Fun fact: the opening was made the way it was, was because the anime would air late at night so they wanted a theme song that would wake viewers up to keep watching.
If that's true it sure worked with me, being 14 and falling asleep during adult swim, that opening woke me the fuck up.

Between this and Perfect Blue, it's crazy how Kon kinda predicted how the internet and the new information age would have psychological effects on us.
I read a book from either the 80's or so that was fairly spot on with modern culture. The only thing is the cell phones were computers implanted in people's brains.
People knew that when TV was invented... WAY before the internet.
tbh it's not impressive - not that impressive at least. Extreme behaviorism has had this kind of theme pinned down since the 80' (or even earlier, but it depends on the actual theme - anonimacy, administration of two 'images' of yourself, stress, the feeling of wanting to be finished off... and the relationship of all of that with communication).
I'm not discrediting the series, but yeah, in terms of the theme it was quite commonplace in sci-fi and even distopias/utopias started adapting to it. Execution is a whole other story

something may seem right in a moral standing, but have disasterous meaning on a whole different level, I know this is controversial, but take Trans Acceptance for instance, after-all it's morally something that we want to agree with, because a person should have the right to their perception of themselves, and their body, but unfortunately regardless of the right thing with accepting that, we inevitably run the risk of making a percentage of our community sterile, only contributing in using our resources if they aren't scientist, or educated to provide something to society beyond blogs, and Twitter rants, to supplement the one thing anyone sterile can provide which is furthering the population growth..

Paranoia Agent is amazing. Its so ironic that it all started because Tsukiko was being pressured to make a character bigger than Maromi and she ends up succeeding by making up Lil Slugger.
Yeah, I think thats why Satoshi Kon chose a character artist to be the first victim, to hint at the idea that lil slugger is her creation. And only she has the imagination to create something that will become such a big part of pop culture.

Humans are so forgetful that certain platitudes are in need of constant repetition on its ears.
13:11 The detective isn't just imagining Cardboard Cutouts, he's imagining himself inside of a kamishibai, a sort of classic paper puppet show that would be put on by various street performers which reached a height in popularity during the early 50's. This is a really cool detail because it shows that even the era the detective wants to go back to doesn't really exist. People weren't just "good" and "evil" until they weren't like the detective seems to believe, this is simply his own skewed view of the past, presented in a medium that often used good vs evil storytelling.
This something I've noticed with many middle-aged co-workers of mine. They occasionally bring up news coverage of shootings, bombings, and the like, saying "Stuff like this never happened when we were kids." Yes it did. You just weren't paying attention, and information didn't travel quite so quickly and readily.

I've been an insomniac since I was a child and I got to a point where when I'd wake up in the middle of the night I would just turn on Cartoon Network and watch whatever anime was on. I saw two episodes of this as a child, the one with the lady with the split personality and one with three suicidal people. That was one of the oddest experiences of my childhood. Didn't scar me nearly as much the Full Metal Alchemist episode where the dad combines his daughter and dog though ;_;

Episodes 2 - 4 and 11 are so fucking strong with 11 being my favorite. Hearing the detective's wife talk about her love for her husband and their struggles while avoiding death from Lil Slugger was so heartwarming and heartbreaking
The way she helps break Ikari out of his cardboard world makes me cry every time I see it. Hell, I just got misty by thinking about it.

I remember it as well. Especially the allusions to nukes. In fact after reading your post I went to watch it again and noticed something that I didn't understand the significance of as a kid. The fact that the girl was on the building holding her shoes. The guy that made tsundere simulator mentioned it in one of his update videos but people in japan commiting suicide have a tendancy to take their shoes and glasses off and leave them in a neat pile on the roof when they jump. Just that one piece of knowledge that I didn't have as a kid makes the opening so much darker.
Imagining what sort of work Kon would be making today if he was still alive genuinely saddens me. I think with the current popularity of anime in the west he could have broken through and been popular globally in the same way Bong Joon Ho did with Parasite. His death was such an enormous loss to animation and film in general.

