It’s good that the US and Vietnam has better relationship. As a Vietnamese, we have a saying: forgive but not forget. We look toward a better future but the efforts, deaths, bloods of previous generations cant be forgotten and must be honored. I think it should be the same for American veterans who joined the war. They fought for what they thought were right, and the government told them. They fought for their country. Regardless the sides, we should honor and respect those joined the Vietnam war.
Easy to say than done, and yes I do agreed with you. But the question is, will the white people in general think the same way? I mostly doubt it. White people love killing and wars from generations to generations they will never change and that’s the fact!

As an American I am deeply sorry for the unnecessary War in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh and the Vietnamese people could have been great allies to America. All we would have had to do was tell the French to get out of Vietnam.

I Joined the US Army in 1975 at the age of seventeen. I served my country faithfully for 22 Years and retired in 1997. I have had family members and friends that were wounded and killed in the war.... I served for many years with veterans of that conflict, who hold no ill will towards the people of Vietnam. Where have you served? how many countries and cultures have you been on the ground with? Don't let your your alligator mouth override your crocodile ass!

People are super negative these days, but by and large, the US usually is better at making friends than enemies. Even Russia was becoming a friend after the cold war until a number of unfortunate events began to unfold. Heck, if Kim Jon Il and his successors left power, or there is another revolution in Iran, we would probably become friends with them as well.

My family fought against the Americans for the NVA. I lost my grandparents during Operation Linebacker in Haiphong. I lost uncles during the Tet Offensive. My parents still migrated to the US in the 80s. After visiting the motherland and living there for 3 years, I can safely say that the general public holds almost little to no resentment to the US for the war. Vietnam has a strong growth mindset that has propelled to the status they have now. I just wish Americans shared the same sentiment.

My father fought against the Vietnamese in the war. To this day I cannot understand why. I believe in the general idea that we were against communism. Growing up however what I have seen in the US is alot of hubris that ultimately lead of a great misunderstanding and underestimation of the Vietnamese people. Living here in Houston I am throughly impressed by the hard work, teamwork, and kindness of these people. Instead of bickering along party lines, they decided to move forward as one people. I think the lesson I learned after I read about history and the more recent Chinese war with them is that they just want to be left alone so they can live productive peaceful lives. I choose not to dishonor our US veterans simply because they did mainly what was asked of their goverment, but I think we as Americans made a big mistake in having a war with the Vietnamese. I'm glad we're trying to work things out with them and I would love to visit Vietnam in peace someday.
Your father didn't fought against the Vietnamese, they fought against the Viet Congs. Remember that in the Vietnam War, it's North Vietnam vs. South Vietnam (that's why it's called the Vietnam War, it's not us vs. them, it's they vs. themselves, we're just the allies of one of them) and your father and the USA were allies to South Vietnam which fought against the Viet Congs who had communist control of North Vietnam.

Americans are still angry at North Korea because they didn't let Americans take over their entire country. The war in Viet Nam forced Washington to remove the military draft, because the war created a new political term for Americans, war for profit.
My cousin is Vietnamese and he was part of a large baby “drop” after the war. He is over 50 and an executive on Wall Street. He is one of the best things that happened to our family. He brought us all closer together. 🤗😘🫶🏼🙏🏻

I have family in Vietnam and its basically impossible for them to come visit us in America not because of cost but because the visa process is very strict just for visitors. I hope soon if relations between the US and Vietnam gets better that they can have the opportunity to be able to visit.

The lesson of the Vietnam War for Americans like me, is that we shouldn't let fear control our actions. We invaded Vietnam out of the fear of what communism could do. We had more in common with the Vietnamese people than we knew. Our war was for nothing.

My Vietnamese friends told me that they forgive but don't forget, they'll try to be a good friend but they'll also watch their back around the US. I didn't know how to feel about that, but I would probably hurt a lot of a friend of mine said that to me.

