- I used 3 Asus wireless routers [RT-AC68U] to set up a whole-home wireless network, once by using the #Asus #AiMesh system and once by using the Asus #Repeater and Access Point operation modes and then did some interesting tests which you can see them in this video!
The results are based on my testing environment here and it doesn't mean everybody should get the same results. Also the wireless routers are Dual-band routers, so this video is not that much applicable to Tri-band routers because they can dedicate a 5 GHz radio to the inter-router communication which can result in a different whole-home wireless experience. Asus should pay you some money. The only reason that I bought 2 Asus routers is because there are no comprehensive videos on youtube or anywhere that explain how to do this stuff. There are other videos but they don't tell you the information in way that a novice can digest and implement.

Your video contains EXACTLY what I have been looking for. With Home Automation (Home Assistant/ESPHomeyaml 87.1) I have been struggling with MULTIPLE WiFi systems, attempting to cover a large area (inside and outside the home). Poor results. I looked at WiFi repeaters and 'Google Whole Home' system (at $250, TOO expensive) and control issues. With Sonoff WiFi automation devices accounting for about 95% of my controls, their weak WiFi signal limits what I can do. Using AiMesh answers all my issues and allows expansion WHEN and IF I need it. NO one and I mean NO ONE explained the system as well as you have with REAL TEST RESULTS!!!!! Purchased an Asus AC-1900 router today (replacing an old/failing AMPED 2600). I have a Cat 6 line running about 70 feet to the 2nd location (if the single system doesn't work well enough) . Thank you....Keep up the good work

The roaming test between wired mesh and AP mode is very helpful! If I get it right, wired mesh is likely to be the home wireless solution with least professional knowledge and tuning (only roaming assistant settings). Thank you and look forward to more interesting tests and reviews.
Thank you!! This answered a lot of questions I had that I couldn't find the answers to elsewhere. So AIMesh isn't faster than Repeater mode, just easier to set up and with an auto roaming feature that doesn't require you to turn down antenna power and adjust kick-off thresholds. Roaming features aren't important to me so it's great to know I can get an AC66U or any lower-end Asus router, use it in repeater mode and get the same speed as AIMesh. Ultimately, it seems that whatever system you're using, you're going to lose roughly 50% bandwidth with each Wi-Fi-to-Wi-Fi hop.

AiMesh now includes a network diagram showing how the nodes are connected together. It was included as part of AiMesh 2.0 in the firmware update released around the end of 2020.
It also includes a few other features to tweak the mesh setup.
I think the AP/Repeater approach is better for me. I live in a 2-story house, in a rural area. I manage 5 to 8 devices most of the time, including a pair of wireless cameras. But in the first floor all the way down to the patio/backyard the signal is losing. If I implement a mesh wifi system, with all networks emitting in the same channels, is highly probably to get a network congestion easily. I've confirmed it with a simple WDS connection between the main router and a spare one I have. The whole network is down the on first one or two mins after I turned the other router on, but right after that the network started to live..... Thanks for this series of videos. I bought a few high-end Asus routers, intending to do AImesh. Now, I suppose I'll just do Router + 2 wired APs.
I'm planning on doing the same. I realize, as always, the weakest link in the chain will be the biggest issue. I can not run Ethernet easily so I have DECA adapters where the APs will go. GoCoax has some MOCA 2.5 adapters ($60 per) that I may have to buy to achieve close to ideal speeds, but I'm hoping this AImesh can work. The SSID transfer seem fairly painless, but I'm willing to identify and customize the channels if that is necessary. I plan on transferring everything to a new house with a much wider footprint by 2021, and at that point cat 6/7 cable should be fairly simple to run.

Very detailed video, I like more control over my network as well. I'm going to invest in a tmobile ac68u router since those are cheaper then the normal asus ac68u. I know asus just did a firmware update to block tmobile routers from using aimesh but now im not worried about not having aimesh at all. Thank you!!

Repeater/AP - better flexibility and more control for even higher speeds (cheap); devices can be mix/match.
Imesh -better resiliency and simple to setup (expensive); devices needs to be same type.