This show is a masterpiece. It's one of those rare anime that prove how the right combination of a brilliant creative mind (such as Kon's), the animated medium, and the quintessential modern ennui of Japanese culture can come together to produce something almost like onscreen literature.

I know I'm late to the party here but I wanted to voice my thoughts. Youkai are a type of spirit from Japanese mythology that basically exist to explain a phenomena. Why does your voice echo when you shout up at a mountain? Because a youkai sits on top of that mountain and parrots back whatever it hears. That sort of thing. However, because of their very nature, youkai need belief or fear in order to exist at all. They are spawned by collective belief and made stronger as those emotions grow more intense and widespread.
What's really fascinating about paranoia agent is that, toward the end especially, it starts to look like something actually supernatural is happening. In fact, when viewed through the lens of Japanese myth and legend, that's exactly whats happening. How else would a sickly woman be able to destroy her own home? How else would the city have experienced such a terrifying presence overnight? That lingering question of "but what if?" is haunting.

La Volpe I heard that it was supposed to get a light novel adaptation but the script for that was just added to the show.
This is one series that was hard to watch, just finished it now, but had been keeping trying to watch since 2015, now that i am finally dome with it.... it was... really interesting, for myself however, i hoped this series had more episodes, cuz it was really getting to me by the end, btw, anyone hyped for Opus?

@@Mr.Kibuuka Of course, they die in the abandoned house at the start of the episode. The rest of the episode they are ghosts. It's why they see the guy jump in front of the train moving and worrying about work even though he just died. Trying to show killing yourself doesn't solve anything. Also the photo taken at the end, freaks out the group of people because they're ghosts. Shonen bat runs away from them because they're dead, can't kill yourself if you're already dead.
I first saw the last couple episodes of this by accident late one night when I was 6-7 years old. I didn't know of any premise, I just remember being absolutely terrified and deeply disturbed by the pink dog that tried to stop the black goop from eating everyone alive. It's haunted me for years and I never knew what the name of the show was, until I accidentally stumble on this thumbnail and am sent back to 2006. Thank you for posting this, I can now watch this damn series in its entirety, understand what the hell is going on, and put this demon to rest

One thing not mentioned on the video is, how in the end, everyone "helped" buy Lil' Slugger didn't get really "well".
It's show just very briefly in the end of the series, but many of them simply went back to their problems, like the teacher/call girl ends up having the call girl personality (that was assumed to be gone) appear to her husband, how after everything that happened, people are still dealing with avoidance when it comes to situations they dislike, and there's a new "Maromi" mascot on the media.
Still loved the video on the anime.
It's easily one of my favorite and thanks for the video.

So the 'Shonen Bat' was a symbol of hurting ourselves due to stress at first, and as too many people were getting hurt and it got known in whole Japan, it's power got increased, which is suicidal thoughts. The paranoia they were facing is just to escape their reality.
And that's why when the Wife of the Detective struggled to accept her reality, she was breaking the things near her. But when she accepted it, Shonen bat left but her husband went into a delusional world again just to escape his own reality.

Back when Adult Swim was worth watching. Hell, tv in general was worth watching. They don't make anime this good anymore and it feels like only the Adult Swim and Toonami anime was dubbed decently. Well some of them atleast. That said I'd take a early 2000's anime or a 90's anime over modern any day. Its all fallen into like 3 shows over and over again. I can't even remember character's names as I've seen them with 30 different names already.

