- For many Vietnamese refugees who settled in the US after the Vietnam War, the Republican Party has stood for anti-communism and freedom.
Research suggests Vietnamese-Americans are more likely to support Donald Trump than any other Asian-American community.
As part of the BBC's coverage of different communities in the US election, we look at how younger Vietnamese-Americans are seeing things differently - and are attempting to persuade their parents to reconsider.

South-East Louisiana has a relatively large Vietnamese population, and they are Trump supporters. I love the culture, I love the food, and I'm dating the love of my life who is half Vietnamese, but the older Vietnamese population are definitely Republicans.
It’s actually more Democrats than Republicans but not by a lot. For many Vietnamese Democrats Biden isn’t the best choice but better than trump so they don’t really mention politics much. I know so from my parents telling me and their friends.
Hell, I’m from the Bay Areas, my parents are Viet immigrants, and they’re Republicans, though to be fair, they’re more moderate, seems to me they’re more liberal on social issues. My dad did vote in every 21st century election with the exception of 2000 and 2020 Republican though. Gubernatorial elections in Cali are a different story, though.
Trump is against immigrants, how can we differentiate between Asian immigrant and non-immigrant? They vote against their own safety.

I needed this cause me and my siblings grew up knowing what is right from wrong. That there is a major generation gap between our parents that grew up in Vietnam vs the kids that were born here in the states.

I feel like he changed his vote just because he really doesn't care about what his one vote will do in the end. The one thing that will make his daughter happy is voting for Biden so he let her think she convinced him. He doesn't have much reason to stand his ground for Trump. When she showed him a 20 page PowerPoint, he wanted his daughter to feel a sense of accomplishment, and that mattered more than a presidential preference.

The BBC Vietnamese translation of this video, has an aggressive comment section. Whether or not the Chinese government is a hazard to the world, that is something both the Vietnamese youth and elders can agree on. As to how to tackle that issue is another story. Us Vietnamese youth have been heavily influenced by the likes of NBC, CNN, etc. the American celebrities that some tend to follow religiously, and for the Vietnamese elders that only watch Fox and Vietnamese American media, and somehow buy into conspiracy theories like QAnon, Bill Gates starting the Corona virus, and that Trump is the complete answer to China. (All of these claims made by NTD Media, the company behind China Uncensored, and sister channels that support said conspiracy theories.) That speaks volumes for supporters of both presidential candidates. We are surrounded by the people we agree with, from the language divide in our comment sections AND our homes. We are all with our weak points, for the Vietnamese youth it is our exposure to social media and other sources of possible misinformation, for the Vietnamese elders it is their long standing hatred against China and communism. The press of the world has tried, and I dare say have succeeded in taking advantage of those qualities and dividing the community as a whole.
I don't think it is the goal of the press to divide the world. Trump is the liar and manipulator and unreliable news sources like Fox are responsible for feeding into Trump and spreading misinformation. Reputable major media outlets like AP and BBC are there to report the reality, not divide the world.
FOX News & similar conservative companies are feeding the Republican voting base with gullible/naive elder Vietnamese through conspiracy theories & propaganda. I'm a Vietnamese and I have also noticed that my parents fall within that group of elders in our Vietnamese community. They have the belief that Trump is fighting for democratic freedom-loving Vietnamese and that Biden would sell out America to communist China. The youtube channels that are spewing their propaganda mixes some truths with a whole lot of false claims and misinformation that the older generation of Vietnamese are believing in.

He absolutely NEEDS to apologize, moving forward. Otherwise, that demographic will continue to undermine his efforts and will only help conservative Republicans. Im American-Vietnamese. Yes, I'm not Vietnamese-American because i live in America not Vietnam. This is my home and this is where my loyalty belongs to. U.S.A. is before Vietnam if i want to call this my home and it would be vice versa if i was in Vietnam. Vietnamese fled on boats to escape and now these ignorant young American-Vietnamese are rooting for the same ideology that forced their parents or grandparents to flee from their homeland. Even though we Vietnamese people are uncommonly rare to everybody, I can't believe the voters who supports Trump are like bloodsuckers to him. Not everybody votes for Trump. The reason why so many Vietnamese are conservative is because of anti-communism. Many people call Vietnamese "racist" and "stupid" for making this move as immigrants, but that was because the red scare is among us, and it will always be with us. The Vietnamese community fled Vietnam to escape prosecution by it's communist government. Many people did not survive the trip, but regardless, the people started a new life in America, land of the free. These people mostly valued hard work for success and people like Trump came to their interest. He promised to be hard on communism, and add more jobs to the market. In fact, most this was true, thus causing the Vietnamese community(mostly older ones) to vote for him again. The reason why kids push so far left combine with social media indoctrination and school indoctrination. Hell, this is California, one of the most liberal states in the country. Most schools don't even recognize Lunar New Year as a real holiday even having 80 percent Asian students. In addition to this, kids never experienced the torture it was to live in the Vietnam War and the reason why communism sucks.

