Outlaw Star is the story of Gene Starwind and his ragtag group of misfits aboard the Outlaw Star finding the Galactic Leyline. However there's so much more to this anime than just Gene's story. Outlaw star is about self discovery, Taoism, and finding the path in life that is right for you. Outlaw Star has a little something for everyone. As a space western it blends magic with technology in a way rarely seen. While it's often overshadowed by the other space westerns of 1998, namely Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, Outlaw Star's influence on Anime and those who watched it cannot be overstated. So let's get into it!

The entire last act of the first season of FF is extremely similar to the last episodes of Outlaw Star.

Back when i was a kid i remember watching outlaw star and wanting to abandon school and do my own thing. Today when i watch it i want to abandon the rule book of life and just do my own thing.
That's something Cowboy Bebop and Trigun never made me feel.
I have been feeling this way for ever. I grew up with ADHD and literally have been prescribed ADHD pills since first grade. They have been trying to control me for my whole life with ADHD medications. I wish was li ike most kids though. I have a hard time with concentrating and jobs. But good thing my parents make a lot of money so when I am out of a job I can do can still but what I want and satisfy myself with products when I have no job
I have been doing my own thing since the beginning, seriously. It feels good to be confident enough to do what I want and not worry what other people think

I know this is selfish and immature...but I love the quarantine for making people go back and rediscover Outlaw Star! I am old enough to have lost my shit when I found the entire DVD box set on sale for 20% it's normal price in a soon-to-be-closed Sam Goody back when malls were a thing but about to not be. I loaned it to my youngest brother (who is 13 years younger than me) when he was going to spend a week with our mom and was worried he wouldn't have anything to do. I almost cried when he gave it back and told me how much he loved it! This is my favorite of a sort of classic/almost classic anime from that era ie Inuyasha, Ruroni Kenshin, Samurai Champloo etc. and I love that this and all those are finally geting their love and due from this and other channels/communities...Thank you!

I like the world of Outlaw Star more (GRAPPLER SHIPS) but Cowboy Bebop is a different experience all together with less over-the-top action and more of a darker story that feels somewhat grounded. Trigun is just a depressing world that feels over the top. It's not a bad show, it's just like Fist of the North Star but with guns.
i agree. cowboy bebop seems to be a more solid all around anime, but outlaw star is still my favorite

Outlaw Star. Man I miss the Toonami days
Toonami still exists of course, but it's not the quality of the weekday Toonami of '97 to '03 that didn't treat kids like infants. For years, it's been almost entirely shonen anime that caters to Generation Z's tastes.
Not me, anime is now more assessable and actually accepted as pop-culture. The Toonami days was the only access american/USA kids had to anime aside from pokemon and sailor moon. These days are far better for anime fans

the sci-fi fantasy mix of magic and technology, is one of the biggest reasons I really love, not only, this show but Phantasy Star.
As a proud owner of an Outlaw Star boxset since the mid 2000's, I loved this, well done. Trigun may be my favorite, and Bebop may be the coolest, but Outlaw Star... its still special to me, like an old friend there to say hi every once and a while.
And the OP still gets me hyped every time I hear it.
My favorite thing about Bonsai Pop videos is how they get me to think deeply about these things I've never considered. You guys can take a show I've never seen and make me want to watch it, cause Mike generally pitches it well, but also cause I wanna engage with the Themes of a show. Keep up the great work guys! Loved outlaw star when I was a kid, rewatched all my favorite childhood animes recently and this one was the only one that didn't resonate with me as much anymore.. Still good but not on the level like Cowboy Bebop
@@donovanchilton5817 As a show, yeah bebop is more solid. but i think its important to realize that Outlaw and beboop arent the same kind of show. They are superficially similar, but they both want to totally different things. What I dont get is why we cant just like them all. Whats with the Outlaw Star V.s. Trigun V.s. Bebop argument anyway? I'm way more amazed that japan got all three of these series at the same time. Lucky bastards.
Loved it as a kid. Tried to rewatch it as an adult and still enjoyed it but I wasn’t enthralled with it like I was as a kid. Still choose to fondly remember it through..
To this day, so many years later, this is still probably my favorite anime of all time. An absolutely underrated masterpiece. I'm so happy to see it really get the looks it deserves lately. Even my friends have come to me and asked, "Oh hey, have you seen Outlaw Star before?" ....Let me tell you, dear friend... let me tell you.