One of my favorite shows ever, directed by one of the best directors out there Satoshi Kon. He's dearly missed and I hope we get Dreaming Machine one day
I hope so too, but after Eyepatch's video on _Redline_ and some more thought on it, I have that sneaking suspicion it's not going to happen. The way the anime industry is now, it hasn't been, nor will it ever be able to fill that hole Satoshi Kon left behind when he died.
Kumori Garasu Yeah, we'll have to wait a long time until a worthy successor to Kon emerges. Nobody in the industry had that much insight into Japanese society and its problems. He was one of the few in the entertainment sector who honestly told stories about social issues, a taboo breaker. New talent has first to shed their socially imposed blinders before they can begin to create stories as genuine and perceptive as Kon's.
NorthTwo Kon was a master at showing the human psyche much more than other people in the anime industry. While there are a few others who can show the horrors of humanity in other genres their way of writing is more eccentric by far, much more niche, and rarely put out material (Kunihiko Ikuhara and Chiaki Konaka.) It's a shame that only recently I've started looking into Kon's work for the last two years and it sucks that he passed before his time.
Kumori Garasu The issue is that the people who do put out highly acclaimed work maybe a tad similar to topics Satoshi Kon are irregular in the industry and niche. What Kon's strength was is also making works of art that are much easily accesible to other people, yet still remain true to his own interests. The anime industry has always preferred going with the grain for making cash than taking risks, it's just that now we're going through another phase of some stagnation where bad light novel adaptations and sequels to classic s no one asked for are what's in now. Like the other trends with rom-coms and harems the material fad appeal will pass, but as for skilled newcomers I cannot name too many outside of Naoko Yamada that aren't tied to just animation studios.
Hirasawa and Satoshi Kon used to make some fire shit together
Fantasy may keep us estranged from reality, but they very often are a true comfort from reality. What terrifies me about this series is that the character's motivations and actions are so real; their escape into fantasy is what most people do every day, and it's certainly something that I do. It makes me afraid to rewatch this show.
You see, media like this demands not only to be understood, but to be responded to. Paranoia Agent asks this question of us; "Will you continue depending on your fantasies, or will you face reality head on? Will you go on deluding yourself, or will you make the most of life... whatever that might be?"
I'm afraid of that confrontation. I'm afraid to even type this, to think about it, to even have insight into my life; to look at my reality and strip away all the excuses I use to continue living in the shit way that I currently do... The thought of actually needing to face life and actually live it without the option of running back to where I'm comfortable...
That's true terror, I think. The idea of mass hysteria is scary, yes, but it affects me in an abstract way. True terror, I think, isn't what we imagine or create; it's not what we put down on paper or the big screen, or what's spread by the media; it never will be, so long as it's something we imagine. But our daily lives and the reality we have to face each and every day? The reality that we shouldn't, mustn't avert our eyes from, even when it chills us to our very core? That's what true terror is.

The best part was, the opening makes sense after you watch and rewatch it again till you understand
They didn’t just stop dancing. They actually were exorcised. Essentially they believed they were ill, so they became ill. Then they believed they would be cured, so they were.
I loved this show when it first came out, I really need to watch it again now that I'm older. I feel like I'll get a different perspective on it, Satoshi Kon is sorely missed.

I am so sad that Satoshi Kon passed away. He was ahead of our time, and brought us so important movies. I hope there will be other artist like him in the future.
I loved how, despite the darkness and how the vast majority of the characters are swamped in delusion just to function throughout their lives, Ikari and (especially) his wife offer some much needed hope and brevity for people watching the show.
The wife talking back to Little Slugger even felt more cheerful to me the suicide pact guys (because it's a more genuine and hard-won cheerfulness to me).

I saw Paranoia Agent over 10 years ago and I remember feeling unsettled, but unable to look away. I watched it riveted, not quite sure why. I remembered Paranoia Agent not a month ago and remembered just how unnerved the entire show made me feel, and put it back on my to watch list. This video reminded me why I love Paranoia Agent as much as I do, and why it has been under my skin for so long. It also made me realize why the opening theme is simultaneously uplifting, but haunting.
Man when I first watched Paranoia Agent I didn't really get it at all. I mean this was a couple years ago, and I caught on to most of the themes but didn't have the deep appreciation that a show like that deserves.
However I still really enjoyed it. It's weird how we're able to become so entranced by some stories without really knowing why it is until later on. I identify with the daydreaming/escapism aspect a lot, but I didn't really realize just how much the show was about that until watching this video. I think that's not only a testament to the greatness of the series and how it can get under your skin like that, but also SuperEyepatchWolf's fantastic analysis.

Episode 3 is just heartbreaking. Harumis struggle is such an well directed portrait of a mental illness that it was for me hard to watch. Kon was an absolute outstanding director.
I'm also irish, and "12th century British shenanigans" was hilarious. As always, great video!

