lets you off. Then you get off and it's just like "Wow, I experienced that." and that's all it needs to be.
Loving seeing these movie reviews
thanks for another banger video. watched the movie last night when i saw you uploaded this. was indeed bonkers.
Yeah for sure never heard of this classic but glad y'all are showing it to me
Can't say I'm a fan of this one.
The reason for why humanity lost their memories just rubs me the wrong way.
Works better as book. The Aliens wanted to see if exploring was natural to us. The MC's have a bet that if they can get someone to join them on their journey to the end we get our memories back. And its ambiguous but they did have a sneaky tag along at the end so maybe idk
@@dhampirdp3489 Maybe. I just hate the ideas of smug aliens screwing over humanity... but I'm human so I'm probably biased...
@@juliagoodwin9510 no I get it it's I fuckin stupid idea and it's kinda also implied they might help rebuild or at least bring up the space tech.....if just a huge kikuchi Stan and tbh it was like his 4th book and after the first time he smoked pot (joking) honestly his other stuff even his smut is a lot better also he has was. A summer invader the novella "wind" was co English published with is far worse. Its like he was trying to write a romantic junji ito book. He also just re did dracula but I'm Meiji era Japan also kinda hot trash
I just saw this myself and had no clue it existed despite being a fan of Vampire Hunter D going back to the 80s. I loved this movie. It's like stories out of Heavy Metal Magazine from the 70s and 80s or something like short stories from Clive Barker's Books of Blood.
Best way I can explain what I mean is if you've seen the Netflix Castlevania series there's that one episode with the Infinite Corridor where it briefly opens doors to different types of Earths each further removed from the world Castlevania takes place in than the last until there's one with space ships and a destroyed Moon in the sky and the guy seeing all this can't begin to wrap his head around what he's seeing.
Movies like this are the equivalent of that. We're not from this world. We're only getting a limited glimpse of it with no explanation. We're not meant to understand everything that is going on. We're just here for the rollercoaster like ride and we may not even make it to the end of the ride. It might just end on some crazy drop or loops. You never know with these kinds of stories. I love that. I miss that type of storytelling regardless of the medium.
That was a trip of an anime I didn't expect hahaha thanks for sharing guys!
And Ringing Bell. And... I think it's called 'Wind of Orpheus'; late 70s thing, with big name rock stars attached, and prog rock soundtrack.
Great video, thanks for introducing us to this movie
People losing their memories?? Sounds like the pre-sequel setup to Big O lol
80s and 90s anime were something else. You may not have understood it all, but you always had fun. For your next vid, may I suggest Android Kikaider or Zeiram?
Totally forgot about this anime I must've watched about 10 times years ago! It was hilarious watching this video, because I'd pretty much forgotten most things that happen in it!
This animation style screams my anime childhood.
This movie was such an interesting watch. Definitely too young to have watched this. Such a cool concept
the name is actually pretty dope imo and straight up gives u the circumstances of this dystopian world, its cool.
Do Excel Saga, my memories of that anime are like a fever dream.
Ah yeah. This is a peculiar one.
It's fun, being an Oldtaku...
I remember watching this in the early 2000s on comcast on demand. A lot of random anime on there back then
Hellmouth defeated. Pack it up, boys.
Big fan of Cat Soup. It's real wacky and a quick watch. They fit a lot into 34 minutes.
Crazy and wicked, summer 99' NATO bombing my country and I am watching this anime on local TV network. Me and my cousins approximately same age as me were fascinated with this shit.
Watched this again when I maybe 18 or 19 and I started to realize that 80s and 90s anime asthetic is my thing.
Awesome video and awesome channel. I can tell that we have very similar taste.
@bonsai pop, thanks for another great video. 👏
Some choice cuts:
Crying Freeman - From Kazuo Koike, the creator of Lone Wolf and Cup. Who apparently studied under Takao Saito, creator of Golgo 13. He also wrote Lady Snowblood, which inspired Kill Bill.