Flat out, this was my fav show on Toonami years and years ago. I personally loved this cast over Cowboy Bebop , but when the series ended I just kinda craved more that never came. Same time its good years later to see others who enjoyed it as much if not more then me. If anything thank you very much for the video and hell teaching me a few things I didn't know that were so heavily placed in the show. Stay Safe and be well

I craved it so bad I actually watched angel links - which is terrible ha. I know they drew up sketches for a sequel OVA but it never went through and at this point I think we’re shit outta luck. My only hope is someone rich picks it up as a passion project - maybe does a prequel like hot ice Hilda before the show and how she stole the XGP.
There was going to be an OVA called Outlaw Star: Sword of Wind but it never made it past a vague storyline and a few pieces of concept art that you can find if you dig around online.

I dig what this series was capable of, like Bebop, it was a rebel, but also had a story to tell. Unique art style within each episode. Character arcs. Heroes, villains, and space itself.
I always felt Bebop & Outlaw Star are literally brothers. They never met, but know one another. There is a hidden rivalry, yet both take amazing risks within their journey.
There is something about late 90's anime, that made it stand out over most titles back then. Even now, 20 years later.. there is nothing else like Bebop or Outlaw Star to compare to. (Also add in FLCL)

Absolutely agree! Outlaw Star and Bebop are brothers. One is the younger brother who still believes in fantasy and magic, and the other is the older brother who is the realist trying to get through life, but both have that same feel of a lived-in and difficult world.
And then there is Trigun which is kinda like the cousin that you have that looks like it is all fun and games... and then you get to know him and his brother is constantly trying to murder him, and he is full of regrets because he is the strongest being on the planet but still not strong enough to take care of his own friends...

This cartoon literally has the coolest character design out of any show (or videogame) i have ever seen. The use of Tao imagery is an added bonus for me. This shit was dope
This was a great video. I just finished my rewatch today.
But I think I can add some specifics to it's relationship with T/Daoism. I'll just bullet point them in brief because it could be an essay otherwise (maybe I'll make my own video):
-Outlaw Star, like a lot of Japanese anime and fiction, has a very Japanese-influenced view on Daoism. While what you covered is the exoteric Daoist philosophy, a whole lot of Japanese fiction focuses on esoteric Daoism, and it's related syncretic religions and sects, most often due to Japanese Daoists serving as stock "occultist" characters in their fiction. This is due to Japanese Daoist practitioners often taking the role of astrologers and, essentially, wizards, the same way magicians of Europe such as John Dee serve as the stock "occultist" characters there. The yin-yang symbol along as an occult, esoteric connotation to it in Japan that hasn't really taken root in the west. Whereas Zen is a more "stripped back" form of Buddhism (next to Mahayana or Yajrayana) that keeps the practice and theurgy relatively simple, and Shintoism is much more folk based and embedded in a local landscape, the forms Daoism took in Japan were highly technical, specific and complex, where casting an astrological chart for a local lord required a high level of proto-scientific knowledge on astronomy, and necromatic techniques for summoning the dead involved very specific inks and designs, passed down in secret, to be ritualistically drawn as talismans. For reference; Shaman King!
So;
-probably the most well known (in Japan) form of esoteric Daoism, as syncretised with Shingon Buddhism and local Shinto belief, was Onmyodo (which translates to "Way of yin-yang"). Up until the mid-1800s, it was fairly common to find Onmyodo practitioners working for local lords as, essentially, astrologers. Specifically, they were often employed to create calendars at the requests of their lord, in order to set forth what auspicious days were of note in the coming years. It remains a very complex and wholly unique form of astrology, and while the practice was banned as a superstition in the mid-1800s, there are still a scant few people in Japan who study it today and employ it as a service. Very suitable for a space-faring group of wizards looking for Lei Lines.
-there is also a heretical sect of Shingon Buddhism somewhat famous in Japan called the Tachiwaka Ryu, themselves known for mysterious tantric sex rituals that earned them persecution.
-Gene very specifically calls the first three Taoist sorcerer's system of magic "Senjutsu". "Senjutsu" is a different, particular strand of magic specific to the mountain ascetics of the Tendai sect; a syncretic form of Mahayana Buddhism, with some scant elements of esoteric Daoism brought back from China's own holy mountains. So, if you can imagine the image of a stern, Japanese mountain hermit with a deep spiritual practice and magical ability to boot, you've probably gotten that from anime that references the real life sages. It's also the origin of the very anime ninja magic "kujikira"/Naruto hand signs.
-Also, note that the hot spring planet is called "Tenrei" which may be a play on "Tendai" and that it's sages are mountain ascetics of their own (though they seem much more western styled with their seal of Solomon and obsession with "mana" instead of "ki/chi"). The mountain itself is called Mount Nantai; another holy mountain in Japan.
-Maoshan Daoism is another line of esoteric Daoism to look into when it comes to anime's depiction of eastern sorcery, and is probably the lineage most focused on making talismans. So if you ever see an anime wizard throwing a slip of paper with mysterious characters on it in order to cast a spell, it probably has some relation to Maoshan (though there is no lack of similar talismans across Shingon Buddhist traditions, and even some Shinto traditions with their ofuda talismans).
What I find really fascinating about Outlaw Star's depiction of magic is that it's seemingly a blend of not just mainland Chinese esoteric Daoism (which, btw, was not popular with the communist party, and was repressed during the cultural revolution, with many esoteric sects remaining secretive or dormant), but Japanese lines of it, somehow reinterpreted as purely Chinese (though some of the Kei pirate assassins are more Japanese than Chinese in style). Daoism had an indelible influence on Japanese esotericism and cosmology, but often when an anime calls for something "occult", esoteric Daoism is the reference. There are loads of further specific occult references throughout the series, but I'll leave it here for now!