Decades back, in late 1972, South Vietnam and the United States were winning the Vietnam War decisively by every conceivable measure. That's not just my view. That was the view of our enemy, the North Vietnamese government officials. Victory was apparent when President Nixon ordered the U.S. Air Force to bomb industrial and military targets in Hanoi, North Viet Nam's capital city, and in Haiphong, its major port city, and we would stop the bombing if the North Vietnamese would attend the Paris Peace Talks that they had left earlier. The North Vietnamese did go back to the Paris Peace talks, and we did stop the bombing as promised.
On January the 23rd, 1973, President Nixon gave a speech to the nation on primetime television announcing that the Paris Peace Accords had been initialed by the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, the Viet Cong, and the Accords would be signed on the 27th. What the United States and South Vietnam received in those accords was victory. At the White House, it was called "VV Day," "Victory in Vietnam Day."
The U.S. backed up that victory with a simple pledge within the Paris Peace Accords saying: should the South require any military hardware to defend itself against any North Vietnam aggression we would provide replacement aid to the South on a piece-by-piece, one-to-one replacement, meaning a bullet for a bullet; a helicopter for a helicopter, for all things lost -- replacement. The advance of communist tyranny had been halted by those accords.
Then it all came apart. And It happened this way: In August of the following year, 1974, President Nixon resigned his office as a result of what became known as "Watergate." Three months after his resignation came the November congressional elections and within them the DEMOCRATS won a landslide victory for the new Congress and many of the members used their new majority to de-fund the military aid the U.S. had promised, piece for piece, breaking the commitment that we made to the South Vietnamese in Paris to provide whatever military hardware the South Vietnamese needed in case of aggression from the North. Put simply and accurately, a majority of Democrats of the 94th Congress did not keep the word of the United States.
On April the 10th of 1975, President Gerald Ford appealed directly to those DEMOCRAT members of the congress in an evening Joint Session, televised to the nation. In that speech he literally begged the Congress to keep the word of the United States. But as President Ford delivered his speech, many of the members of the Congress walked out of the chamber. Many of them had an investment in America's failure in Vietnam. They had participated in demonstrations against the war for many years. They wouldn't give the aid.

DEMOCRAT JOE BIDEN, former presidential “peace candidate” George McGovern, and New York Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman. National Public Radio host Debbie Elliott retraced Brown’s refusal to accept any refugees in a January 2007 interview with Taft. According to a transcript, which was aired on its flagship program, “All Things Considered,” Taft said, “our biggest problem came from California due to Brown.” She called his rejection of Vietnamese refugees “a moral blow.”
Taft recalled another reason liberals opposed the refugees: “They said they had too many Hispanics, too many people on welfare, they didn’t want these people.” Then-Sen. JOE BIDEN tried to slow down the refugee bill in the Senate, complaining that he needed more details about the quickly unfolding refugee problem before he would support it. He said the White House “had not informed Congress adequately about the number of refugees,” according to the Library of Congress history of the legislation.
As an American we were in the wrong when we invaded Vietnam its truly a wonderful country.

As an American, whether you’re left or right, this is absolutely a net positive
Vietnam has 4 levels or tiers of cooperation with countries abroad. The number 1 tier is that of special recognition, and applies to Cuba and Laos. The US has been elevated to the second tier, which Russia and China also hold.
The fact their highest international partnership is with Cuba illustrates why the US wanted to fight for Vietnam… doesn’t excuse the failures of those wars but highlights the reason it made sense to do something.
During the CIA’s covert war in Laos, the US dropped over 2 million tons of munitions, making Laos the most bombed country in the world. The bombing campaign ran from 1964-1973 and equates to a plane load of bombs every 8 minutes, 24 hours per day, for 9 years…..The CIA overthrew the S Vietnamese government on Nov 2, 1963.

Wow, such an amazing segment. To truly have all that perspective after all that endured suffering is truly remarkable. Contrast that with elsewhere in the world. Truly remarkable and truly inspiring. No wonder the veterans ended up respecting that country.
My grandfather died in the Tay Ninh battlefield (near Saigon) in 1972 serving in the North Vietnamese army. To this day, his body has not been found. This is the biggest pain for our family. .Currently, my grandmother has passed away. The house only has certificates of merit from the Provisional Government of the Republic of South Vietnam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam awarded to him for his resistance against the Americans to liberate the South. , unifying the Fatherland. For our young generation born after the war, we have heard bad things about the United States 20 years ago but now things are much better. In our eyes, United States and Vietnam are currently countries with good relations, comprehensive cooperation in the fields of economics, politics and society. I also like the United States very much and hope to visit one day. This beautiful country. Closing the past and looking forward to the future.
In the Army when I was stationed in Camp Kasey South Korea, we had a beautiful Vietnamese soldier in our company, she was so gorgeous and extremely smart and classy but she was taken by a good man from a previous unit and was rock solid devoted to him but man I'll never forget her. I'd love to go to Vietnam and try my luck there one day now that I'm a civilian again.