Satoshi Kon, A legend amongst legends. You will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
Shows like Paranoia agent and Serial experiments Lain and so on from the late 90s and early 2000s is one of the the reasons because I watch anime. Because they are really something different, something special.
I can't say that modern anime is bad, it's not, it's great, but its seams to me that its lacking of so experimental and unusual works like Paranoia agent, and that make me sad. But maybe I hear only about mainstream anime, and there is still something like this exists? If it is, I hope someone can write the names of that titles under this comment.

The only recent anime that got me on my knees was shinsekai yori, it got me this unsettling feeling like Paranoia Agent. Parasyte, Steins Gate and Devilman Crybaby are also pretty good, but the focus of discussion is different.

I'm really late, but Paranoia Agent has been a force throughout my life tbh.
I actually remember first watching this series. I was born in '95, so I was very young, the first time watching it. I probably watched it on Toonami tbh and, while watching this show, I happened to see a commercial for Gorillaz (lol) and, the crazy looking music video combined with the crazy show, Paranoia Agent, made me remember these names for years to come. Paranoia Agent probably isn't something you'd want to show to your tiny children, but the absolutly FASCINATING animation mixed with the story, which I couldn't quite follow at that age, is likely what made my interest in it stay for decade to follow.
When I was about 18, I rewatched the series. It was easy to find because I still remembered its name. It was then I noticed the much heavier messages of the show; mostly I noticed the disturbing commentary it made on media. Rewatching this show was honestly one of the first times I seriously thought about the difference between intent and consequence. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone tbh.
But watching this review half a decade later, I realize there may have been even more from this anime that I missed as an adolescent... I almost what to recommend it to people I know, cos I'm already aware that this show is SPECTACULAR... but I don't really know anyone who'd be interested in watching this show, or any show at all tbh. But I feel now like I have to watch it once more, hoping I'll finally find meaning in EVERYTHING the show brings.
Basically, Paranoia Agent has been a life-long endeavor for me...........
When you watched it the first time it was on Adult Swim. AS was just beginning to stop being mostly anime back then and there was a short time when Toonami had come back on the weekend and would follow into Adult Swim, which played anime until around 12 or 1 AM in the night on weekends before moving into whatever random terrible show they made with $5 and some cheap software.
In case your wondering, I missed a lot of the content too. An episode a week was not enough to remember much and I was still getting to understand Japanese culture so I was often distracted.
You can never watch it too many times... like Boogiepop Phantom or FLCL.
Jesus I know this is a late comment but I had the exact same experience. I was born in 95 as well and my sister warned me about this show saying I was too young for it. I watched it anyway and was scarred for a while lol. But i couldn't resist watching because the animation alone was just so different.

My advise on watching the show. Don't binge watch it. Watch it as it was meant, once every week, since it'll take you that long for intent behind each episode sink into you. In good old newsgroup, there was thread dedicated to the episodes of the show and it took about three days of discussion there to realize the threesome in episode #8 actually succeeded in what they set out to do. (hint: pay attention to their shadow) Couldn't have spotted watching it back to back.

I just finished it,I started watching it yesterday,I don't think I got the full picture but I gave it a try at least,unlike an ungreatful friend I have that didn't even bother watching the first episode I sent to him,yet he called it rediculous and for kids and it sucks and shit like that,idk y i try putting him on new shows obviously he doesn't appreciate/get it,always judging from first look,I can't stand fast not full thought out judgments.
I binged it the last two days and I think I fully got the "experience". Episode 8 right at the end of the episode it hit me because how freaked out the girl with the camera were.