The vast majority of of Vietnamese Americans who were born and grew up in VN are very strong anti-China and anti-communist, and consequently supported Trump for his toughness on China and the GOP’s traditional anti-communist stand. However, many older Vietnamese Americans depend on public subsidies for their day-to-day needs that are generously provided by the Dems, not by Trump/GOP. The younger generation is so misguided I grew up in a nexus of former Communist powers, my grandmother worked in China my mother lived in Kazakhstan my friends, teachers and students were the victims of the Hmong genocide in Laos, the Vietnamese re-education camps, the Cuban revolution.
I saw the survivors, the people who were lucky.
People who were starving, desperate and alone some are missing fingers or limbs, some were tortured to the point that they can’t speak, many will never know what happened to their spouses, friends or children.
You can compare the effects of one policy over another forever and no one should suggest that one side has everything right, but it should never escape our minds the horrors of what happens when governments have too much control.
There was no evidence of re education camps after the reunificación of vietnan.
I understand the sentiment as my mother immigrated to this country from the Philippines and is a fervent Trump supporter. Unfortunately, she doesn’t understand that if she tried to immigrate to this country under this current administration she wouldn’t get in. Also my father who enlisted with the US Army when the Japanese invaded the Philippines to help liberate his homeland probably wouldn’t have earned his US citizenship as evidenced by the Dreamer ex-veterans kicked out of this country.

It was really hard for me in 2020 concerning this issue because I also wanted to convince my parents to unlearn their harmful ideologies but I also was fighting against being the scapegoat at the same time. I was pointing out not only flaws about our western society, I was also providing reasons as to why I should be listened to which was SOOOOO HARRRRRRD because for 18 years before that I was never heard at all. Literally nobody was on my side, not even the kids slightly older than me. Can’t say I was any more successful but I am currently a philosophy major and after a few classes, books, etc. I’m hoping I can finally educate them enough to at least not exert micro-aggressions towards certain communities of people. I think it would turn out well because even though I was unsuccessful with changing their politics I was successful in building a better relationship with my parents and so they are not that abusive anymore. And my brother won’t come in and argue on their behalf because he’s been grey rocked for 3 years now! With patience and enough experience in debating coupled with empathy and understanding I think I will be able.

Would have been interesting if the BBC looked at how many of these Trump supporters were business owners and if they were financially more secure because of the Trump administrations policies? People like to give an honorable moral reason why they vote a certain way but at the end of the day... money and protecting what we have can lead us down truly dark paths.

While I’m glad BBC has shed light on this issue for Vietnamese Americans such as myself going through this, it does a horrible job explaining the details.
*WHY?* Why are the Vietnamese Americans so divided? Most refugees and first generation Vietnamese Americans were typically liberal leaning, democratic voters prior to Trump’s election. They wanted an honest chance at the American Dream like all immigrants while living a quiet and tranquil life. However, coming from a war torn country that was consumed by communism, and barely escaping it, these people will do anything to stay away from risking a repeat of what had occurred.
*HOW* How is it that Vietnamese Americans went from voting blue to red? Since majority of Vietnamese American Trump supporters are older, they don’t look into scientific-based research papers or check their sources. The things they hear and see are heavily biased and often times fake news that essentially serve as propaganda. For example, my parents and their fellow Vietnamese Americans, have recently started watching Vietnamese “news” on UA-cam. The channel has brainwashed our parents into thinking Trump will somehow save us all from China. I have yet to see any actual sources on this.
*WHO?* People like Cookie Duong and I are the generation who are trying to prove to our parents that the propaganda is false. I have used her website _The Interpreter_ as a way to educate my parents but they remain stubborn and think the articles itself are propaganda ... a major backfiring for my case ... however, I’m grateful to Cookie for putting herself out there to help our other Vietnamese American peers ... we can only hope that our parents will eventually come to their senses as the Vietnamese American community is looking a little embarrassing for the rest of the Asian Americans.
Little advice if you don't mind, Sabrina. My girlfriend...might be my ex at this point... of almost 4 years is a huge trump supporter. I had stated my feelings about the man from the beginning, but it has only been this year that the discourse between us got too much for me to want to continue with so I attempted to stop all talk about politics. She came to this country in 2015 and was granted citizenship last year. She is on the younger side and from just outside of Hanoi. So not middle age and not from the south. She gets all of her news from FB and from some newsfeed out of Cali. She is brain washed. I know you're Vietnamese American but you're familiar with the culture so any direction as to where i can maybe??? get her to at least see things from a different perspective without claiming that it's all fake? I have tried and failed miserably.

But if she’s younger, hopefully she’ll be more understanding. Try the website mentioned in the video, the-interpreter.net I believe. Explain that the website is fact based and it is translated from English articles compared to the fake news she might be reading that are not research based. Also, if you google “cookie duong tiktok”, her page has a PowerPoint that she used to convince her parents to vote for Biden. Hopefully that helps!

She believes the fat man is still going to prevail one way or another. It's surreal listening to someone talk about things you know are patently false as it almost challenges your own perception of reality. I can deal with and understand different pov's. All fine and good. But conspiracy theories from the basement of Q. Nope. Just can't.
I should have started working on this a couple of years ago while the roots were still tender. And maybe if the pos ends up with multiple charges maybe a light will go on for her, but i doubt it. Trump is a capitalist. Anyway, just because Trump has been voted via democracy, doesn't make him someone who's democratic, as we can see from his recent actions..
