    Admitting that you're wrong and that something you've put a great deal of your time and energy into has been damaging to you is a hard thing to do. This is why you shouldn't treat politics like it's sports and politicians as sports teams.

    • @irisbjones
      @irisbjones Рік тому +94

      Exactly. Our politics have become about teams which leaves zero room for the actual work of the people to continue working together for democracy for all. How many times did people label others in this short film? When you label, you forget your commonness as humans.

      That's actually a great point, I've never thought about how people see it like a sports team thing. I think having team colors and groups can make people more rigid and less likely to research people (outside of whether they're democrat or republican) and vote for people outside of their team. When I had to vote for governor, I read each and every candidate's statements. I highlighted parts, kept notes, and didn't pay too much attention to what "side" they were on.

    Dear foreigners,
    Let me explain something about American politics.
    Whenever you get a "first Black [X]" elected to a given office, the next person to hold that office is usually the white candidate who is perceived to be the most racist.
    Thus, the 2016 Republican presidential primary was a competition to see who could be the most racist, with the winner very likely to also win the general election, because racists who normally don't vote come out to the voting booth in great numbers on election day in this circumstance.
    What shocks me about the 2016 Republican presidential primary is that none of the other Republican candidates seemed to understand that they were in a competition to see who could be the most racist. This is surprising because Republicans are usually very sophisticated about using racism to get elected. Either Trump was the only candidate who understood what was needed to get elected, or he really is more racist than the other Republican candidates and didn't bother pretending otherwise.
    Anyway, those who voted for Trump will always see him as the "great savior" who rescued America from the "shame" of having a non-white president. Trump voters will remain loyal to him until they can no longer vote for him, and they will always see the Democratic party as the source of their humiliation because Obama ran as a Democrat.
    We Americans are really bad about saying this stuff out loud because, well, most of us are more racist than we realize. Denial tends to obfuscate things.