Behfor, your videos on WiFi & Networking are by far superior, to most videos on the subject. They're in plain language, and easy to understand. Have you had any experience with the Airi Smart Mesh Product? I've been given a chance to try-out a system in my home, and I'm debating WiFi back-haul vs. Ethernet back-haul. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Nice video, Behfor. I learned a lot, but I still don't know what is best for me. Maybe you can provide some advice? I have a 3-story, 2400 square foot townhouse. My cable and modem/router is located in a central-ish point (2nd-floor, kitchen pantry) - it's where the Ethernet wires come together (I've wired Cat6 to 7 spots throughout the house). I'm currently using the modem/router combo device that I'm leasing from my ISP (cable company). I have 2 large TVs and the desktop computer hardwired to the modem/router. I plan to buy my own equipment, but I don't know what to get. I also plan to upgrade my internet speeds from my current 60 Mbps to 500 Mbps (or Gigabit). From the research I've done so far, "I think" I want a good modem, a switch, and a mesh router. I would put the nodes between the TVs and desktop (to keep them hardwired), and nodes would act as wifi routers for the rooms there are in. Does that sound like a good solution? I don't if using APs are better. Thanks!!
Great stuff. I have a ac86u now and moving into a new home. About 4200sqft with the basement. I'm going to try to get the router the most centrally located as possible and see if it reaches the entire house. If not, I will for sure get another ac86u and use aimesh. Thanks for the info!

@Max Nguyen my situation is similar to yours when it comes to the house part. The modem is in the basement in my brother’s room. I’d have to put the main router there connecting to the modem and use the remainder 3 as nodes. I’ll be receiving 4 of those RT AC68U routers soon. How did yours come out? Do the nodes have to be connected via Ethernet also or just plug into the power outlet and that’s it? I’m still a bit confused so I’m just trying to grasp as much info as possible.
Great videos - thank you for your in depth explanations. I have ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8) 2 Nodes and I will add my old RT-N66U in AP mode, since it doesn't have AI Mesh capability. Can I label it with the same SSID as my XT8? Also how do you test to find the least congested channels to select? Also how do you survey the routers for their broadcast range? Thank you.

i agree node info is very limited. we would need also a command on the interface for rebooting remotely.

I noticed that AI Mesh on the asus RT-AC68U handoff is nt as smooth using the original ASUS or the Merlin firmware, is there a better firware or should I try it as repeater.
Hey Behfor! I've been slowly upgrading my network using only Asus routers and extenders starting with the RT-AC68P (Best Buy exclusive of the 68U) about 6 years ago. I know this video is almost 2 years old and you may know this now, but I just wanted to let you know that you can see the actual Network Map of the AiMesh Topology thru the Asus Mobile App. What I haven't been able to do is force one of the nodes to wirelessly connect to my preferred node. It seems to do it automatically in my case, and is connecting to my main router, which isn't actually the closest.

a Ton of information in a simple way. I got 2 ASUS AC and planning to replace my Tenda MW6 Mesh system as it at times get my media devices connected to far away node instead of the closer one slowing streaming and network speeds. Its interface does not allow forcing devices to lock to the primary router or any specific node. Will this be possible with ASUS setup? It seems Repeater mode might be best if I don't get roaming tuned right. But if Amish allows fixing select devices to a specific node? It will be an easier setup than figuring out the db and signal power etc that I don't understand yet. Any thoughts and suggestions?

I have successfully set up an AiMesh with 2x RT-ac68U similar to your videos. i am enjoying the speed improvements, however, my device is in close proximity to both the main router and node, and it looks like my wireless connection keeps switching between them. Do you think it is possible to use the roaming assistance setting to prevent switching when signals overlap? i.e. opposite to roaming. Thanks!
Hi John. I'm glad you like your AiMesh system :-) I think the roaming assistance setting can be helpful in your case, you just need to set it with the right number! ( checking the main router's wireless logs and also doing some trial and error can help to find the right number) You can also try relocating the routers a little bit just to make sure they are not overlapping too much! If the primary router is Netgear then you cannot use your Asus routers as AiMesh nodes, because AiMesh is the Asus Mesh System and all the devices have to be Asus to be able to participate. However, you can still use the Asus devices as APs or Repeaters. You may want to watch this video:

As far as converting TM-AC1900 to AC68U there is a guide by "Bay area tech pros" (I'm sure you'll find it if you google it) and they have addressed the issue of the routers being reset to the original firmware. Make sure you also read through the comments to know the most current situation of the guide.
I have a non-ASUS repeater connecting to one of my wireless AIMesh nodes but it drops the connection shortly after. It only works if I have the repeater connecting to the primary router. Is this by design or do I have an issue somewhere?
One thing on my my mind is to see how the TCP session re-converge when roaming between different AiMesh nodes. when doing PING, ICMP does not care any session, it drop or it connect, in the real world, we often use TCP for stateful connections. I have application reconnect when I have roaming issue using AiMesh, e.g. playing game on iPhone, etc.I personally do not know how to do such TCP test to see how roaming acts
I assume this will work if I connect the Asus 1900 ac router AP mode on an edge router 4 and a repeater on upstairs before the connection becomes degraded an set as a repeater and another repeater going towards the basement before the connection drops off.
Lot of us bought two RT-AC68 to setup Aimesh. But almost none are satisfied as there is too much of issues. Mainly the node going offline. Do you think that mesh with both routers set as access points would be better than the traditional method of primary and secondary nodes.
so in both the repeater mode and Aimesh, you cut down your actual speeds in half or is it just in repeater mode?