My former father-in-law fought for the NVA before being captured by the Americans. My dad was stationed near Long Binh during the war. Father in law now living in US near his granddaughter (my daughter). Being married to a North Vietnamese helped to expand my perspective on that war. My point? Idk. Figured I'd just share this.
This underscores a problem facing the anti-Western powers. The population of a modern state tends to chafe under a totalitarian regime. As these countries attain first world quality of life, individuals generally want to control their own possibilities.
As a Vietnamese, I can say 100% all Vietnamese people don't hold a grudge against American. We all know US is the land of many opportunities and lawful. Whereas in Vietnam, you have to buy your way into a good job. E.g you have to pay someone inside 20K usd to work as a Customs and Border officer. And when driving, you don't know when you are going to get pull over for a bs violation. You have to pay the traffic officer on the spot for them to let you go. They don't know it, but corruption is what bring the country down.

If I was Joe Biden, I probably wouldn’t apologize either the reason I say that is because even if you say that we are sorry for what pain and heartbreak we have caused you that doesn’t mean anything really the damage is already done. You can’t say sorry as if you can take it back. You can make it right without saying sorry I have caused you so much pain America’s cost you so much pain.

Good relationships are priceless in building a better future
It’s good that the US and Vietnam has better relationship. As a Vietnamese, we have a saying: forgive but not forget. We look toward a better future but the efforts, deaths, bloods of previous generations cant be forgotten and must be honored. I think it should be the same for American veterans who joined the war. They fought for what they thought were right, and the government told them. They fought for their country. Regardless the sides, we should honor and respect those joined the Vietnam war. Thanks DUC DUNI for your post. You are so very intelligent and move forward looking at the good future for Vietnam.

This is wonderful, this is how humanity moves forward. Yes, bad things happed in the past. Many people lost their lives on both sides. It's okay to acknowledge it and remember it but the only way to make progress is to move forward. The U.S. and Japan did it and together helped build each other up through peace. Countries like North Korea, China, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, are stuck in the past and only deal in division and destruction. At some point the older communist generation will wither away and the younger with kinder eyes will take over. This is by far the best thing Biden has done.
US-Vietnam will always be the example that we should point to whenever someone says there's no peaceful solution. There always is, you just need to have the determination to pursue it, using force is the easy and lazy way that never works.
Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and now Palestine seem to disagree with your rosy view of America.

Happy to see this, I was actually in Ha Noi when Biden landed. It was a beautiful country to visit and the people were very welcoming and hospitable. Can't wait to go back, it felt like a 2nd home to me.

At the end of the day though, it was Ho who became Commie China's puppet and sold Vietnam to Commie China by taking Commie China's blood flag (current red flag with central yellow star) from Fújiàn province to his Pac Bo cave in 1941 and eventually replace the national flag of Vietnam of 4000 years (yellow flag with 3 horizontal red stripes) with it, while his traitorous minion Pham Van Dong played his part in selling Vietnam's islands and maritime areas to Commie China in his 1958 covenant to Zou Enlai. Vietnam will mostly be taking the manufacturing jobs from China. The US has been a service economy for decades now, other than things built for the US government. AI and automation will more likely replace the jobs within the US.

It's always about cheap labor and relaxed work rules. I'm not blaming foreign countries, I'm blaming politicians and greedy corporations that want to sell it back home in America. If we aren't worthy of a living wage then keep your products.
Or many the rust belt states need to diversify and come up with other ideas then the steel industry that has withered that part of the country.

My grandfather came home after the war and lost most of his memories. Couldn't remember his own children's' name.
His younger brother sadly couldn't make it home. 8 years ago, our family found his body parts along side a river, ~1000 km away from home.
Another brother of him who fought and bravely scarified his life to protect the very same hill that every person in my hometown climes it everyday for exercise. I live on the street that was named after him.
It's unfortunate that both side has lost so much due to this nonsense war, and I do hope that we at least learn a thing or two from it.

According to a friend of mine who lived in Hanoi during the time the United States dropped bombs on Hanoi, these were the places where anti-aircraft missiles were placed to shoot down American planes, so American pilot looked out for them, see and return fire at ground targets .

The US was not at war with the country of Vietnam. The south Vietnam and their allies were fighting against the communist North Vietnamese and their allies. North Vietnam’s communist allies turned on them almost, as soon as, the US forces left.

Communism helped us Vietnamese escape from the French colony and rule for decades. The battle of Dien Bien Phu in the air forced the French to retreat back to the country... America must be called the next development. According to France, America jumped in to invade and control South Vietnam, along with Vietnamese henchmen in the South established by France, wanting to turn our country of Vietnam into two parts, two different regimes.
The US were not trying to colonize Vietnam. That was likely propaganda. The US tried to get the world to abandon colonialism after WW2, but France was one of the countries that refused for some time.