I really appreciate this in depth look at what is probably my favorite anime series. I never could put my finger on why it stood out but the underlying attitude of the show just sucked me in. I never knew the history of the symbolism but this is a solid take on it all.

I will always feel bad for US viewers; the UK run didn't edit anything out, and the Hot Spring episode was never skipped.
Thats because it aired around 6 or 5pm so duh the network had to be edit it. Hell, the original Japanese run aired around midnight because the show was for older audience. But back in 2018 adultswim/toonami reaired it unedited

Toonami tried to make this a kids show so yeah there were a lot of edits.
Esca Flowne got it worse though, Fox Kids not only tried to make that show kid friendly, but strictly a "boys" show, with anything too "Girly" being downplayed or cut.

For some odd reason, Outlaw Star was the most memorable anime for me back in the Toonami days. Don't get me wrong, I loved almost everything that aired on Toonami/Adult Swim. Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragonball, Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Bleach, Ronin Warriors, the list goes on. Maybe I watched Outlaw Star during a moment in life where I really enjoyed childhood and began the stages of growing up a bit, I honestly don't know. I do know for sure that this Anime is definitely a hidden gem from the mainstream audiences and deserves more credit. I was really hopping of a sequel or side story of new characters in the Outlaw Star Universe. You're doing amazing work Bonsai Pop, keep up the great content.
Fun trivia: The English voice actor of Gene Starwind is Bob Buchholz. Bob is the English voice director for many hit Anime such as Beastars, Yo-kai Watch, Digimon and The Seven Deadly Sins to name a few. As well as the voice director for almost every Square Enix game, the big ones being Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy VII Remake. What's even more awesome is that his normal voice is basically Gene Starwind's voice.
Angel Links takes place in the same universe but it's nowhere near as good.
@@End3r000 I remember reading about that a long time ago but was hesitant to watch it because it never live up to be anywhere near Outlaw Star.
I was hoping they would return to the same Universe with an original set of characters that are written almost as good (at the very least) as the Outlaw Star cast.
Similar to Gundam 0079. I loved the original Mobile Suit Gundam cast but I also loved The White Dingos, 0080 and the 08th MS Team. All within the same universe and timeline but in different parts of the world and galaxy.
Outlaw Star is my all time favorite anime. I still clearly remember the ending.
In most cases I am glad I was not able to watch some anime on Toonami and was only able to watch them through buying them. My favorite Outlaw Star episode is the the hot spring episode because there was so much information and great concepts explained. I did always feel that there was something we were missing and that there was more to this episode, and now thanks to this video (thanks for that)I know that it is due to a connected story I have never heard of until now. I wish I could find more info on this story too.
These 3 shows mentioned are part of my classic top ten. All 3 shows make me look at myself, and later in life made me look at the world with me in it. They make me question the human condition and society as a whole. Sure, these are drastic tellings of an imperfect society, but there are a lot of themes that hit close to home for us here and now. Around 30 years after originally watching these anime watching each multiple times, I find I still learn from the great experiences these shows offer.