And he also wrote the manga that was later adapted as the anime:
Mad Bull 34 - Talk about a Japanese take on American culture.
Apocalypse Zero - Like an NC-17 Kamen Rider in the Apocalypse...or something. Who knows. Just...yeah...
Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma - One of those bloody samurai anime found in the corner of the no no zone at your local mom and pops video store back in the day.
The Guyver Out of Control OVA - Like the Guyver Bio Booster Armor anime but with more graphic violence and hentai tentacles....yeah.
Doomed Megalopolis - M. Bison does supernatural demonic rituals...and spawn a Dick shaped worm that comes out of a woman's mouth
Baoh - By the guy that created JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Another great late 80's OVA.
Spirit Warrior (Peacock King) - Mostly just Episode 1 (Revival of Evil) and 2 ()- Cyborg Nazi Demon Stuff...
X 1999 - The Movie. Including the absolutely ridiculously bad ass Anime Music Video found here on UA-cam.
M.D. Geist - Another 80's wtf anime.
I'm pretty sure you probably know most of these but whatever.
Good luck!
Now I'm starting to see where Tom Cruise's Oblivion plot came from.
I used to download anime in ye olde internet times, and it took hours. You didn't know what you were gonna get, and that's how I wound up watching this one, it was balls to the wall crazy. I think the best thing to come out of those random watchings is "They were eleven". Pretty solid movie with fun and weird elements.
14:32 that girl really poochie herself ohmigosh now this shit is bonkers
General appreciation comment, not video specific.
I appreciate the coverage of animes more mainstream commentators ignore - esp when I can go "HEY I'VE SEEN THAT ONE" - but I also love to see Bonsai Pop's take on seasonal blockbusters like Arcane, Edgerunners, etc.
Really, I just think y'all deserve more traffic (and patreon revenue.)
Watch Windaria, its pretty solid for a 90's movie
A long time ago I had this on VHS. Thought it was pretty good. But left me wanting closure.
may be a weird movie but it looks beautiful
I was a teen in 90s and I remember seeing this VHS in my local Blockbuster but I never picked it up for some reason. I did pick up a movie called Baoh and it was pretty cool, kinda sad they never made a series tho, or if they did I never found out. Anyways, Im glad this video exists bc now Im interested lol I think I never picked it up bc of the cover art and the name, to me it sounded melodramatic and it just reminded me of romantic anime stuff which I wasnt fond of back then.
Not sure I've heard of this but will check It out! Greatly done Video :)
I miss movies like this. The kind that just make you go, wow what the absolute fuck...
M.D. Geist 1&2 , both short both ova both are crazy but a fun ride i enjoyed them as a teen not sure if they hold up.
I remember seeing it years ago. Crazy stuff. Cheers
Ya gotta check out Nekojiru Gekijou and it's movie, Cat Soup. Funny, bizarre and pretty dark at times. Unfortunately Nekojiru, the series creator took her own life back in 1998.
Anime suggestion, Venus Wars! I'd love to see your thoughts on that crazy wonderful mess.
I watched it, in anticipation of this video and I was like "bruh"
Gonna have to check this out. Love me some obscure pre 2000s ova/anime movies!
ow what, this was one of my faves when I was young kid!
Love a bonsai upload
Thanks for showing up! This movie is just a ton of fun, so I tried to translate that into the video. Another Hellmouth in the bag 👍
Try Ice, it reminds me of this exactly is it good? Yeah overall, and it's weird, and it's brilliant, and also it's a 2007 anime that if you had told me was made in the mid 90's I wouldn't know better.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_(anime)
💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Can you do a video on Shadow Skill?? It wasn't ground breaking or anything but I'll never forget it bc the movie was on TV in like 99 or 97 so it's one of the very 1st anime movies I ever saw, like during the Ninja Scroll hyper violence early anime era
A movie/anime I accidentaly found, haven't heard its name anywhere: ichi the killer