Thanks for the question. Unfortunately I only have RT-AC68U routers. In my experience if the firmware version of the node is different from the router, it tends to be very unstable! So I always make sure they have the same firmware, also with every firmware update the stability was improved! I haven't experienced any stability issues recently. Thanks!

Thank you for your comment! As far as I know that smart connect is only available in Tri-band Asus routers for example the RT-AC86U that you have and not in the dual-band ones. It is basically a band steering technique for Asus wireless routers. I haven't tried it yet because my routers are all dual-bands, but I have used band steering with other Access Points and overall it is very helpful because it helps the clients to connect to the best available wireless network, however there might be some incompatibility with some older wireless devices which might prevents them from connecting at all. So I would personally enable it and have an eye on my wireless connections for a couple of days and in case I detect and connection issues then I would disable it! Hope this was helpful :-)

By keeping the Smart Connect off, I make sure each device is connected to the fastest band it can utilize and stays there.
I have an AI mesh setup. When moving from one node to the next the call cuts out for about 300ms. It's not a major issue as it returns to normal afterwards. I'm very happy with this, before when I was using repeaters the call would get completely disconnected. The AI mesh is an amazing setup, perfect for large homes.

What's the distance between your primary and node?
I’m having a problem with the WiFi Aimesh network. The setup was seamless but when a node is added in Aimesh mode, it causes my network to crash . It will work for a short time but it consistently crashes. I’ve tried all possible bandwidth frequencies from the main router with no success. I’ve noticed that the Aimesh routers were connected via 5 GHz.

Accidentaly I have bough two DSL-AC86u, instead of RT…sigh…was in a hurry and the price was good
As for today the stock firmware allow for Aimeshing but only wireless as the DSL model lack WAN port...Asus is saying this.
Can DSL-AC86U use a LAN port to be aimesh-ed with ethernet backhaul ? many thanks!

You can check the nodes' connection pattern in the Asus Router mobile app.
Can I connect the node 1 and main router through a network switch?
So if i have a regular ac68u and a T-Mobile verison can i use the tmobile one as a nobe without changing firmware?
No it has to be converted to ac68u first which includes replacing the firmware and changing some other things so it wouldn't go back to the original firmware! I used a guide by "bay area tech pros" (if you google it you'll find it) to convert the router, I would also make sure to read the comments to know about the latest changes and updates and other people's experience. Great video. I'm supposed to be getting 4 Rt-AC68u routers to build an AiMesh system in my home. I'm doing all the connections using powerline adapters. Would you recommend me to do it that way?

Behfor I just setup my AiMesh network in my home and didn't have to use my powerline adapters. My ISP speed is 100mbs up/ 11mbs down. My speed test shows mid 40s for down. I made sure I spread them apart nicely. What else can I do?
I'm gonna test how things go using the router I got from my provider (Huawei) and the Asus Rapture GT-AC2900
as an AP. I'll see which features would still be available while used as an AP. I'm interested in using Asus' Fusion VPN function , but I don't think it'll work as an AP. Might end up getting 2 ASUS routers and using the Huawei as a modem.

Hi Behfor I have the ASUS RT-AC66R. Do your 68s model top plate get as hot as mine. Its been working all this years, but sometimes, rarely, I feel like the wi-fi drops. I just wondering if its related with this high temperature.
Hi, well mine gets hot but not too much! I would check the CPU and RAM status in the System status page, I'm wondering it might be overloaded if it is too hot?! Normally when the wireless drops it could be due to many reasons (overload, firmware issue, interference, wireless client issue, hardware issue etc) so a little bit of troubleshooting can help to pinpoint the problem. For example, is it happening to every wireless device or maybe only one? Also is it tied to 2.4 GHz network, 5 GHz network or maybe both? Does the WiFi really go down or maybe it is up but the devices cannot connect? I would also check the logs when it happens to see if it shows anything weird!
Yeah, I understand there are many possible factors. I even thought in ISP hickup, but it doesn't affect the wired device. I will check in more detail when I see an issue.
I don’t know if you confirm that or no, but I configured my ASUS ac86u as a repeater but I can only connect 5 clients. Once I have 5 clients already connected, the 6th cannot connect, or it connects but doesnt have internet connection. Is that right or is there a problem with my device?
Great video! You just need to learn how to make better graphics, lol. I have an Asus RT-AC1900P and a converted TM-AC1900 converted to a RT-68U. I use the RT-AC1900P as the main as it has the faster CPU and the secondary T-Mobile converted router as the secondary and it works great! If you have a huge home you can buy four of the T-Mobile versions and save yourself a ton of money. Asus makes kick butt products for years now

Hey I have a similar setup like your AP & REPEATER setup, but I'm not using asus and mine is only 2.4Ghz single band. So my problem is when I connect my laptop with ethernet cable to the repeater, It would get full speed like the primary router on speedtest.net, but when I connect wirelessly to the repeater, it'll get 60% speed at the max. If I change my repeater to dual band, and repeating using the 2.4Ghz while my laptop is connected to the 5Ghz, will this solve the problem??