Congrats on this video. I think you hit the nail. However i think there is only just one aspect missing from the ideas proposed in Paranoia Agent: the subsequent responsability that arouses from accepting there is no scape to the harships of existance. As you see, in the chapter about the wife of the inspector, the ill woman speaks with lil' slugger about how she had accepted the inetability of what may come. And that is the underlying message i think Kon tried to depict: eyou can live ina fantasy world scaping the real one, but the real one will stay there no matter what. Sooner or later you will have to face your actions, your problems and your responsabilities. It kind of reminded me of the Radical Freedom from Camus and what Viktor Frankl talked about in his "Man in the search of meaning". You have to face reality, not with a depressed undertone of scapism and anxiety but with the calm and stoic mind of someone who has accepted the underlying meaningless that could face but that gives him the freedom to choose a purpose for him or herself. A ton of the stories revolve around not taking action in the face of a problems.

Strongly agree with this. The episode starring Misae talking with Shounen Bat and how she managed to drive him away by accepting her reality was such a powerful and memorable moment, it gives me strength.
That mindfuck that is named Paprika is a masterpiece of the psychological genre. Never seen the horror if the line between reality and dreams suddenly blurred and affect people for the worst.
SPOILER WARNING
Not only are Shonen Bat and Maromi the same in the they're Tsukiko's creations that took over the world, they also both tie back into the escapism theme by being characters she made to get away from reality. She made Maromi because she felt bad about her dog, and then throughout the series Maromi is there talking to her, making her feel better, always repeating that it's not her fault (her fantasy world). And then Shonen Bat was made to escape from the guilt of accidentally getting her dog killed and to not have to face that reality with her father. And in the last episode where we see Tsukiko hug Maromi and say she's sorry, aka finally accept this traumatic experience, Shonen Bat says goodbye and go away. And throughout the series, various other characters also take on this mass hysteria to feed into their own escapism, attacking themselves in order to be "free" and then blaming it on Shonen Bat. Such an amazing work of art.
Years back, I decided to try for an audition at a school for animation in the Netherlands, they asked me; who is your favorite animator? I said 'Satoshi Kon'...and got these angry faces. I got rejected lol. But honestly I probably didn't draw enough. I hope one of these blockshaped head idiots still gets to see one of your videos and decides on watching it. Maybe for many of the film industry Kon tends to be an inspiration, but he also can be an inspiration for animation, showing animation doesn't all have to be squash and stretch, cartoony character clearly in a stiff location without creative ways of animating space, time and shape and whatnot, just tripping over a line that makes out a banana. There's so many ways to be a great animator, in various styles and through storytelling.
Well, when an animator has creative control over a big project, they don't draw much don't they? They mostly direct other animators.

Absolutely loved this show. This show was a perfect example of a show can be subtly intense and maddening without being heavy handed. I renember a feeling of vulberability watching this show that few things (including Junji Ito) make me feel. I wonder what EPW think of Ren and Stimpy.

This isn't an review it's a recommendation video. "i got problems with xyz" you really can't take criticism of your favourite show.
As somebody with a disorder that literally means I have difficulty identifying what's real and what's not, and who craves that disconnect all the more when life gets so tough... This show could either be helpful or very harmful for me, since I suspect I'll relate even more than most.
Edit: I looked up how people with depersonalization disorders do with it, and somebody described it as "mainly a wake up call for any one who day dreams as means to escape their emotion pain." It doesn't sound like it's for me... Depersonalization/derealization are automatic, I can't help it and they scare me. Maladaptive daydreaming kept me alive for years, and then I got better for a bit and can't do it anymore - I'm crumbling without it. What I need is therapy, not "a wakeup call."
Satoshi Kon captured what the essence of an Urban Legend has with the character that is equally disturbing in fantastical and realistic sense.
I could see Satoshi Kon make a movie about a meme that literally ends the world...hasn't that been done already?
There is actually a comic book series about that called _Memetic_ by James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan. It revolves around the spread a viral hypnotic internet meme called the Good Times Sloth that turns people who become obsessed with it into feral zombies.
Having been dead for 8 years probably makes it hard to put out any new work.

its perfect emotional dissonance being experienced with a satire of the real world that we can all understand.
Serial experiments Lain, and also perhaps key the metal Idol are of a similar sort of predictive capacity.
Key is particularly interesting because instead of using the internet it's using the spread of VHS tapes as a medium of information exchange. Whereas lain is about the early internet.