Outlaw Star, Inuyasha and Dragon Ball were the first introduction into Anime and Outlaw Star was the first DVD series I purchased and is one of my priced collections.
This was one of my defining animes as a kid. It's what got me to love all space based tv, games, anime etc. I watched it so much to This day I still remember the words to Melfinas song. Also Aisha was my first anime Waifu. Seriously underrated series.
I've always made it a habit to re-watch Outlaw Star ever since I managed to snag a Bandai DVD set a bunch of years back. I have no regrets buying the limited Blu-ray.
Being older you see more into old shows but the kind of metaphors and messages mentioned here go unnoticed to the untrained eye so basically what I want to say is 'awesome video!'.
It'll always be a fun adventure story that I can always fall back on and have a good time with.

Thanks for bringing up how identity is tied to how others see you. That’s why presentation is so important. Too often in our modern societies we tend to think that identity is fluid and you can be whatever as long as you believe it hard enough. That’s simply not the case. You find identity through living your life, your observations and actions, and the observations of those around you.
This might be the best retrospective on Outlaw Star ever done!

While I probably caught less than 4 episodes of Outlaw when little, the imagery and retro illustrative style were very impactful.
Years later I figured that the "old anime with the red haired guy in the red ship" probably wasn't really ever that good and had just caught the attention of my smol mind. This being said, it's an absolute joy to learn otherwise, seeing retrospectives from your and Wolf's channels pop up in my feed. And the visuals still hit me.
I'm also grateful that you incorporate a brief history lesson concerning key creators involved with the series.
I'm adding Ito, Minowa, and Kawamori to my cheat-sheet/study guide of Japanese artists/creators!
(I also had no idea Sunrise was involved with Transformers and Batman - two franchises that we tend to hold up as being distinctly and exclusively western... wow.)

While I had figured its usage in Outlaw amounted to little more than a fun fanciful take on the practice or a magic explanation, I'm glad there's more meat and intent present than I had thought.
I've also never heard the description you've given, instead only being familiar with the Tao's equivalence with "balance"/"the middle way".
I love the idea that the Tao can look different for every individual, as well as the circular inclusion of the Te. Its beautiful.
It also feels so much less dogmatic than the idea there there is one way/path for everyone.
It makes sense that being "self-actualized" would entail finding and consuming what elicits passion, and then using that as fuel to breath out a sacred expression of one's own ✨

Everyone only ever gives praise to Cowboy Bebop, but now...Outlaw Star is getting it's due? Why? I mean, I'm getting chills seeing all this, but at the same time, I don't understand why everyone is talking about it all of a sudden. Great video by the way.

Thanks for covering this anime. I've always felt it was an underrated gem of the 90's. I remember watching this when I was 8 years old; I always anticipated for school to be over so I could get home and watch Toonami with my brothers. Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo were my gateway animes. So much nostalgia.
I didn't expect to watch the full 40mins but it was well done and entertaining. Good use of Scars of Time too. Outlaw Star is one of the few series I bothered to buy on DVD back when I was still in HS and I've never regretted that purchase.
Serenity/Firefly took so much from Outlaw Star. The Name of the planet where the mystery in Serenity is Miranda, which is the same as the password to the coordinates to find the Galactic Leyline. Finding Serenity is part of a song that Melfina sings towards the end of the series. Etc..