Does using a AI mesh via wireless reduce speed?
hi Behfor, i try to make a wifi LAN using Asus AiMesh (with 3 AC59U v2). Node 1 is connectod to the Primary using 5ghz, node 2 connected to primary using 5ghz. So itry to setup CCTV system using 1 Ezviz NVR connected to node 1 with cable, 2 ezviz cameras connected to node 1 using 2.4ghz. The NVR recognized this 2 cams, no problem, the NVR says online. So i have another 1 Ezviz IP cam connected to the primary node using 2.4ghz, and another 1 ezviz IP cam connected to node 2 using 2.4ghz, but the NVR couldnt recognized them, their status are offline, and the NVR always say "its not on the same network" every time i try to add them manually. While i could ping those 2 cam from my laptop. IP numbers was assigned by the primary node, using DHCP.
whats is the problem here? and how could i solve this problem. TIA.

I'm not sure if there is a hard limit on the number of nodes you can daisy chain, however, you just need to keep in mind that all the traffic from all the daisy chained nodes would eventually have to pass the first backhaul cable! So if there is too much traffic and too many nodes, the backhaul could be a bottleneck! I personally wouldn't connect more than a couple daisy chained nodes, but like I said it will very much depend on the traffic volume! Thanks!

Have you tested a router on aimesh node and a router on repeater mode on the same network?
I don't think so! I might have accidentally done it as I was messing around with AiMesh and Repeater for this video, but not in a way to test that particular scenario.
so what if i have two routers one as primary and one as repeater will it be possible for me to connect to the primary router to the repeater completely wirelessly and have the repeater connect to the primaryvia 2.4ghz and and then broadcast via 5ghz in order to avoid taking a hit to my speeds. im a noob and i apologize if that sounds like a silly idea, im just curious.
Yeah you can do that, but since the 2.4 GHz bandwidth is significantly lower than 5 GHz you might not experience any improvements at all! In my case I was getting the best results when 5 GHz band was used for both inter-router connection and Repeater to client connection! But it doesn't mean everyone should get the best results if they use 5 GHz band! This is something that can be different case by case because of many factors such as environment, interference, obstacles and etc , so I would suggest to try different scenarios and see which one gives you the best results! Anyway my main router is also a modem and at the point where I wanna put my router in repeater mode I'm getting around 50-60 dbm and that's behind two walls btw. My speed isn't great 15 mbps on a good day but for the most part 10 mbps is more common, that's why I really want to eliminate any thing that could significantly affect my speed. I actually had this theory in my head before I watched ur video that maybe if I let the router/repeater communicate on one frequency and broadcast on another frequency that would improve speeds since it's not using the same band for receiving and broadcasting. Glad u proved me right.
@@Behfor also I'm not expecting improvements. there isn't much interference where I live so I think I'll be fine. I just want close to the exact speeds of the primary router on my secondary router in repeater mode. And I'm planning on using a tenda ac6 it's dual band and supports wisp or client+ap mode in the repeater mode and 4 5dbi antennas. I'm planning on connecting repeater mode via the 2.4 ghz band and then turning off 2.4 ghz broadcasting letting only 5ghz. I hope it works out. can i use 1 primary with Mesh and use a old router without mesh as access point/extender or must both be Mesh software?
Yes, you can, because as an AP/repeater you are NOT using the Asus AImesh feature. Only that mode requires ALL the equipment be recent models that can do AImesh. To be clear, DO NOT enable mesh in any of the hardware in your situation.

@@Developer-online ALL hardware must be running AImesh to use AImesh effectively. But you can do the AP or repeater solution with ANY router, if it has an AP mode setting. Most Asus models do. To do this, do not activate AImesh in any of them.

My friend, could you help me? Why have you used 20 parallel streams? Is it necessary to obtain best performance in the test? I have a 2x2 archer t3u adapter and a 3x3 DIR 878 router and i would like to test using the best configuration I can. I am using a gigabit ethernet laptop to max out, just like you.
When the connection is fast it is better to use parallel streams to make sure you are fully saturating the link. In my case I could fully saturate the link when I used 20 streams, and if I used any more it didn't make any difference. You might want to start with one stream and then increase gradually to see if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Yes, you can, however the new AP won't be a part of the AiMesh system and obviously you should manually configure it to have the same SSID name and password ad the rest of them