Watching this and hearing about the legends who worked on it makes me now realize why I love this show so much. Literally grew up watching all of their other works and then found this myself one day on TV just got myself the Perfect Collection DVD set for $15 and plan on watching it on my CRT.
Damn, as a fan of the series I have to say that this was the deepest, respectful, beautiful explanation and breakdown of characters and story that anyone can find. Well done brother, bravo

Wow, this hit hard, thank you! This was my second ever anime series to watch, first to RoboTech. I am in my 30's, and I feel that I missed so much watching Outlaw Star because I was young. I feel that I need to watch it again in its entirety to fully enjoy it. I loved it then, I sure will love it more again.
This was my favorite anime from the first time i saw it on toonami and I ended up buying a dvd box set to get the full show because they clearly cut a lot when it aired on tv. I was shocked at how much I had missed out on during its tv run. Great show though. Liked your description of it. felt the passion you had come through.
I never understood people who liked Bebop or Trigun, but complained Outlaw Star meandered. All three are character driven shows with a more episodic structure, and it works.
Outlaw Star an awesome and radical underrated show that will always be one of my favorites!

I'm glad this show is getting so much love lately. This was one of the first anime i /really/ got into after my fast paced obsession with the early wave of western attention to anime started coming around. I had just recently started accepting that it was too obscure for even my weeb trash friends, but i think it's popping up on a lot of people's radars these days and that is just nice

This video literally kind of blew my mind & made me realize why I adore this wacky Space Western. It’s always been a favorite (maybe my 2nd 90s anime after Sailor Moon… okay 3rd after Gundam Wing, & Tenchi behind), but I don’t think I’ve ever thought of the deeper Taoist elements. This video made me learn so much. It’s the same reason I love the Persona game series. It’s about becoming your best self. Which… who will really do that? But we always hopefully are.

Loved this show when it was on toonami. Showing my age a bit but always loved this show. Great explanation on the dao. Honestly didn’t understand the dao until I started reading Chinese cultivation novels. Aisha is my favorite character.

I agree with you. The way that this particular anime showcases the relationships between it's characters and draws on that theme at the end to show Gene taking the more wholesome path declining the true treasure of the Leyline and freeing Melfina from her status as a 'tool' is just fantastic. Some of my favourite episodes were the meandering ones, the episode with Jim and Hanmyo, the one where Gene is called out by Shimi and has to really think about how he might really die. These things stayed with me and gave me real insights into the characters! It made me care about them when we got to the Leyline. I was even worried about Harry by that point! Like...

when I watched Outlaw Star back in the day on Toonami, episode 24 always kinda bothered me cause of the caster shell plot point, I could never understand why those new caster shells were so important cause they just seemed to come out of nowhere, but then I saw youtube videos talking about that episode being cut and I watched and finally understand what those caster shells were about and I see why the episode was completely cut out, looking back on a few anime shows that I first saw on Toonami like Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo, they were a lot dirtier than I remember cause obviously they were so heavily censored for our western minds, but great show, watched it a lot haven't fully watched it in years but I still have a pretty good memory of many of the episodes except for the hot spring episode lol
Where I grew up we didn't have cable, and we had access to a lot of anime DVDs and VHSs, so I watched the uncensored version of this show, and was blown away that so many people had seen it, or had even heard of it. In my mind I loved it, but thought it was far too dirty
acey to have gained any kind of broader audience in the US. Now hearing that it was on toonami, and much more toned down, that mystery is a bit more solved lol.

Outlaw Star is one of the first anime I ever saw and is easily in my top ten favorite of all time anime.
Back when I was a kid and this show came on toonami I thought that all the aesthetics of the show where Japanese not Chinese so thank you Bonsai Pop for teaching me some more about the world and its many cultures.
This has become my favorite Bonsai Pop video. I can't get enough of learning about this show and it's very deep themes of finding ones self.

I’m happy to see that I wasn’t the only fan to this amazing show. As of now it’s hard to recommend it to people as anime is now a lot more refined and crisp but when I get someone that is intrigued enough to watch the show. It just blows there mind. Also thank you for giving a history lesson on the meanings in the show, that really cleared up a lot of things.
